  • The day of reckoning has arrived - at last, it is time to review perhaps the most controversial show in the Gundam pantheon: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, the baffling, confounding, infuriating, utterly fascinating sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. Set two years later with both new and returning characters, Destiny tries to be two different, contradictory shows at once: a challenging sequel questioning the assumptions and characters from the original, a la Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and a straight-up sequel to SEED - Gundam SEED: Here We Go Again - and in the shuffle, somehow makes us hate the entire returning cast even while it buries and repeatedly does dirty its interesting new characters. The result is one of the most inept sequel stories ever told - but undeniably one of the most compelling to talk about.
Enjoy, and come back next time as Gundam revisits its canonical sequel series with Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation film trilogy!

Yes. Kira's dialogue is super vapid. I couldnt tell you what exactly he wanted or stood for. Except that Rey claims that Kira wanted the future.

I feel like Stargazer is a very underrated bright spot that came out of Destiny. The idea of a Gundam that is created for the sake of space exploration and scientific discovery feels like a revolutionary step forward for the whole series, completely redefining what a Gundam is. It something I hoped the series that came after would’ve carried on with.
I wish you guys had covered it.
It felt like a nice evolution of some of the ideas Turn A introduced with the focus on domestic use of MS.

When you did the Seed review I was thinking it was the gundam shoe I hated. But as I was listening I was remembering I actually loved seed and didn't understand why I was starting the podcast episode believing I hated the show. Than at the end I rembered Destiny was a thing and this was what I hated

The premise of Destiny is one of the most brilliant I’ve ever seen for an anime sequel. It’s actually incredible how many great building blocks are in the conceptual part of Destiny and how much it fails to build anything meaningful with it.

The government of Orb is made more clear in the Astray manga which came out before Destiny, and it is consistent with the show although completely unexplained. Orb is ruled by five royal families that vote in a single leader amongst themselves. The weird guy she is pressured to marry is one from one of the five families and Cagali is from another. Then the lead antagonist of the first Astray manga is from another. And I think a fourth family was shown in another Astray manga.

this got me laughing! I generally dislike hearing destiny review cause a lot of times they just insult it without weighing that there are good things and bad things too it but I enjoyed listening to this so much!
You pointed out Meer dying from a single shot while three people there survived explosions had me laughing! it never occurred to me how hilarious that was. I generally always just laughed at that seen because Meer gets shot but like somehow swirls and falls in the most graceful manner. Like Idk man, it's funny.
Few characters I don't fully agree. Cagalli, yes she was muddled in season 2, but it does make sense given she has no experience ruling. She spoke to Athrun about not wanting to be laughed at again which meant she's been ridiculed and joked on as a ruler by the other higher ups. That affects her confidence a lot. her arc would be really good if they just proof read it enough and edit things to make it swifter and cleaner.
I do agree that Athrun is being dumb in season 2 but his character definitely did not start from square one in destiny. If you watch the last episodes of seed before the big fight happens, Athrun tells Cagalli how he feels so powerless even though we know he can fight and has the justice. To me I think Athrun's arc never really finished in season 1. He wasn't like Kira where at the end, everything comes full circle. Athrun still had insecurities about himself even though he was fighting in a side he believed in. So yeah, my take on Athrun.
To me, Mu is truly dead in seed. Neo is a clone and he probably fought in gang fights before he joined the army that's where his scars come from lol
It makes me sad that destiny isn't as good as we all hoped it to be cause I love Seed, I love the characters but the story definitely suffered from time constraints and trying to ride the seed popularity. You can tell so many plots points or ideas getting shoved away midway the series and it's just sad.
One example was when Ramius and Waltfeld were living together and waltfeld invites Ramius to live with them in plants if Orb chooses to side with the naturals. You could see their growing relationship potentially going romantic but no Neo shows up and when he does it was like Ramius and Waltfeld never lived together, never talked, just nothing.
Sigh but I did enjoy your discussion. Like how the burden is lifted from your shoulders I too feel a bit lighter hearing you rant and rave at the same time.

Gundam SEED Destiny is a show I can't bring myself to completely hate, as you two seem to do. It was a show that had an intriguing premise, which completely failed to live up to that premise. It had my favorite characters in SEED, Athrun and Kira, back in action.
Part of me likes what they did with Kira in SEED Destiny; in SEED, Kira's arc leads him to fight for peace. However, in SEED Destiny, he has to realize that peace at any price is not what he truly believes in. However, his absolute perfection and emotionlessness annoyed me to hell. Kira in Destiny is akin to a god amongst men, the so-called "Ultimate Coordinator." What does he do with this power? He raises orphans with his GF/ wife (not entirely sure) until she's nearly murdered by someone who's never actually revealed. Then, he goes around the world to act as a guardian of what is just and what is right, and insodoing gets people killed. Athrun felt like the only character in Destiny which was only brutally maimed and not slaughtered to me, no doubt thanks to Akira Ishida's still wonderful performace. I completely disagree about the MS designs. I love a good chunk of the designs in Destiny, and theres only one or two dislike.

Seed destiny.... yeah I'm obsessed with the show since I watched it when I was a not very impressionable teen (yet this left an impression on me).
To sum up how I feel about it: mediocre Gundam show after a pretty decent SEED. starts amazing, has great character potential and Concepts (Berlin Crisis and lasering 3 PLANTS is still a wtf moves to this day) but man what a disappointing ending.... why is SOandSO alive!? How did they live through that! It cheapens development from previous show and was already concluded!
The movie.... I don't have so much hope for it now that we are years far away.... did kingdom hearts 3 really need to be that long of a wait? Many say it was a lousy sequel to the entry and the magic is lost (cause many grew old for the time)
