- Ngl, this song stayed in my head for a while after this. I never thought about where the private Idaho phrase came from, so it's cool that it was The B-52's. Also, I'm sorry for how many times I say private Idaho in this video.
Thanks for watching!

B52s are really underrated. They had some big commercial moments but were never taken very seriously by critics who mostly dismissed them as a novelty band. However, I think they're one of the most innovative New Wave bands. People often miss the sinister, dark quality they have under all the retro day-glo theatricality.
I first heard this song on the radio in 1981 while driving on Interstate 85 in Atlanta. I was so blown away that I pulled off the freeway, drove to the nearest record store, and bought the album. It's still one of my favorite songs of the rock era.
Notice how he smiled right near the beginning of the song? It's impossible to listen to a B-52's song without doing that.
As almost always, these are such profound lyrics from the 52s. This song is great for those times when you just don't want to think!
The band is from Athens, GA, home to the University of Georgia where they were students when the band was formed. Also from this little college town: R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Azure Ray, Pylon, the Glands, Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Dead Confederate, John Barry, Ravenstone, Danger Mouse, Love Tractor, and so many more. Just an amazing little town that The NY Times said is the birthplace of indie music.
Me and my punk mates loved this band. They twisted and quirked all over the place.
I love Kate Pierson's unique voice. The duo track she did with Iggy Pop - "Candy"... love it!
You're really missing out if you don't watch the video of them playing their instruments doing this song, the video with the bright yellow background in it.
My favorite B-52s songs are 1) Mesopotamia (produced by David Byrne), 2) Quiche Lorraine, 3) Rock Lobster. Fred has a few solo albums (song "Monster") and Kate has 1 solo album. After hearing this song, Gus van Sant made "My Own Private Idaho" with Keanu Reeves, River Phoenix, and Flea (bassist of Red Hot Chili Peppers). Good, but strange movie.
That movie has absolutely nothing to do with the B52s song. The movie was based on John Rechy's 1963 novel City of Night.
nice people into music would never dare say anything bad about the B52s. even if their music doesn't appeal to you, it's beyond liking, not liking it :) those 2 ladies, their voices as one, their backing vocals, there have never been vocals like theirs ever. brilliant song. ❤️ (btw, their "legal tender" is one of the best pop songs ever written)
The SPECIALS. A very cool, late-70s, New Wave band that had some unique hits that you'd enjoy if you like Costello, B-52s, Talking Heads, Pretenders, and the Boomtown Rats. Some of my recommendation from their first album are: "TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG, NITE KLUB, and LITTLE BITCH." Lots of others on this debut album, but take a sampling. Their lyrics are like stories and fun to listen to. (Use the remastered, original album versions, ideally.) ---- I subscribed!
B52s - Legal Tender, and Pump - are both really good.
Planet Claire!
52 girls is a great early song of theirs
another fun one is Strobe Light.....and Rock Lobster
Great song and reaction, check out the song “Summer of Love” from the album Bouncing off the Satellites which unfortunately was the last album Ricky Wilson worked on.
B-52's/53 Miles West Of Venus
I love their debut , but I think I prefer this album just a bit more. It rocks harder and has a beefier bass sound through out the album. Check out Quiche Lorraine off this album for a good chuckle.
What a great album
Definitely give Strobe Light a reaction at some point.
The live version is way more compelling.
