Great review. Really impressed with the structure of your test results. I ended up picking up two rt-470s. you mentioned you had RT-40 used during the RX portion of the test. Would love to see a similar review of the 490, if you get time.

I have the radios and got some interesting power readings. It's a fairly large device and the buzzing I was getting in the background went away when I disconnected the USB-C cable. So don't use it while connected to a power supply.
The radio is fine for walkie-talkie use, and the FCC isn't going to do anything to you if you use them in the woods or for recreational use. Unfortunately, very few people even use ham radio frequencies any more. Also, the Radtel RT-470 is very powerful. In fact, it's the most powerful handheld radio I've ever used.
The power readings I got using my Surecom SW-102 and SW-33 SWR meters returned almost identical readings on both meters:
    Frequency HIGH MED LOW
    ----------------------
    140.000 13.75W 7.36W 5.75W
    142.725 13.30W 8.71W 3.69W
    143.500 13.55W 8.67W 3.89W
    144.000 13.61W 7.40W 5.92W
    146.355 14.45W 7.31W 3.54W
    440.525 10.93W 5.03W 1.86W
    442.000 11.36W 5.17W 1.89W
    446.252 11.34W 5.24W 2.00W
I used a 50W dummy load and all three radios, so using your radios on the MEDIUM setting is how I would use them.
For those who may consider buying the Radtel, it's a fine radio. That said, if you're looking for a good radio, I have no problem recommending the RT-470, but my number one recommendation would have to be the TYT TH-UV8000d/e. It's not only a 10W radio, it has a built-in cross band repeater.
Either radio, or both, will serve you well.

I did keyboard program a few freqs just to confirm it works exactly the same as my RT-490 (and other similar radios). i can do a short video to show how, just didn't this time. Basically, you use VFO mode to call the desired freq. Next use the Menu and choose the option to add a PL code if needed. Then choose option to save to memory. Any channels already in use will look like "CH-001" etc., scroll down to see one that looks like "001" etc, without "CH--..." means channel is blank and you can press menu to add.

    • @hbillsmith
      @hbillsmith  Před rokem

I would say it's very good. You need to make sure you have a good antenna, the one it ships with was good for me but from past experiences I note antenna quality can be off and it is possible to get a less than optimum antenna. If you can, put an SWR meter and see if your SWR is somewhere between 1.1 and 2.1. I got the best walking performance from a Nagoya 771 and just for fun, I used an adapter and connected to a mag mount that was tuned for GMRS. This 470 is really performing well for me. I also have an RT490 where I've seen others report sensitivity issues. I reached out to my contact at Radtels about some of those reports and he said the initial shipping RT490 was hardware version 1.03 whereas the current shipping RT490 is version 2.0 of the hardware. Since the RT470 is a newer model, I suspect that it benefited from some of the hardware improvements also.

Gee Bill, it's too bad you didn't show what it looked like on a tinySA, because when I checked mine I saw only 3 watts on frequency and the first harmonic at 1 watt on VHF. It's another ccr splaterbox. On the up side 1.25 meters 220 band was much better 6+ watts at 223.5. IMHO that's worth the price. Just FYI.

The "All Band CPS" is downloadable from the Radtel website. On the download page it is #28 "Radtel RT-470 English Programming Software" which will download a "Radtel_RT-470_Programming SW.rar". RAR files are a form of compressed folder (like a ".zip" file). Here is the link
      cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/8855/8800/files/Radtel_Rt-470_Programming_SW.rar?v=1663203871
Windows 11 natively supports RAR files but if your system doesn't, just open the Microsoft Store that's part of windows and search for "RAR" and then select "Unarchiver One RAR & ZIP File Manager". This free 4.7 star application from Trend Micro will install and add RAR viewing and extracting to your version of Windows.
After the install, when you click on your downloaded Radtel file "Radtel_RT-470_Programming SW.rar" it will open the RAR and you'll see that the RAR includes a single file name "setup.exe" (not very original I agree). But it installs just fine and when complete you'll have a new program called AllBand.exe.
If you are not comfortable installing a setup.exe directly from the RAR, just have the RAR app extract the file "setup.exe" to your desktop or a folder. Next have your system virus scanner examine the file for you. I did that and after the scan I renamed the setup to "RT470 All Band Installer.exe".
As of this writing today, I'm reaching out to my contact at Radtel (Kevin Xie) and requesting that he repackage the setup and post it as "RT-470 CPS Setup.ZIP" that will make it easier for everyone. Let me know if you have any problems.

Absolutely not true. For every radio I review, I use basically the same frequency set that includes several repeaters within range of my home. Some I connect VHF and some UHF. The UHF ones are 70cm and just below GMRS bands. I don't understand why someone would make such a misguided statment.

FCC part 15 applies to all transmitters. It's the part that regulates spurious emissions and all transmitters are required to comply with part 15 to be accepted in the US. Part 95 is for gmrs/frs and a few other non amateur radio services. There was a rule change a few years ago to allow frs to transmit at up to 2 watts (if enough people do something outside of existing rules long enough and it's not harmful, they change the rules to match what people are doing). Part 97 is the part that applies to amateur radio.
