    Great video bro! Two things caught my attention, 1.) the yard sign was hilarious, while also being effective in stopping dumb questions from passer byers. 2.) the cost of the mats. Dude, you are dedicated to the process. Kudos to you. I definitely appreciate your attention to detail and high quality approach to this project. Hope the results are great and up to your standards because you’ve absolutely put in the work. I look forward to seeing the end product. Cheers bro 👍🏻

      Honestly man, I've had more people say something about that sign than I would've ever imagined. People stop, read it, and walk away laughing every time. Well worth the money to buy that sign lol. And yes, not one single person has asked me what I'm doing with the lawn. Which is nice not having to repeat myself.
      As to the money and prep, I'm trying to do everything as well as I can. I've been living by the motto "failure is not an option" with this whole renovation. Only thing I'm worried about at this point is Poa. Let's hope there isn't any or very much at least. Fingers crossed.

    I just recently bought another house with over 9000 square foot lawn. The house was built in 1997 and the lawn is old and full of weeds. It's gonna be a heck of a project for me. I think I have to contact someone with a bobcat to cut out my old lawn. It's a St. Augustine dominant lawn, which I hate so much. The last 2 houses I lived in I had one Bermuda lawn and one centipede lawn. This time, I'm thinking destroying my whole lawn and seed it with zoysia. Your work looks great!

    Great video covering the process. One thing different I'm doing than you is I'm going to attempt to pre-germinate my kbg. You basically put your grass seed in cheese cloth and soak it in water for 5 days. Every 12 hours you change out the water. Hopefully this cuts down a lot on the massive watering as well as the lloooonnnngggg germination time kbg has.

    • @LAWNLIFE

      @@LAWNLIFE This will be the first time I attempt to try this. I live in Oklahoma so I'll be putting seed down within the next 2 weeks. The current lawn has undergone multiple rounds of glyphosate and I'm about to start scalping and working the land in the next day or two. I only have about 1800sqft so it's not a major underataking.
      As far as the pre germination I did a full reno of my back yard last fall. The time from seed down to when I actually saw anything seemed like an eternity. Since this is now the front yard I'm working on I want to speed that process up as quickly as I can. These kbg type lawns are the most beautiful lawn I've ever seen when everything is ideal and I'm excited to show this off to the neighborhood. We don't see many cool season lawns in Oklahoma lol

    Great video! I’m in the Duluth area and did a spring renovation this year with decent results (80% KBG/20% PRG mix). One piece of advice I’d give you is to maybe reconsider that late evening watering cycle. I was doing an 8pm watering cycle through the germination phase and now I’m battling a fungus issue. It maybe won’t be as much of an issue for you with a fall renovation.
    Also, I laid straw mats down and I’m not so sure you’ll want to try pulling those mats up. From what I saw, those seedlings are pretty fragile and weave their way through the blankets and if you try to rip up the blankets, I think you’ll end up taking a lot of the baby grass plants with them. Best of luck to you! Can’t wait for the updates.

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  Před 3 lety

      Man, a semi-successful spring reno this year is 100% a success. This drought here is no joke.
      I have actually taken my night waterings off after germination because of this reason. Will be hitting it with a preventative fungicide in the next couple of days also.
      As far as the blankets go, you're 100% right. I tried peeling some of it up tonight and about 10-20% of the seedlings come with it. Kind of regretting the decision to use these blankets now (if a pop storm rolled through I wouldn't be. Hindsight is 20/20). I'm going to wait a couple more weeks and see what happens with more established grass. Thanks for the detailed comment and for watching man. Hopefully your reno is doing well as well!

      What cultivars did you go with btw?

    • @tylerbodin4565
      @tylerbodin4565 Před 3 lety

      Bewitched, Bedazzled, Blueberry, and Bluenote are my KBG cultivars. Then Manhattan for the PRG.
      I tried a fall reno last year without any coverings that resulted in two back to back daylong downpours a few days after I seeded which washed away everything including most of the topsoil I brought in (goodbye $2,000+ worth of soil and seed! 😩) Needless to say, I was a little gun shy this time around so I laid hay blankets over the whole thing and wouldn’t you know it, we didn’t get any natural rainfall until like 4 weeks in lol. Having peace of mind this time around was well worth the $600 in blankets though. Honestly, in the areas that are coming in thick, you can’t even see the mats anymore. There’s only a couple areas that you can still see the hay/netting slightly. I’ve read they will degrade naturally after a year or so.
      One question for you… if I were to over-seed soon to thicken up those thin areas, what would your recommendations be for getting that seed down past the netting/hay? I’m thinking if i tried aerating it would just end up tangling with all the netting and become a huge mess? I’m thinking I’ll just spread the seed and then water in, hoping the seed falls through the netting to the soil and then possibly top dress with a little topsoil to cover the seed?

    I know its late in the season, but we've got about 2k sqft in our backyard thats been pretty barren and under trees, so this year i decided to start growing some grass... turns out the dirt was super compacted, so i soaked the area and stomped it out for a few hours with 2" spike tine aerator shoes. softened the area beyond well, kept watering, did another aeration process and planted some ace hardware brand shade seed, covered with a very thin layer of gardners gold compost (1/8" at most), raked it flat and kept it nice and wet for two days and then we got the huge storm this week for 3 days straight.
    today is day 6 post-seed and i've already got 2" grass through most of the area already. WILD how fast this stuff grows.... now, did i get lucky with severe rain in the end of june 2023, and will this grass survive when it gets hotter? sheeeee, i hope so. stoked how grass can make a big difference. either way, i hope i didnt screw myself buying ace hardware brand seed, but its taken REALLY well so far.

Degrading at 0.5x the rate of germination. Just take my money now. Great vid as always. And if you ever need an extra hand laying out a renovation, I'm there. Hand me a leveling rake and dibs on the second mow.

      Bro you just blew my mind with the biodegradable blanket. Let's mix it with tenacity, starter fert, and a fungicide. Let me know when you're ready to start up the business. I'll partner with you!

      @@LAWNLIFE I am pretty sure there are "seed" blankets out there in the market but they're mostly Big Box crap and not Homepro domination versions or specific to a lawn reno DIY. I suspect they're mostly Developer/Erosion control stuff. I am located in Atlanta. So my interest is warm season / bermuda grass but I like to follow what my cool season brothers are doing. Trying to learn what I can and am jealous of the stripes.

    is it worth overseeding with a Elite Cultivar Grass Seed if you don't already have a Elite Grass Seed lawn? or would dethatching and aerating in the late summer/fall be enough to eventually takeover the grass?

    In the Twin Cities, should I start overseeing my lawn now then put down the fall weed & feed in mid September?
    (I won't go to all the trouble you did despite how terrible my lawn looks after our extreme drought.) If it weren't for crab grass my lawn wouldn't have any green. Now I hear we may be shut off entirely from any city water for lawns.

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  Před 3 lety

      What type of grasss do you plan on overseeding with? I would say go with perrenial rye grass if you want fast results. At this point I wouldn't worry about the weed and feed if you don't have much for grass. The pre-emergent in the fall is only going to stop Poa and it sounds like that is the least of your worries at this point.
      Even with a watering ban you can get a watering permit if you're putting down new seed. Look into that.

    Nice vid! I would also like to sow the dark everest seed, but I fear the Poa Annua!!! ...and that it could become very spotty as a result. What are you doing against the Poa Annua problem? Greetings from Berlin (Germany)

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  Před 3 lety

      I'm not too worried about the spottiness of the new lawn coming in. KBG will fill in itself in a lot of areas if you feed it and you can plug or reseed any bare spots. As for Poa, I'm deathly afraid of it. I had zero poa issues in the lawn I killed and that's the only thing I'm afraid of at this point. I'm going to be putting down a pre-emergent around 45 to 60 days after germination and hope that it holds any at bay if I get any. Fingers crossed! Thanks for watching!

    Most places I've looked are calling for 2lb/1000 sq ft seeding rate for KBG. Is that for overseeding? Seems a little low but I've never used KBG so maybe that's right.

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  Před 3 lety

      Full rate for a renovation is usually 2-3 lbs per 1000. The seeds are much smaller than other grass seed

    I bringing about 15 yards of soil to fix the grade and foundation level and level lawn in my backyard I have the next starter pack of fertilizer (rgs, air8, humidity 12, micro green) should be able to get a soil test back but it won't contain the new soil in it still worth doing test ? on that note this seem like a good starter pack to put down after I put down the tenacity ?

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  Před 3 lety +1

      I wouldn't do the soil test if it doesn't include the new topsoil. That's where the seed will be germinating at. Honestly I would just use starter fert for the fertilizer. A lot of the stuff that you would be using with the starter pack will just be wasted because nothing in the soil will be able to use it for awhile.

      I didn't want to bring up old weed seeds. I never really had any compaction issues in my lawn either. It would've been an extra step that I felt like I could live without. Especially with how much topsoil I brought in
