Oxi One Modulation and LFOs tutorial Part 1 - Building Blocks of Modulation with Modular Synths

- The Oxi One modulation lanes and LFOs are ideal for controlling your modular setup, but configuring them can be overwhelming at first. This is the first in a 3 part series explaining how to use the Oxi One modulation lanes, LFOs and envelopes to create cool effects and movement in your sounds.
In Part 1 I explain how to use modulation with CV/gate outputs and a modular synth, and also how to map an LFO to an external CV output. Part 2 explains how to modulate parameters on MIDI synths, and Part 3 covers internal modulation to change the patterns and rhythms on the Oxi One.
Part 1 covers how to use mod lanes and Eurorack: • Oxi One Modulation and...
Part 2 goes into more details on MIDI modulation: • Oxi One Modulation Tut...
Part 3 explains how to make evolving generative beats using modulation: • Oxi One Modulation and...

Thanks a lot @Synthdad for another amazing tutorial!
A few notes:
- Firmware 3.5 has been released that includes among other features:
+ possibility to Lfo Restart on note trigger
+ Lfo phase control
+ Cross modulation between LFOs, Mod lanes and external CV.
So for example you can let Lfo 2, a Mod lane or the external CV input modulate the Lfo 1 rate, amount or waveform settings.
- Note velocity actually controls the amplitude of the AD envelope and the note gate determines the Decay of the envelope.
Happy patching!!!
oxi one is a joke compared to modulations and lfos on the hapax. im so glad i sold my one for hapax.
@@alien_brain Don't be fooled, In OXI One you can do cross modulation between LFOs and MOD lanes. Also the MOD lanes are fully independent from the sequencer which is not available in the hapax
@@oxiinstruments they don't need to be unless you're making wind chime music. Squarp guys really know what's useful to a musician
@@alien_brain That's not realy nice, and true. For me it's the other way, I had some Squarp sequencer and realy have a better musical feeling with the oxi one. They are both realy realy good sequencer and I'm glad there one for each taste. Personnaly I went with oxi and no regrets at all
@@lenylecointre3304 nice? how about true? true isnt always nice. pyramid wasnt nearly as amazing as hapax
Been waiting on a video for the modulation on Oxi . Thanks synthdad!
More to come in Parts 2 and 3.
The Oxi One certainly would be a nice thing to have. Great video!
Great explanation of the version 3 firmware. The development and expansion of the Oxi One feature set is really exciting.
It is coming along in leaps and bounds!
great tutorial!
Ace video … you single-handedly pushed me over the fence 😅
Really enjoyed this, gets me up to speed on a few features 😁 thanks!
Great to hear!
Great video! If it’s not too much of a technical hassle, would love to see a super-imposed window of just the oxi display (for us fellow synth dads who are watching on our phone screens!)
Good suggestion and one I've experimented with doing. I'll make a note to add that for future videos
now thaaat sounds GREAT! synthdad is my one stop for how to use my gear.
Thanks - appreciate it, I try! Let me know if you've suggestions for future videos
@@SynthDad you seem to know a lot synthdad! Do you make music or do you just pretend
@@alien_brain I just pretend but I do want to make more music to release over time
@@SynthDad well the good thing is for some people that's all music is: pretending
@@SynthDad maybe you could show me how to make some jump up drum and bass?
Thanks for this! still waiting for that video where you just make a song, using several modes (chords, arp, mono, poly) and use the arranger for instance and harmonizer mode
This is without question the best and most versatile sequencer out there. The more I am understanding, the more this is becoming the main sequencer in my live performances, so thank you for your insight. As a small unwanted suggestion, I feel as beautiful as your face is, it might be worth just putting the screen of the OXI one in place of it, so people can actually see whats going on :)
You mean my big bald head isn't attractive enough!!! :) I'll try to get better shots of the Oxi screen for my next series of videos. I just moved house so my standard studio setup was packed away so I was improvising here
@@SynthDad HAHA it's beautiful man
@@siofcreation I would say that really depends. Have you tried the hapax yet
@@alien_brainhapax is way pricier, and no modular interface like the pipe.
@@andrewnancarrow you gotta pay to play. hapax has a lot more under the hood. i use FH-2 if i want modular control but i mostly do midi stuff,
thanks synthdad1!
My pleasure!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
@@SynthDad Would you be able to share a link to the HDMI cable you're using?
@@DR_01 Absolutely, whatever you get make sure it's a HDMI2 cable. A regular HDMI cable won't work. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B091Y6DXKX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
Great stuff! One correction would be that i believe it‘s not the note velocity relating to the trig envelope decay time, it‘s the gate length of the note. The velocity just defines the envelope amplitude (which on the scope in a rhythmic pattern can make the visual impression of varied decay times). Correct me if i‘m wrong!
Good point! Thanks for that correction
Thanks for your great tutorials 👍I'm currently experimenting with CV in modulation. From what I've learned a TRS cable should be used. but I can only get the clock out of the modulation from e.g. Pam. Even if I just want to modulate something. oxi automatically jumps into clock synchronization. Any idea how to set it up properly. Perhaps you have already dealt with this topic in one of your clips? cheers
Hi - that's not something I've experimented with but let me look into it
Have you experienced any latency using the HDMI cable as appose to patching directly from the device, I moved from Midi sequencing to CV so not to deal with any latency, I want to order the Pipe Breakout but hesitant. I have watched your OXI videos several times with the manual next to me and your work is incredible. Cheers!!!
I've seen no latency - it's a direct wired connection from the CV/gate outs so no processing is performed
Is there a way to change the cv to a range between -5 to 5v?
You can output from -3V to +5v on the CV outputs already
@@SynthDad hey Synthdad, thanks for the quick answer. Yes I saw in the manual that the output is -3 to +5v. But I was wandering if I need a way to boost the cv and offset it so I can sequence the scan knob on my Arbhar which is from -5 to +5v. But i hoped it would be possible on the oxi without the need of a seperate module.
Seems incredible but I’m so confused on basically everything
It can be an overwhelming amount to take in, but just start with one somple use case and build from there
I know NE modules are popular, but their sound has never much appealed to me. Modules that are more interesting to modulate, in my opinion, include some from MI, like Rings, Elements and the Plaits that’s there in his rack.
That's the lovely thing about modular - there's an oscillator out there for everyone!
@2:58 WHAT DID YOU SEE
I've seen some things man...
