I hope Frontiers will be the start of a new era for Sonic. I also hope this means that Sonic Team will start allowing Sonic to be serious again. I have this small feeling the Frontiers will be the framework for Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 remakes. Once Sonic Team gets enough confidence to go back to that era maybe we'll get a Sonic Adventure 3. I think it's because 06 was rushed and people didn't like it that Sonic Team lost so much confidence. Now I think they're regaining it.

What really hurts me about the cutscene where Sage sacrifices herself is that the OST piece for it is named "Unheard", implying that Sonic never heard Sage's final plea, and only the player was able to hear. WE are the ones meant to look after her father, not Sonic.

    • @DJKisikil
      @DJKisikil Před rokem +47

      Also here's a crack theory I had:
Considering how Sonic called The End "he", I theorized that Sonic saw Mephiles, the only one to canonically (although that's dubious at best) kill Sonic in the series. Though, considering how 06 retconned itself out of existence, it's a crack theory at best, and flat-out wrong at worst.

Yeah I thought it was actually kind of heartbreaking. He did miss most of the war, and no one told him what had happened to Tails ( probably because they thought Tails would tell him, and he didn't ). He probably assumed Tails was still going strong and doing his best out there while he was captured. The fact that Sonic didn't think Tails wouldn't be too badly affected by him being presumed dead for 6 months really speaks to his trust in his lil bro's independence ( when meanwhile Tails felt the opposite ). Which in turn makes Sonic encouraging him to do his own thing more believable, he always thought he was well capable of doing well on his own. At least that's how I see it !

Nezumi, I hope you see this: you said in the video you're unsure "THE END" represents death in Sonic's universe literally. The thing is, it actually DOES! Kishimoto (the game's director) said in a CZcams livestream the other day that THE END is seen differently by each person who perceives it, and that to them, it appears as what they conceive death as. We see it as the moon, because the moon is a common representation of death in fiction. Sonic and Sage see something entirely different, as did the Ancients.

I think one of my favorite little details about this game is that when you think about it the name "Frontiers" isn't just a reference to how you spend tbe game exploring a big, open-zone lost land, but is also a nod to the character growth everyone experiences as everyone decides to explore new frontiers and come into their own

  • @ScapeVEVO
    @ScapeVEVO Před rokem +136

I think Vandalize- while not made for the game- was chosen due to how it can represent Eggman's new feelings as a father towards Sage. She quite literally vandalized his cold heart, made him feel something, just to die at the end, and leave him all alone. But of course she has seemingly been scraped back together, her dad *is* a genius after all.

    • @chase2020

I thought that Vandalize could also be about how Sonic impacted Sage. She said in one of the cutscenes that she wished she had never seen the complexities of his relationships, because it showed her what love was capable of. @54:00 about the ancients and how they connect to the Gizoids/Chaos/Chao
That's honestly precisely how I think all this is connected as well (though I am sad Emerl's original origins with the Nocturnus Clan and all were dropped). I've seen some people say there is an inconsistency here with Eggman saying the ancients died out within a generation, yet they are supposed to be ancestors of Chaos, but if the theory that the ancients evolved into the Chao is correct, then both can still work: The ancients like they are seen and how they lived in Frontiers may have died out completely, but their hypothetical (d)evolved forms (the Chao) live on.
Something else I'd like to mention is that strictly speaking, the Chaos Emeralds' origins are still unknown. The ancients used them centuries ago and were the ones to bring them to Earth at one point, but there isn't really any explanation how they got them, is there? For all we know, they could've still originated from Earth or are being brought back to Earth repeatedly, meaning the Gaia circle could work with the power of the Chaos Emerals/temples regardless. Iirc in Sonic X, the Chaos Emeralds scatter across space at one point, once Sonic & co return to their planet. And although Sonic X isn't part of the games' continuity of course, it shows that it could be possible something similar happened in the mainline continuity

For what it's worth, Sage does say that the Emeralds were "native to their planet" in one of the side story scenes on Ouranos, so I think that's fairly telling at least. Though the wording does leave it ambiguous enough to wonder about, even so.

      @SolarSonic21 Před rokem +4

@@NezumiVA One thing I would like to add to the argument that the Ancients did not create the Chaos Emeralds. On Ares Island towards the end of Knuckles side quests; Sonic and Knuckles sit on top of a man-made shrine and the remains of a broken black gem in the center. Thanks to a piece of unused dialogue, we find out that the Ancients made attempts to recreate the Master Emerald. Whether it was to work as a spare or something the Ancients can use to control the Emeralds without the Master Emerald. Regardless of what they intended, the results ended in failure. If the Ancients truly created the Chaos Emeralds, they would've had a much better understanding of them and recreating the Master Emerald should've been a simple task for them.
I believe the Master Emerald was built first and the Chaos Emeralds second or vice versa, either way, they were meant to be together. At some point, even before the Ancients creation, the Chaos Emeralds ended up on the Ancient's home world. With them spending years studying them but never truly understanding them. This would also imply that the Ancients should've known about the 'miracles' the Emeralds create with all seven gathered. So why did they only rely on four Chaos-fueled titans each with one Emerald instead of four Super formed titans?

The journey to Frontiers was one of confusion, drama, excitement and worry. From the extremely ambiguous marketing to the sudden surge of hype for it, I was extremely wary when booting it up. There was a lot riding on this - the pressure was real. But the second I beat Giganto I thought to myself... I am having the best time I've had with a Sonic game since *Generations*.
From the genuinely emotional story (seriously made my jaw drop when I saw the first flashback of the ancients with Amy and IMMEDIATELY recognized the Chaos anatomy they had going on) to the frankly super fun gameplay loop, it was a blast from start to end, even if it kinda ran out of gas come endgame. I actually... kinda liked The End though - While it's a shame we lost the potentially hilarious and raw image of Super Sonic fist-fighting a planet, I felt sufficiently threatened, much more than the other titans. And Sage's sacrifice and ending made me genuinely cry, something I never thought would be possible from playing a Sonic game.

Also, since the Ancients seemed to land at the same time as the rumors of the Gaia Temples, it is possible that the temples were created by Ancients for Light Gaia. Chip probably just sent them all to different places on Earth to help the efficiency of fixing the planet.
Along with something interesting. If you remember, the 6th Gaia Temple we go to in Sonic Unleashed, seemed to contain the answers to who Chip is. Containing his memories like Cyberspace. The Player hears the End with a Female voice, while Sonic refers to the end as a He, and Sage Refers to the end as an It.. The Ends form reflects the way the individual perceive death.. ((with the moon being a Symbol of death in alot of cultures)) [Kishimoto Behind the Scenes is my source for this]

Something I think we need to remember is that yes in this modern day video games can be seen as art, but so are movies and music and just because big critics hate a game or people want to hate on it for the sake of it what matters is your personal opinion. What you think and whether or not you had fun. I personally value story first in the game but my second value is fun and I felt very content with this game. I know it wasn't perfect but perfect doesn't always mean a game is fun.

Eggman’s relationship with Sage being melancholy and poignant was surprising yet beautiful all the same Mike Pollock really shined here. I like how Frontiers is the first game where me (an unrepentant liker of Generations and Forces as the games where Sonic feels THE best to play) and my friends (likers of the Adventure era who hated those games with a passion) are coming together again. I still think the boost format hasn't seen its peak, but a lot of the flowing platforming of Frontiers gave me some of that vibe of playing the world's fastest rhythm platforming game, and I can appreciate a game that both feels good and has, like... plot content. (As much as I like Generations and Forces, they have premises, not plots). The future does look bright, I think Sonic Team is finding their footing again in a really impressive way. As long as they're not forced to endlessly course-correct, I think they'll be fine. Frontiers certainly shows signs of being allowed to do that already -- many of the most fun platforming sections most strongly resemble the most fun stages from Forces :D

Bringing back momentum physics, getting rid of the double jump and bring back the Air Dash, no pointless 2D sections or recycled stages, make combat less janky, or get a better writer than Ian Flynn.

OKAY, THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL VIDEO. This is the first essay about Frontiers I've watched that delves into the story and themes THIS much and it was an absolutely wonderful listen. When you started absolutely geeking out about the lore implications with the ancients, the emeralds, chaos... it was so good. AND THEN WHEN YOU ANALISED THE END'S THEMATIC TIES TO EVERYTHING IN AND OUTSIDE OF SONICS UNIVERSE AAHHHHH, it was so so good!!!
Before seeing anyone's opinion on the matter I too felt like this was a game that in many ways was both an end and a new beggining. You can feel that this game has a different direction than the previous few games where theyre allowing themselves to be more confident with their ideas and thats just wonderful. Also I feel liek the constant references throughout the course of this game also set up sonic team's new approach of not letting a single piece of lore that hasn't been written out be left unaknowledged. This game also decided to elaborate on things set up by adventure, much like SA2 did with its predecessor, or adventure itself with sonic 3 & knuckles. This kind of building off of what has been already established hasn't been seen in a good while and it's really cool to see. Another thing that gets me excited is that we are seeing a lot about sonic team being more transparent (with for instance the admittance that the latter half of the game had to be rushed, said very close to the games release) and listening more to common criticism, cant bring up specific instances of this but ive seen that around twitter a few times, which is awesome. Again, Frontiers feels like such a good setup for whats about to come while at the same time being a really good game all on its own. Just. Cngrats sonic team for this W
And bravo for the video, again, really enjoyable watch :)

I was mostly fine with the cyberspace themes. Sky Sanctuary makes sense cause the prologue, Green Hill because it's Sonic, but Chemical Plant... That's not Eggman's only facility, it's never even been a primary base and I'm tired of it.
It might just be my preference in game difficulty, but I'm glad the easy things you criticized were easy. I do wish the Supreme was more difficult though. It has a gun, but only used it once! And Giganto had legs and might as well be a floating torso with arms. I wish it had a kick attack or two.
When I played Kirby Forgotten Land, the fishing minigame was really stressful. I didn't expect Sonic to do a fishing minigame better than Kirby of all things.
Rhea Island was so tense I tried to boost as little as possible to emphasize Sonic's fatigue. I'm the kind of girl that hyperfixates what visually distinct equipment is canonically used and when in video games. I do wish Rhea Island had it's own theme. The first area is covered in trees, so it'd be thematically appropriate for the whole island to be a dead forest in winter. Maybe the towers were originally built for weather control or something.
As for the True Final Boss, my inner Kirby fan was just floored. It felt like Star Dream but actually unfathomable. Bravo.
One complaint that just won't leave me alone is one line of dialogue in Chaos Island that felt very ableist to me. Needing help is part of being alive, not growing up. Though I am glad they chose to own Tails' previous characterization rather than pretending it never existed.
Part of me wishes Amy, Tails, and Knuckles fought their respective titans instead of Sonic and that the titans and End had more greek names. Maybe the End could've been named Telos(greek for end) or Typhon or something.
I'm fascinated that the Chaos Emeralds are from another planet while the Master Emerald is native to Earth, makes me wonder what that means for the wider universe. We know where they came from, but not the why. I really liked that mysterious vibe.
(And I also think the Black Arms are descendants of the Ancients left behind on the north and south poles of their planet, like the Mondasian Cybermen, but that's just me)
I'm stupid excited for the Wave 3 DLC next year!
Edit: Oh! Also Ares Island has a phosphoresent underground river, which I LOVE!

@@anonymouslucario285 No, but I'm not a fan of it. The other two have reasons. Green Hill is an iconic location in Sonic, Sky Sanctuary is the most definitive part of Angel Island that isn't underground, but Chemical Plant is just another zone. A fun zone, yeah, but aesthetically I mean.
In Frontiers, I like to think each Cyberspace Zone represents an aspect of Sonic's world.
Green Hill represents the myriad islands and archipelagos Sonic's kind tend to live on.
Sky Sanctuary represents Angel Island, which is very story relevant.
The City could be analogous to human civilization on the continents.
What does Chemical Plant provide? What's so special about this specific factory's aesthetic?

I didn't realize this, but at 1:03:30 The End says "No matter what form I take". With an behind the scenes interview with kishimoto, he said that The End was the symbol of Death, that what the player sees isn't was sonic and sage sees. It also is basically confirmed that The End is gender neutral with sonic calling The End a he, sage calling them an it, and the player hearing a females voice. But if you listen closely, you can hear another voice coming through while they speak, possibly a man's voice, meaning that the player is able to somewhat hear what sonic is hearing from The End, but not fully. It also makes The End more chilling when you take the line "I am infinite, I am nothing". It basically implies that it is immortal and that it can go anywhere it wants to go. So even though The End is defeated, those lines implies that it's only temporarily defeated.

    • @DLxxx

The End also said Sonic didn't stand a chance against it, but got defeated anyway (about as easily as most of the enemies Super Sonic has beaten in the past). I don't see much reason to take what the End says as absolute when it was already proven wrong and fallible. I mean.. It was also confused and caught off guard by the strength of Sonic's unbreakable will.

@@DLxxx I think at that point sonic knows he's not going to completely defeat them, but he doesn't care. He wants to send the message that he'll fight The End as long as he's there, even if he needs help doing so. I also think The End was just mad that sonic and sage (but mainly sonic)won't just give up, since the only other time he face something immortal and just as strong was Dark Gia (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). They believe that there's no hope for him since no matter what he does, no matter how many times he defeats them, The End will consume their world.

I feel like there's just a tiny bit more to be said about the EVA similarities/references they make, of course this is a sonic video, not an EVA video, but I thought I'd add as well :P
How the moon and Rei represent eachother in a way because we mostly see the moon when it's a Rei scene, plus how Sage, like Rei II, sacrifices herself in a big explosion, in Sage's case WITH the moon.
    -------------
Giganto holding Sonic the same way Eva Unit 01 held Kaworu for like a whole minute (just visual reference but still cool).
    -------------
Supreme's laser wings 100% are the a visual reference to Lillith's wings of light once she like melts out of the earth or whatever.
    -------------
Knight looks like Eva Unit 05 from the Rebuilds.
    -------------
Not to mention the Death & Rebirth thing (I'm pretty sure it was intentional on your part but I wanted to mention lmao)
    -------------
Both Giganto and Supreme take from the Mass Production series and Jet Alone (The general shape + wings on Supreme and also the cilinders coming out of their bodies, although they all do that.)
    -------------
The gun that Supreme has really reminds me of the sniper from episode 06 (where they redirect all the electricity to kill Ramiel) Not really in terms of design I guess but just the concept of big robot with even bigger gun.
    -------------
Maybe I'm stretching but the theme of neglect in infancy and all that could also apply? Maybe?
    -------------
I'm sure there's more, there's no way there isn't, but it's all I got for now.
    -------------
    Extra:
Giganto's death scene looks a lot like Son Goku killing Demon King Piccolo.

The line "I'm a spark that won't go out" is probably the best line for Sonic, for more reasons that I can name, this notion of Sonic being more like a force of nature that won't ever fade away, that he's just way too cool, way too caring, way too strong, way too supportive, it's something that I've had since I read archie while I was still 12-14, since then I always knew but couldn't find a way to put it into words, and those are the exact words, no matter how close to the dirt he is, or how much it betrays my expectations, there's just this thing about Sonic being endless, it's music, side material, characters, rare moments of story, popularity, design, whatever it is, he just is; even though this game wasn't what I was expecting, and I have more bad than good to say about it, every single time I hear these lyrics, it gets me, it feels like a reward for being a fan for a good half of my life so far, it makes me know that he won't fade, that he has this spirit that although many never seem to get it right, it's still there, he truly is a spark that won't go out

Damn this video is really good for such a small channel
I will even say that is the best video on sonic frontiers yet
It reminds me of the kinds of videos we see on games years after they launched good job

51:43 ??? What was said in the guidebook? You can't leave us hanging..
48:20 Finally! This is what I'm saying, it really does'nt conflict directly with anything about the Gaia Temples. Chaos Emeralds are a power source so they could be substituted for the temples even before the ancients!

I didn't go too into the guidebook stuff here because it was mostly related to Shadow's lore! But I'll definitely be going more in depth about that at a...certain time.
