I gave up alcohol in August of 2019, and it's the best thing I've ever done for myself. The sad reality is a significant portion of the general public are addicted to alcohol. I think more than anyone would care to admit. It's a fact that alcohol is poison for your body. Looking back on my years of drinking, I can confidently say alcohol did nothing to improve my life, but did many things to make my life worse.

I gave up alcohol on New Year's Day this year (Monday 1st January 2018) because I decided to do it for a month as well, at first I wasn't promising on giving up the poison completely, but after 30 days I felt so fantastic that I decided not to go back to and I haven't, I've been sober ever since. :)

I gave up drinking 3.5 years ago and cannot imagine going back ever again. I drank every single day for 30 years and smoked ciggs as well. Gave them both up at the same time. I truly believe it was by the grace of God that it happened so easily and naturally. I didn't have any withdrawals either. It's the best feeling in the world to not be controlled by an addiction and to be in control of your own life.

Sorry but I really don't understand drinkers who say this. If this is the case, how hard could it be to stop? I have mental issues. Alcohol often helps me with my mood and motivation, sometimes of course it makes it worse. Alcohol doesn't cause issues in my life that I didn't have before which is why the negative points are tolerable to me and my circumstances.

Not only this they are mentally trapped. Can't picture life without the substance. Compare it to someone who's a victim of an abusive relationship who knows they're being abused yet they stay with that person. We may look at that person and say "why don't they just walk away and the problems will stop" but to that victim they can't picture a life without the person. Even if they know logically that person is hurting them. That's the same mentality as a addict. Unless your in that place its hard to imagine why someone doesn't just find it easy to stop the very thing that's hurting them. It completely brainwashes the addict. That's why some addicts commit suicide. Can't put up with destruction of the substance yet they can't picture a life without it. I've not had a drink since Dec. 15 2021. In 7 years there were probably one 5 or 6 days that I didn't drink. Every day was drinking when I got home from work until I went to sleep, or on weekends I would start late in the morning and go all day. I was in good shape and functioning, but I was gaining weight, and just total mess. Since I've stopped, I feel better, sleep much better, I used to always be hot, not anymore, clearer mind, more creative, and in hindsight, a fog has lifted. I feel great and can't wait to make it to day 30. I do not intend to stop drinking entirely, but I want to gain control. Right now I don't trust myself to drink. I believe I will latch onto the feeling of getting a buzz again and not want to stop. So, for now, I need to stay away. Thank you, all.

From Kentucky, USA...I have been an intermittent drinker for my entire life, now age 73. The past few years I have begun to drink incrementally more, at times just sitting down with a bottle at the end of a day, cocktail hour starting earlier all the while. I wondered if I fit the definition of an alcoholic since I didn't feel any kind of physical compulsions, just wanted to drink. Short story, I just quit about two months back. It was dropping a bad habit, not breaking an addiction. I think. Anyway, I think I like not drinking, and I am not robbed of my fast diminishing time here. Let's hope my liver forgives me.

I have the tollerence to say no to a drink now and think to my self is it worth it having a drink , I'm not going to stop completely but I'm only having a drink when I feel it's worth it. so yes anyone who wants to feel better and loose some weight stop drinking for a month you will see the benefits

I gave up alcohol at the age of 19 having experienced just once the effects of a hangover. I hated the feeling of being drunk, which is why, 41 years later, I can look back and say in all honesty my life has been healthy and filled with joy. Whenever offered alcohol, I politely refuse as it’s not something I need. Some occasionally think of this of “You’re just being boring’… but in reality I’m naturally outgoing and always the one that lights up the room. In a nutshell, alcohol to me seems more of a ‘social prop’ and much like the sharing and smoking of cigarettes… (something else I don’t do) it’s a mechanism thought of to promote human interaction. In my view, however, being social and interacting joyfully with others is just as easy without these social props. It’s all in the mind.

I’ve been a heavy drinker since my mid teens…predominantly beer but replaced by red wine in last decade. It’s my go to drink. In recent years, wine o’o’clock became a mantra…and it became earlier in the day. I regularly drank a bottle a day sometimes shored up with a trip to the pub for beer. So, I’m doing dry February ( because I’m a non conformist loud mouth) and thought it would be a lot harder. 12 days in and I feel…fine. No tremors, no irritability, no desire/ need to drink alcohol. It’s funny…I expected it to be very difficult and it isn’t. I expected to fail and have to face the truth that I’m an alcoholic and would need months in rehab to cure me. Truth is, at this moment, I don’t want alcohol…my sleep is deeper, I’m waking more refreshed and energised, weight is dropping off (7lbs in 12 days) and I don’t miss it. I realised after day 3 that I was regularly looking for that glass of wine by my chair. Habit, not full blown addiction. I have now had a week where I have barely thought about alcohol now my habit has been broken. So…my point is, I have been a heavy drinker for 40 years. I didn’t need parties or special occasions to get pissed, I drank whenever I felt like it. Yes…I’ve only been dry 12 days and not faced a life trauma in that time that might encourage me to hit the bottle. What I would say is don’t let fear of failure hold you back. I quit drinking (and cigs and weed) on July 10th 2021 with the goal of making it to this year without then. I didn’t drink or get high every single day but it was very regular. I made it and still haven’t done any. Now I feel like I have finally beaten those addiction and feel like I have regained control over myself. I had tried moderation and trying to just drink once or twice a month which I could do for a bit but then would just escalate and I’d fall back into a long period of getting drunk or high or both almost every day. Sure getting drunk or high was fun and a nice way to escape and I miss it a little sometimes but overall I am far happier now, without a doubt quitting these bad habits is one of the best things I’ve ever done

@@tonyteunis1640 I love weed and I think the plant has many medicinal benefits. But for me it was a bad habit. As with booze I felt sick of depending on it for pleasure/relaxation and to go with certain activities. I would wanna be high just to watch a movie etc. Once I was in a phase of doing it even strong weed would where off after about an hour, hour and half tops and personally I'm the type that if I have a joint in the morning I won't want to do shit that day and just wanna keep smoking every couple hours. It went hand in hand with drinking and I'd often drink a few pints before a joint just to intensify the high. Plus I'm all about organic/natural stuff these days and that fact that weed is so engineered and potentially sprayed with pesticide is a major off-put to me. I would love to grow the original plant or something close one day and take it in edible form but that's not feasible rn and I think it is better for me to cut it completely anyway. Obviously it isn't as bad as cigs but inhaling smoke deep into your lounges regularly definitely isn't healthy. I don't rule out smoking weed or drinking occasionally in the future, but I need to seriously fix my relationship with them and find better habits for myself first.

@@SamJamwich1 I think it’s cool you have your head screwed on straight and know your priorities. Personally, when I quit drinking my appetite for weed went way down. I even gave it up completely between 2012 and 2017. Now with bud as strong as it currently is, I only want a toke or two to begin the day and that’s enough. If I’m facing a really busy day or demanding driving, I’ll skip it all together. I think people have to be careful with modern weed cuz it can make a person a mindless zombie pretty quick. I haven’t smoked a joint in over 20 years and I agree any smoke in the lungs isn’t very healthy, one of the reasons I limit my smoking. And to think I used to smoke a pack of cigs a day when I was an avid skier in Tahoe, always drunk of course!

I feel terrible since giving up booze. It's been quite a few years now and it sucks. If I didn't have a kid I'd leave my partner simply to start drinking again. I was functional. Always working. Never missed a day of work. Never drunk at work, of course. Never drunk driving. Never angry and fighting. I managed my money and affairs well. I ate well and was strong and healthy. I was an active participant in my friends and family member's lives. And I really enjoyed my hobbies and passive pastimes.
All the hype didn't happen. I have no more energy. My health is exactly the same. Rather than improve, my relationships have mostly dwindled away. I'm very rarely happy. I don't read anymore. I used to read literature. Hundreds of books. I haven't read a book in five years. I don't watch movies anymore. I get ten minutes in. That's it. I don't play instruments anymore, which was my biggest joy. I buy records but only out of habit. I listen to them once or twice then forget about them. No interest.
I'm not depressed. But my life is an insufferable bore. I look forward to going to bed as I'm staggering to the toilet to take a piss first thing after getting up. I now go to bed at 7:30.
Every now and then I have the opportunity to drink. Man, I come alive. I'll be cooking with music playing. Tuning up the guitar. Dancing about. Even laughing out loud at nothing. Simply from feeling joy. I start to stand up straight and realize there's a huge hump now in my upper spine from slumping all the time. I stretch it out over the evening and literally grow an inch. I stay up listening to LPs until 2 or 3 o'clock and go to bed feeling happy. Smiling.
Good luck. It seems like most people's lives vastly improve when they jump up on the wagon. Mine'll come good, I'm sure. These thing s take time.

@@703kwood703. Yes I do, Kevin. I'm not trying to discourage anybody from trying to get sober. It's an extremely difficult thing to do for most people.
Here's a tip if you're wanting to sober up. From anything. I even look at eating healthily this way.
If you're "on the wagon" you're sober. Or eating right.
When I drink or my eating habits start to veer towards unhealthy foods, rather than picturing myself standing there with a bottle of booze in my hand waving at the wagon as it trundles towards the horizon, I picture myself running beside the wagon. The goal is to jump straight back on as soon as I can.
Here's a little ray of hope too. It gets easier to stay sober the longer you stay sober.
Here's a warning. If you fall back into habitually drinking even after a few years of sobriety you are back to the original struggle to sober up. It took me about 5 years of trying to sober up before I succeeded.
When I started drinking again it was for the pleasure of it. I had want and also opportunity. I started drinking two nights a week. Boy oh boy was it great. ...but then it became 3, then 4, then 5,6,7 evenings a week.
That ol wagon was only a speck in the distance. Maybe even just a mirage.
It was as difficult to sober up this time as it was the last.
You have to be strong. You have to follow what you intellectually believe is right rather than allow you subconscious to guide you to drink.
