- Hey Ya'll! I enjoyed doing the gatekeeping joint, so I thought I'd hit you with something similar. We are covering this old Jordan Brand commercial for the Air Jordan XVI (16) this time. It features the powerful Mos Def aka Yasin Bey, Umi Says. I found it interesting that this thing even exists. It really focuses on the black and brown experience in a very positive way. It was so much fun being able to look back on this commercial and some of the history around it. I'd love to interview some of the people involved one day.
If it's your first time hearing about this commercial, let me know in the comments! If you're loving this or any of my other content, please let me know by clicking that like and subscribe button. Thanks again for watching!
PS- Sorry about the lighting. I'm still working on getting it right. I hope the quality of the video can overcome the bad lighting :(

Yeah. Iconic to say the least. This video touched on three things I hold dear: AJ’s, hip hop and Black people. Love the deep dive here and how it makes me want to know even more! What did that marketing room look like? Who MADE the proposal? Who APPROVED the proposal?! Thanks for this post, brother. This is one for the books.
That was my original angle but there’s just very little info available about this commercial. Though it came out during the internet age, it obviously wasn’t like it is now so there isn’t very much public documentation about the making of this one. I would love to maybe one day interview the people who were involved. i got a lead on the ad agency who did it so its a start!

What complicated history?
A lot of black people lacked personal accountability and personal responsibility and thought Jordan was supposed to sacrifice his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create generational wealth for his family and himself and go out there and be a Martyr for someone else's causes and a pawn, puppet and useful idiot without getting anything accomplished.
The black community is a joke and thinks every black successful person owes them something.
Michael Jordan gave a $100 million dollar donation more than any other athlete in history to combat systemic racism but of course you didn't make a video highlighting it because it's too positive.
Jordan has actually done more for society than any other athlete in history without running his mouth, genuflecting, kowtowing, marching, pandering, protesting, ranting, raving, tweeting or whining.
Thanks for ruining the video.
A lot of black people think because they purchased Jordan's shoes he's obligated and responsible to them all day everyday 24/7.
I feel like the fact that they used an underground rapper as the main song and as the main guy they revolved around in the ad really testifies to a genuine attempt to relate to the community. But of course like you said, ads are ads at the end of the day and they exist purely to sell more product.
Exactly! I think something can be earnest and still want to sell you something too lol
This song was inspired by Sheron Smith AKA "UMI" Yasins Mother R.I.P
