  • I've noticed recently that a lot of people are moving away from Iceland. I've had conversations with some who have left, are leaving, or are thinking about it to find out why.

Very interesting topic, Lauren, thank you for sharing! This makes me sad, sort of. I wonder where those people move to. Often you have to overcome visa restrictions and finding a job abroad isn't easy either. I was harbouring the hope to one day move to Iceland or another Scandinavian country and try my luck. What are people from Grindavik doing? Their plight must have an impact on the housing market.

The foreigners that I know who have moved have all gone back to their home countries. The Icelanders who are considering moving soon are mostly looking at countries within te EU (particularly Denmark and Spain), but I've even heard someone suggest Japan recently!
Luckily visa restrictions aren't really an issue within the EU/EEA, but yes jobs might be a problem.
I'm actually not too sure about the housing situation of the Grindavík residents yet, I know many people offered their homes and summer houses for them to live in but I will find out more and make an update video soon

Almost 15 % of Icelanders live abroad. The number will continue to rise but this ain't new - this has been an ongoing situation for DECADES!!!! It's just easier nowadays to go abroad so people do more of that. The real estate prices in Iceland are just ridiculous. My sister bought her apartment in 2003 for 10 million. Today the apartment is worth 50 million. in 20 years, it's 5 times more expensive.

Your monthly income in salaries in Iceland is much higher than in UK. Also you don't talk about the low price of heating coast and electric
How big part is that of your salaries? Is it included in the rent here in Iceland? When you talk about renting price in UK is there all heat, electric and water included in the renting price in UK ?

These are all very good points 😊 Like I said in the video these are just points that have been brought up when I've had conversations with other people who are leaving Iceland, not necessarily to the UK. The heating and electric in the UK has all risen drastically since I left so I'm not able to compare, but energy was always much cheaper here in Iceland anyway. When I was still renting in Iceland some places had bills included and some didn't, same as in the UK.

Usually nothing else is included in the rent in UK.
