- We're obviously fans of @simplehuman, so we had to tear one down. This week we’re joined by Jingwen Zhu an Electrical Design Engineer at Tomorrow Lab (tomorrow-lab.com) who is an owner of a simplehuman mirror and recommended we tear one down. So we found one of these $200 smart mirrors on eBay for much less than $200 and ordered one, so we can destroy it. For you. Well, and us.
In this teardown, we look at the design for manufacture, repairability, the IR sensor, and discuss some of the downsides of it being an IR sensor. Then as always, we riff on what it could be.
A teardown should show the actual process of tearing it down so we know how it was disassembled/assembled.
No tear down, let’s face it we are here because we are trying to fix ours. We don’t need to know how it works, just how to not turn it into a brick.
Thanks so much for information. I wondered why my mirror had lost it’s brightness. Thought I was going to have to buy a new one as I use it every day. Had no idea about the brightness indicator on the back of the mirror. I obviously touched in in error at some point. Re adjusted it and brightness is back where it should be. Delighted, thanks again..
You guys skipped over the one thing that I wanted to see. How does the bottom base come off?
Me too. I have an older model BT1080 and can't figure out how to take off the base to replace the battery instead of buying a new mirror for $200. I guess I will have to write to the company.
@@virginiaomalley Sorry for this very late reply. I believe we found screw access hidden under the rubber foot. Hiding screws under feet or rubber bases is very common on most table-top products as the rubber makes a nice press-fit into the screw bosses and/or is easy to adhere with double-sided adhesive.
i can no longer position my mirror. it does not stay in the position I leave it. Would think its a simply thing to tighten the area where the mirror meets the stand but no obvious screws. I contacted SH but they say its not user fixable. But, i figure you guys may have some ideas.
@@davidmiller7637 I have the same issue with my mirror. Hopefully they will see this comment and get back to us!
Very informative. I would get for my wife except am hesitate due to all the negative reviews.
mounting the aluminum pcbs as through hole is clever!
Is there a way to replace the plastic that covers the battery mine cracked so the screws separated from the base
Hi! How did you removed mirror? I would like change to mirror without magnification and I don't want to break it. Thanks!
Hey great video. Would you happen to have the item # for the charge port? I have a Cellular Repair Business and have one of these mirrors to fix.
Thanks! Looks like its just a micro USB cable. But here is an official link to purchase a new one: www.simplehuman.com/gp-bt1080
Thank you
Where I can order the round board. Mine is not working anymore 😢
Is there an expected life span for this mirror? My mirror no longer lights up. Any ideas?
The mirror fell and the shaft broke off the base. There is a clear circular part that holds them together. It broke. Any idea where I can get that piece? Model is ST3052
Mine fell an the clear piece Also broke the screws connected to the mirror side an the base plastic cracked so they are out of the screw holes. Any luck I messaged the company no response yet what did you do I've had mine 14 years I'm so hurt
Where do I get the just the mirror piece ?I also broke mines and I would like to find it and repair it myself

Hi! Did you find it? I would like replace mirror piece to regular (without magnification). Can you provide some photos for me how it looks like "under the hood"?
Our mirror popped out becaus of an airbag looking thing behind the mirror. Ours is the travel 5" titanium one. Any idea what the airbag thing is for?
Sometimes the battery breaks down and reacts with the plastic that encases it?
200 dollars is expensive especially in these covid19 times.
That was a waste of time. “We broke it.” No sheet! Show how to disassemble it so WE don’t brake it.
Why fast forward through thte actual tear down? What the h*ll? Show us the process. Don’t tell us about it afterwards.
