    Jan Smithers! My GOD, was she beautiful on WKRP! I always thought she was MUCH prettier as her character, Bailey Quarters, than the station’s plastic receptionist, Jennifer Marlowe (who always made me think that if you took the 5 pounds of product out of her hair and somehow got hold of a 55-gallon drum of cold cream to remove the 20 pounds of makeup, lipstick, mascara and eye shadow, you’d find something positively SCARY underneath it all!). I was actually working on the air at a California Radio Station the entire time WKRP was in production. And although there were a number of things they did that were absolutely NOT the way they were actually done at a real radio station, the show was still funny. They had managed to put together a cast with the right chemistry to pull it off.
    TV had tried a couple of times in the past to do a show about Radio, and those previous attempts deservedly fell flat. One show called “Good Morning, World” comes to mind, and if I recall correctly, it lasted all of 13 weeks (which was then standard for a BOMB), then it disappeared, never to be seen again. WKRP, on the other hand, had genuinely good scripts, the right cast and lasted longer than the critics thought it would. Jan Smithers was a big reason for that - the way she played “Bailey”, she started out being rather timid, especially when it came to the prospect of being on the air. But once she found her confidence, there was no stopping her! “Bailey” just seemed to take a really long time to finally realize how beautiful she was, and that she indeed did have what it took to be good on the air, as a news person or whatever she decided to be. It was fun to watch Ms. Smithers play that role, and see her character grow into being a radio person. Since I worked with real people who were doing the same thing, it made the way Jan Smithers handled her part seem that much better. Some years after WKRP, I ended up directing Network TV News. Our evening Anchor ended up going to the REAL Cincinnati’s NBC Station to be its General Manager. If you remember the “open” of WKRP, when you see that big broadcast tower, that was actually the tower of that Cincinnati, Ohio TV Station! But everything I’ve written here that doesn’t concern Jan Smithers directly is ANOTHER STORY. Suffice it to say she was one terrific actress and did a bang- up job on WKRP IN CINCINNATI.

    WKRP was one of my favorite tv shows in the 70s and still think it's one of the best sitcoms ever made with the perfect cast of characters. Jan sounds like she's done well for herself especially with her daughter and keeping busy with her causes. I never saw the WKRP reboot in the 90s and sounds like I didn't miss anything but I wish the best for Jan Smithers and all the surviving cast members of WKRP in their futures.

    • @hubbsllc
      @hubbsllc Pƙed 2 lety +1

      You're right; in my mind it was one of the best sitcoms of that whole era - the characterizations were just exquisite and omg, the writing. A lot of the fun of watching the show was that once you got to "know" the characters, you sort of knew how they'd react to situations, in ways idiosyncratic to each of them. I also liked it that whereas Bailey and Jennifer were *superficially* very different, they resisted the urge to make Jennifer vapid and insubstantial; over the course of the series it appeared that Jennifer made the executive function of the station possible because Carlson really didn't have the head for it.

    I have found that you can quote lines from WKRP and everyone in the room (even across different generations) knows what you are referencing. That's very impressive for a show with a relatively brief run. Plus, as anyone else noticed the close parallel of the WKRP cast to the Gilligan's island cast. The obvious, Bailey=Mary Ann, Jennifer=Ginger...I think this is a happy story of a Woman who is imbued with abundant charm and charisma who has led (and continues to lead) an exceptionally satisfying and fulfilling life.

    I remember those driving simulators they were so much fun you could put them in either automatic mode or standard straight stick mode anyway the teacher would sit at the back of the room monitoring the console that monitored everybody in the room who was driving they had all kinds of sensors on them that would light up buzzers and alarms back there on his panel one of the things we really like to do was get the driver's speed up to about 60 or 70 miles an hour and standard drive push in the clutch and then shift it into reverse all the sensors would go crazy and he'd be back there screaming and cussing at all of us.

    I watched the original WKRP in Cincinnati every time it aired in my area. One of the questions asked was " Did you have Drivers Ed in your High School and did they have the driving simulators?" ... the answer is YES to both parts of that question and I feel very strongly that Drivers Ed should be implemented back into a High Schools especially in my state of Texas. Texas does have some of the friendliest drivers you would encounter but also has some of the worst... especially the teenage drivers! Hey, enjoyed the walk down memory lane... thanks!

She also had a beaitiful sister. God bless her im so glad to see she had a wonderful life. I dont know if she would remember the tall guy ,6ft4, named Colin Smith who sat directly in front of her in high school. But l remember her. She was a natural, stunning beauty who was totally nice. It was a great time and place to grow up
