Welcome to Part 1 of our deep dive into Quake 4, where we explore the evolving battlefield in the relentless war against the Strogg. In this segment, we'll compare the current situation to the events of Quake 2, setting the stage for the new challenges and adversaries ahead. Get ready to meet our favorite badass, Matthew Kane, as he joins his new squad. We'll be following Kane's journey from the very beginning, detailing his initial missions and the crucial role he plays in this renewed conflict. Strap in as we embark on this action-packed adventure to see how Kane and his squad navigate the treacherous terrains of Stroggos, fighting to turn the tide in this epic battle.
We've utilized recorded footage from Doom 3 to recreate scenes not explicitly shown in Quake 4, leveraging the fact that both games share the same engine. Additionally, as we'll explore in the next episode, there's an intriguing, albeit unconfirmed, theory that Quake 4 initially had plans to bridge its story with that of Doom 3. However, these plans would have been shelved, possibly due to the mixed reception of Quake 4 at its release.

I wonder what the in-universe explanation is for not bombarding Stroggos from orbit. Obviously, the real reason is "because then we wouldn't have a videogame", but I always like hearing these things justified within the setting. "Hey Sarge, why aren't we just glassing the planet?"
Fingers crossed for a Quake 5 continuation of Stroggs and related things from Quake 1 and so forth!
Quake 4 is one of my favorite video games of all time. Each year I take the pilgrimage and do a playthrough of this fantastic game. It is criminally underrated - it's the best horror FPS ever imo.

Edit: The portrayal of the lore in this video is deeper than the actual lore of the game
One thing I love about those old games is the sheer liberty you have with those engines and their console commands ^^

Wonder if the "Mar's riots" is actually the cover-up story for Doom 3 in-universe. Bit of a stretch, but maybe Voss was "buried alive and tortured repeatedly" in Hell. Since time flows differently, he spent six months there, however time flows differently in hell, and barely a few days went by on Mars. He then was rescued when the fleet arrived and secured the area and sealed off the underground. Could be he had orders to keep silent about it, hence why nobody knows much about his experience, and given the strogg war, they didn't bother retiring him medically, instead opting to throw him back into the fray.

Some commentary @3:10 - the other ships don't seem to have been "positioned just outside Stroggos' perimeter". We see them warping in, which would imply more that they were reinforcements straight from Earth, or at least were very far away. It's known that humanity reverse engineered the Strogg's slipgate tech at some point, so it's likely this was used for the second wave as the notion of "not being able to return home" is, afaik, never mentioned in Quake 4 despite the Strogg's black hole generator being long destroyed.

That one was tricky. I also thought they could have been coming from Earth, but then what's the purpose of a slipgate if they can just hyperspace to Stroggos? Maybe that's how they wanted to portray slipgate travel? But the black hole generator was destroyed. Does it mean Earth could use their slipgate but not the Strogg? All in all, the fleet stationed outside Stroggos scenario was the most logical, but it could also be as they thought it would look cool to have three spaceships jump into the scene.
@@lechumqc7910 Although it's unclear when it happened, we do know that humanity reverse engineered the Strogg's slipgate technology and was able to use it themselves at some point. This is a key element of the lore for Keel, Eisen, Clutch, and the other post-Strogg War characters of Quake Champions, within the same century as said war. My interpretation given the pieces we have between the games and SyncError's comments on the official Quake discord would be that the technology was reverse engineered in the middle of the war - between when Phobos and Deimos were launched (which used Stroggs' slipgate), and when Patton and the other 2+ ships launched (which used Earth's slipgate).
@@KonigDesTodes That's interesting. 🤔I always understood the reverse-engineered aspect to be in relation to the slipgate used to get to Stroggos. Huh, intriguing. In your theory, does this mean Earth has its own black hole generator, or do each of the ships have their own slipgate technology integrated into them?
@@lechumqc7910 According to Goroth's lorescroll, ships have (or will have) individual slipdrives. But this is a couple centuries after the Strogg war. I doubt that black hole generators are strictly required for slipgates, given Quake 1, but it'd make more sense for humans to have their own built somehow than install slipdrives on ships right after reverse engineering the tech.

Cortez was the only marine who knew about altfire on a machinegun. He's kinda imbalanced, but really good in helping to kill stroggs.

I'll be honest, Sledge's model doesn't make him look 25, he looks as though he's in his mid to late 30s. Even Kane's rank as corporal, is surprising imo, as he's still 21 years old. Barely any older than Anderson, by 2 years, who's considered the "kid" of the squad. Perhaps if the ages of some of the squad members were slightly changed, then I'd have an easier time believing these men are at a believable age to be in their respective ranks. As for sledge I think he just needs a redesign, because the model they used makes him appear much older than his current canonized age.
gotta say they really did well with what they had with the army stuff and body horror would love a remake or quake 5 in modern looks and shit

looking foward to the detail on "Operation Advantage" after the 2nd wave ended with human footholds achieved on Stroggos. There was a lot happening in the background that people may miss. It did seem a significant army was taking part in it, yet it was a fubared assault to the point it ended up with only 2 men assigned to the final objective (Strauss and Kane). There's an unused type of destroyed SMC light hovertank with just an MG and rocket launcher in the aqueducts - the aqueducts may have been used as attack routes for some units presuming that they all lead to the tetranode (maybe these canals are for liquid cooling purposes). In any case, Advantage was a Strogg victory, they achieved attrition and the humans got nothing in return
