- There are a few firsts for this particular video. It’s the first cover of 2023, the first cover to be a song from the album With The Beatles, and the first video to be a cover of a song that The Beatles did not write. “You Really Got A Hold on Me” was written by Smokey Robinson in 1962 for his group The Miracles. Released on the Tamla label (the label used by the great Motown Records for R&B artists), the song was a top ten hit in 1962 and went on to become one The Miracle’s most covered songs. The song received a 1998 Grammy Hall of Fame award, and is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. A spectacular song!
Being big fans of American R&B music, especially Motown, The Beatles included their cover of “You Really Got A Hold on Me” on their second British album With The Beatles, and also on their US album The Beatles’ Second Album. The song was recorded on July 18, 1963, the same time their album Please Please Me was still number one on the album charts, and busy with touring and BBC radio and television performances. The song was recorded in seven takes, four complete, and later recorded four edit takes. The final master is an edit of takes 7, 10, and 11.
As tributes to Smokey Robinson, George Harrison wrote the songs “Ooh Baby (You Know That I Love You)” from his 1975 album Extra Texture and “Pure Smokey”, released on his 1976 album Thirty Three & ⅓. Both great songs.
The song is a rather simple song. A nice 6/8 groove, or 12/8 depending how you count it, with John Lennon and George Harrison singing dual lead vocals. Paul provides the song’s melodic bass line and Ringo provides the steady groove. The fills in this song are heard in the song’s refrain at 1:42 and 1:47, providing nice transitions into the final verse. At 2:39, the song’s outro begins with the title line repeated two times, and ends at 2:52 with four sets of triplets starting on the snare drum, moving to the rack tom, and finishing on the floor tom. It all comes to an end with a cymbal hit. And I can’t forget George Martin’s wonderful piano playing. The fill at 1:47 I had to insert in because in the original take I played what I initially thought was the right fill, but upon playback and check with the original track, I was playing the wrong fill. So I inserted the correct fill which is why you see a quick cut in the video
I used to not be a fan of this song, but it has gone on to become one of my favorites from the album. I like the way John and George’s vocals blend in with each other. I wish there were more songs that both John and George sang lead together, but that’s just how it is. I think George’s ability as a lead vocalist was underestimated while in The Beatles. He might not have been the best vocalist, but he had a great voice that would fit any song that he sang.

Absolutely! It is an art that is slowly fading away. Thanks for commenting!
The hihat is open to the exact point and you play it with the precise swing.

Oh cool you're doing some of their older stuff now :)
Yes! I do not have many early songs on the channel so I guess I need to start covering some of their earlier stuff. Thanks for commenting!
Nice
Thank you kindly!
That kit is really pretty, oh also good job on the cover
Thank you very much! I love this kit very much!
you’ve really got a hold on this!
Let me say that it would be interesting in the future to see you play Long long long and Dear Prudence.
Thank you very much! I try. I’ve never done a a white album song on the channel which is strange since it is my favorite album. I’ll have to do one sometime. Thanks for commenting!
Could you start doing lessons/tutorials
Such a good job!
Thank you very much! I could start doing those types of videos when I get the chance.
can i use this for my videos? your drumming is amazing!
Thank you very much! You can use it!
@@davidmontis7259 yay!!!!
The snare sounds great here. I've noticed you are experimenting on different types of heads?
Thank you very much! The snare head in this video is just the factory see head that came on the snare drum when I got it. I used to use a Remo Diplomat Fiberskyn head on the snare but it broke and I never got around to replacing it.
Finally!!!!!!!!!
I remember you requested this song so here you go! Thanks for commenting and your suggestion!
@@davidmontis7259 thanks!

I should do some more songs from Help. Some great drumming moments on that album and that is one of them. I’ll add it to my list. Not sure when I’ll get to it, but I’ll plan to do that tune some point.
@@davidmontis7259 do it when it pleases you I wouldn't mind the wait, you covers are amazing, keep up the good work
I really liked this drum cover, Can you please please please please do strawberry fields forever??!🙏🙏🥺
Thank you kindly! I’ll be doing all of the Magical Mystery Tour album sometime this month. So that cover will be up very soon. Stay tuned. That song will be one of the first songs I work on.
Thank you so much for replying to my comment.
It's all too much drum cover please?
I do plan on covering that song sometime. Really hard to hear everything that is going on in that track and it is rather long so it will take a while. But eventually, it will get done. Thanks for commenting!
Awesome!
Thank you very much!
I d like you to perform Dig a pony. Good challenge. I find it difficult to keep tempo right. I tend to speed up unconsciously
@@didibuffalin5625 I’ll add that one to my list. It’s a great performance
