      Oh yeah, I can certainly imagine. I’m a film editor AND tech guy, and a good example is how right now I’m watching the Mary Tyler Moore show with my father, which for anyone who doesn’t know is one of the most loved sitcoms of all time, but was made in the early seventies. As in season one was 1970. And when we get to each new episode, I’m often hearing or seeing massive drops in audio or video quality, which my father doesn’t see or hear. Which is a bit odd, since he’s a big tech guy too. But still.

      Im annoyed by people with no standards, or incredibly low standards... Products get worse while getting more expensive as a result of none concerning customers such as youself...
      Companys get away with proverbial murder... TVs are a great example of this.. 2020 saw a shifting of just about the whole lineup from all manufacturers. rather than improve models, each tv is now comparable to the model that would have been below it on the stack the previous year, rather than above it..
      Quality is regressing...

      @PSspecialist Před 4 lety +56

      @@William-Morey-Baker Your problem is not with people. It's with capitalism. It only makes sense that not everybody can be an expert on everything. In the same way that you have high standards on TVs there are inevitably going to be people with higher standards than yours on other products where you have mediocre standards without even thinking about them. It should be the companies' responsibility to price things fairly and not trick people. Since that is counter-productive when it comes to profit margins and since big capital seems to have severe allergic reactions to regulating anything other than pure necessities you get the declining state of the current market. Make systemic critiques instead of blaming individuals. That's how progress is made.

      "use your eyes" works for disabling all of the "fuckery" like motion smoothing and fine tuning sharpness. for things like black levels/contrast/brightness if it's something you KNOW should look a certain way, you can kinda eyeball it. if you really want to "calibrate" it you use printed test cards or a meter. i've got an ancient usb one that will work for calibrating a monitor, you could probably run it (with a PC) in a way that lets you dial in settings changes instead of just spitting an .icm profile.

      Game mode is an option that display manufacturers put into their HDTVs to disable certain image processing protocols when its enabled. It usually makes your picture look worse. Why would anyone want to do that? Because your pretty picture is the reason your controller and inputs feel sluggish. By enabling “Game Mode”, you are disabling certain features of the TV to reduce picture quality, and in return you get more responsive inputs on your controller. Here is a fun tip I learned last year. TVs often have their best sales price in early January apparently to clear out inventory for the previous model year. Now knowing that I have been looking around and I have found a 55" Samsung NU6900 for $299 USD at Microcenter even though I already bought the same TV for $50 more in December. Anyway I thought I would pass that tip along.

      @@ZealofSparta To be perfectly honest, I'm not that salty about it cuz I actually ended up with a pretty good TV anyway. It helps that I had a lot of knowledge about what features I was looking for. It's an LG 49UM6950DUB. The TV has a lot of awesome features. Surprisingly, it even supports 240p through component. I was not expecting that on a 4K TV. I'm probably not going to use that, as I always play my PS1 games on the PS3, but it's a nice thing to have as I have heard *some* PS2 games are 240p.

      It saddens me that plasma was abandoned. I know that they were energy hogs but even with 4K and HDR, I miss the motion on plasma. Judder is terrible on LCD displays and even OLED (which is my goal to own by the end of the year) struggles with it. All the solutions to this that manufacturers come up with only mask the problem with mild to moderate soap opera effect.

    Hell, I have the TCL 50" 50S425 now, but not for long. It's okay, but nothing I'd personally recommend to anyone as I am in the process of upgrading. It's replacement will be here Wednesday. Over the last few days I've been researching and even almost went for one of the ones that I am seeing in your descriptions. By your recommendations even being listed here, I figure that either of the ones outside of the one that I have now would have been a descent choice for me, personally. I've have decided on a 55" TCL 6 series. Even decided to choose the older (2018) 6R17 model over the newer ones like the 6R25 after extensive research, as some of the features like "lag input" and "brightness " matters a bit more to me, and some of the newer models (including the 6R25) seemed to have regressed in some of those regards. Nice vids though. You have tons of wisdom when it comes to these things and a lot of your advice helped me out a great deal in building up my PC.

I’m glad Linus thinks it’s pretty decent-ish as I was wondering if I should even spend the money on a more expensive OLED TV. I’m not really qualified on knowledge of specs and such so maybe I’ll wait a year or so and get someone to run through what LG OLED is the best to grab for a budget of £900-£1300 odd.

      @@Dr.WhetFarts Yep, same when you select "PC" as a source type. Half the color controls get disabled, 10-point calibration turns to 2-point calibration etc. That's why I only turn it on when I want to do something fast/productive on the PC or to actually play some video game (with all the CGI, who even cares about "correct" colors anyway, that's only a concern for actual movies and TV series). But to be fair, it's hard to imagine how they could possibly get insane responses like 11.8 ms without turning off a whole bunch of processing (mine's older, it only does like 24 or so).
