- In this video we prepare the $1000 Hilux for it's first start in our possession.
We may have run into a bit of a problem...however we're determined to see if the car will still run and drive!

A mint 1KZT-E will have compression in around the 400-420psi range. The rule of thumb limit for an indirect injection engine like this is 300-350psi as your minimum. Change the diesel filter and usi g the primer button on top the filter pump it until it becomes solid. If the primer is in goid nick this shouldnt take too long at all to fill if the filter is empty. The IKZ has a QGS ( quick glow system) so the light may be on the dash for only 5-6 seconds. Hit the key and it should fire right up with mo missing stumbling etc. If it doesnt start up ok then apart from low compression or all 4 g/plugs are dead theres a high chance the front seal in the injector pump has gone hard. This is also shown if the engine fires up straight away but dies or surges and blows white/blue smoke. The seal is an absolute easy easy thing to replace. Hardest thing is breaking the inj pump loose from the engine simtimes. The 1KZ's also develop a leak from the speed sensor o-ring in the top cover of the pump. Again an easy easy fix, should only take about 15-20min max.

Always loved seeing these rigs on the road in NZ, but don't know too much about them mechanically so will be learning along with you. Love seeing the boys all supporting each other. got a good idea for you: take body off chassis, plonk on top of hilux 2wd yes tab a doesnt fit slot b.
but has been done a few times. and will be unique.
the 1kzte suffers from porous head. thats why they blow head gaskets. doesnt matter how you drive the car.
and the head kit is about a 1000 bucks
I would definitely do this if I wasn’t after a 4wd vehicle! I’ve seen the Low Surf conversion done before and it’s wicked 😍

1KZ engine pretty common for the glow plug tips to snap or crack. If they drop off can get stuck under a valve and if you get lucky they dont. This happened on my dads first Prado and it required the head removal and valve replacement.
I would soak the threads in some good penetrative lubricant and get those changed as soon as possible.
