      It's not my absolute favorite car, but it does look pretty cool. It's like all the best qualities of every '80s muscle car condensed into one vehicle. I tend to prefer the F-body Firebird over the Camaro (for Knight Rider reasons) but, aside from the '69, this generation is my favorite Camaro.

    • @MidnightMechanic
      @MidnightMechanic Před 6 lety +197

      It's heavy metal wrapped into a sports muscle car with truck parts. You can hear the Ozzy ringing through the stereo, even when it's off. Didn't even have to be fast, or rear wrangling torquey, just stylish with an iconic V8 rumble. All the 4 and 6 cylinders are wrong, swap them immediately for a V8.

      Midnight Mechanic Spot on. For those of us old enough to remember it is literally the embodiment of every jock, Cobra Kai member, and hair metal band from 1987. What’s interesting is many times it takes years of hindsight for such a correlation to be realized. No. Even in 1987 everything this car represents was already fully realized. I will say that with one exception: there were a certain amount of buyers that were the middle age, sensible, wanting a genuine sports car with a back seat and this thing ticked a lot of boxes since the Corvette wasn’t an option. Remember, back then you did not have anywhere as many options as today. So yes by 1987 this gen of F body was already well on its way to “trash class” status you would find some minority owners that were just enthusiasts. The huge thing about this car was it was the first year of the 350 which was supposed to end the 5.0 war (it didn’t). Volumes could be written about this car and it’s connection to the mid to late 80s which is why were are still fascinated by it to those of us that remember the 80s fondly.

    As a Brit, the IROC-Z has always been the American muscle car I've loved. It's like a perfect piece of Americana. Like a slice of apple pie. Sure there's apple strudel from Germany, frangipane from France, bakewell tarts from England and torta di mele from Italy... They all arguably taste better and don't give you acid reflux, but what's wrong with a bargain basement apple pie from Walmart? Served warm with dollop of generic brand vanilla ice cream, who doesn't want to eat it? You'll wolf it down like a half starved labrador and lick the fucking bowl clean while you're at it. And you'll be thankful for the opportunity. It doesn't need to be sophisticated. It has to look just appealing enough and taste reasonable to satisfy your appetite. God bless America.

    You perfectly described my high school best friend's dad without the Camaro. He had a big 36' Welcraft cabin cruiser that he named "WildMan". He installed the Exact Same steering wheel on that boat. He openly bragged about the "Badass small block 400" in that thing while eating Red Robin cheeseburgers. To his credit the SBC 400 was badass. He built it himself, and it sounded mean. It pushed that big boat pretty well, it'd go about 18 mph or so. That's really fast on the water for a 1 ton boat...damnit...im an IROC guy too....

    I don't care what anyone says, these are still fantastic looking cars. Though this particular one needs the chrome door trim gone STAT. The L98 350 versions had low end torque for days, and the ones with the performance suspension handled pretty damn good as well.
    I had the Pontiac version of this car in the late 90's, an 88 Trans Am GTA. I wanted an IROC, until I saw and drove a GTA. Same power, but WAAAYYYYY nicer interior and seats. The GTA came with the WS6 pkg, which had such goodies as 4 wheel vented disks, posi rear, aluminum driveshaft, and factory engine oil cooler. Big stuff for 1988.
    Mr Regular got the power numbers wrong. 1987 had 225hp/330ft lbs,, with an extra 5 hp in 88-89, and 90--92 has 245hp/345tq. These were great for the stoplight drags, with that low end torque they were beasts off the line, though they ran out of steam around 4500 rpm.

      @Skylar McCune: Couldn't be more wrong in my case. I needed to replace my STOLEN Buick GN in a hurry. The ins company had stopped paying for my rental (that I was getting VERY sick of, anyway) even though, after 30 days, they hadn't found it. Local Chevy dealer had this Bright Blue Metallic IROC-Z demo with 305 TPI and 4AT. Had a couple thou on it, but A-title and full warranty. 2 weeks later, cops found my GN wrapped around a pole in the badlands of North Philly. Had it towed to my apt in NE Philly, thinking of buying the wreck. BGN was a GREAT power train in search of a good car (like IROC) BUT, I was told I couldn't buy it, because it was a theft claim! It would have been an earlier version of '89 20th anniv Trans Am pace car replica.
      NOW, I'm past my prime - Hell I'm over the hill and halfway down the other side - but I bought a 2017 Camaro 2SS, last year, for my 64th birthday. Same color as my '87, twice as many gears, more than twice the HP & TQ of my IROC - and I'm almost twice the age I was in '87. BUT, now I have a house with a garage. Somebody was always trying to steal my IROC, when I parked it on the street. Maybe they wouldn't if I put "305" on a front license plate or something...

    I guess not growing up with F-Bodies driving around gives a VERY different opinion from this car. I know this is mostly satirical but it uses all the clichés I hear from americans about them. It's really hard to understand the "trash", and "I feel ugly driving it". They're quite far from perfect, but they look fantastic and stand out in the crowd in a great way.
    And the 305 is not even close to the worst V8 GM built, it's a good engine, but has less potential than the 350. They often were sold as the base V8 at that time with very low HP figures, shitty camshaft, dished pistons, low compression heads with shoddy airflow, and tiny restrictive exhaust, when at the same moment, the 350 was the performance option. A later LB9 (TPI 305) would output 230hp for 300ft-lbs of torque, no bad at all. But I'm sure the Ford 302 is still a better engine.
    Worst GM V8 would be the 267 chevy or the 265 Pontiac, those are engines that had no performance options because that's not what they were made for.

      SuperDuty455 That’s what I was thinking. My brother’s first car was a 1991 Camaro with a 305 TBI, horrible car. Paint was faded, exhaust was even worse, he had 275s on the rear and swears up and down to this day “I got them to chirp going uphill” but, it was a fun car. I’ll never forget all the times we went to abandon parking lots, taking turns doing donuts, being broken down cause the car overheated for the 300th time, getting compliments all the time or getting the “I used to have one of these just like this” story. They’re good cars. And people view his G92 Iroc the same way. These cars spark conversations with people that are usually antisocial because they have a story to tell with them. Also a funny thing is, people instantly recognize the camaro but when they see my 1991 firebird Formula they think, “Is that a corvette?”. Third gen Fbody cars are the cars to have at least once in your life.

It was the car I've always wanted since I was a little kid back in the 80s. I completely love that car, quirks and all. It goes well. It stops well. It corners well. It's comfortable. The AC was converted over to R134 and blows nice and cold. It's also substantially healthier than stock (heads, cam, throttle body, headers and full exhaust). And yes, I've heard every single mullet joke known to man. But I'll tell you one thing. For every smartass making a joke about mullets or hair bands, there's another person who comes up and tells me how much they love that car. Either it's an older guy who had one when he was young, or it's a guy closer to my age who always wanted one, and now and then it's a kid who doesn't really get it, but thinks it's a cool-looking car anyway. I get double-takes and thumbs-up everywhere I go. I love that car. I don't know how long we'll be together, but I plan to enjoy every mile.

There was this guy in KC, Deffenbaugh who owned the main waste management service and landfill. He collected cars and would buy them brand new, have the dealer meet him at whatever storage shed he was putting the car in, settle up, park the car in there and it would never be seen again. I forget all the cars he had (it was over 300), but one that stuck out was the last IROC Camaro off the line. Him... He sold his business for $300 million. Shortly after, he was getting an MRI, fell off the table and was paralyzed from the neck down. He finally passed away about 10 years later. It sold for only $27k at an auction in 2015... It only had 135 miles on it.

    I picked up a '92 RS 5.0 L03 for $1900 a couple of years ago. It's actually great. Fuel economy's decent, not fast by any means, simple, very reliable, and most importantly RUMBLY FUN. It was a trash class vehicle, and by most measures it still is. Thing is though, it's cool for what it is in my generation. A simple, cheap, sports car in a sea of 2000's CUV's and economy cars in a school parking lot. It's different, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

  • @vintagecapgunsatyourmomshouse

    My dad took me car shopping the summer after my junior year in the mid-90s. $5k budget. He tried so hard to steer me into an 85 Toyota 4Runner. (Which ironically became my first off-road truck build, 15 years later) But I took home a red 88 IROC.
    I will literally never forget pulling up to my buddy's house after I drove it off the lot and the drive we took in the country that night. Tyson, Jason, Jayson and me. I transferred from snob knob to an Intercity school for my senior year on purpose and it was fucking glorious. It was the nicest car in school and I had an obscene level of fun. Girls asked me out to lunch for months just to ride in this car. I took this car to so many dances, so many parties, so many road trips. It was looking a little battered when I went off to University and I remember being a little self-conscious about it by that time. I found coolant in the oil at 205K, sold her to a scrap yard for 1K. I am nostalgic for this time but not this car.

    Finally :D I have an 87 iroc z with tpi 305 @ 215hp/295tq and 5 speed stick. It's sweet! Love her! Buckets of fun for cheap.
    That 305 is actually okay for having some fun. Bumpier cam than factory, MPFI with 8 injectors (not the TBI junkaroo). Got lucky and found a G92/hardtop/five speed, turns out GM threw a little cam in from the factory giving it a little bump in hp/tq. Leather interior. She's rough but now that I have her I do the best I can to take care of her. I wish people appreciated older cars like these more. They may not have been super popular when they came out compared to a corvette, but they have a lot of character. New cars don't have that.

  • @MidnightMechanic
    @MidnightMechanic Před 6 lety +69

    No. The 305 can't even be remotely compared to the shitstorm Northstar, two entirely different universes. The only difference between the 305 and 350 is bore size, and the 305's far less prone to winter cracking because of the extra iron. Bolted to a 4 speed auto, it's a combination that, if well maintained, can get well over 250,000 miles, mine's living proof. The small block is so easy to maintain, that it's criminal to let anything lapse. Takes less than 5 seconds to remove the serpentine belt, takes less than 5 hours to replace the timing chain. I really, REALLY wanted to enjoy this video, until you made the comparison to the Northstar, instant nausea.

    • @theotherwayofstopping4717

    • @Raptor3388
      @Raptor3388 Před 6 lety +12

      Yeah the 305 is NOT a bad engine, it just doesn't have the same potential as the 350 (for the same amount of money you'll spend on a SBC, you'll get more power out of the 350). But in itself, it's good and reliable, and can be made with strong HP. My 190hp HO 305 is a lot of fun, and a screamer, love that.
      I have a feeling Mr Regular is a pro Ford guy who just reads to much Ford vs Chevy memes :P

    • @MidnightMechanic
      @MidnightMechanic Před 6 lety +3

      SuperDuty455 not sure how anyone can be a fan of Ford when they can't even make spark plugs and timing chains right. The only time they made a good engine is when they didn't make an engine at all, International-Navistar had to do it for them.

    • @eaglefat9398
      @eaglefat9398 Před 6 lety +5

      comparing the tune port 5.7 to a ford 302 is silly, sure peak tq is only 20 ft lbs more but never could anybody ever mistake the brutal torque of a turn port to a w302, and GM's 305 was the same as buying v6 camaro today, it made ok power and made swapping one of the 100 million 5.7L that litter junk yards, all you needed was a long block which by 1985 everybody and their mother had a 4 bolt 350 sitting in their yard
