    The only thing I’m kinda disappointed that you didn’t mention about the Shrek, is that the world of Shrek for every film became increasingly stylized and leaned further into a fantasy style world as the series went on. While in my own opinion, the first 3 shrek movies start out in an absurdist fairytail parody, I think it was a better choice to move onto a more serious-ish fantasy
    I know you said you haven’t watched Puss in Boots the Last Wish, but it does even better worldbuilding than Shrek 4 and Puss in Boots 1

    • @HydraSpectre1138

      Shrek, to me at least, feels like a balance between both a fairytale parody world and a serious heroic fantasy world (think D&D, particularly the Forgotten Realms). Even with the first two.
      And even with the parody aspect, the Shrek films work the best when they still have character development and drama even with the parody aspect and humour.

      Shrek has basically become the most memed and popular character in all of DreamWorks Animation and I'm sure the extensive style building with each film helped with that.

      The first two Shrek films knew what they wanted to be. In that they are a parody of Fairytale cliques and Disney. The third and fourth movie try to balance both being cynical and dark especially with the villains and three just didn’t work. The fourth film I will admit is not my favorite but at least it was balanced better than the third movie.

    Joseph the King of Dreams is actually a fairly good movie. Though I wouldn't call it a sequel it's more of a direct to video prequel since Joseph's story actually starts the events that would eventually be ended by Moses.

    For me, Kung Fu Panda 2 will always be my favorite. As a child, I liked it, but it wasn't even top 5. However, as an adult now, holy shit, the movie hits like my dad's belt used to. The villain is directly connected to Po instead of Shifu or Oogway and in a terrifying way. Bringing genocide among the species out of a fear of them being the reason for Shen's own unbecoming. The menace Shen carries in the way he talks, the way he moves, it's cold blooded and ruthless. Po's arc is one of the best in animation history. A topic most movies refuse to get anywhere close to and KFP2 runs with it gloriously. Overcoming trauma and learning to accept your past and use it to better your future instead of constantly running away from it. You can't hide everything, you have to let your emotions flow. Everything this movie does it hits head on. Absolutely phenomenal in every way. I know most still prefer the first, but for me, the second will always be better.
    On another note, how the hell did KFP2 get passed off by people as "just another kids film" ? I just find that absolutely insane. It literally starts with the genocide of a species and we see murder multiple times throughout the film. Hell, there's even a really unnerving scene that may be sexual harassment related with Shen whispering into Tigress's ear in a sultry way that the 5 would all be part of something beautiful. This movie is fucking dark as hell.

      @insulttothehumanrace3807 Před 6 měsíci +8

      Probably because, like many animated films, it was marketed as a kids' movie, with emphasis on the fun bits. (the first How to Train Your Dragon got the same treatment: rather good coming-of-age story, advertised as a wacky adventure)
      And to be a bit fair, the movie does have plenty of comedic bits too, though they rarely fall flat or clash with the tone of their respective scenes.
      But yeah, Kung Fu Panda 2 is definitely one of Dreamworks' best.

    Honestly, I think Pitch Black would've been more interesting if he were... just that... just darkness.
    I get wanting to characterise him, but I think if he were stylised in shadows and silhouettes, it'd give him a unique sort of eldritch and shapeless quality that really fits the nature of fear. They could've still done everything they did with him, but had it far more stylised and interesting.

    As a kid, I ended up randomly hyperfixating on two Dreamworks films for about half a year to a year - Monsters VS Aliens and Megamind - and regarding MvA... yeahhh it doesn't hold up the *best*, but I still have a soft spot for it, and I personally feel that Susan is one of the better female protagonists that I've seen in an animated film. I also had a bit of a kid crush on Dr. Cockroach (I may still have a plush of him, not 100% sure)

    • @alexgomez6723
      @alexgomez6723 Před 6 měsíci +2

      MvA DOES NOT deserve the flack it often gets. No, it isnt a masterpiece, no, it’s not DreamWork’s best outing by far, yes it has its shortcomings, but Susan is one of the few human protagonists to come from a major animated film and BEHAVES like it. Male or female. She’s the Basic Becky who walks by in a Starbucks, sat two rows down from you in high school, shops at JC Penny, and just wants a normal uneventful married life in the suburbs. So IMAGINE this person has a meteorite fall on them, becomes a gigantic monstrosity, gets taken into a facility with other freaks of a nature, and has no hope again to live the life she wanted. No imagine AGAIN suddenly aliens actually exists and are about to invade Earth, and you’re out in the crossfire, again, how do you think a normal person would react to this unending rabbit hole of topsy turvy? YOU RUN! Susan is not some larger life heroine, she’s a rightfully confused and terrified young woman in a bizarre situation that just keeps escalating. Overs the course, she learns to accept her new role and fate, and becomes the defender Earth needs. Enter is full of shit, let me again stress that MvA is NOT an S tier cinematic masterpiece devoid of blemishes , but putting it next to flipping SHARK TALE of all things (a film I shamefully also admit to having a soft spot for, but I’m not going to pretend is much worth to defend) is lunacy. His gripes are just the typical mold of MvA’s usual detractors, just a sorted spew of opinionated takes that don’t really reflect the actual quality of the film, you could certainly say this movie doesn’t have the most well thought out and structured jokes, which would totally be fair, but just saying “muh not funny” is meaningless. Maybe I’m bias because I grew up with retro cheesy sci-fi/creature features, which this film pays homage to and I appreciated the references, that’s fine. You know what, I actually LIKE this movie more than Megamind and HTTYD, that’s right, I SAID IT, gut me angry internet nerds. I can perfectly acknowledge that Megamind and HTTYD are probably much superior and better structured overall, and I understand why people love them as much as they do, but they didn’t really do it for me personally. I know I’m probably not choosing a wise hill to die on, but fuck it, it’s how I feel, I’m okay with being wrong, I’ve been wrong about worse.

    Before even starting this, I really do hope that at the very least, you agree that "Shrek 2" is some top tier material. It does what a sequel should do, has some great music, expands on the universe even more, and it's just a solid good time with pop culture references that still stand well to this day. 👀
    "Prince of Egypt" is such a great movie too. Even people who aren't particularly religious seem to love it's presentation and story, like, if all Bible stories were given this treatment, I think we could have had a niche genre of films that would be great for sharing the religion without being cringe or too preachy.

    8:07 in monsters vs aliens I did not understand the point of that scene. Until I watched a doctor on Steven Spielberg and they showed a clip of Close Encounters of the strange kind where they communicate through music. Then it clicked, this scene was a reference/parody of close encounters. I think it was a bad idea to parody films most people know nothing about😂

    • @insulttothehumanrace3807
      @insulttothehumanrace3807 Před 6 měsíci +3

      Or at least to have the parody/reference take up so much screentime. If you're going to reference something your target audience is unlikely to know about (Close Encounters of the Third Kind was actually a fairly popular movie, but the chances of kids knowing about a 1977 film are pretty slim), just have it be a quick quip or visual gag, not a whole scene like that reference was.
      A better done reference to that movie is in UHF, where George Newman makes a mound out of mashed potatoes and says "this means something, this is important", which is a direct reference to Close Encounters, but: 1. UHF was made about 12 years after CE, so it's much more likely viewers will get it; 2, the reference is made by someone who is established to daydream about movies, so it can be passed off as just his eccentricity; and 3. the reference only lasts 6 or 7 seconds, not a whole scene.

    Spirit was like the trilogy of films i watched religiously as a kid. The other two being The Lion King nad Shrek 2. For a fair bit of time i forgot about this movie all the way up until my first year of high school when i was searching for a movie to watch i saw Spirit on the tv and immediately all the memories of me watching it came back. I watched it immediately and loved it all over again.
    A couple of weeks later my mother saw it on recently watched and decided to watch it. My little brother was there with her when i walked in around the 15 minute mark and she told me how i'd watch it every day. I decided to stay and watch the movie again with her.
    I adore Spirit still. Its definitely not in the top 5 or even 10 maybe for some, but it really left an impression on me, and i love the memories it gave me.

      Part of the conflict started because Poppy threw a very loud party with fireworks alerting the Bergen,Chef, and she kidnapped a good chunk of her friends. And for the record, it being a Close Encounters reference makes it a little worse, since it's such a long bit to refer to a movie no child is likely to know (unless either of you know kids who would get references to movies from the 70's) and doesn't really make much sense in the movie itself.

      MvA DOES NOT deserve the flack it often gets. No, it isnt a masterpiece, no, it’s not DreamWork’s best outing by far, yes it has its shortcomings, but Susan is one of the few human protagonists to come from a major animated film and BEHAVED like it. Enter is full is full of shit, let me again stress that MvA is NOT an S tier cinematic masterpiece devoid of blemishes , but putting it next to flipping SHARK TALE of all things (a film I shamefully also admit to having a soft spot for, but I’m not going to pretend is much worth to defend) is lunacy.
