  • The 2004 Mustang Mach 1 split the difference between the GT and the "Terminator" Cobra, by keeping the live rear axle but adding a non-supercharged version of the 32V 4.6L Cobra engine with a trademark "Shaker" Hood.

it's not stock. It has magnaflow exhaust and slightly larger injectors, if I remember right. Anyway he was told by the guy he bought it from that it was 400rwhp and that it used to be supercharged. I would believe 400 on the SC but not on what it's running now.
Also he refuses to admit that his 3rd gear is stripped like hell and keeps telling me I'm shifting it wrong.

Digging this up again. Everything Matt disliked about it was either driver error or could be fixed with aftermarket parts.
1- Says turn in is great but lots of steering input. There is a 12.7:1 ratio rack available for this year Mustang, that’s almost as quick as an s2000 rack.
2-He realized he was dogging the engine and after getting it up in the revs it “comes alive” Gears would solve this, and help it with better corner exit speed.
3-Manageable mid corner bump from SRA can be remedied with panhard bar and torque arm will be great for 7/10ths canyon driving. Add springs and shocks and it would be night and day.
So really Matt loves the car but his biases couldn’t let him see that.

did I just hear this supposed "professional" car reviewer saying something about Mach 1's from the 90's, and a 3V in a new edge?.... I think he also stated that the Bullitts outshined the mach 1's....would love to know how that is considering the Bullitts are only rated at 265hp, and are basically glorified gt's that only came in 2 colors and had some badging and VERY MINOR tweaks to make it just barely different from a gt, and the mach 1's are completely different 4v's rated at 305 hp....hell the owner didn't even know a whole lot about his own car stating the curb weight on them was 3200lbs, when unless this one had some weight reduction, they were 3400lb cars. Not sure I've ever cringed so much in 15 mins during a car "review" listening to one guy spout off one wrong thing after another, and the owner agreeing with him.... I can understand maybe getting a number off here or there, but Matt clearly has very little knowledge about this car at all, and even though he owns a mustang, I'm really wondering about his knowledge of mustangs in general. Hard to believe this guy gets paid to do this for a living. Someone hire me.....I guarantee I can drive as good as he can, and I'd make sure to actually know about whatever car it was I was reviewing. I've got a 2003 cobra with only 16,000 miles on it, but no way would I let him review it, because no telling what kind of wrong shit he'd say during that little ride....he'd probably tell me it pulled good for a 2v 5.4 liter with a turbo on it or something crazy like that....lmao

@@lollol-xp4mc It shows. Always liked when the rich kids came to street race back in the day in the late 90s and early 2000s when I was doing that. Mommy and daddy would buy them the newest camaro or mustang out there, all for them to get beat by a 10 year old at the time 5.0 that was built by me and my brother for half of what they had in their cars, because we actually had to work for our stuff and didnt get to go pick out something new off a dealer showroom. The funniest was watching a kid one night talk about how his brand new white with hugger orange anniversary edition camaro that was bone stock was the fastest car out there, and the pure joy I got from his face when he handed over the $300 we were racing for that night. That little notchback foxbody I had back then almost made him cry. He probably went home and told his parents he wanted something else because we never saw him or that car around town again....lol

Nice review. I had a '98 Cobra with the earlier version of the same 4.6 32V motor. Matt is right the car really comes alive in the upper rpm range. First two mods, I put 3.73 gears in my car and a PRO 5.0 shifter, these totally changed the drive-ability of the car. Later I did some suspension mods, subframe connectors, control arms, shocks, solid steering rack bushings etc. The car was still a great daily driver and a lot of fun on open track driving events. I miss it.

The 32v DOHC "Cobra" 4.6 is a great motor; aluminum heads and block, and hand built by SVT. A custom "Tune", gears, and full exhaust really open these motors up. They sound amazing. With full bolt on's the are in the 300-330whp range. Not bad for a 10-15 year old platform.

    • @keystonekrawler6242
      @keystonekrawler6242 Před rokem

@@petrolhead8851Incorrect, massively. I own TWO 2004 Mach 1’s. One (Azure Blue) is bone stock, the other (Torch Red) only has the stock block, heads and 3650) and the car makes 717rwhp/663tq.
The 2001 Bullitt was NOT just an exclusive color GT with Bullitt badges. It was a GT, yes, but it was more. The Bullitt’s came from the factory with Cobra brakes (just like the Mach 1’s did). The Bullitt came with a custom aluminum upper/lower intake that gave it a slight bump in power….unlike the normal GT that came with the plastic intake. (I used to own a ‘99 GT).
The Bullitt had lowered coil springs and a stiffer suspension setup compared to the GT. The coils were lower than the Mach 1’s as well. In terms of height the GT sat the highest, then the Mach 1 was a bit lower and the Bullitt sat the lowest stock. They all had different part numbers for the coil springs. The Bullitt was the first Mustang to use the 3650 5 speed. The Bullitt’s were built to handle better than a normal GT and were meant to be a more simple looking car compared to the normal GT (Think: Police detective on a budget…). The Bullitt was also a numbered car, there were two spots on the car that had a unique number printed on a hologram decal. One on the driver’s side strut tower, and the other under the back seat (driver’s side) behind the carpet. Ford themselves had a third decal for each car.
Folks just didn’t understand the Bullitt, and many still don’t. Some see them and think “Meh, it’s just a boring ugly green GT….where’s the wing? Where’s the scoops?”. Those folks just don’t know how to research to save their lives. 😂
Many parts from the Bullitt project ended up carrying over to the Mach 1’s. The brakes, the sail panels (again, unique to the Bullitt, even stamped “Bullitt”), the (unique to the Bullitt) shift ball, pedal pads, shifter trim ring….all carried over to the Mach. Originally the Bullitt was to have the 2003 Cobra rear bumper cover as well as the SVT built 4 valve but they couldn’t make it happen. The Mach 1 was originally supposed to also have the Bullitt’s unique side skirts, but in the end they went with the normal GT skirts….which is a bummer since those side skirts are as rare as hens teeth (nobody makes them anymore).
But to say the Bullitt was just paint and badges is flat out wrong. It’s a very original and unique car. For the right Bullitt I’d probably trade my Azure Blue Mach 1 for one. They rock.

The Mach 1 motor is actually the "InTech" V8 carried over from the Lincoln line. They run on C-Heads (96-98 Cobras were A-Head, 99-01 were B-Head) so there are a few key differences. The Mach 1 also has its own camshaft profile, shared with the Terminators. The only way to find an identical motor to the Mach 1 is the 03-04 Lincoln Aviator (they come with the cast crank and 6k redline like the automatic Mach 1s)
    TL;DR
    It's not a hand-me-down Cobra engine.

The aluminum block weighs about 80 LBS less than the cast iron block. Both are equally reliable unless you overheat the engine pretty bad in that case iron is more forgiving. The iron block used in the Cobra is also stronger for high horsepower modifications over the aluminum block in the Mach 1 but the older aluminum block found in 1996-2001 Cobras is about as strong as the Iron block. The Teksid aluminum block is the stronger one. The later WAP aluminum block is less strong

PistnRods Depends mostly on what type of cars you've driven. Modern Mustangs aren't exactly "light" but, 3,200 is on the lighter side of the two-door sports car-muscle car spectrum. Now, if you drive a lot of 80s-90s japanese cars, like your 240sx or Honda Civic, then those will be lighter for sure. Like the guy above me said, "electric everything and power this and that.." More and more safety features also tack on weight as the years go by. 3,200 lbs is on the light side, even in the current Japanese line-ups.

I'm sure a nice carbon fiber or aluminum one piece driveshaft, along with 3.73 gears, and a lightweight aluminum flywheel would do wonders for this engine regarding the laziness feeling you were talking about. My brother basically has these mods, except he just added a Centerforce DF clutch to go with the aluminum flywheel, and he has FRPP 4.10 gears in his modded 2008 GT Premium Coupe. He has an aluminum one piece driveshaft from The Driveshaft Shop. Those upgrades really made a night and day difference in acceleration. His GT also has a Steeda CAI/HF Elbow, SCT-Bama 93 octane race tune, BBK twin 62mm throttle body, Steeda UD crank pulley, Steeda CMDP's, a Borla Stinger exhaust system and a Hurst shifter, plus interior and exterior cosmetic mods.

Always thought an opened up Mach 1 was the best sounding mustang from 99-'18. Besides the supercharger whine of the 03-04 cobra, the Mach wins the ear challenge. There was one running around my hometown in my most obsessed SVT days (was a proud owner of an 01 Lightning lightly modded, 420whp) that could be heard a mile down the road and it made me a believer in the Mach 1 platform. Such a wonderful unique sounding stang.

Pretty cool how it's a Mach 1, but doesn't have the flashy Mach 1 stripes. Makes it look more like a standard GT with a shaker scoop.... I like cars like that. It's the anti-racecar appeal. You see this with other cars too- people take E63s and make them look like E350s, or take M3s and make them look like 325s, etc.
4.6 sounds nice when you get on it too! The New Edge cars have really grown on me over the past few years. Like any car, I'd still need to have a shit ton of work done to it. But with a Lunati torque cam, long tube headers, some lightweight wheels and stick tires, and a lot of weight reduction, it'd be a fun spirited driving machine.
