I've been collecting 1/6 scaled for 18 years and to be honest so many people get burned out or leave the hobby bitter and from my observation is because they collect without much principle, rather than be proactive, we become reactive to the hobby. "Avengers 8? I'll get all the characters etc!" Personally for me, I collect characters that really aspire me (hence the dumb channel name, The Virtuous Collector) so I don't get the temptation of getting characters that are superficially cool but aren't but have little in terms of meaning. It's easy to get carried away and to place your happiness at the mercy of toy companies thus you need to set your values early on before it's too late.

This is what I am doing for my model kits, now that I am also collecting figures. Since figures are way easier to just take out and snap pictures of. I’ve been going through my model kits and asking myself if I do really want to put the time in to build it.

When you find yourself anxious about collecting is a great sign to stop and take a break. Also, more is not better, less is best. I been waiting for 1989 keaton and batmobile forever, but now that I pre ordered them I feel great because is what a part of my collection plan. Also, don't display all the figures all at once. Rotate them and your collection will always feel fresh. Collect what you love and not what someone tell you to collect. I only have like 20 figures and I absolutely love them. Nothing in my collection is going anywhere ever. These are my rules but then again everyone is different. Great content and advice and love your channel too.

We as collectors, need to know what is really wanted and not really necessary.
Sell the lease liked figure/s to buy that one you really love to have. That way, you can have the haves, not the just haves.

Great tips. I got burned out with collecting a few years back with Saint Seiya Myth Cloths. I started with my favourite character, then the character that represents my zodiac sign and before I knew it I had over 50 characters and by the end it was just a joyless obsession. And that was not even the only thing I collected. Anyway I finally sold a bunch of them off and it felt great. I have a few of them left which will also be sold. When you lose your passion for it, it’s just time to let go. Even now, I’m still selling stuff. The rest I put in storage so my collection can breathe and rotate my figures when I’m tired of the ones I have exposed. It keeps the collection interesting that way without buying new stuff all the time. Also, I don’t do preorders anymore. Preordering a figure doesn’t guarantee you’ll still want it when it’s finally out so I only buy what I want when it’s actually available and the price is reasonable of course. This hobby needs to be fun, not a chore and sometimes it’s hard striking a balance.

Excellent vid brother! Coincidentally I played it as I began sorting through my 2 car garage, half of which is filled with boxed toys (1/6 scale figs, Star Wars 3&3/4, 1/18 scale diecast cars, etc). I was sorting out stuff to put on ebay and came to the conclusion that I need to sell more than I initially intended to sell. Your vids are unique, insightful, and far more useful than 95% of other hobby youtube pages available.

Good advice 👍🏻 especially for everyone new to the hobby. I mean, I only own a 1/3 statue and a 1/6 diorama from Prime 1 Studio, plus 5 Hot Toys Figures, and the boxes are killing me already.
Sleeping over the decision of a purchase can also be helpful. If the spark of buying a certain figure is gone the next morning, you probably shouldn't buy that figure.

Yep. I heard this one from Justin from Justin’s Collection: give it a few weeks. If the figure you want is still on your mind then it means you really want it and should get it. If after a few days you no longer think about it, chances are it was never that interesting to begin with.

  • @SuperZoro_

Nice video, it’s important to ask yourself questions like: which one I wanna keep and which one to keep. I’ve been collecting for so long as well all sort of stuff and it’s unbearable to reach the « no place » moment. I’ve been at some point collecting just to have something when in reality I didn’t need at all. Now I have sold half my collection ! That is a huge chunk of it, more place, new pieces arrived, I’ve grown, I am interested in new pieces, some aren’t appealing to me anymore, basically it’s not a shame to get rid of a figure you don’t like anymore or to finance a one you want more. The only thing is indeed to not fall I to addiction. Addiction makes you lose focus and you are stressing over the hobby when a hobby is just a thing you enjoy on « free time » a hobby shouldn’t take all your life time and money. And I think it’s important to say « do not try to do like others » simple is best honestly, it’s fine to collect tiny figures, toys, 50$ figures. As long as you enjoy it and don’t bear with it 🙂

I ran out of display space about two years ago. And now I currently have 27 unopened figures sitting in a storage area in the basement! With more figures coming in the near future. I may be forced to sell some of my older figures, just to have space for the future releases.

One of my favorite horror movies, The Relic, takes place at a museum. Penelope Ann Miller's character says that at any given time only 2% of items in the museum are on display. That might work for museums, but is a total waste for private collectors.
I have too many of my legacy items in boxes, but I have been selling some off and after I move in the next couple months hopefully I can increase my display percentage.

Collecting 3.75 figures (tvc figures) has pros and cons and they have to do with what you said in this video.
PRO: they don’t take as much space as a hot toys for example.
CONS: it takes you more time to be obligated to be more organized and strategic with your collection (its a sure thing that is going to happen to any collector on the long term)
Nice video man, you earned a sub here.

Most collectors suffer FOMO. It's a bitch. I remind myself, with modern day collectables...there's tons made, everyone collecting most likely keeps them new. So 10 years from now, these figures WONT be as valuable as say 1980's toys. There will be too many brand new sitting around. Old vintage stuff, well it was used, opened, played with and many haven't survived. In the 80's we didn't have internet, cell phones, and even video games were still new and not very good. Toys are what we had. So they have what I call NATURAL RARITY. Modern toys don't. It's either manufactured or we fool ourselves. But make no mistake, the modern stuff you're buying today WILL NOT increase in value like you think it will.
Don't give into FOMO, don't go into debt over it. Collect cause you LOVE the line. Keep the lines you collect limited. You can't have everything, if you try, you'll spend your entire life chasing the dragon and not enjoying the collection you do have.

Very true. I don’t get people that collect as an investment. It’s an awful way to invest your money. As you say, most of it is mass-produced and won’t increase in value. It might work for limited editions but overall it’s an awful way to make extra money. This things need to breath, to be exposed in all their glory, it’s what they’re made for.

  • @darthchopper9016
    @darthchopper9016 Před 2 lety +1

Yeah lack of space sucks but you could put a vitrine with its side towards the wall instead of its backside. That way you can easily fit in an extra vitrine. You can also place some flying figures on wires from the ceiling.
What is helping me a lot is that many new marvel and Star Wars movies/series aren't that good, so I don't feel like buying most of the new figures from those lines. The best thing about The Eternals is how much money I'm saving by not buying any Eternals figures.

Star Wars has been my favorite franchise for years, and recently got hope back from The Mandalorian. Already got the chrome mando version in pre-order, but I have been stomped on Jango. He’s just, ugh so badass, but I’ve never had an attachment to him. To me, he’s a really badass bounty hunting mandalorian, and that only. Liked his father-like character to Boba though.
