      I have a set of grapids and they have the loudest freehub I've ever heard. If I'm riding with someone I can't freewheel and talk at the same time because the hub drowns our voices out

    Thanks Nolan! We'll have to buy one of those Topeak bumps to test out. We have a random selection of 7-8 different pumps that we try things on, and they all worked fine with the Grapid's valve length. We'll definitely look into it though, because we know worst nightmare is being at the side of the road and finding out the valve is too short! P.S: I don't dare to show Tom (our community manager) this video. He's anti-tubeless and this is just fuel for his fire. 😆

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před rokem +2

      Oh no! Keep ‘em tubeless ready! Question - to replace a spoke / nipple, do you have to feed a nipple through the valve hole? I’ve seen that on some other wheels. Seems like it could be a challenge

    • @WinspaceBikes
      @WinspaceBikes Před rokem +2

      @@TheBikeSauce Will make a video on how to do that soon. But yes, everything goes through the valve hole. We attach a small piece of steel spoke (1-2cm long) and loosely screw it into a nipple, then use a magnet to feed it through to the spoke hole. Once it comes out, unscrew the 1-2cm "stand-in" spoke and screw in the real spoke.

    I bought the 650b version for may gravel bike. Weak wheelset. After just several use it developed warps on the top edges near the spokes. They replaced the rear wheelset at first but when the front wheelset developed the same warps and so do the replacement, I was told that they cannot replace them anymore. What’s more upsetting is they had me wait for several months!

    I'd leave the valves in as most presta heads are designed to get a purchase of that extra lil thread piece.
    The booster pump will flow slower, but still faster than hand pumping. Seat the beads and let the tire sit dry for a bit to get back some of its shape if freshly unfolded.
    Remove the core just to add the sealant.

  • @paulcang6752
    @paulcang6752 Před rokem +1

    I had a similar issue sitting a panaracer GK SS tire on the Grapids before. It was the most difficult tubeless setup I have done and the only trick that worked was adding tubeless rim tape (2 or 3 layers)

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před rokem +1

      Yea I had that issue on a different set of rims. The extra layer of tubeless tape pretty much always works in my experience. If it doesn't seat first go, I'll usually go straight to adding a layer of tape. In this video, I wanted to see what it would take to seat them without any tape, but kind of a lot of extra work.

    • @nommchompsky
      @nommchompsky Před rokem

      I have Gravelkings on my grapids and the only way I could seat them is to use my hands to force the bead to seat on one side, then use a full size air compressor through the valve stem for the other side. Sealant after the bead is seated or else you're gonna have a bad time. I had G-Ones on before the GKs and they went on like nothing

  • @mazditzo

    it should come with 60 or even 80 mm valve for any “aero/deep” section wheels

  • @hardmtnbiker
    @hardmtnbiker Před rokem +2

    Honestly, I think it was the short tubeless valve for that deep rim was the main issue. Although I enjoyed seeing your methods to resolve this problem. Panaracer tires are usually a breeze to set up and personally I just use a booster pump on all my set ups with various wheels and tires. I definitely also always mount tires without levers at all cost and use soapy water. Installing a tube first and leaving one side beaded is a good one. I’ll try that on one of my stubborn set ups.

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před rokem +4

      For sure. I think they should supply longer valves. I never use a lever to install a tire either. Had to use a few tricks for this setup though

    • @hardmtnbiker
      @hardmtnbiker Před rokem +2

      @@TheBikeSauce another method I use with our hot 🥵 So Cal weather is let my tires lay is the sun and soften up before mounting. This really helps with my thick casing tires.

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před rokem +1

      Nice. Yea I think these gravelkings were tough bc they’ve been sitting in a box for a year with a bunch of dried sealant still on them. New, they were easier to seat

      I am interested in this exact rim with Rene Herse (Compass) 38c tires.
      Installing a layer or two of tubeless tape would make them seat even with a regular floor pump without tricks. Also safer because the tire is less likely to come off and fix/pump on the road if needed.

    So the valve is not long enough, and not being able to seat with a pressure pump, is not good.
    Hopefully the problem with seating the tyre was the tyre.
    Need a longer valve then.
    I also don’t like, the ‘adventure ready - tubeless ready’ white stickers, it makes the wheels looks cheap and tacky 🤔

    Do you think carbon has a lifespan? Most carbon stuff broke for me . I ride 10 to 15 k yearly. About year 4 stuff breaks. So much now I won't use anything carbon. Except the Dura Ace wheels sparingly. I rife mostly gravel way off pavement. Need bulletproof. Hunt Gravel wheels have been great for over a year

    • @TheBikeSauce
      @TheBikeSauce  Před rokem

      Whole can of worms here. There's no published shelf life for carbon, and as far as I know, you can ride them until they are damaged. Manufacturing processes differ from brand to brand, and of course people are paranoid about sudden catastrophic failure as opposed to yielding (metal). Anecdotal reports indicate that there's no reason a well-taken care of set of carbon wheels can't last 10's of thousands of miles or more. It comes down to the level of 'risk' one is willing to take. Personally, I'm much more concerned about my carbon full suspension mtb frame breaking in a hard crash than a set of carbon gravel rims randomly exploding for no reason.
