When I was first watching Adventure Time, I was unaware of my gender: wow this marceline character sure is neat. I hope they have more episodes with her. I like that she's gay, lesbian relationships make me happy for some reason. By the time i got to S3 i understood why. Then I buried those reasons for several years. Anyway, my point is that the show is incredibly important to me, especially Marcy. I really relate to her outsider dirtbag futchness. I know she isn't canonically trans but that's fine, she can be trans in my head.

I loved Adventure Time, it was coming out while I was in high school. I fell off it because I had a friend who was very competitive about liking things and she decided she liked it first and the most (despite coming to it later than most of our friend group) and would shut down people talking about it unless she wanted to talk about it which ruined it for me so I stopped watching. I've since realised I let her take something from me but I still haven't been able to go back to it.
I watched a season or two of this long, long ago (though I don't recall a seperate pilot) and loved it. However, I fell off and am LONG overdue to return!
I cried at the Adventure Time finale too, and still tear up a little sometimes when I listen to Time Adventure. What Was Missing is a classic banger; great choice of recommendation. Thanks for these short, sweet little videos. I've really been enjoying them all.
Adventure Time is my favorite show too! But as someone who grew up watching the show from a very young age, I have to wonder if I might’ve also missed out on it if I was in your situation as I’m also someone who intentionally avoids some things because it’s easier to be apart from them than do the work of actually experiencing them. Ironically, since we’re talking about Adventure Time and she has a song in the show, Mitski is an artist I long avoided out of some sense of pride and some preconception that I wouldn’t enjoy her music. Now, Mitski’s music has helped me get through a lot and I’m a huge fan! It’s crazy all the good we can allow into our lives when we open ourselves up to it.
I would love it if you put a permanent version of this together, or just like wrote it up and posted it somewhere. I feel like a lot of people need this advice, I know quite a few people who could use this advice.
Lmao I used to despise Scott Pilgrim because the movie trailer looked lame, then I ended up playing the game, reading the comics and watching the anime (still haven't watched the movie, tho).
I remembering as a teenager dismissing adventure time because of the art style, until one day I was in hotel with my family and the cartoon was on tv and me and my brother started watching it and watched a lot of it and i loved it. Never finished the show, but yeah it's good and you're so right

this was me with jojo's bizarre adventure, and i only started actually watching any of it *this year* just to immediately love it and regret avoiding it i had heard some bad things about it (mainly the iffy guys from part 2) and assumed the worst of it before i knew any of the context, but let this be a message for those who might be in the same boat: Look Into Things Yourself, Instead of Going by Other People's Hearsay, and Make Your Own Judgements

I picked up on a couple tracks from Undertale, ikenfell, and Celeste, which kind of inspire these feelings of..."wait didn't this hit me harder before?" I mean, Undertale may have become my favorite game for a time, but I think I may have cooled off on it by now. I liked ikenfell and Celeste, and I'm pretty sure they filled me with some strong emotions when I played them, but I don't know if I ever Loved them, like some people seemed to (especially with Celeste). I don't know exactly where I'm going with this, but expectations are difficult and maybe it's not great to build something up in your mind before you have enough actual experience with said thing? (y'know, the video's thesis) (also I don't know if I ever finished the B-side that track comes from) (also also I definitely was an Adventure Time hater before I actually sat down and watched the show intentionally and realized I really liked it and now I worry what it will be like when/if I go back to it since I've watched the whole thing)
I made my ok ko recommendation in one of the streams but I do think it would be a good show for you and your kid. it has a similar lineage to AT, being made by Rebecca Sugar's partner. it's pretty diverse too. The creator (Ian JQ) is black and explores a lot of his experiences through one of the main cast members. it has a lot of Hispanic influence too. but most of all, it's another show that loves being a cartoon and embraces every aspect of its medium to be fun and poignant.

I think my casual like turned into loving it at the earliest sometime season three (possibly What Was Missing), latest I Remember You. It was never my FAVORITE show but I was very captivated by Simon's whole everything and, when the show started to drag a little in the back half, I kept watching to see if he would be normal again. Even if that meant losing Ice King, it just wasn't right to keep Simon stuck like that, he never asked for that. As for things I'm too prideful to watch, i guess it's Teen Titans Go lol these aren't my Titans dammit. I vehemently disliked the show in high school, i have since mellowed a little towards and put it (and Uncle Grandpa) in the "not for me" box
I had a very similar experience. I only got into it in season 3 after being uncontrollably drawn to it after the Fionna episode. The commercials for season 1 are particularly bad in my defense.

Essentially, I needed to find a different way of making content because I was feeling stagnant and unmotivated, so I decided to make a video a week for the summer, but erase the videos a week later (since I felt that these new videos, while I'd be putting a ton of effort into them, wouldn't be as good or interesting as I wanted them to be).

It has amazing ideas and moments, but overall I would cut most of the episodes and moments to enjoy it, which would transform the series into something different I feel like there are too many episodes of no consequence and they feel like filler to me. I saw a dozen episodes or slightly more. The series has great moments and lots of filler

I don't need an episode to advance some overarching narrative to enjoy it. My favorite episodes of the show often just reveal some insight or thought while being funny and entertaining, that's enough for me. Take, for instance, the second season episode "Video Makers." Nothing of "consequence" happens, Jake and Finn try to make their own movie and have creative differences. BMO helps them get over their conflict. On the surface, nothing happens, but I find it a particularly insightful and interesting look at artistic collaboration and the intrinsic difficulty in making art in the first place. Sure, "nothing happens" but because I think about this episode and remember it, more than enough happens for it to be meaningful to me. I wonder how you would define "filler." I generally use that word to describe episodes of television primarily produced because the show had to keep to a particular schedule and "filler" episodes have little depth/nuance, but are cheap and easy to produce. This might include a Friends episode primarily composed of "memories" (read, compilation footage) or a sequence of episodes in an anime season produced while the manga's plot catches up, or the production team works on future episodes. I would say Adventure Time has NO filler by that criteria. Does this mean you should like Adventure Time? No! But I wonder if the moving definition of "filler" might be part of the difficulty in enjoying certain media for some folks. Now I'm interested in making a video about "filler" media though, so thank you for that!
@@iamerror I know it's a preference thing. I recognize the quality and effort that goes into a show like that, but it is truly not my cup of tea. "Slice of life" genre is the one I always struggled to watch. There are very few works of fiction in that genre that catch me and all of them are books. I grew up watching movies and I liked the ones that used their limited time very efficiently, which means that most scenes should do the following: 1. Give characterization to key characters; 2. Develop the plot (move the story forward); 3. Make sense (be authentic); 4. Move the character along their arch. I love the movies that combine all of those, examples are relatively well-known: Matrix, Interstate 60, Back to the Future, Mask, Collateral There's a perfect example of this taste preference. I love time-travel mechanics and themes and I really wanted to love "Steins: Gate" anime series. But it was a slice of life anime that had very little events of consequence in any given episode. I struggled to finish it in spite of the theme I love. I would define filler as something of little to no consequence to the characters and future events. In Adventure Time there are brief tiny moments of character progression that pay off later, but most of characterization that is shown in episodes is done for the sake of the flavor, not for painting a bigger picture. It's funny: The media of movies taught me to look out for scenes are are not using screen time efficiently, so I struggle to watch slice of life and mood pieces unless I'm looking for an art-house experience The media of games taught me to look out for the unpleasant grind, so I struggle to stay in MMORPGs for over 10 days because I meet a grind wall and in most MMORPGs it is not a grind I enjoy. Grind I enjoy could be found in * Programming, which is why I work as a programmer and played over 100 hours of else Heart.Break(); * Stealth, which is why I have 100% achievements in Heat Signature and Dishonored series; * and some other things I cannot think of right now. All of that made me filter out some experiences. It would be one thing if I didn't want to give them a try, but it's more of a thing that I fail to enjoy that time and it feels less engaging when there might be no consequences to what I'm seeing. This is why I love table-top role-playing (I have ran over 180 sessions as a GM) - I can make experience meaningful and consequential even if I hadn't planned for it

Your own preconceived notions can certainly hold you back, but there's no right or wrong way to get into and enjoy media.

I know it's a preference thing. I recognize the quality and effort that goes into a show like that, but it is truly not my cup of tea.
"Slice of life" genre is the one I always struggled to watch. There are very few works of fiction in that genre that catch me and all of them are books.
I grew up watching movies and I liked the ones that used their limited time very efficiently, which means that most scenes should do the following:
1. Give characterization to key characters;
2. Develop the plot (move the story forward);
3. Make sense (be authentic);
4. Move the character along their arch.
I love the movies that combine all of those, examples are relatively well-known: Matrix, Interstate 60, Back to the Future, Mask, Collateral
There's a perfect example of this taste preference. I love time-travel mechanics and themes and I really wanted to love "Steins: Gate" anime series. But it was a slice of life anime that had very little events of consequence in any given episode. I struggled to finish it in spite of the theme I love.
I would define filler as something of little to no consequence to the characters and future events.
In Adventure Time there are brief tiny moments of character progression that pay off later, but most of characterization that is shown in episodes is done for the sake of the flavor, not for painting a bigger picture.

The media of movies taught me to look out for scenes are are not using screen time efficiently, so I struggle to watch slice of life and mood pieces unless I'm looking for an art-house experience
The media of games taught me to look out for the unpleasant grind, so I struggle to stay in MMORPGs for over 10 days because I meet a grind wall and in most MMORPGs it is not a grind I enjoy.
Grind I enjoy could be found in
* Programming, which is why I work as a programmer and played over 100 hours of else Heart.Break();
* Stealth, which is why I have 100% achievements in Heat Signature and Dishonored series;
* and some other things I cannot think of right now.
All of that made me filter out some experiences. It would be one thing if I didn't want to give them a try, but it's more of a thing that I fail to enjoy that time and it feels less engaging when there might be no consequences to what I'm seeing.
This is why I love table-top role-playing (I have ran over 180 sessions as a GM) - I can make experience meaningful and consequential even if I hadn't planned for it
