  • Hello everyone.
Happy new year to all of you here on CZcams, I hope you've had a great Christmas and great new year too!
This year, I aim to do more reviews of different Keyboards, I also aim to learn more songs on my Genos and other videos as well.
To start the new year off, in the next 4 videos, I will be showing you everything that's on the Yamaha PSS-580 Portasound Keyboard which was released in 1988 or 1989.
The PSS-580 is basically a scale down of the Yamaha PSS-680 which I have showed years ago, the PSS-580 has the exact same Sounds, Styles and Demo Song as the PSS-680 but it doesn't have everything the PSS-680 has such as an extra octave of keys, a pitch bend wheel, and drum pads at the bottom of the Keyboard etc, there is also another Keyboard which was exactly the same as the PSS-580 called the PSS-480, I think the only difference is a different colored casing and different colored buttons.
On this video, I'll be doing a Tutorial of the Yamaha PSS-580 going through the Functions & Features and showing you how to use the different Functions & Features so you can get to know how to use the PSS-580 if you have this Keyboard or are thinking of getting one.
In the next video, I will be showing the 100 voices on this Keyboard.
    Enjoy!

Nice video! I have the PSS-680, had it for about a year now since finding it in a charity shop. Every time I sit down with it I seem to make a new sound or find a cool hidden feature :)
In case you aren't aware, you can create loops by recording a melody as you normally would, then press the melody button as if to play it back (but don't press start yet), then hold record and press a chord button, then the start button. This will record your melody into the chord memory - if you press stop before the end of the bar the melody will loop forever when you play back the chord button. You can record all five melodies at once or any mixture of the five into the chord memory, useful for building songs.
You can also create midi sequences on a computer and play them back into the melody memory, if you want things nice and quantized.
RIght now my favourite trick I learned very recently is to sequence a melody on the computer and record it into melody 1. Then I use the pitchbend in the midi editor/piano roll to detune the same sequence very slightly flat (a few cents), then record that into melody 2. Then I do the same again and detune it by the same amount but sharper, then record that into melody 3. When you play all 3 back together, you get a REALLY nice chorus/unison effect which sounds fantastic on bass and lead sounds - makes it sound more like an analog synth! You can also use the same midi pitchbend technique to record detuned notes and melodies which, when played at the same time as other melodies, create microtonal chords!
Hope you enjoy my tips :)

Just followed your twitter. I am soon getting hold of a PSS-480, this tutorial is the blind persons' PDF manual in audio form, very well described. I also own a Genos with voice guide installed on a memory stick. The 480's ariving on the 10th of october around then. I want to get involved with FM synthesis a bit more without having loads of operaters to deal with and I already own a VL-1 casio which is superb and very retro low-fi which I love.

Can't believe you got both of the keyboards that i had when younger. You can make some kool sounds with the synths, spent hours on it. The power connect socket is dodgy on the one i got now unfortunately.

DOOMBRAIN thanks for your comment! Yes my PSS-580 also has a dodgy power supply so if you move it around too much, it’ll turn off so you’ll have to wiggle it about for it to turn in again, it is to do with the solderings inside, I may have to resolder it sometime as they might be cracked inside.
      Thanks for watching!

@ KeyboardKrazy49 There a few features you missed. The custom drummer feature also allows you to mute any of the drum sounds and accents and rolls to the rhythms. You just have to enter the custom drummer mode and hold down one of the lowest keys while pressing any of the highest. Why not give it a try.

Just so you know I had this keyboard when I was 10 and @7:01 in transpose mode the middle LED is working normally, it is not supposed to be lit when showing transpose values. mine didn't and I had it from new. There is a full stop after the first LED to let you know it's in transpose mode.

I'm not sure. I'm blind so I can't see what model it is. I remember that it sounded similar but I don't think it had the synthesizer and drum pad.
