I found this video at the perfect time! I just watched the Sonic movie 2 and had a blast! Other than the 2 Sonic movies the only Sonic content I’ve seen is the show Sonic Boom. I really want to get more familiar with the Sonic characters and lore and this was super helpful! I had no idea Sonic had that many games but I’ll probably check out some game play soon! For now I’ve started Sonic X which is pretty good so far, Knuckles is my favorite I think he’s really interesting! From what I’ve seen character design wise Rouge the Bat, Amy Rose, Tails, Cream and Eggman himself are some of my favorites! I’ll definitely be getting into some great Sonic content soon, thank you for your help! :D

Hi there, I'm that guy from Holland that commented on your premiere that I would watch this video tomorrow due to it being 1 AM at the time.
    Now it's 02:30, I haven't postponed watching it, I simply couldn't wait.
Before you read this, I rarely comment on CZcams video's, probably only once or twice a year even so I'm going all out on this one.
When I saw the last 2 minutes of your premiere I just got off watching a stream of my all time favorite CZcamsr who was, in my opinion, the representative of the Dutch Sonic Community back in 2010. Nowadays he's not into Sonic anymore and doesn't like talking about it but for me, my journey with him began with Sonic.
Currently I'm 20 years old and to this day I still love the blue blur for as far as I can remember. I'm quite sure the first videogame I've ever played is a Sonic game. Sonic Adventure 2 to be precise.
As a child I loved the game even though I was just a small, dutch child that couldn't speak English. To this day, sadly, no Sonic game has ever been dubbed to Dutch.
Despite that, I instantly got hooked to the series at around 2003.
Since then my entire life has been Sonic. I'm glad that, despite my age at the time, I could still experience the games, comics and series when they came out. I quickly caught up with the classics as well.
I still fondly remembering Sonic X being dubbed in Dutch on tv. Nowadays I even have contact with some of the old cast such as the voice actor of Sonic or the voice actor of Eggman that has already retired and lives just a few blocks away from me now.
To this day I'm still trying to collect those dutch dubbed episodes because they are sadly lost for the majority of the episodes.
With all the criticism on the Dutch voice of Sonic in the recent movie, I'm even planning on audition for his role in the second part as I got in contact with one of the voice actors that have worked on the dutch dub of the movie.
Sonic is still, to this day, the reason I was able to learn English. Having played all the games at around the age of 12, finished watching all the cartoons that were out then and being caught up with the main story line of the Archie comics that I sadly had to illegally pirate due to them not being available for purchase in the Netherlands, I'm stil sure that Sonic gave me a headstart in secondary school with my English skills.
I was very much into the fanbase. Like most fans I had my cringy Sonic phase in which I loved going to forums, draw fanart and watch tons of Sonic content on CZcams, DeviantArt, Newground etc.. I'm still nostalgic for Sonic Paradox or plush CZcamsrs like Spindashpro or SonicSong182. Roger van der Weide's Sonic in minutes animations are still very beloved to me and I love his Sonic dissected series to this day. A reason for all that being he was, like me, a dutch Sonic fan.
Which brings me to my next point. I met the friends I held dearest in my life through Sonic. I had a CZcams channel in which I posted Dutch Sonic content when I was around 10-15 years old.
The CZcamsr I mentioned in the beginning was a huge help for me to reach many Dutch Sonic fans as well as a few lifetime friends I still have to this day. When I was around this age I was quite jealous of other countries having a much more connected Sonic fanbase while the dutch one was very bland. After all, this was a very niche franchise here. So i tried to do everything I could to meet as much fans as possible. I contributed tons to the fanmade Dutch Sonic Wiki. I made 2 collab channels on CZcams with the cringiest names ever (The Dutch Sonic Group and The Dutch Chao Garden). I even tried to organize an event despite being too young to have any clue how to organize a proper meetup. I was a very enthusiast fan to say the least.
At around 2015 my love for the series sadly died down a bit. I still remember making some Sonic Boom fandubs as there was no Dutch release to the cartoon at the time and I was definitly reading the Archie comics until they got cancelled but I just felt like I was growing up. I'm glad this died down though after I played Sonic Mania in 2018.
Sonic is to this day still a huge part of my life. This entire wall of text just nearly scratches the surface of how much I love this franchise. To this day my biggest hobbies probably have something to do with Sonic. I love playing the games in my off-time, dubbing the characters in projects is still a very big hobby of mine and being a historian (in training) I even try to perserve Sonic history with any small thing I can contribute.
I'm sorry for making this comment all about me, I want to give you my thoughts on your video essay as well.
I love video essays, they are my nr. 1 favorite type of content on CZcams and when I saw the notification pop up for this video I was instantly hooked. I just couldn't wait to watch it. The way how you express your love and passion to this franchise is something I look up to. I've been waiting for years for a video this elaborate and informative that tries to scratch the surface of everything a newcomer has to know and I couldn't agree more on any opinion you gave in this video. All the love and dedication put into this now make this one of my all time favorite CZcams videos ever created.
Any time somebody asks me about Sonic, I'll link them this video for sure.
Thank you so much for making this.
Sadly due to me living in The Netherlands and not having a creditcard I can't really donate to your Patreon so if possible I would like to ask your Paypal emailadres so I can send you 50 bucks over. You deserve it and I really want to show my appreciation to you this way.
You gave me a ride of nostalgia and of my past this night and I must give you something in return.
It's now 03:10 at the time of me finishing writing this comment. I hope you liked my small story and I can't wait to see what other video's you will be releasing.
    Sincerly,
    Darkie

As a really long term Sonic fan, I gotta respectfully disagree about the Sonic Boom cartoon. The series absolutely overflows with love for the franchise, a la the Sonic Twitter account.
It can be a little pandery at times, but the show really grows into its own, especially into season 2. It's clear watching it that everyone involved had a blast with it, and I'm glad I got over my initially being repelled by the seeming over-reliance on irony and self-deprecation.
Truly a shame it won't get Season 3, this show really got me going especially in season 2.

I didn't play it till way later but seeing the older kids go through Twinkle Park, Emerald Coast and Red Mountain... I dunno, it just felt almost magical. That's why even today, when I'm playing SA1 it feels "like home". It's a perfect comfort game for me, reminding me of the good old days when I had so much fun. Heroes had a pretty big part in my love for the series too, by a short demo that I would never get tired of.

Oh the Sonic Franchise, what a crazy but amazing franchise,i remember to this day that i played Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing with my cousin and i kept crashing to the walls just to see the car spin,i was stupidly happy. Years later,i saw a bunch of Sonic Content on CZcams and since then,i started loving the Blue Blur and the entire cast since, nowadays i own some games such as Sonic Free Riders,Generations,SA2 and even Lego Dimensions which had Sonic as a playable character alongside a open world and a level,i also got a IDW comic which i bought recently and i already consider it a relic of mine, because i live in Brazil and Sonic Comics are really hard to find here, the easiest way to get one is importing it,but thankfully i was able to find one in a brazilian website and i'm very happy about it! The Sonic Franchise is one of the main aspects of my chilhood and teenagehood alongside Pixar's Cars,Lab Zero Games (the ones who made Skullgirls and Indivisible) and PaRappa the Rapper,i would never trade it for nothing,i've made so many friendships with it,so many fun memories and nostalgia! The music is awesome too! I loved I Am All of Me from Shadow and Race to Win from Rivals to name a few,the characters are in my opinion one of the best things about it with my favorites being Blaze,Big and Team Chaotix. I love expressing my love for this series and i really hope it still remains of the most importants gaming series for years to come,i'm a proud Sonic Fan for years,i've seen a lot,to Fanart,to Aniamtions and even a lot of arguing with others about the franchise, who could have thought that a Blue Hedgehog with Shoes would be such an memorable thing about millions of people? I certainly didn't but... it did! I really hope this franchise continues to live on to generations and generations,i may not have every game, every comic or any sort of stuff related to Sonic, but for now,i'm just happy that this series exists,i'm very excited for Sonic's 30th Aniversary and can't wait to see what the future comes, but until then... Good on you Sonic, you're awesome ^^

This is the perfect beginning guide to all things Sonic! There's tons of drama and crap, but there's at least SOME cream you can enjoy. The first ever game I owned was Sonic Rush Adventure and slowly but surely I continued to delve into the series. All the characters and how they can bounce off of one another is what I truly love in the series. Sonic Heroes, Mania, the IDW comics, the OVA, all that awesome music. . .but the best thing about the series are the fans. Believe it or not, it's actually the saving grace of the series. It's the birth of so many beautiful things born out of the love for a blue hedgehog.

It was Thanksgiving in 1991. My family was visiting friends. Friends I didn't know. And in that house there were a bunch of kids in a dark livingroom. The only light was coming from the game Sonic The Hedgehog. Mind you it would be a few months until I actually got to play. And Mario was my first love when it comes to video games and now still has my respect. But when Sonic blew into town, the rest was history for me. For a long time it was the craze of Ninja Turtles and Sonic and TGIF. Great video. God bless and Jesus loves you.

I had the Mega Collection on PS2 and the Heroes port on PC as a kid, and I remember playing them a lot. I used the Mega Collection to play 1-3 and Knuckles, and now having played Mania.... I can confidently say that I can't stand Genesis-style Sonic. Legitimately 3D Blast was my favorite out of that collection, though for the life of me I couldn't tell you why. I really liked Generations, but the one game that keeps me from dismissing the franchise altogether is Sonic Rush. It's slick, speedy, stylish, and has one of the best soundtracks in gaming history in my opinion. All these years later, and I'm still inexplicably interested in the franchise. I keep an eye on it, hoping for one more Generations or Rush. And, I suppose, appreciating the aesthetics and fandom from a distance.
...I dunno, I think I'm two steps too contrarian to say anything valuable about the series. The passion of fans like yourself makes me wish I could see in Sonic what you all do. Great work as always.

My journey started earlier than I can remember. I was born in the early 90's in a fairly well off family (at least, we were well off at the time...), so I grew up with both Mario and Sonic. Really, I only knew about Sonic 1 and 2, and rumors of a Sonic 3 from my older brother.
It wasn't until I was about 13 that I really got into it though. You see, my brother had moved out and got himself a Dreamcast. And a few times I'd see him, and he'd bring it over 'cause he knew I loved video games. It was something we always bonded over... actually, this may even be why I decided to become a programmer!
And on my 13th or 14th birthday, he gave me his old CRTTV and Dreamcast... because he had an XBox, but he knew that I'd appreciate those games more than he did. And... I absolutely played the hell out of Sonic Adventure 2. It was my reintroduction into the series. I poured *hours* into the game. I wanted to see every single part of it. I was *way* into Chao raising. I was absolutely *crushed* when a game breaking glitch happened in the final level (possibly because it wasn't an... let's say "official"... copy of the game...), and I was *ecstatic* when I managed to hover my way back onto the course and beat the game (though, 180 emblems was still out of reach for me because of that glitch).
When I got into high school, I was *just* hearing about Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog. Not because they were new, but because no one at my school really talked about Sonic anymore. I knew people who didn't even *know* about the Adventure games... So... I kinda just forgot about everything again.
Fast forward to my college years. I had just gotten into emulators (don't judge). I played *every* game I hadn't been able to fully enjoy as a kid. Some, I dropped. I liked Sonic CD, but I never loved it enough for a second playthrough. And then... I started reading the Archie comics. I started from the very beginning. And I just kept reading. It was enthralling for me. I absolutely *loved* when Robotnik became an actual threat. And I loved when useless one-off characters showed up again and actually mattered. I remember laughing at how over the top Evil Sonic was. And... I remember crying with all the Bunnie and Antoine drama.
Yeah. It's safe to say that Archie Sonic is, like, the quintessential Sonic in my mind. And I *really* wish that the whole Ken Penders thing hadn't played out like it had, because I would love to see some of those characters and plotlines in an actual game...
After that, I just kinda... well, I still observe Sonic with a passing interest, but now everyone I know knows about Sonic's ongoings (for better or for worse). My friends let me play their copy of Sonic Mania, and I absolutely loved the game. I wanted to get the Knuckles & Knuckles ending, but it was not to be. And I still want to play Sonic '06 and Sonic Forces, but, like, as dissections of bad games (I've seen playthroughs of Sonic Boom, and that game was too boring for me to play even as a dissection). And I want to get back into the new comics.
And that's the main part of my Sonic journey. I mean, back when Sonic Boom was announced, I remember predicting a good Sonic game for 2018 (I was off by a year with Sonic Mania)... though, I was *completely* thrown for a loop with how quickly Sonic Forces dashed Sonic's good name into the dirt. Like, it wasn't even pretty. But one of my programming friends and I had a good laugh about how bad it was. We even joked about a Sonic Warriors game would work, including some rudimentary character and story design. Even though it was mostly as a joke between us, I would absolutely play the heck out of that game.

    @MLoreley Před 4 lety +3

    I can't say that I'm a Sonic fan.
Not because I dislike Sonic, but instead, because I never had the chance to connect with that fandom, that conglomerate of stories and iterations, when I was younger. More than just being in a "Nintendo Household" (it wasn't a matter of console wars for us, it was a matter of practical expenses and being able to afford more than one console), it was just that it wasn't initially appealing to me. The gameplay was not something I ever felt particularly capable of playing, since I have terrible reaction times to things, and get disoriented easily. So unfortunately, engaging with something that kinda relies on those things was always going to have that barrier.
My largest exposure to everything Sonic, for the longest time, was the impression that there was something off about the fandom; what I came across was often not child-friendly, and sadly, that ended up putting me off (Add discussion about bad actors ruining fandoms for the uninitiated across multiple fandoms here). But over the years, I got to know actual Sonic fans, and see their passion for it, the creativity it inspired, and in bits and pieces, I saw more of the appeal of Sonic itself. Because there are people like you, those who sent in voice clips, and commenters on this video, who see the best in a fandom that's suffered from a bad public image for WAY too long.
I still don't think that I can engage with the games because of what I mentioned before. And the various cartoons and comics, I don't have the same time to dedicate to absorbing all of that, even as I appreciate what it means to others. But I DID see the 2020 movie, and I thought that it was actually pretty decent; it wasn't the SAME Sonic, but to introduce people who *weren't* already Sonic fans to the appeal of the character and the story, it did a fantastic job of laying the groundwork for more of the 'absurd' aspects of Sonic. Plus, you know. It's a fun movie! It doesn't have to be perfect to be enjoyable!
I appreciate you making this video essay, Nezumi. And I know many others appreciate the positive look at a fandom that's been kicked in the stomach more than a few times (and has endured anyway). For all the hard work that went into this, it was worth it.

Gamewise, my top picks for places to start would be either Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or Sonic Mania for the classic style games, and Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes or Sonic Generations for the 3D games. i first started playing sonic via emulation at the age of 5. i never had a console when i was younger and just a pc, so my dad set up an emulator for me to play all 3 sonic games. i would play those games non stop, i even remember i pretended to be sick one day so i could just play sonic 3 instead on going to school. there was a point where i annoyed my friends by talking about sonic so much that my mom banned me from anything sonic for a month. (that was the longest month of my life _~_)
i eventually got sonic generations for xbox 360 from one of my friends for my birthday, i would have to wait until i went to my uncles place to play the game on his xbox 360 though. i still remember excitedly looking at the box of the game and i still even have that exact copy.
i would then go on to play sonic unleashed, 06, adventure 1 and 2, and many more and never did i stop loving sonic the hedgehog. honestly i dont think i can ever NOT love sonic. The only time i didnt, it only lasted for acouple months after forces came out.

I hardly know where to begin.
I'm honestly... so overwhelmed by the love and care put into this video, by all the passion brought to the table by so many people, that... I can hardly think of words to type.
I'm... not in the best position. I'm not a voice actor or artist, and no matter how much I want to go into game development and writing, it's... a massive hurdle to even start.
Like, it's generous to even call me an amateur hobbyist writer. It's honestly... kinda pathetic.
And in hindsight, I almost feel guilty that I don't have as much interest or experience in Sonic outside of the games...
I don't know how old I was - 6, maybe? I can just barely remember my very early childhood, and no memory of Sonic comes to mind... but it's difficult to think that far back. So I'm just gonna have a guess that I was around 6. If I dig even deeper into my past, I may even remember where it was bought, but that doesn't matter in the end.
It was a blue plug-n-play SEGA Genesis, with 6 games, one of them being Sonic the Hedgehog 1. Though it really isn't my favorite, in fact, next to SA1, it's probably one of my least favorites of the ones I played- i feel... like I have to at least give it _some_ respect.
Without it, I wouldn't have met my girlfriend or my best friend...
I only beat Sonic 1 on my own around the time Generations came out, and that's when I decided I didn't really like it... but Sonic 2?
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of if not my favorite game, Sonic or not. Sonic 1 may have been my introduction, fittingly, but Sonic 2 means so much more to me.
7 years old on my birthday, I was given a Walmart giftcard and we went to Walmart to buy me a gift. I'm in the toy section, being the young kid I am, and this section also holds a lot of games - mostly board games or the cheap plug-n-play kinda stuff. And that's what I got - just like my mom's blue one, I got a red one with six other Genesis games. But the only one I really cared about what Sonic 2. And I played it on and off for over a year, slowly getting further and further, until finally...
Sonic 2 was the first video game I ever beat. Without even knowledge of the Sonic fandom or what a fan character even was or how to make characters, I made my very first Sonic fan character that night in almost celebratory glee, right before I went to sleep.
And yes, they were a red hedgehog named Pyro. Though they are completely different now, I've kept them around as my oldest original character ever - they were mostly based on me, and they changed alongside me, now being a phoenix named Pyra.
But like- seriously though. Me beating Sonic 2 was huge for me. After that, it was a snowball effect of passion and... _light obsession_ that brought me years of happiness and close friends. Sonic is a big part of me, and I care about the fandom so much and I look forward to SAGE and the Sonic Hacking Contest every year.
    I just-
Like many people here, I love Sonic. His games, his story, his music, _his world_ are fantastic distractions that get the creative juices flowing and even when I'm not feeling so great, when dysphoria and depression are beating me down, with homelessness and covid ramping my anxiety into the fucking stratosphere, I always have the little blue prick and other fans of his I've met along the way to keep me sane.

I remember discovering a Let’s Play of this weird game called Sonic Generations, so I checked it out and thought that it was really cool, with how fast paced everything was and how colorful it was too. So I tried to find out more about Sonic and then discovered Sonic X, which really made me fall in love with the franchise and it’s characters. From there I discovered many Sonic CZcamsrs like Cobanermani456 and such. I had gone to the App Store and played as many Sonic games as I could on there, such as the Classic games ports (which I came to love to this day). Then finally in 2017 Sonic Mania came out for the Switch, and I got to really play my first true Sonic game.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING SOME LOVE TO SONIC ADVANCE 2. As my entry point to the franchise (though I never really became super entrenched in the Sonic fandom) it holds a special place in my heart as easily my favorite Sonic game despite it’s few questionable design choices (the late game difficulty spike of Sky Canyon’s plethora of bottomless pits made it so I never finished the game as a kid, the requirements to reach the special stages, and while I have nostalgia for them the runner bosses can be *really* frustrating to fight unless your playing as Cream, as well as the complete lack of instruction from the game in regards to the R-button maneuvers you can do that are basically required late game to get through the levels smoothly). So thank you for mentioning the advance games and showing them the respect they deserve as unique entries in the Classic Sonic style with a Modern Sonic coat of paint.

My first exposure to Sonic was when I saw my older brother playing Sonic Heroes with my dad watching after he had rented it from blockbuster in 2006. It wasn't long before I had my "it's my turn on the xbox" moment and played it for the first time. Since it was rented, we had to return it shortly afterward, but it quickly became one of our most frequently rented games, to the point where the cost of renting it again and again started to outweigh the cost of just buying it, so that's what they did. I remember I was never able to get past the point in the power plant where you're running from the rising lava, and I would daydream about what the levels after it would be like. I unfortunately don't remember my reactions to any of the following levels that I made it to after we bought the game and I finally made it past the insurmountable wall that the power plant level was to my younger self, but I must have been stoked.

I was a sonic film enthusiast as a kid . I never truly played the games but I definitely treated the games cutscenes as movies (which honestly made all the 3D games my favorites help. Of course the animated shows and CZcams/Deviantart were my gateway into the franchise

My first Sonic game was Sonic and the Secret Rings. I got that along with Animal Crossing: City Folk on my very first console, the Nintendo Wii. To this day, I have a deep love for both franchises.
Sonic and the Secret Rings was not a perfect game. Hell, it wasn't even a great game. But it introduced me to a character I have an unrelenting love for. I will never dislike that game, and I will never not have fun playing it. Every time I pop that disk in, I remember my childhood wonder.

Honestly, i'd almost argue that 06 was the start of the boost era instead of unleashed. Sonic's mach-speed sections are almost like a rough draft of boost. High speed along a fairly linear path. And while you don't boost on command you can lightspeed dash for extra speed

Sorta, I guess? But a controlled boost _did_ come before in Sonic Rush, in 2005.

What's weird is, I like the boom series not for its jokes or 4th wall breaks but more for the characters just relaxing with each other, working off each other and well show their personalities through.
It's a mixed bag imo, amy is the perfect example of adding personality to a character that had none. For years she was either "that annoying girl who stalks sonic" or "minnie mouse", now she actually questions sonic, doesn't go into crazy anger on seconds and actually cares for other characters more than... well, what heroes did. (I will get my dear sonic!... oh and your frog and friend too... yeah... totally the reason).
Then you have knuckles which is why I don't entirely love the show. He could of had a personality but nah, he's dumb! Sure he had the best jokes but, they're just dumb guy jokes. It's a hit or miss thing for me.

The first thing you gotta tell people is that the games are not about going fast, but mucking around in labyrinths while managing your speed. That is, if they're thinking about the first few games. "Gotta Go Fast" really penetrated and it's your job as a fan to limit the effect that had in people. -- me, an ex-fan that jumped off the train just before Sonic Heroes hit.
