خلق الخيل وأول من أتخذها، وانتشارها في الأرض قال على بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:) لما أراد الله تعالى أن يخلق الخيل قال للريح الجنوب: إني خالق منك خلقاً فأجعله عزًّ الأوليائي، ومذلة لأعدائي، وحمى لأهل طاعتي، فقالت الريح: أخلق، فقبض منها قبضة فخلق فرساً، فقال له: سميتك فرساً، وخلقتك عربياً، وجعلت الخير معقوداً بناصيتك، والغنائم مَحُوزَة على ظهرك، والعز معك حيثما كنت، آثرتك على غيرك من الدواب، وجعلتك لها سيداً، وعطفت عليك صاحبك، وجعلتك تطير بلا جناح، فأنت للطلب، وأنت للهرب، وسأحمل على ظهرك رجالاً يسبحوني ويكبروني ويهللوني، تسّبِح إذا سبحوا، وتهلل إذا هللوا، وتكبرَّ إذا كبروا، قال: فليس من تسبيحه ولا تكبيرة ولا تهليلة يهللها صاحبها فيسمعها إلا وتجيبه نمثلها. ثم قال: فلما سمعت الملائكة صفة الفرس وعاينوا خَلقها، قالت: أيْ ربي! نحن ملائكتك نسبِّحك ونكبرك ونهللك فماذا لنا؟ فخلق الله للملائكة خيلاً بلقا، لها أعناق كأعناق البُخْت، أمدَّ بها من شاء من أنبيائه ورسله، أرسل الفَرَس إلى الأرض واستوت قدماه عليها صهل، فقال: بوركت من دابة! أُذلُّ بصهيلك المشركين، وأرعبُ به قلوبهم، وأَملأ آذانهم، وأُذلُّ به أعناقهم، ثم لما عَرَض على آدم ما خلق من شيء فسماه باسمه، وقال له: اختر من خلقي ما شئت، فاختار الفرس، فقال له: اخترتَ عزك وعز ولدك، خالداً ما خلدوا، وباقياً ما بقُوا؛ بركتي عليك وعليهم، ما خلقتُ خلقاً أحب إليّ ومنهم، ثم وسمه بغُرَّة وتحجيل، فصار ذلك من لدنه (. قال مؤلف كتاب الحيوان:) الفرس من طبعه الزهو في المشي، ويحب سائسه ويعجب راكبه، ولا يحب الأولاد، وهو غيور، ويعرف المصيبة (. وذكر الأصمعي أن رجلاً معتوها جاء إلى أبي عمرو بن العلاء، فقال: يا أبا عمرو، لم سميت الخيل خيلاً؟ فبقي أبو عمرو ليس عنده فيها جواب، فقال: لا أدري! الرجل: لكني أدري! فقال علِّمنا نعلم! قال: لاختيالها في المشي، فقال أبو عمرو لأصحابه بعد ما ولَّي الرجل: اكتبوا الحكمة وارووها عن معتوه.
