I agree with Zach! The musical wants us to root for Evan so bad. But we can’t because what he is doing it’s awful. It would be best if the musical didn’t try so hard for us to root for Evan.
I went in knowing nothing but that people thought it was inspirational, and I thought it was iconic for the gays (I'm also gay) - but I had such hard cringe the entire time. I thought Evan was awful. It's hard for me to understand how so many find it uplifting! So speak for us all Zach!

Movie vs the musical: musical includes songs that do guilt Evan and show how the stuff he was doing was messed up. Movie took ALL of those out so the audience can sympathize with Evan (which is kind of completely forced in this instance)

Many people say “theatre shows never work well on screen” WRONG! The problem is they keep hiring directos who know nothing about musical theatre. Lin Manuel Miranda breathes theatre and knows what makes theater unique and knew exactly how to translate that on screen with tick tick boom. Same with the director of mamma Mia and hairspray.
But the director of dear Evan Hansen had no clue of musical theatre and it’s so obvious. Holywood stop hiring directos for musicals that know nothing about the magic of theatre.
Stephen Spielberg and West Side Story would like a word.
It makes me genuinely sad, because Stephen Chbosky wrote and directed perks of being a wallflower, and that book and movie meant so much to a struggling teenage me 😭

@@nicoleb581 Agreed 100%, but he had no experience directing a musical before, particularly one as heavily choreographed as WSS. But I'll say he's an exception to the rule and that stage-to-screen musicals should be handled by people with previous experience. Here's a good example of someone that can do both masterfully, Sam Mendes. He has done productions of Assassins, Cabaret, Oliver! and Gypsy, while also making American Beauty, two James Bond films and 1917.
My answer for people who say "theater shows never work well on screen" is one word: Chicago. In fact, I think Chicago the movie is BETTER than the show!

Sadly, Ben's father bankrolled this movie and basically did so on the condition that his son play the lead. Less concerned with creating a faithful and moving adaptation, more with vanity. Unlike Lin Manuel who intentionally asked NOT to be cast as the lead role in In the Heights movie despite also originating it. Much as I would have LOVED to see LMM as Usnavi, I respect that he has aged out of the role AND I love that he wanted to give another actor a chance to shine. **glares at Ben Platt**
In the musical, their first kiss does happen during the role play brother song and it was the smartest decision to cut it

I KNEW A GIRL WHO DID THIS!! She went on two dates with a friend of mine, met his Dad, then treated him horribly and ghosted him. He died a few months later and she made up this whole thing about them being engaged, got flown across the US by his family and brought his ashes home with her. It was the worst thing I've ever seen anyone do!!!

I’m glad that kelsey loved this movie. personally, as a fan of DEH and movie musicals in general, I was incredibly disappointed with it. ben platt was the wrong choice, the editing was all over the place, they cut out the big comeuppance song “good for you” for no damn reason, and the overall message of the show was lost in favor of terrifying close ups of ben platt and his awful jerry curls.

Kelsey needs to check her LA privilege on this one. If you go to a premiere showing with the guy who made the movie and a bunch of the actors from the movie, your perspective is going to be *heavily* colored. She walked out of there with the rosy-est of glasses on and never took them off. I'm sure that entire room pretended the movie was amazing when the director and Amy Adams were RIGHT THERE.
I think she kind of acknowledges that the atmosphere she saw then on her personal experience played a lot into her perspective. Kelsey talks about how everyone at the screening was a current/ former theater kid.

really happy i was able to watch this movie for free at my colleges screening of it so i could experience a full theater audibly roast this movie. definitely wouldnt have finished it without that
Miles mentioning The Last Five Years gave me life, ALTHOUGH the movie is criminally underrated and Jeremy Jordan carried that whole production on his back ✨💕
DEH always feels like a satire to me how Evan and others exploited Conor's death (it doesn't matter what his true intention was) How Conor had no support system and people only paid attention to him after he is dead. The end of act one always feels more chilling than inspiring because it is a giant lie on both sides. I was surprised and terrified when I found out the majority of the audience find this play uplifting and genuine.

what kinda sucks is that in the musical no one really knows who Conner is because no matter what his family always saw him as a bad guy so even if one day he show he wasn't actually a bad person just someone who was struggling no one would believe him and he would just continue to struggle and i think he knew that so when he has the last interaction with Evan i think that was his last well maybe i could change and they believe moments
I was very disappointed with how they trimmed the perspectives of the parents. I felt that the stage production really showed nuance in the parents' relationships with their kids that made any parent relate to them and the difficulty in connecting with a teenager. But the movie really minimized that which made me sad when I watched this with friends who have not seen the stage performance.
Agree with Zach and Miles sm except for the Connor part. He was making their lives miserable but while he was obviously drowning and crying out for help, they weren’t ever doing anything to support him either. Idk if anyone read the book, specifically just Connor’s parts. We get to see the real Connor and his perspective/more elaboration on the things other characters said about him during the musical. It really showcases Connor’s mental place and further solidifies the notion that the musical should’ve always been about Connor/the murphy family. Connor was severely depressed, and having a family who consistently dismissed that/refused to get him actual therapy didn’t help (again speaking purely from the book/stage musical perspective). Ex: Cynthia says that when Connor tried to take his life the first time, Larry dismissed it and said he was being dramatic.
it's so obvious that this story was written in the early 2010s based on how they view the internet. even if we ignore how overdone the "going viral" trope is, why did everyone believe that these two high schoolers were only communicating via EMAIL?? like the only logical explanation would be if they were gay and in a secret relationship
There’s no way anyone else could have played a depressive, manipulative high school boy except Ben Platt, because Evan is deeply complex
i 100% agree about jordan fisher!! a lot of people said andrew barth feldman should have been cast (he played evan on broadway when he was 16 and is currently around 20/21, so he would have been the perfect age) and while he's crazy talented, he lacks the mainstream appeal needed for the movie. most people who know who that is would already be seeing the movie bc they're theatre fans. jordan fisher has mainstream appeal (specifically with a teen audience after to all the boys 2 and work it), is insanely talented, and played the role on broadway (plus would be someone hot since kelsey said she was missing that 😂)

Kelsey, I really wanted the movie to be good, too. And it just ... wasn't. (Even though Kaitlyn Dever is a legend and Danny Pino is foxy and Ben Platt's voice is absolutely golden.) DEH suffers from a bit of Greatest Showman syndrome: the music is so good that it makes you forget that the story is NOT.

i was TUNED. IN. for this episode!!! i was obsessed w DEH in high school - saw the OBC live, listened to the soundtrack constantly in the car, etc. - bc i desperately tried to separate the relatability of being a depressingly insecure teenager from the absurdly gross things evan did. in hindsight i share more of zach’s POV of the story and i think the musical received a lot more celebration than it probably deserved. it also opened the door for pasek & paul to do the greatest showman which…oof.
i refused to watch the movie bc of ben platt’s nepotism but i still got such a kick out of this episode. would’ve loved to hear garrick’s takes - as much as i was already laughing, he probably would’ve elevated it. i hope he shares his thoughts when he’s back!

I think the biggest problem is some things you covered. Ben Platt is performing to the back of the room - as you do on stage- but this is a film and they are filming it traditionally... it just doesn't fit and we get scary awkward close ups with extreme theatre faces.

I watched this movie with my old high-school theatre teacher and fellow theatre alumni. We have been out of high-school for over 10 years. The high-school theatre star that was supposed to be the one to make it out of our small town killed himself a couple of months before this movie came out. He was the sweetest and needless to say we were a wreeeeck watching this.
no one else could’ve done the role is a hot take when jordan fischer looks pretty young and played the role and one of the other evan hansen’s isn’t even 20 yet i don’t think 😭
I totally agree with what Zach was saying about glorifying the dead but I think they missed that Connors dad died. He was a traumatized child. They act out. Also everyone does shitty things as a teenager. And he’s now an addict bc he doesn’t know what to do with his feelings of grief. Just some perspective for Connor. Not saying what he did was okay but we should have more empathy for him.
Evan isn’t a redeemable character (at least not in the time given to explore his character in the movie/show) but they cut good for you which is SO IMPORTANT to show that. That song is so necessary to show that his actions are wrong.

39:25 Just clearing up misinformation: That actor (Colton Ryan who plays Connor in the movie) is NOT the new Evan on Broadway. Zach is right, he was the Evan understudy (and the Connor and Jared understudy too). Til Feburary Jordan Fisher was Broadways Evan (with Zachary Noah Piser as alternate). The current Evan is Ben Levi Ross, who understudied Evan, Connor and Jared on Broadway and was Evan in the Tour Production for a while. Zachary Piser will overtake for Ben Levi Ross on the May 17 :)

Ben Platt was like 23 when he stopped playing the character on Broadway. So he was in a reasonable age range for that. Plus, they had to all be adults on Broadway and everything is from afar. It's different for stage. They let him do it for the movie because he won a Tony. I think it was a big mistake.
I love the musical. That being said. In the original shows the ONLY “suicide mentions” are Connor Murphy. And Evan letting go of the tree. That’s it.
In the movie, they completely add it into a bunch of different other places. Which I understand. But they used shock factor, making me have a panic attack for legitimately at least half the movie in the movie theatre.
I’ve never seen this and now probably won’t, but was still thoroughly entertained by this podcast. Zach and Miles together is always a good time. I wish Miles was on more. He adds so much fun to the mix. This podcast is already entertaining as hell. The way Miles makes Zach giggle is everything. The usual trio plus Miles is BPE, big podcast energy. Miss you, Garrick!

I cant watch it just based on how Ben Platt looks alone. Don't get me wrong a adore Ben Platt...but he could've been put on as a producer and found a guy good enough to play Evan... that still could've gotten the film made.
i agree with Kelsey 100%. as someone who suffers from addiction and major depressive disorder, i saw this musical in theatre and bawled. my entire life changed and as much as the movie isn't the musical, i stand by her being so incredibly defensive. i get the movie doesn't hit the same, but when you see the real, full show in person? oh man. you'll never be the same.

I don’t really feel like you can justify every bad action with mental illness though i agree every person is way more nuanced than just good or bad and that has to be taken into account
I recommend Zach listen to the eulogy song from chasers war on everything to make up for the disappointing reality as opposed to the fantastic sounding idea of what Zach thought the stage performance was going to back. It’s a song about exactly how we just pretend people weren’t terrible just because they died.

This movie is GUILLLLLLLTY, and the music isn’t good enough to save it. Ben Platt looks like a 45-year-old accountant instead of a teenager, Kaitlyn Deever is the most believable actor, and it drags entirely too long.

I think the main reason they use 30 yr olds in high school shows is because of the limitations in working with child actors (short days on set, tutor requirements, different liabilities,etc) and also because its less awkward to work with adults acting out mature themes than children. In Ben Platt's case, wasn't a family member of his a producer on the show? I also feel like hardcore DEH musical fans would have rioted if they didn't have Ben, but lordddd there were horrible hair and makeup choices made!
It was his dad producing it, and Ben Platt literally said that if his dad didn't produce it the movie wouldn't have gotten made so actually a Ben Platt vanity project
