On this special live episode of Street You Grew Up On, Kerry Washington visits her hometown in celebration of the release of her memoir, “Thicker Than Water.” This time, she is the one being interviewed, by the amazing activist, former season 1 SYGUO guest, and fellow Bronx native, Tarana Burke. Taking place at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club where she frequented growing up and just down the street from her childhood home. Kerry looks back on her fondest memories with her family, her life in the Bronx, and how it shaped the woman she is today.

I also went to Kips Bay on Randall, where I danced for Tito Puente as a child oh the memories 🥰 & I will be getting this book 🙌🏿

So crazy I did not know Kerry Washington is a Bronx grrl?! As a Bronx grrl from the South Bx I hated it growing up bc we were so poor, but now, as an adult, I love, respect and deeply appreciate how I learned to be Fearless. And grrl Crotona Pool was our pool and in the 80s 💩🤣🤣🤣. I would love to have a full circle moment with my hometown and have contemplated "the how" many, many times. You ladies def have me thinking. Thanks for walking in your full Bronxite Stride. Love y'all both.

Yes, Essence and Jet magazines were a staple!! I worked in the Bronx for 10 years. Also lived in Riverdale for 7 of those 10 years. Best years of my career. Best Borough in my opinion. Nothing but great times. What was said about New Yorkers is totally true. Some of my best friends are New Yorkers.They are truthful and loyal people.
