    You literally transferred me back to 1998, when I was a boy hungering for sci-fi horror. I stopped at each new game-location, hearing the clanging metal and heavy breathing around the corner, and tried to understand what kind of place it was, what's its significance in my adventure.
    And so you visualized and novelized it all! Huge gratitude for such work, mate 🔥

    Intro was amazing! Really loved it! Really sells the failure of the initial attack on Stroggos. 200,000 souls filled with neverending rage and vengeance quickly turned to 10,000 either locked up in a cell in the Torture Chambers, being turned into Stroyent, already dead, or, in Joker, Stepchild, and Bitterman's case - survived, with sadness, vitriol and anger replacing their initial thoughts. Great stuff.

    Ok I just had to drop another comment to appreciate how good the editing is. It makes the narration way better. Instead of just reading the wiki pages and putting some gameplay/flyover clips, you actually keep the image coherent and in tune with the plot of the video. And additional sound design gives more depth to it. Perfect.

    • @megacide84
      @megacide84 Před 9 měsíci +5

      In my headcanon...
      Stroggos already experienced a brutal Eldritch invasion.
      The population fought back however, the war went very badly.
      On the eve of total defeat, Stroggification of the surviving population was implemented as a final last resort.
      With wave after wave of cybernetic super solders and even captured Stroggified Eldritch forces. The tide of the war turned. After years if not decades of fighting.
      The invasion was repelled and the Strogg followed the Eldritch retreat back to their realm and took the fight directly to them.
      Though the Strogg couldn't destroy the Eldritch.
      They inflicted massive damage to the realm.
      Where any and all portals leading directly to Stroggos were destroyed. Hence why we saw Strogg supply crates scattered throughout the first Quake.
      With the Eldritch threat neutralized. Stroggos emerged victorious, but...
      It was a Pyrrhic victory. Stroggos was now a barren hellscape. It's population now consisting entirely of war machines. It's programming gone haywire. Instead of standing down and rebuilding.
      The Strogg continued their war footing.
      Attacking and conquering other civilizations in the galaxy including Earth.
      This to me was the 'Frankenstein' event Matthew Kane talked about after his Stroggification and rescue in Quake 4.

  • @KonigDesTodes
    @KonigDesTodes Před 10 měsíci +3

    Great video like the previous ones. Two things: Firstly, based on the GZ manual, the expansions *DO* happen concurrently, so that entry caveat feels a bit silly to me. ;) Though I do get confusion since the Ground Zero unit cutscenes in the remaster has the Big Gun blown up. I guess they could be said to occur right after Bitterman blows up the Big Gun, since there is radio chatter talking about additional deployments iirc, though I always interpreted this to refer to the Adrianator class ships we can see flyby overhead.
    Second, you're missing Viper's narrative from the Quake II 64 story. Based on the n64 manual, Viper (the default name given on the console version, doesn't get mentioned in the game) is an elite Special Operations marine sent in for recon of Stroggos defenses. Though the loading screens are misleading as it shows 4 "planets", it's technically just Stroggos and its moon based on the in-game objectives.
    Viper goes through the Strogg Base that Bitterman lands in* and recovers intelligence on the orbital defenses of Stroggos, hijacks Strogg teleporters to go to said orbital defense and blow it up, escapes onto a stroggos freighter (same class of freighter that Joker uses to get to the moon)*, redirects that to the moon and uses an escape pod to land on Stroggos' moon, where they quickly destabilize the Zaxite Mine there, then teleport back to the planet's surface and make their way through various facilities and mines to the Command Core which they then destroy. What the command core is, unfortunately, doesn't seem to be clarified. But I guess it's a similar concept to the Quake 4 Nexus.
    In theory, Viper's actions preceded that of Bitterman's, and the entire Operation:Overlord might have been formulated based on Viper's actions...
    * To clarify, three levels from the N64 campaigns are simplified versions of 1 level from Q2 Unit 1 (Communications Center) and 2 levels from TR (Strogg Freighter and Lower Hangers (called Organic Storage in N64)).

I played it probably for years and just like Quake, made levels for it. For the last 27 years, both Quake and Quake II are the games that I have re-installed the most, usually every 4-5 years. Quake 2 is one of my favorites in the idsoft series and the Strogg lore (even with some similarities with the Borg from Star Trek) really fascinates me, I'm always been nuts for seeing cyborg stuff.
    This video, the way is presented, narrated, edited and the additional camera views of the Strogg locations, really makes look epic a game from 1997, running in the idtech2 engine, that fitted in less than 500MB, it always amazed me how optimized were those vintage games, not a single byte to waste.
    Also, comparing with classic Quake 2, I see enhanced graphics in the video scenes here, that leads me to ask what modern source port you used to generate the scenes, since I am a Linux user, I only have access to Yamagi Quake 2, and no luck trying to compile KmQuake or Quake 2 Evolved on Linux

      @lechumqc7910  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Thank you! It is true that, for example, the Makron would not feel fear, as he is the most powerful Strogg of all. But as far as I understand, Stroggs, while some predominantly mechanical, still possess a biological core, including a brain, so they are not 'robots,' per se. They have been observed to laugh, express surprise, show anger, and even feel loneliness. While the Makron is unlikely to experience fear, he could very well be surprised and angered by the havoc a 'lesser' human can wreak, or might even struggle to process what's happening. Any dialogue we create for Stroggs caracthers should be understood as a translation, given they don't speak the same language as humans.

    • @StroggKingu
      @StroggKingu Před 10 měsíci

      Sure i get that, but on the other hand i view that a bit relating to how i see stuff, more logical with a bit less intuitive and more logical trying to get around emotions. That's why anger and surprise sure, but not the vision of impossible.
      Where this laugh, surprise, anger, and loneliness on them can be observed?

    • @lechumqc7910
      @lechumqc7910  Před 10 měsíci +2

      The Makron's laughter can be heard towards the end of the game. As for surprise and loneliness, these emotions are showing in the Quake Champions lore of "Strogg and Peeker." The sense of anger is inferred from the audio of enemies in Quake 2 and Quake 4 (while this might be more of a perception), who certainly sound enraged. But I understand your point. While not much is known about the Makron's background, there's a lot of room for interpretation regarding his character. We don't even know if the Makron's brain is human; it could belong to another species entirely, one that doesn't experience emotions for instance.@@StroggKingu

    • @KonigDesTodes
      @KonigDesTodes Před 10 měsíci +1

      Regarding the Makron being human or not - imo it's unlikely based on the Q2 manual, which says that *only* the guards are humans among the Q2 enemies (expanding to the three new guards in TR). I'd suspect the Makron to be an original Stroggos inhabitant, or from a planet prior to their conquest of the Griess (which are what most Q2/Q4 enemies are, based on Strogg & Peeker's QC lore scrolls). One of the Makron's taunts are calling Bitterman out as human, which would seem strange if they were once human too.@@lechumqc7910

    So, is Quake II 64 part of the canon, or not?

      It's a gray area? For some, it's an N64 port of the original Quake 2 with different level design and locations. But others see it as a separate mission from the perspective of another Marine named Viper. The name comes from the default name given to the character when the player wants to change it. The remastered edition of Quake 2 never mentions him, so we didn't include him in the story.

    Yo, what the fuck? Is Joker's voice actor Mr. Not Important from Hatred? Like.. it's subtle. but kind of reminds me of him.

      I can see the ressemblance! But I can guarantee I wouldn't be able to afford his services. 😅

      @@lechumqc7910 At least, not right now I hope. Also, having schedules need to be maintained and all that or however business is handled. Imagine if you could get familiar people doing voicelines within these series. That's a dream plus the fun of making these videos I bet.

      I really hope to get it released by Monday. But a more realistic time would be mid-week. I hope you guys will like it. :)
