- Cindy Clemishire says that Pastor Robert Morris began to sexually abuse her in 1982 when she was 12 and he was 21. Morris went on to found Gateway Church, building it into a megachurch with nine campuses in North Texas. He resigned last month, saying without being specific that he had "inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady." Morris did not respond to multiple interview requests. NBC News' Antonia Hylton reports.

Dear Pastor, a 12 year old girl is a CHILD, not a young lady!
This was the 80’s it was normalized by society back then . I told everyone not one person believed it. Back then no one wanted to get involved and a lot turned their backs even police . They viewed it as a family issue.
Oh honey. This isn’t a thing of the past. Read up on Gracie Solomon of Tennessee. See how the church buried her abuse. Her dad goes to church with the governor and the governor’s wife was the judge in the case! Gracie went to the church for help many times and was told it was a family issue.

Agree!! Even with my son I do the same. We’ve never had anyone in our home that I worry about but you just never know! My son loves when someone stays bc he gets to sleep with mommy and it’s like a vacation night for him since that’s the only other times he sleeps with me.
I don't know which is more vile... The abuser or the lawyer blaming a 12 year old. I am revolted on both fronts. The abuser deserves jail time, the lawyer should be disbarred (I realize revolting defenses are not grounds for discarding but should be.) I am sickened all around.

The statue of limitation is way past. Although, he should pay restitution to her for the abuse and for her pain/suffering/counseling. There is something not right about waiting 40 years to expose it; probably a financial motive behind it.

(he was planning to retire in 2025 anyway) They have acknowledged Clemishire's abuse, and apologized to her for what happened. There is no longer any doubt about the substantive matters in her claim. They ( Gateway) claimed in a second statement issued in late June or early July of this year, that they did not initially know she (Clemishire) was underage when the abuse took place. They said they didn't have all the factual information at the time of their initial statement. Morris has not been charged with a crime as I write this response. That said, Gateway is not defending Robert Morris from a moral standpoint, or denying the substantive facts of Clemishire's claim now.

It happened 20+ years ago. That’s why victims need to speak up sooner so these predators can get the prison time and shame they deserve. Most victims eventually tell anyway, but usually after the statute up.

Look at the Innocence Project. They've helped free innocent people who have been serving decades long prison sentences. If the legal system can get it wrong, so can you.

I think you will find, Robert pulled a fake story to his wife all their married life - i bet she didnt know it was a 12yr old girl, i bet she didnt go to the parents home when they were supposed to have forgiven him. People like Robert Morris know how to manipulate and play with words. Im in Australia, and in the early 2000’s we connected to satellite Christian. Tv and i remeber hearing Robert Morris give a testimony of redemption them. He had to keep that story about the young lady going forever as he lied to his wife and most people in the churches. I also heard one message of recent years where his wife had said to him “are you sure you are telling me everything”? He told her he was. But he wasnt. I wonder if we were a fly on the wall in that household. It is very sad. You tell a lie once and it is easy to confess and repent, but tell a lie over and over and over for years and years and years and the lie becomes a stronghold too big to break the chains. A persons conscience becomes seared and they believe what they have been saying is the truth when it clearly is not.

He’s a multi millionaire and can afford therapy for his trauma. If he truly cared for humans he would have tried to help Cindy with her therapy costs.

As a survivor of molestation at the age of four, that was repeated for years, I can tell you that healing is possible and forgiveness is key to it. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you say it’s okay. It means you let go of the anger and resentment trusting God to heal you and deal with him.

This incident didn't happen in a Church and didn't happen at a Church function and didn't have anything to do with a Church. This incident involved 2 people, not the entire world it happened in her home with her parents in the house.
