ADDITIONAL REVIEW NOTES:
Cameras:
Tensor chip inside is the same as the flagships, and the photos and videos really show it!
(iphone SE is really the only other phone doing this)
Video is massively improved with the Tensor considering the older sensor
Photos in daylight are indistinguishable from the flagships
I would bet in a blind camera test, this would have a strong chance of beating any flagship out there when given a normal daylight scene
Even in dim lighting, the astrophotography and night modes are amazing
The only issue is the video quality of the front facing camera
Design:
Plastic back feels like glass
Smaller phone! I love small phones, especially when they have flagship processors
IP67 water and dust rating is welcomed, but the glass is a bit more fragile than most flagships, so I recommend a case. Not sponsored, but the Spigen ones are nice with their stand
Pocketability is fantastic, even with a case. I rarely use a case, but I would here
No 3.5mm jack - for this price, I know for a fact my dad uses his headphone jack all the time. I never really do, but most people using this phone will probably miss that
Display:
Maybe I am falling behind, but when did 60Hz become a setback for a midrange phone? The iPhone 13 and 13 mini have it, the iPhone SE has it, and many phones with a faster refresh rate compromise heavily elsewhere. I think this display is just fine. Do not NOT buy this phone because of the
The color is passable, but not nearly as good as the Pixel 6 Pro
The FP sensor really is pretty slow
I recommend registering your fingerprints twice
Battery:
Lacks wireless charging
Standby battery is incredible
Can get warm while charging
Clean UI. Pixel is one of my favorite operating systems on the market honestly
Fast, smooth, and no bloatware
You can choose how integrated you are with Googleâs AI
Not nearly as buggy as we saw with the original Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launch
If you get it, I recommend enabling some sweet features like
quickTap
NowPlaying
Call screening
$449 is a compelling price

What I enjoy most about your reviews is that they approach the devices from the user experience rather than a bunch of specs. Thanks.
So glad you appreciate it!
@@MikeOBrienMedia Excellent job âŒïž Keep up the great work âŒïž
Totally. Samsung loves to make their features look good on paper, but (for instance) their 5mp macro or 5mp ultra-wide lenses simply look garbage IRL. Their 5mp ultra-wide lenses are literally extras from Samsungs European motor division back-up safety cameras. The photos (and more so videos) they take are garbage. They don't care much about user experience, as long as it looks good on paper. I was a huge Sammy fan for years back, but their devices (and more so, software) have gotten to be all flash and not much substance.
Most reviewers are guilty of this. It's sad, lol. They go by numbers only. And one thing is automatically better than the other, and then completely ignoring price points and such, after that.
I have the same thought. I like specs...but how the phone works day today day it way more important to me..great job!!
The live translation on this phone in chat apps is ridiculously good. It made talking to my family and out of country friends so much easier with the language barrier pretty much gone.
â€ïžđŻ
This is the best 6a review I have seen yet.. and the main reason for that is that you view the phone from the perspective of someone who would actually buy the phone. A lot of other reviewers are looking at it as a tech geek.. It's really refreshing to see someone who understands the consumer who is looking at this phone.
I picked up the 6a display model at my local target today and was shocked at how smooth it felt. I always imagined that pixels weren't that smooth for some reason. Haven't gotten a chance to try android 12 stock for a while either and it seemed pretty nice.
I recently purchased this phone for my mom, who uses maybe 10% of the smart features on smartphones. I have an S22 Ultra and while setting up this phone and using it for a bit, it's honestly such a good phone and it's $370 right now new. Sure, it doesn't do anything better than the S22 Ultra, but it's almost 4x less expensive and the processing power is honestly astounding. The display quality is probably the biggest drawback but it's still really decent.
2:47 what you said came out to be true in MKBHD's blind camera test.
I traded my 4a in and got a really good deal + Pixel a Buds which sound better than my inexpensive, but still good Soundpeats. The 6a is my 2nd phone with an under display fingerprint reader. The other was a Samsung S10. I really didn't like it on the S10, but on the 6a it's fine, but I prefer a dedicated sensor on the back or in the power button like my TCL phone has. Overall I really like the 6a so far.
loved the video. would you go Xiaomi or pixal if you had a choice? at the same price point.
Been using a 6A for about 10 days and am really enjoying it. I think you made some great points in this video that reflect my own experience. I'm coming from the Pixel 4a so this definitely feels like an upgrade while still providing a familiar experience.
Side note: I was pretty shocked by Google's preorder trade-in offer where I picked up this phone, plus the Pixel Buds A, for $150 after trading in my 4a đ€Ż Definitely a no-brainer!
agreed, the trade in is what hooked me, they gave 300 for my 4a and gave the pixel ear buds for free, so in the long run the phone cost me 180..still disappointed but mostly with bugs ive experienced and the screen finger print reader, it is much less accurate. then the back side reader
Heyy hiiiii, does the camera feel bad? Like pixelated or something?
@@CptNogg what were you disappointed about? Care to share?
@@thearyaputra I kinda did if you hit the read more button but now that updates have fixed the bugs and I have gotten used to the finger print reader I suppose I'm satisfied especially for the price
@@CptNogg thanks for the update. Appreciate it.
The only real reason I bought this phone was for the size I've been carrying around a 6.8 inch phone for the longest time now and when I went to Best buy to feel it in hand it was so refreshing and I really wanted the iPhone 12 mini because it was around the same price currently but the battery life on that one just seems not nearly as good as it will be on the pixel 6A. I was very close to getting the pro or even the regular six but the 6A size is just perfect. If your dad is okay with big phones you should get them the LG v60 it has the best headphone jack around and a great battery life and great screen brightness and all that stuff that's the phone I have now and I'm going to keep it too because I love it so much it's just pretty big so I'm going to use it secondary to my pixel 6A.
How about the heating issue?
Does LG make phones anymore? I won't buy a product from a company which just quit because it couldn't stand the competition.
@@im_thasneem7506 There isn't much of an issue with heating after I got the android 13 update.
Perfect size for me. My previous smartphone was 5.5 " but the 6a is more compact. The performance is smooth and quick.
It's interesting how different the views are depending on where you're coming from. I've had a Huawei P30 before the Pixel 6a and even if the screen size is the same, the 6a seems humongous to me, the P30 (albeit having a smaller battery), was so nice and slim in comparison.
Very much liked your review as I was trying to see if spending more for Pixel 6 was worth it. However I would also like to know about the camera eraser as I could see myself using that I think.
Mike has good taste in cases
I'm watching this using a Spigen case on my pixel 6 pro. Despite the issues, I really like the recent pixels and the 6 pro is great
That's the correct way how to encounter tech.Your reviews are great keep growing...
7:45 "maybe use the PIN instead" took me off guard đ but in all seriousness great review, I value day-to-day experience vs specs so this was super helpful đ
Glad you liked the video! The pin comment was mostly a joke haha
I use the pin all the time. Sometimes you need to slow the fk down.
Thanks for the reviews
Been watching reviews all morning and you seriously sound like the only voice of reason
Really like the focus of your video. I've been a fan of Google's phones since my Nexus 6P. I got a chance to pick up a 6a for $249(!} and couldn't pass it up. Keep up the nice work!
Just got both of my parents new 6a's since they were down to 299 because of black Friday. I didn't know too much about this phone despite having a Pixel 7 but your review made me feel sure they'll enjoy it!
IV had this phone for a week now and it's been flawless. I'm running the Android 13 beta and those improvements along with animations that are iphone level smooth. I'm coming from the iphone 12 mini and the flip 3 so i prefer compact devices and the 6a has the better battery by a long shot out of the 3. Charging is definitely slow but I can make it the whole day without a charge and i can't say that for the flip 3 and mini. 60hz has been no issue because the OS has been so smooth. I'm just not sure if the smoothness is from Android 13 thing or pixel UI. Could be both but I recommend this phone
Also I had no issues with the finger print scanner. Again I'm not sure if this is just based on units or if Android 13 fixed it
i also have a 12 mini and i was thinking of switching to it just for the android ecosystem and battery, do you think its worth it?
Yup, smooth interface, no problems here with the fingerprint scanner, and I prefer better battery life to 90hz refresh rate. I think people nowadays have the tendency to get all hoity-toity about their phone specs, and look down on any phone with lower specs than their flagships, and they totally ignore the fact that not everyone can afford a flagship phone. Also most people coming from a midrange phone to the 6a probably only experienced 60hz with their old phone (unless they are coming from a really recent midrange, or from a flagship) so the 60hz will not be a "downgrade". And again, the OS on the 6a is slick as owl poop.
I don't care if my phone can't record 8k video. What would I watch it on? And the filesize? 128gb for 12 minutes on my mom's Galaxy 21FE. 12 whole minutes, huh? Sounds......useful..... Right?
@@Boogie_the_cat What about charging time ?
@@bhubanmalek4589 90 minutes
I like Pixel phones - particularly the ones that are not carrier locked and thus free of junkware and you can root them pretty easily. I'm always several generations behind on phones - right now on a Pixel 3 which actually does pretty much what I need it to do. I might upgrade to a 5 for the camera, so a 6 is a far way off. The only thing that would be a dealbreaker for me is the wireless charging - that's a convenience I just won't miss anymore. Well, my refurbished Pixel 3 still works fine and probably will for the next year or two and then I can think about a 5 when that comes down to under $100 - which is my spending limit for a phone.
Anyone know how to keep webpages open when you close google? When I reopen them they always go back to the search page
Thanks a lot! This is the best smartphone review I've ever seen. Except for this: You don't say anything about the sound.Could you please do that in upcoming reviews? Thank you.
Currently an iPhone Xr owner i am searching for a new phone. Considering some options and after seeing this review, seriously considering this one. Great overview. You've got a new subscriber.
I have had this phone for a few days. I find that when Iam in my app for security cameras, the phone heats up...battery usage...not sure.
Just good honest review, great
Nice. Video, just got the phone it's terrific
Great review and fair/honest
I got this phone for my wife, and it's perfect for a casual phone user. None of the extra features that casual users don't touch. Just stock Android that runs smoothly. Plus they came with the pixel buds A series, and those were a huge upgrade. Away with the wires.
hi, im israeli too :D
Hello Mike... How many years of Software Updates will it receive ???
I bought a 6a based on this video...I have no interest in phone cameras I am only interested in cpu power. Initially I would have rated it 5/ 10... I was really struggling to adapt, but once I had watched a video of all the 6a features, it went to a 9/10 and as soon as I got the 3 nav icons back it went to a 10/ 10... live translation and the captions ability really make this phone desirable. A lot of videos focus (sic) on the 6a camera, but it is so much more than that... :)
I came to this phone from a Oneplus 7 Pro, I do notice the difference going from 90hz to 60hz, but I don't care, I changed jobs to one where I risk damaging my phone, so the chance to buy the 6A for ÂŁ199 sim free was my motivation, I bought it as a beater, knowing it would beat all others at ÂŁ200 by some way, and I get the buds A series included.
I still have the OP7Pro as my second phone for media and gaming when I travel.
The difference between 60 and 90 is negligible!
I still use one plus 7 pro it's great đ
Mike said "pixel 6A will beat other flagships in a blind test" 4 months later MKBHD declared pixel 6A the winner of the blind test
Thx for the useful review! I just picked the 6a for $285 at Target with my Red Card 5%discount. $299 without the Target Red Card is still an amazing price. If you liked it at $449, you'll love it at $299!
I am using the pixel 6a, and I love the phone. Awesome review.
I loved my Pixel 3A, but the offer to get up to $300 on a trade-in was too good to pass up. The deal also included a pair of free Pixel A Series ear buds! My first 6A ran hot. Too hot for the Phoenix, AZ area. Google sent me another phone, which has proved to be much better. I really struggled to get my Outlook Contacts on the 6A. I use hotmail, and the integration for mail was easy. I'm not sure why there was a problem with getting the Contacts on the phone. I ended up with my email via Outlook and Personal (IMAP) when I view the Passwords and Accounts under Settings. Very happy now, and I did get the full $300 trade-in!
I like your no bs take on the review đ
How is the call quality. For me call quality is an important criteria. I want the sound to be loud and clear during calls
Whne you've been a gamer for a lot fo years, you know there's more to a device, or app, or game than its specs alone, optimization is just as, if not more important than the product itself. I traded in my absolutely wonderful Samsung A71 5G(no complaints at all!). That phone did everything I wanted it to do, but was a tiny bit too big for my EDC carry pack, and didn't have great water resistance, other than that...perfect! Using a case and screen protector, like 90% of people do, gets rid of most of the 6a's issues right away. I am blown away, at the ease of use just the tiny difference in size makes! I do have one complaint, that isn't an issue, it GETS HOT!!! Not just playing games, but with regular use, solved by the cover, but it's still getting hot, I'm just not having to deal with it, that's still a concern. Fingerprint reading is many times better than my Samsung, the samera is far inferior, yet SOMEHOW...with Google magic, I don't know, gets just as awesome pictures! No regrets, and sorry for the long post.
Not to sound like a relic, but my shure SE215s still work and I bought them in 2013. I would really like that 3.5mm jack on my phone even if I don't use it much as it's convenient to have if I ever run out of battery or forget my own pair. Pairing new devices for bluetooth isn't always seamless it has software issues as well as hardware issues(wavelengths being transmitted). Sad to see it go, but I personally don't have a phone with a headphone jack right now either.
Love you man
I've had mine for 2 weeks too. I was coming from LG V30 and this is my first Pixel. First 3 days felt miserable esp with the display and the power & volume buttons being on the right side (I'm right handed but I use my left hand on phone). I love this phone for its size, price, and features! Love the call screening and how it answers incoming calls for me and puts them on speaker (when I say "answer"). The android feels so clean and smooth. I wish there was a charger in the box. Phone also somehow gets warm when charging and using it at d same time. Overall great user experience so far. I love my 6a.
How about the heating issue?
@@im_thasneem7506 Hi, the heating stopped. I love this my first Pixel and I'm hoping to get the Pixel 7
I recently purchased one for myself and found out I am totally into it. Every single penny is worth for value.
Brilliant reviewâ€đ„
This phone really is an amazing deal. Especially after the Google trade in promo offering $300 for an old iPhone 7, and the Pixel buds, DONE! The ONLY issues that I have are 1. I really miss wireless charging, and 2. an option to upgrade to a larger internal storage size would have been fantastic! Having said that, this phone, after the upgrade to 13, really is almost perfect. Great video, by the way. You earned a sub!
i have bought pixel 4a via a 3rd party seller, unfortunately google does not sell phones in my country (Romania), i`d love the trade off and get 300 bucks. (the phone i have works good so far, no issues with it).
Amazing Review. Very Straight forward đđđ»
Coming from 4a I find that it gets hotter much more quickly. I have only had a few days. I'm not happy with the fingerprint transition at all.
I can't get the 'what's playing now' feature to work, any suggestions? I've tried everything I can find to make it work. Thanks
Just the video I was looking for. I need something for real estate video at a reasonable price that has 60 fps and ultra-wide lens. I'd love an iPhone but out of my range I'm afraid. How far behind the iPhone is this especially for dimly lit interiors? My wife's iPhone 12 shoot lovely video. Thanks for this.
I have had the phone since launch, and I agree with everything you say about it. People who have never even used one love to bang on about the screen, and the 60 Htz thing. These guys should not be so obsessed with numbers, 60 is fine! Oh, and my fingerprint scanner works consistently too!
How about the heating issue?
@@im_thasneem7506 There isn't one!
Just got it where can you find headphones for pixal6a
My GP6a in chalk has been a decent entry level phone. I am having some touch issues even with the sensitivity turned higher. And when I charge my phone and try to use it at the same time I get a weird screen issue like it's scanning the screen from bottom to top then beeps quietly. It is acting like it doesn't want me to use the phone when it is charging. I'm not doing a very good job explaining it, but it is strange what it does when it charges.
I've noticed Google and Samsung both "update" their phones during charging cycles. One time I got booted off a phone call cause my Samsung decided a One UI update was more important than my grandma.
@@jevonsims900 WOW that's strange...
is it good idea to shift from iphone 12 to pixel 6A for a change ?
Agree with everything except the display. Plenty good phones under 450 have high refresh displays like the Motorolas, they even offer "pixel like experience" so many people go for them instead of a Pixel. 60hz isn't a big deal to be as I'm not a power user of phones but instead of PCs so I would be fine with it but most people want at least 90hz especially 450 is a lot for just 60hz
Smaller phone but still feels big in my hand hehehe I miss the 4a size, just nice
I have a TCL Stylus 5G. Definitely a midrange phone, nothing close to a Pixel 6, or even the 6A, but the 60hz display doesn't feel slow to me.
Was looking at the specs... The 60Hz display was a bit a bummer... But im coming from 60Hz like you said... And I just ordered the 6A for 344 USD... Doubt that some other Brand can beat Bang per Buck on this device... Really excited to try a Pixel.. was 8 years on Xiaomi now.
I Traded in my Pixel 4a for the 6a after 2 years of use of the 4a. The 4a when I bought it was $350 brand new. Google gave me $300 for my 2 year old Pixel 4a towards the Pixel 6a. If you upgrade phones about every 2 years like everyone used to with their phone contracts, the Pixel line will give you SO MUCH VALUE for your used phone towards a new one. It's almost impossible not to do it. So basically I got the Pixel 6a for an aging budget phone + $150 dollars.
love my pixel 6a, love the camera.
The only concern is rainbow flare , trying to get a replacement based on the issue but until now not successful, is a product issue or a normal behaviour in pixel phones.
I'm late to the game. I brought the google pixel 6A two weeks ago and it's my first pixel phone coming from samsung flip and fold 3. I absolutely love itâ€ïž!! The best part is I don't have baby the phone, like I did with the flip and fold 3 afraid that I would break them or get a small particule in it because they weren't dust resistant. I loved the flip and fold 3 but this is more refreshing.
My 6a has stopped opening links, eg if on restaurant site not opening food menus. I have Adobe and office apps. New problem.
as someone coming from a Pixel 3aXL with a rear fingerprint sensor, the in-screen fingerprint sensor in the 6a is not slow at all. It's every bit as fast as the rear sensor on the 3A was, maybe even faster. You DO have to get your finger/thumb in the right place on the screen, though; in that respect it's not as slick an experience to use as a rear sensor that is detented where you can feel the edges of it.
Yeah the 6a fingerprint sensor isn't the fastest but it doesn't ruin the experience
Would the iphone 11 be a viable alternative for a sub 500 phone?
Which do you recommend between Pixel 6a and Samsung S21 FE
I got this phone for a friend who is in a nursing home. All she wants to do is make and receive phone calls. How do you put the phone, contact list, and incoming calls on the first page?
What an excellent review. I don't trust other reviewers that wear a cap indoors, It's a bugbear of mine. đ
I've had my 6a for a month now. At first I absolutely loved it now I have noticed connectivity issues. If anyone has experienced this please let me know how/if you got the problem fixed.
I have the black pixel 6 but that white 6a looks dope af
Hands down a very good video which focuses on off paper specs đ
Agree mike..been using pixel 6a for last 2 mos and has flagship level performance with great cameras!! Super snappy without any stuttering or lags!! Pics come out great regardless of light conditions.
Speakers are super loud especially if you use an equalizer app from play store.
I like plastic back as it makes phone lighter and won't shatter.
I guess a disadvantage is if you're looking for a big screen .... only 6.1 inch and it's not as bright as a Samsung or a Motorola phone.... one major beef I have with this phone is its sucky fingerprint sensor!! It opens phone at 1st attempt only half the time. Another major disadvantage is the very slow charging time.
Currently I'm using a moto Edge 2022 and I prefer that phone but pixel 6A is still fantastic as my backup phone
I have recently shifted from an iphone 7 to pixel 6a, Its a good phone but battery backup is not that great(as I'm a heavy user it lasts 3/4 of the day). Camera, video everything is good, If you are coming from an iphone only thing you are going to miss is the vivid camera filter preset option.
Just ordered the 6a and I'm hyped đđ„đ„đ„đ„

@ 5:19 I'm w/ U there on ear buds but I have on my iPhone w/ the Lightening + headphone jack to charge & play or U can just get the USB-C to headphone jack.
iPhone user since 2012. Bought a 6a to tide me over until the iPhone 15 is released because my iPhone SE smashed after I dropped it with no case.
At ÂŁ299 it's an absolute bargain. There are a few minor bugs that annoy me, like the OS forgetting some my notification privacy settings, but then I remember the iOS 16 bugs weren't much fun either.
I find it very hard to justify ÂŁ849 now for a phone when the 6a in my view covers the bases for 99% of the population.
Great video....which would you recommend.....6A or S22 or iPhone 13??
Nice vid! I'm enjoying mine so far...and that $300 trade in credit..and free buds.. đ

I just ordered mine. I have the A53 and it's been a disappointment. No update for 2 months. I've heard Samsung doesn't prioritize their "A" series updates. Hopefully the 6a will be a better experience. Great video.
Pixel 6a is the great phone experience
my 6a has terrible rainbowing... like to the point where I can't ignore it at all because it appears as my phone tilts even the smallest amount, like when i am typing. i know all displays will have rainbowing, my old phone did, but only when i looked at it at almost a 90 degree angle which is obviously never going to happen in real life. but my 6a isnt like this, i notice the colour shift all the time. :(
The lack of a headphone jack concerned me, until I realised there are USB-C adaptors, even from Google for them. I wish I knew this YEARS ago. It's like such a non-issue for us headphone jack-people. Lol.
Mine keeps locking up during CZcams videos with either 5G or wifi. Never had that issue on my 4A5G. I hope they fix it.
Iâm on a budgetâŠ.
Is it a good idea to upgrade from iPhone XR to pixel 6a
Just ordered my Pixel 6A. Arrives tomorrow. Looking forward to the pure android experience coming from crappy MIUI!
With my OnePlus Nord I could get 4g in most of my local area. With the Pixel 6a it is mostly H+ with the same SIM. A step backward.
07:40 You can see the intentional finger just above the actual sensor itself to make it seem like it didn't work the first time. Lol
I'm loving mine. Sold my S22 Ultra and have been using it for the last 2 weeks. And while I am considering to get another flagship (like the 14 Pro Max) and also have a Z Flip4 coming, this is an absolutely great phone, not just for the price, it just is.

Great review, the 60Hz is completely fine, in fact, I couldn't care less about the refresh rate.
The most important things for me are the UI, camera and a reasonable battery.
the fingerprint sensor is a bummer, but I hope it won't be that bad.
I made up my mind, will buy it tomorrow.
Did you get it? How's the fingerprint reader? I'm still on a 2 XL with the trader on the backside, which is off course super snappy, do I'm a little concerned about that.
android 13 uses Gallery as default now...can't change it, per searching and calling Google. I don't use gallery, always google photos. Now I have 4 extra taps to add a photo to a text. really not happy.
Great video Mike.
