Good Job. Nice Projekt. For those who do not have the ground sheet Material:
Use on of those blue IKEA bags. The Material is very strong and the floor is exactly the size you need for the 'inner tub'. Just add some gorilla tape for structure. Done. Nice extra for me: the color matches perfectly with the helinox blue....
Thanks for the tips! I know a guy that used a dog food bag for this. Still going!
I like yours better than the commercial version because it can act as a waterproof tray under my chair. I might make one with a small snapped pocket that can hold my headlamp, lighter, and other camp essentials while sitting around the fire. Thanks for the inspiration
I have considered filling it with ice to keep the beers cold!🤣🍺
That’s fantastic. I have the chair but was reluctant to buy the groundsheet or feet. This will do it. Thank you.
Thanks! This worked perfectly with a big dog food bag. 1.23 pounds total without the original carry case which is now unnecessary.
That is awesome! I bet you will get a lot of use out of that. Thank you for sharing
I made this and used it snow camping. Worked perfectly on top of deep snow that had been stamped down with snowshoes. Thanks for the video. I weigh 230 so it will work for pretty much everybody.
Glad to hear it is working out for you. That is awesome. They work great. I was just using mine on a winter camping trip in the mountains. It has yet to let me down. Thank you for letting me know you made one. I am sure you will get much use out of it. Mine is still going strong. Thanks for watching Mark! Cheers
Great advice man, I don’t understand why this video did not get more views it’s FREAKING AWESOME!!!! Such a simple yet effective design. Thanks again great video
Much appreciated! Now go make one! LOL worth it
Nice job Justin. You can even fill the tub up with ice and you’re within arm’s reach of grabbing a cold one. Thanks for sharing.
What a great idea!!!!! That is what I love about the youtube machine! The sharing of ideas !LOL ! You just took the groundsheet to another level. I wish I had thought of that and put it in the video.........Next time......
@@ItsGoodintheWoods glad you liked it. I dig the ideas that you have come up with. ATB Mike
this was very useful and also worked for the helinox high back. I like how the corners tuck into each other
I am glad to hear it works for the high back!! That is great. The way the corners tuck in is awesome. Makes it a carry case! Dual purpose!
Thanks! I’m tired of my chair sinking into soft ground. I knew there had to be a simple solution that wasn’t $50
This DIY hack is amazing! Well worth the time and effort. Let me know how yours works out for you
Wow! I love this--it is exactly what I needed!!
This works. Absolutely worth the time and effort
Genius! Now my chair won’t sink in the mud anymore.
I didn’t try it out in mud ….I’m sure it will help a lot. it works in sand! Thanks for watching !
Followed your steps exactly and it works perfectly. Bit rough and ready, but free and it all fits in the bag. I'm glad I didn't throw the old gazebo tarp out. I knew it would be handy one day. Thank you
That is fantastic! I am glad to hear it worked out for you! Thank you for letting me know
What an ingenious idea! Thanks for sharing. I love that the tub bottom serves as a clean space that can protect a book or electronics from dirt and moisture!
You are welcome! Thank you. Mine is still going strong
Haven't read through the comments yet but another good thing is that you essentially made it way more Waterproof. So say you are hiking in...or have it strapped to a pack or in a water bottle holder. If it's raining while you're hiking and stops when you get to where you want to camp then you have a dry chair ready to go
I never even considered the waterproof aspect. Thank you for pointing that out
I made one of these for my camp chair this weekend and tried it out in the backyard on some packed down snow.
It worked very well!
I'm looking forward to giving it a better test on a short backcountry trip in a few weeks.
Thanks for the idea!
Awesome! Glad to hear it! Mine is over a year old now. Still trucking along. It is an awesome little DIY project. I have faith you will get a lot of good use out of it.
Inspiring. I used a reusable grocery bag. Don’t eye ball the cutting. I didn’t and it sloppy. But it works.
Good enough! I am sure it gets the job done
thats awesome! i think im going to try one made out of tyvek.
Go for it! I have seen people do that since I made this video. They work well, lightweight, but they do tend to fail at a quicker rate. Regardless, a worthy modification.
Thank you for the tip and the details on construction. I have so many excess tarps I couldn't bring myself to throw away. I'm glad to have a new use for them (other than dragging stuff to the scrap pile).
I knew I couldn't be the only one who saves scrap pieces of tarp! This hack is awesome. It works so well. Mine is still going strong!
Love it, Justin! Thanks.
Thank you very much
Clever, nice work!

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing this.

Very good tips, thank you👍🏻👍🏻
My pleasure!
Made one today and loved it. It works great
Awesome! You just greatly enhanced the performance of your chair!
Great advice my friend
Thank you
So, yeah man, I did it and it worked! Thanks a bunch! Instead of a tarp, I used a dogfood bag. Also I made the walls lower and I can wrap it all inside the Helinox stuff sack. It came out to 2.6 oz. I need another go at it. Yours is still a little prettier. 😁👍
Awesome way to re use a dog food bag! That is great!
This is absolutely awesome. I am going to make one right away
Do it! This is a worthwhile project. You won't regret it
Excellent job, regards from Ireland.
Thank you! Cheers!
I wondered how you made that as well. Thanks for sharing.
Give it a go ! It’s pretty easy. Thank you for watching
Thank you very much Justin. Awesome. Inspiring. Very happy to learn about this for my little ole Zero chair. I’d been looking online tonight without luck to finally cave in buy one of these. I so jazzed to happen upon your great vid looking for something else. Cheers. Happy trails to you. 🙏🏼🐾🎶 Stay safe.

Thanks for this. I just finally got a chair, so I'll be going tomorrow to get a tarp to cut up. I might just one-up the idea and make a strap to actually secure it all together once rolled up! Thanks again. You just earned a new sub!
Let me know how it works out for you. Mine is still in use to this day. A worth while diy project. To bad you didn't have some scrap pieces laying around, or an old tarp to cut up. Thank you for subscribing to the channel. I appreciate your support
Oh man, I need that for in the hot tent badly! Thanks for sharing Justin. 🤙
I hear ya man! I can not wait to try this in snow! Can't wait!
@@ItsGoodintheWoods I did end up making this and used it on my last trip. Works amazing!
Nice one thanks
This thing works!!!!
Nice shop!

Great video 👍

To all the American youtuber. Nearly the complete world uses metrical units. Please press during the measuring once the unit button on the scale. So everybody knows the weight.
I will try to be more mindful of that in the future. Thank you for the suggestion.
In the UK we use both, so inches are fine, but it's usually metric here but old habits die hard.. But yeah I did have to Google what 1.5 inches was in cm!
This is a superb idea man, thx for sharing. I suck at DIY, but this seems easy enough, even I will try this out.
Cheers!
A very worth while project. You can do it!
This gives me an idea.....💡
Word
Great idea! I used your idea and made one out of scrap Tyvek. 3/4 oz / 23 grams. Thanks!
That is awesome! I would like to make one from tyvek, but I can't seem to kill mine. lol. I am sure you will get a lot of use out of that. Keep me posted on how that works out for you please.
Genius!
This thing works! Still going strong
Great idea!! I found a cheap knock off ground sheet on Amazon that works well but to have something that also works as the case could be even better.
Yes! Being the ground sheet also serves as the case, it's one less thing to keep track of. Sometimes less is more!
Thank you for watching and commenting. Let me know what you think of it if you make one.
excellent, I've been waiting for this video, I can now see where i was a bit sloppy with my version lol
Keep me posted on how the next one comes out!
@@ItsGoodintheWoods here you go, you have my permission to laugh

This is a good idea... I've been using a scrap square of carpet, but this would be a more lightweight solution
This would absolutely save you some weight. I plan to make more out of different materials to see just how light I can get it. Let me know if you try it. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers
Sweet I was hoping there would be a diy video!
It's kinda funny because I filmed the process and ended up not using it in the first video. I felt like it really interrupted the flow of the video, and I didn't want the video to be too long. So I just took it all out. I never would have done a how to video on it. Thought never crossed my mind. Looking back on it, it seems like the obvious direction to go, But it didn't come to me. The video really was inspired by a viewer comment. Pretty cool. I hope you are having a great holiday weekend
Great job
Thank you Bud. Enjoy your weekend\. Cheers
@@ItsGoodintheWoods u also!
Sweet video! Wonder if Tyvek would be tougher material. And hey, your carry case is highly water repellent! Great job!
Tyvek will work well. I have since seen some people make them from tyvek
I just got a camp chair and cut the bottoms off 4 empty beer tins to use but I'm gonna make one of these now. Great idea, thanks for sharing 👍
LOL! I have used crushed beer cans in the past!!! It works.🤣
@@ItsGoodintheWoods The pro is I've usually got 4 tins on a camp...the con is I have to drink them standing 🤣
@@justvin7214 🤣
Nice. I'll be doing this myself. Thanks for the how to. I'm constantly using mine on sand.
Do it! You are going to notice a huge difference! I am looking forward to hearing about your experience with it. I am 100% confident that you will be quite pleased
@@ItsGoodintheWoods will do man. Maybe I'll do a quick video and let people know It's Good In The Woods solved a huge problem lol.
@@projectknifehand Feel free to do your own video on it. That would be awesome!
Great MYOG project. I own the Helinox Chair One with a ground sheet from Helinox, but I'll be making my own (possibly) from a Ikea Bag, since I don't have leftover tarp scraps!
That is a good idea! Please let me know how it turns out.
I don't have any tarps or similar fabric, was just wondering what I could use instead, so thanks for this idea!
Thanks for that idea - I did ask on Freecycle for any tarp scraps, but I do have a Tesco bag that is very similar to an Ikea one....that might do.
wow, that me off to make one
Mine is still going strong! Keep me posted please!
Ha! Brilliant. Rip leaf tarp
🤣
Very interesting !
Coming from Lezleys Adventures
Thank you for taking the time to check out the channel!
Wondering if you ever did try to recreate this with Tyvek or something similar?
I have not, because this one just won't die!
Great video! You deserve more views, and I'll check out your channel after this. Question though: what is a "drop" (?) fro a tarp, as you called it. and how did you have one kicking around for free? Should I buy a certain style tarp just for cutting up?
Thanks man. A "drop" is a piece of tarp that is cut out from the original tarp. In this case, it was a scrap piece of tarp that I kept from a project I did a few years ago. I made a hot tent from a tarp, and I kept the scrap pieces because I suspected I could use them for patches on the tent if need be. Came in quite handy for this chair project. This is an awesome DIY project. But, it only makes sense if you have some sort of material laying around so you don't have to buy anything.
Thanks for stopping by Ron. I hope you enjoy some of the other content as well.
Great video! Have you made an updated version yet? I would love to know what you have done different.
Thank you. I have not made an updated version yet, because this one is still working flawlessly! It's great!
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Ahh thats great! I will make one myself this week

@@MeetMeOutside Thanks man!
Making is always more enjoyable than buying. I wonder o if Tyvek will work.
Gary, great idea . Betcha tyvek would work awesome !
I agree! Tyvek is on my list ....
i guess you could tape magnets to it to keep it closed when all packed up, not that it needs it
Options are good!
Cool idea, however u have about 2oz of tape! Sew the corners.... 🤟🏻
Yes. I aim to make a much lighter one that I will put a bit more time and effort into. This is a first attempt. And it is still working like a charm. Just used it for a 3 day trip in the mountains that I just got back from.
The next one will be of lighter material, and I will try sewing it
Nyc 👍🏻
Thank you
Cheers
If bigger......cheap tent bathtub also?
That is a good idea. I am sure it would work
I wonder if polycro would be strong enough to do this? I have spare of that after making a groundsheet, but no spare tarp.
No harm in trying. Not a bad idea to give it a practice run and see how much you can get out of it. The one I made is over 2 years old now and still going strong! I just returned from an 8 day canoe trip and I was using it the whole week. One of the chair legs finally pushed through a corner on the trip. I slapped on a piece of duct tape and it got me through the trip without fail after that.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods if not I have a 'bag for life' heavy duty bag I can use,a bit like a IKEA bag, not sure it's the right size though. I'll have to wait til the chair arrives to check actual footprint.
👍 Great.. Will it work on sand? More than a few times I mean 🙈
Sand and snow. Mine is still going strong
Did you ever take this apart and get the Measurements to share?
I can't recall if I put in measurements or not. I don't think I did, because I just trace the outline of the footprint directly from the chair onto the tarp. This DIY project is awesome. Makes a huge difference. Mine is still going strong
Also makes a great place to put your bourbon so it's not in the dirt.
100%
I’m thinking I might try to make one, but instead of removing the small squares from the corners, just cut one side and sew it.
Do you think it would still need the tape around the rim to be sturdy enough to hold the legs? If so, maybe double the width of the fabric rim and fold it over to beef that up?
The next one I make I will doing a bit different. More along the lines of what you just suggested. With a lighter material....
I wanted to see if the idea would even work at all. So I didn't put too much effort into it. Now I know it works...better than I anticipated. Time to get crafty and make it as good and as light as I possibly can! I'm excited about it!
Good luck on your build! I am looking forward to hearing about what you come up with. Feel free to send pictures to my email.
Thanks for watching Jon. Have a great weekend
Thanks for your thoughts. I definitely wouldn’t have come up with your idea, but watching you make it got me thinking.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods - Its been 8 months since you came up with this great idea! Just checking in to see if you have made any changes to the design, before I get involved in this project! Thanks for the diy hack!
@@scubahiker Still going strong! Used it last weekend! I have plans to make a lighter version.....but this one just wont quit. And it has been used a lot since I made it. It is a worthwhile project.
You could mass produce these and sell them.
Much appreciated. Much cheaper to do it yourself
nice one! but there was a bit of a cost though :) the cost of that thing you cut up to make it!
That was a scrap piece of tarp from a past project. Instead of going to a landfill, it is now used on every trip
there is a slight cost in tape. And time factored in to make it lol
@@ItsGoodintheWoods either way, i like it!
@@d0minar Thank you! It's still going strong! A worthwhile project for sure.
How did you get free gorilla tape and tarps?
The tape we already had at home. The tarp was a drop from a previous project.
I think you could just fold up each of the corners instead of making a full bath tub.
That would work. But I am not sure the groundsheet would roll up and grab itself if I made it that way. I think an experiment is in order......I plan to make some out of lighter material. I will make one the way you suggested.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods You could add some velcro maybe for keeping it rolled? I've found dual lock velcro quite nice for a lot of things, it's stronger and both sides are hard plastic instead of the regular hairy stuff that does not like dirt, lint and moisture.
$35 for the helinox ground sheet is pretty cheap haha. Let’s assume people don’t have scrap pieces of tarp laying around because they fucking don’t….sooooooo…..You’re going to spend at least $20 on a 6x8 tarp and then you’re going to ruin it by cutting it and then you’re relying on duct tape to hold it together which won’t fucking last at all so you’ll have to remake or retape all the time. Duct tape gets ruined by moisture and sun exposure. Then you’re adding stress to the tape by sitting on it. Suck it up and spend $30-$35 haha. “Dur I’m someone who thinks they are smart but actually super dumb”. The helinox ground sheet comes with a 5 year warranty too. An extra $10 or so to get a quality, sturdy, and 5 year warrantied product is a fucking no brainer. Skip 1 meal if $10 is sooooo hard to come by for you dude haha.
5 months in, works awesome! Thanks for the comment
You have $35 to throw away on something that actually costs a fraction of that at Decathlon (I bet the one for their chair would happily fir the Helinox) and even cheaper if you make it yourself?
Cool story bro.
@@harduphiker say you’re broke without saying you’re broke hahahaha Jesus Christ bro.
@@AntwonDaBusiness it's actually in my name? Or did you miss the fact my channel and name is called 'Hard Up Hiker (Broke Backpacker)'?
No shame here in being poor. Working class and proud. Whereas I smell toxic privilege in your comments....
And no, I can't afford a Helinox, I am using this on a much cheaper and heavier version, cos I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a chair.
Genius!
I agree Ben ! I told him he was on to something ! Collaboration ????Lol !
