- Baby chimpanzee Little Joey is nearing 3 years old. In this segment, we catch up and see how he's doing. After a death-defying start to life the littlest of chimpanzees at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, affectionately aka LJ is becoming a rambunctious adventurous apes. He has survived everything thrown at him, often because of the 24/7 hands-on, expert care of Chimfunshi’s incredible veterinarian Thalita Calvi.
Vet Calvi and the staff at Chimfunshi care for more than 130 chimpanzees, plus many other animals on the property. Please learn more about their critical work and donate here ➜ www.chimfunshiUSA.org

Hi Gerry ! what a pleasure to see the story of Little joey... I don't know if you remember me but I was in Chimfunshi when Baby little joey was saved by Thalita....
A great story of Joey survival. He was so sick and now seeing him with mom in the wild makes my heart rejoice. The lady who cared for him is one in a million care giver. She has done a wonderful job. I have watched him all thru his recovery. Good job people! God will bless you for your efforts.
Well they are not in "the wild". They are all located an enclosed space at a sanctuary.
I just love how chimps, gorillas, and orang-utans are all so gentle and loving with their babies - a bit different to the macaques.
IKR the way the parents treat their offspring Is so much more gentle and the offspring are not as needy, wanting to nurse 24/7 and become independent earlier. I say independent buy what I mean is tgey aren't nursing 24/7 and tgey give mom a break and actually let her eat for 2 mins and not throwing a tantrum every 2-3 mins
@@TMS-pj7fpwhat?? You obviously do not actually know very much about primates. Firstly, ape moms are NOT always gentle with their infants ass you claim and their babies most certainly do tend to be just as if not more clingy ND demanding as any baby macaque is!! In addition to that macaque moms all have very unique personalities as well as parenting styles (just as apes, including humans, do). Some macaque moms are very tolerant, some permissive, some more affectionate and playful, some more disciplinarians, some more restrictive, some more patient...there are all different types and on averge most fall somewhere in the middle of the continuum. There ares some mothers, of both apes and monkeys who are actually abusive. The numbers tends to be about 10%, the same as in humans. There had been a lot of research done on abusive moms especially regarding macaques. It tends to run in familiies and is the tendency to be abusive is often passed down from mother to daughters. There are very specific behaviors that are seen that classify moms as abusive.
You are basing your opinions about macaques on what you see in these videos on youtube that these VOs post in hopes of getting views. They are far more likely to post videos of moms who are mistreating their infant than ones that are more "boring" where a mom is tending to her baby properly. This presents a very skewed view of how macaques usually treat their offspring and it is totally wrong.
And people
It's good to have a buddy. He is growing up.
I love at the end where you show the Mother and little Joey loving & playing with each other. Just amazing. Love this video because it’s so so sweet.
I can watch joey’s story forever! I dont know what it is exactly, but he was so young and his cry
Was so compelling that i had to vicariously be there with him. Then of course Thalita was such a mother/ good doctor it made me happy to know he would be alright in her care. It’s just such a real, heart warming story i need to return to it every now and then. ❤
Thank you! It's a story that's tragic, yet adorable and gives us hope. We're so glad you enjoy our videos. Thank you for your compassion towards little Joey and his kind.
Joey is a cutie. Thrilled that he is doing so well. He has a great mom. 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘

That Joey has got to be the cutest most precious little chimp I have EVER seen. So darn adorable 😍. I am sooo VERY glad that he recuperated from his illness like he did tells me he's a definite fighter. I enjoy watching all the precious animals that God has created so awesome. And thank u to all that u guys do taking care of these little angels. God bless u all and would love to have another follow up on Joey as soon as possible. Thank u take care
He's my favorite Thanks so much for showing how he is,,..please do some more soon.
I love you Little Joey! He is so sweet and adorable. Chimps always seem so happy, not nasty, mean or acting like a brat! This one is a total sweetheart.
When they are little this might be true, but once they are grown up testosterone kicks in and you better watch out!
Lol. .well thats not always the case.
Fantastic to see his brave journey and that he is doing well and has a best friend to play and roll around with..from that skinny chimp baby to a sturdy little man..wonderful..
Thank you for saving his life!
Why do all good things have to come to an end? This was one of the most heartwarming set of videos i've seen! Thank you so much for sharing longer ones. They were fantastic. From the very first day with Thalita, from the way she held him stradling her arm like his own mother would, to the gentle tummy rubs. You just knew he was in great loving care. He was so tiny but had good lungs!! His little cry got me hooked! As they grow older, they're not as vocal. Unless somethings going on that's threatening, a disaggrement, a snake etc...they mainly communicate through body language, eyes or softer grunts. I don't wish anything to happen to them of course, i just wish they would't stop vocalizing. It must be for the troops safety. I love all there names starting with little and our star "Little Joey!" I've always thought they stayed smaller longer and kept their baby faces. I just love 'em to bits and wish their vocal chords would allow them to speak. Can you imagine the tales they could tell us!!!! Thanks again! I love that whole sweet 'LITTLE" family (pun intended)Theyre all darlings!!🐵💜👍💙✌
Thank you for your very kind comments. We're so pleased that you're enjoying the videos. You might also enjoy our podcast, Talking Apes! Check out talkingapes.org
Thanks again :)
Ow there’s a mom who loves her baby I am so glad he doing so well
She must be a truly loving mommy chimp. I don't think most would have accepted him back after his absence with humans. I'm happy for him.
Thank you so much for watching and we're glad you enjoyed the video.
This is beautiful. Funny how the roll of animal and human have changed
Thank you so much for all that you and your colleagues too! I would LOVE to find a way (physically) to help you in your efforts to rescue and raise chimpanzees of all ages! I have always felt that I have a calling to help animals throughout my life and have rescued 30-40 cats and dogs in and around my community but have never been able to foster any of them. I have been thinking a lot about the much bigger picture and would love to help with chimpanzees here in the United States. Hopefully I will find my calling soon! I hope you have a blessed day! Love from Texas ♥️🤠🌴
He sure is a lucky little guy to have such a wonderful momma and a dedicated team of professionals looking after him and his best interests.
Baby Joey story is very beautiful and we wish Joey a beautiful life and stay happy with the family
Thank you so much for sharing this update! Little Joey’s story just captured my heart when he was a tiny, sickly infant. I’ve watched it over and over again. I’m absolutely thrilled to see this follow-up and see what a healthy adorable little chimp he is now! Thank you again!
Joey is so adorable you all took so good care for the little guy
Joey is even more adorable now as a youngster than he was as a newborn, if that's even possible. What a precious little boy. And what a pair of ears:). Blessings to all the Chimfunshi animals and wonderful staff. You are certainly making a difference in the lives of these marvelous creatures and hopefully in the future of their species' survival. Kudos!
I’m not sure, the eyes look like a demon to me.
@@painful-Jay What? How Cute must your Demons be? 😂
Well of course, you do know that Demons doesn’t exist, but cute LJ does
This is one of my favorite chimp stories! LJ so very precious & I'm so happy he got to go back to mom ❤ I wish I lived in a place where I could hand rear a baby chimp until the baby could go back to mom lol. I've always wanted to do that. I would love to see how LJ is doing today & how much he's grown
A wonderful ending to a wonderful story. Go Joey go. Love to his mom and all the chimpanzees 🧡💛💚🤎🖤🤍
I hope this isn’t the ending. Would like to see more of them.
I shouldn't have used the word ending . I too would like to see more .🤩
Subbed. I love chimps, gorillas, orangutans, bonobos, all wonderful great apes
He is so adorable 😍😍😍
I couldnt be more thrilled. The world needs more people like you!!
Such a joy to see this! I'd been wondering how Little Joey was doing!
I can’t believe she would have starved her baby cause she couldn’t wean her other child that looked a bit too big to be nursing still. Thank you for saving him! He was an adorable chimp baby! The cutest I’ve ever seen!
Exactly! It looks so wrong to have an adolescent still nursing and then consuming all the milk that the baby needs.
Thank you for taking such good care of him. He looks so happy and contented.
Being a primate veterinarian seems like such an interesting job! Bravo to the vets and caretakers for looking after the chimps
Yes! Fascinating, but an extremely hard job. Such amazing people. Thank you for watching.

You didn't miss much. They don't know the difference between apes and monkeys.
@@1313jerry1313 How are you making that assumption? There's nothing to indicate that they think Little Joey is a monkey or don't know the difference.
@@1313jerry1313 always one butt hurt crybaby in the comments and that would be you??? No one is making you watch🙄
Finally an update👍 Thank You!
Little Joey is still adorable😍

I have followed the story of little Joey for several months and I think you guys are wonderful and have done an excellent job at helping to save this baby. I'm so happy to say that he's been back with his mother. Little Jane really is his real mother correct? I am absolutely addicted to watching u tune videos of all types of primates. I started with marques and have moved onto chimps ,gorillas, orangutans, pets well as rescued, and wild troops as well.keep up the good work.any suggestions on videos or areas or subjects on primates for me to watch and learn about them?

Hi Gerry ! what a pleasure to see the story of Little joey... I don't know if you remember me but I was in Chimfunshi when Baby little joey was saved by Thalita....
Great video! Very well done.

Little Joey, the miracle baby! Beautiful story! ❤
Thank you so much for watching and for your love of apes!
My heart was in my mouth watching joey...so happy he is ok
The little guy has went through some battles. He has been blessed by God to just be living. His mom has loved and cared for him greater then humans could.
By science you mean?
He would have had a zero percent chance of surviving in the wild.
@@joshuatraffanstedt2695 seriously dude, chill and don't have such a fragile ego over someone's beliefs while they're being unproblematic.
These are so dear and cute.
Baby chimps & orangutans are the cutest!
Extremely dangerous as adults but what fascinating animals.
Servicarrider, We agree! Which is why we advocate and work towards greater protection for their natural habitats (free from human encroachment) and are so vehemently against the illegal pet trade.

@@pommiebears That's so kind of you! Thank you and wishing you happy and safe holidays as well!
@@carolinawestern3875 So what you're saying is....they should have left Joey as a newborn to fend for himself without professional intervention? How about we just kill all the newborn chimps....wipe-out the entire species... thus, not having to worry about future attacks on children and adults? Get real....if it weren't for man destroying much/most of their natural habitat forcing groups to live in close proximity to one another...chimps might not be so darn aggressive out of anxiety and frustration. Think about that. It's man who will bring their demise.
So nice video thank you
Yay Little Joey my absolutely favorite little fighter!! He has overcome so much and thrived thanks to all the TLC!! Thank you for his update!!!

Little Joey would never become big Joey if it were around me.
Buona vita a chi li ama e li protegge!
Coming out of anesthesia he look like he was drunk bless his little heart
