    For my Active Division run during the staff match portion of Moons Out Goons Out 2024, I set up a 9mm Hi-Point carbine with a BE Meyers MAWL last unit. Great laser; terrible gun. My hypothesis was that the gun itself didn't really matter so long as it was reliable and accurate enough to hit a silhouette at ~125 yards. The Hi-Point met those criteria, but I failed to recognize just how much its reloading and other manual of arms elements would hinder me. The MAWL was fantastic, and is the only reason my performance wasn't absolutely dismal.
    Thanks to our awesome match sponsors! Thanks to them, we were able to make this a great event with an outstanding prize table:

    10 round mags isn't that bad man, I was reloading a lever action!!!! Even if I timed out on most stages I'll still say I had the most fun running the lever gun. Except for when I had to reload.

    @Forgotten Weapons Have you ever thought of setting up two stages where the shooter must use an oddball battlefield pick up to get back to their main gear? One that I would recommend is a factory standard Ruger 10/22 with no changes to the sights and being stuck with a mixed bag of 10-round magazines with varying numbers of rounds in said magazines (a few partial and a few fully loaded). Maybe have the shooter pick up the 10/22 with an empty chamber and empty mag. Whatcha' think man?

    • @geodkyt
      @geodkyt Před měsícem +12

      Soldier of F̶i̶c̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ Fortune staged some matches at their Las Vegas conventions that had a stage like that. One I recall reading about had the shooter come up to a beat up revolver and a handful of loose rounds lying next to it. One shooter couldn't get the cylinder open, so he engaged the target with his Kabar (friggin' Marines 😂 )

    One design idea of the UZI sub-machine gun is the magazine in the grip allows you to reload easier in the dark as your hands can find themselves. You ran this with an AR platform and a platform with the magazine in the grip. Did you find this design philosophy had any merit? I mean you could not get the magazine seated, but could you at least find the magazine well better than with the AR?

    The Hi Point 995 carbine is a fun, inexpensive, dependable firearm but it isn't a AR or AK. If you are use to running those none of those firearms manipulations translate to the Hi Point. It has its own manual of arms and you must learn them to be proficient. CZcamsrs continually run HPs without putting in the time to learn its manipulation. Ian runs FALs, AKs, ARs and Lebels but the Hi Point, no so much. He also decided to do so at night, under nods. He went all in and I appreciate the honesty and entertainment.

    Hi-Point CF380! The gun everyone loves to hate but…??reasons. It’s loved by some.
    Just a personal opinion but you’re *much* better off with a Bersa Thunder 380…or a Taurus. Or a Turkish 1911. Or a Rock Island Armory / Armscor M200 .38 Special revolver…or a S&W SD9/SD9VE series.
    Yes, I know, all those are more expensive than Hi-Points but they’re only slightly more expensive than Hi-Points.

    This proved out to be an interesting match to watch, but made more so by your experiment about using a low tech rifle and a high tech sighting device. If you were just shooting in the desert for fun, the faults of the Hi-Point would have been an annoyance. But here they were magnified by being under the clock, and cost you a crap-ton (which is more than a metric ton) of penalty points.

    I think your basic premise that the gun doesn't matter is sound, you just took it to far. I think a better premise is that the gun does not matter if it has certain features. I.E. semi-automatic function, an appropriate caliber for the ranges you will shoot at, magazines that are easily changed, the ability to mount optics/lasers/etc. and to mount them in the appropriate places for the device.
    I think magazine capacity while a factor is less important then a design that allows the magazines to be rapidly changed and for the magazine to lock in place easily. I saw a video from this match where the competitor used an AR platform and had an issue with his mags locking in place on one stage because he overloaded them and tried to insert them with the bolt forward.
    The capacity issue seems to come into play with the requirement to retain empty magazines. That could probably be made easier with changes to gear. More easily accessed dump pouch or something.
