🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏 this!!! I've literally had people say u need to beat that kids a$$.. ummm no!! My child is struggling y would I hit him.. I can't stand when parents with neurotypical children give unsolicited advice I've even had someone try to shame me for having a backpack tether on him becuz he at that time he didn't understand that roads were dangerous as much as we would express it to him n let him see how fast cars go n I had one person say have u ever sat him down n talked to him about that... 😤😂 gee I never thought of that😤 ugh so annoying I've even had a mom of 2 autistic children 1 of which is non verbal n shamed me for having a book bag tether for him n says maybe u should use the wrist tethers but at that time my son was full force darting for the road n the book bag is a bit more sturdy n just like u said u can pull them back literally saving their life! So idc people can say what they want at the end of the day my son is safe becuz of that bookbag n also he's able to have a lil independence if he doesn't want to hold our hand or slips our hand everything is good n he's safe ❤️🙌 n honestly I couldn't believe another parent with autistic children who also has a lot of other disabilities bashing me for keeping my child safe I do all the things I do to help my child n keep him safe also I hate when we get stairs at the store n then OH SHE NEEDS TO SPANK HIS BUTT!! IVE LITERALLY WALKED RIGHT UP TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE SAID THAT AND HAVE SAID WOULD U SPANK A CHILD WHO WAS DEAF FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO HEAR U WHEN U CALL THEM SHE REPLIED NO I SAID WELL THEN Y WOULD I SPANK MY SON WHOS AUTISIC WHEN HES HAVING A SENSORY OVERLOAD.... SHE SAYS OH IM SO SORRY I HAD NO IDEA HE WAS AUTISIC HE LOOKS SO NORMAL 😤😤😤😤😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬 HE IS NORMAL HE JUST HAS AUTISM TH I CANT STAND PEOPLE THAT ACT THIS WAY ITS SO UNACCEPTABLE I delt with this stigma my whole life becuz I had severe pain from a young child n got told I was fine etc then found out I had a uncured rare brain malformation called CHIARI n that was the reason for all the issues I was having.. Ive even had Drs tell me u look fine u look like a healthy 33 yr old but when he seen my scans he realized I'm a very I'll woman with my malformation alone not to mention all the other disabilities I have so honestly my biggest goal is to teach people to not judge people by how they look becuz some people have told me I hide my pain and discomfort very well n they would never know I was disabled or in pain but it's becuz I've learned to hide these things to seem more normal when in reality I was in agony n I feel with autisic children they tend to do the same like when ur son was hiding his chewing.. also I love how open u r becuz sometimes we only see the good side not the difficult side of autism

I personally have been diagnosed to be on a higher side of the autistic spectrum however, this used to be stuff that I had to do when I was younger currently I’m 16 don’t have to do it much. The only thing that I really do now is grind my teeth and chew gum which I wonder if that would work for your children chewing gum when they get a little older alongside this, I’m learning a little bit more with people that have a more severe version of autism and I do find it interesting since I study into that stuff so I know what to look out for and how to help those people around me that are struggling with it or something similar to it I personally have impulse control, ADHD ,generalize, anxiety, learning disability, and depression.

Watching this video reminds me of back when I was in grade school. I have some memories of chewing on things and even occasionally trying to bite some classmates if I was in a bad mood (especially in the first two or three grades) when my permanent teeth were coming in. My biting and chewing almost entirely stopped (as I recall) when my permanent teeth were all the way in.
I was born very prematurely and there were some neurological effects that effected social and emotional development (especially early on). Doctors that I have talked to are not sure if my condition is part of the spectrum, but there is some family history of it so it is possible.
Back to the subject of biting and teething:From what I recall when I was younger I found that eating something cold could sometimes help with gum discomfort from teeth coming in. This could be ice cream, sherbet/sorbet, a popsicle, or even something like a frozen banana (chocolate covered or otherwise). My parents were often hesitant to give me anything like this because they were worried about possibly rewarding bad behavior. Therefore, if my behavior was unusually uncontrolled I would be put in timeout for a short time and then given something cold to eat.
Regarding iPads and chewing: A friend of a friend of mine has a grandson who is about a year younger than Alistair and he has speech and some other delays (possibly as a result of autism (from what I have been told)) and he is chewing a lot right now. No one knows why since he still has all of his baby teeth. Like Alistair, he also has an iPad but the screen is still intact because the iPad has a case on it that looks like an otter box but it is made by a different company. The case also protects his iPad(at least so far) if he drops of throws it. His case has bite marks on it, but so far his iPad is fine. I don’t know what kind of case it is, but Best Buy, the Apple Store, or Amazon might have something like it. Also, one of these sites might sell screen protectors for a reasonable cost $40 to $50 (or less) that are similar to the glass screen protectors that are available for iPhones. You might want to check some of your local cell phone stores to find out if they might have a case and/or a screen protector that is suitable.

Don't let others put you down for being great parents. People think they know something about everything and most people do not. I have worked with members of the special needs community for 22 years, with many years with folks on the spectrum. The chew toys are often soothing for them. Your son is not the only one by any means. I know teenagers who use them to relive stress and anxiety. It's amazing how much these things help.

He has left bite marks and bruises on his siblings. He also does it at school. We give him chewy toys and visuals to help him understand he can't do it. One tip, you can get a waist stretchy tool and attach the chewy so it's not always on the neck, as this can be annoying. My son likes the one on his waist so he can bite when needed. It really helps him self-regulate and take it with us when we travel.

Biting is oral sensory-seeking behavior to feel in control or calm when feeling frustrated/angry and nervous even to calm oneself. Pending on Alister's feelings and what level of chewier he is. I have an oral pendant and I additionally have a handled vibrator from Amazon. Totally is up to your family as you said from the video Alister was masking behind his parents potentially biting into things he doesn't know are not meant to be bitting into like the iPad an example not exactly to bite into

Hello autism family!! Your advice and support has helped me a lot recently and so I’d like to return the favour. Be careful of the chew toys on Amazon. I’ve tried a few brands and found that once they start to deteriorate then very small pieces come off that get stuck in your teeth. some bits break off and are too small for me to notice and I accidentally swallow them. I’ve stopped buying from Amazon and now buy from sensooli. They have a huge range and you can filter on items that are for strong biters. I got a ball necklace and a tire bracelet and I’m yet to make a mark on them.
I decided to get chew toys when I chewed a wine glass and it broke!! Luckily I wasn’t hurt. When I was young I bit every piece of furniture my parents had along with window sills, pens, toys, clothes.
I’ve just started using my chew toys in public and at work and had no problems so far. Hope Alastair finds something he likes!

I actually bought this exact model because I have been struggling all my life with biting… I have been destroying everything that is in plastic. A pen never last more than a day. Many times, I had ink spilled on my clothes! I chipped a lot of my teeth and always feel frustrated at myself after, and cannot stop. It definitely feels weird to need this, but it helps. Fun fact, I destroyed these toys as well 😅

Thanks for sharing that information. Recently I saw a man (whom I'll call George for privacy) around my age having lots of sensory issues and biting his arm. Not only it frightened me but I felt bad for him because he was struggling with worship music due to loud noise in the church. I wanted to help but I couldn't because his brother/cousin was there but he didn't do anything he just sat there in the service ignoring George. A part of me still wanted to help George I went online looking for ways to help him to stop biting his arm. Then I saw your video it did provided a lot of information that I needed. I'll try to get that sensory necklace for George and try to offer help to him but I'll ask his brother/relative first if it's okay. I know im just a stranger to everyone but I still want help people like George I'm willing to try.

Thank you for this video. Both of my son's are on the spectrum and my oldest (4yo) has just started biting himself & anything he can really when he's upset. His therapist suggested these exact chew toys so we got them for Christmas. He doesn't really show interest in it so far but I think his biggest turn off is the necklace part. He doesn't like it one and wants to carry it but then he leaves it places. The younger one (2yo) has started to bite us when he's angry. So far just me, my husband and his brother (he also pulls hair) but I've been trying to redirect him to something else. He chews on his more than his brother but I'm going to keep working with both of them. They both put everything in their mouths so having something safe to chew on when needed will be helpful.
We also will be looking into a harness for our youngest since he too is a runner. But thank you so much for sharing your experiences and family with us.

Thanks for posting this video. It’s really relatable! I’ve had a chewing problem since as long as I remember. Most of the time I am not aware I’m doing it. I’ll look down and my favourite clothes will be soaking wet with holes in them, or my mouth will be filled with pen ink or pencil wood. I often have a really strong impulse to bite others and used to climb on and bite my mum constantly when I was under 10. I also used to bite my arms and hands to the point of tearing skin. but I’ve got better at stopping myself from doing both as I’ve gotten older. I’ve tried chew toys but I’m really sensitive to textures like rubber and I’ve cracked my teeth on harder objects. I have to say though, remote controls are the best bites I’ve ever had xD.

You mentioned harnesses and I just wanted to positively comment on that. I am not autistic but my parents used a harness on me when I was a kid when we were out and about. I can just about remember it and I loved it. I felt safe cause I knew where mum and dad were (at the end of the lead), while also giving me a bit of independence as I was able to walk a little distance away but not so far that I could get lost.
.....Also it was fun to run and to pull on the lead suddenly at times, as a joke, surprising my dad and taking him for a walk a little bit. :D
Harnesses are a good and useful thing. No parent should be judged for using them, especially if they keep your kid safe. Boo to the judgy people out there!

A lot of times, I chew too, but it would normally be on the zippers on my pajamas and the paint would chip and the zipper would be gray. I hope soon I can get a chew toy that a lot of people would call “chewelery”. I’m glad Alistair got a toy to help with his needs and hope there’ll be more to come.

These videos are extremely helpful, and I applaud you for putting them out there for people to learn from. In our situation, with our son (6), he just started with chewing on objects with more frequency in the last 6 months. Mainly he likes paper-based or rope-based materials such as tissues, cardboard, blankets that are made of stringy material...etc. He does not like chew toys - unfortunately, we did try the ones you demonstrated in the video as well as many others. I think the silicone isn't the texture that he is looking for. I talked to his feeding specialist / speech and OT therapists about this and they suggested vibrating toothbrushes/toys for longer periods of time during the normal brushing time. However, this has not worked for him either. Another suggestion, was to consider body brushing therapy. I am not sure how realistic the brushing is, and I am concerned about introducing something that is not feasible to maintain on the daily and especially not feasible longer term.
Any other suggestions to try? We welcome advice - this is a tough situation.

My daughter is an undiagnosed autistic, and we have used a backpack harness for years with her because she will also run into traffic, I hold her hand while she wears it so people don't stare at me like as if I'm treating her like an animal. The harness has taught her to stay with me and to hold my hand, but once the harness is off, she takes off. She's 6, and we are having a really hard time with her autism. She pulls her hair out and chews on everything, I will be buying some chew toys now that I know about them, thanks to you guys. She doesn't talk either, so it's really a struggle every day. I hope to learn more from you guys and your experiences

Great video for education!! My autistic friend had a chew toy. I wonder if you could make a video about stimming in non autistic people. Me, probably not autistic has a lot of weird and maybe not really popular and socially accepted stims. I chest punch every time I sit I must like bang my knees together often I do it all the time when I sit. And I’m 16 years having absolutely no problems with patience or siting still over all but I do this, banging my knees together and get weird looks. Sometimes I do it when I’m standing or walking too and it is just to make my self comfortable. I want people to understand that stims can appear in non autistic people ( no offense to autistic people I love em )

I use those Lego necklaces, too for my Autism. After 2 weeks or so of pretty constant chewing, little bits of the silicone will come off. I have swallowed a few (not on purpose) crumbles of the Lego in the past. After a while, it may be a choking hazard for Alistair. Every so often, I highly recommend checking his necklaces to make sure they are not in poor shape.

I love chewies, I have lost the ones I had but it does help keep me from chewing my nails. I’ve also always been the person who if I’m wearing a necklace, in the mouth it goes…. I don’t have an autism diagnosis but I am getting evaluated soon.
I worked with a young girl with Autism at one point who had to wear leather arm pads (kind of like old time bracers) because she would bite herself so hard she would break skin. There were so many bite marks in those things… I’m glad her parents were able to figure out some way to allow her to fill that biting need without hurting herself.

it might be masking, yet it also could be like for example stimming. one goes another comes back. just recycling habbits in times of different ages and needs. i know i go trough fases of biting and non biting. just to let you know there are softer and harder chewtoys so for every kinda chew there is a durable option. so if ever he seems to wanna bite more or harder things a harder one might be an option to look into.

Right around the time I began to lose my interest in chewing and biting I began to develop an interest in computer programming concepts and binary numbers. I remember that I especially liked the concepts of bits and bytes (and nibbles (sometimes spelled nybbles)). Python is one computer language that can be learned at almost any age after developing some reading skills. It is much easier than C or C++ and a good starting point for learning basic programming concepts. Python is available for free for PC,Macintosh,Linux, and even iPhones and iPads (and I would assume Android).
I began to learn about how computers work internally starting at age ten. That’s also how old I was when I started learning some basic programming concepts (back in the 1980s in BASIC).
I found that my intellectual development didn’t really begin (in any significant way) until I learned about how computers work and how to program them. It can be a good hands-on application of math skills at a grade-appropriate level. I assume that Alistair is learning addition and probably some subtraction (given his age).
It is still necessary to do addition and subtraction by hand (since there is no other way to learn carrying and borrowing) but an interactive Python interpreter (on an iPad for example) can be a good way to check one’s work on math problems at all levels. a-Shell and Carnets are both free iPad apps that include an interactive Python interpreter. Some people also use iSH (which is another free command-line app for iPad). a-Shell is also a good app for learning basic command-line and Linux concepts on an iPad without having to buy a separate computer.
If he becomes as interested in computers as I am you will need to make sure (at least early on) that he also plays outside and gets plenty of exercise and remembers to stop and eat regularly, etc. It can be easy to get too wrapped up in an activity and forget these things.

My son has gone through a few iPad and a phone. He tends to bite things in frustration. At first we thought he was just being really bad, but realised that it was a snap reaction. I give him bits of paper to tear now when he starts a meltdown to try to help him stim through it. Doesn't always work though.
