      @@Wretchedness1609 Nobody owe you friendship because you give them money, that's f*cked up.
      Like she said it's normal to think you want to be friend. But people need to understand why those boundaries exists. Sure, from what you see you can tell you'd probably get along with the person you watch, but beside the fact that they don't know you, they want to be able to separate work and private life. Knowing you are from their community feel like you represent the community and can cause many problems, may it come from the viewer or the streamer.
      Plus, suppose you want to befriend your viewers, you can't be friends with every viewer that wishes to be your friend. How do you choose who you will befriend? The ones that are more insisting? Encouraging this bad behavior. The ones that care about you the most ? As of everything, there should be a limit to the amount of care you put into streamers, passing that limit isn't healthy, you can't encourage that either. Plus viewers would start comparing themselves, they'd be jealousy. A lot of bad things that aren't worth it when there are plenty of better ways to make friends. Albeit, it still can create feeling of frustration, wanting to share with them as much is they share with us the viewer, but it's simply not possible as a viewer because of the numbers and all the other reasons.

I admit, I've wondered what it would be like to be friends with some of the people I watch, but also I acknowledge that they're people too. I do *care* about them. I don't like seeing them sad about things, but I also tend to feel that way about most people. I do think it's a slippery slope to confuse "I want to support them" with "I want to be friends".
    This is something that's far too complicated to fit into a CZcams comment.

    • @Nothingseen
      @Nothingseen Před rokem +45

      Nah, it makes sense. Streaming is a very strange thing, as the appeal is literally getting to know someone. They're not your friend, but it's very hard for you to avoid feeling attached to them, cause you know them. Vtubing helps immensely, because you are only seeing an avatar and don't do things like "learn their room layout" and "notice when they get a haircut," things that will happen with camera-based stuff. But you still learn what they like, what they don't, things about their past, stories about their parents... you learn in-jokes and references, they teach you things and they learn things from the chat. Of course you like them. Of course you want them to be happy. Of course you can imagine being their bud.
      However, they cannot have the same relationship with you. Unless you find a streamer where they have literally only you as their audience, it's a one-way intimacy. They're forced to see the chat as a gestalt identity, because there's just... too many things on screen flying past to think of it any other way. Just like how anyone doing any performance sees their audience as one being, rather than seeing them as a bunch of different people.
      So when you're watching a streamer, you're not actually spending time with a friend. Unless you and your buddies are all watching together. This is at the core of what Fauna said; "don't prioritize or idolize me, cherish your real-life relationships." Watching Fauna isn't cultivating a relationship, it's watching an entertainer. Even though it's a new, different, and oddly intimate form of entertainment, it's still entertainment. Just cause watching Council play uno feels like you're playing a game with your real good buddies, you're not. THEY are, YOU aren't. Just remember that and you'll be fine.

    • @PyraXadon
      @PyraXadon Před rokem +7

      The way I see it, supporting these streamers either financially or boosting their viewership count because you like them/find them entertaining is perfectly fine. It's when the relationship in question goes too far and one party struggles to maintain a proper quality of life as a result. Just knowing and understanding that you're not friends with the streamer but you enjoy their content/you're empathetic of their well being is in my eyes, a good start to recognizing and understanding your boundaries as an audience member. I'd hate for someone to feel bad for thinking that caring for the streamer's well being is being 'in too deep'. Humans are social creatures; caring for one another is built into our biology.
      Parasociality as a concept has always been around thanks to the advent of celebrities and media personalities. We often think that a parasocial relationship is a bad thing because of the extreme lengths possible, but in reality, the definition is just a one sided relationship where one party doesn't know the other exists.

    the way she relativised the experience of having a youtuber as a friend, contrasting it with your actual friends who truly know you and are invested in your life to some extend was pretty epic ngl.
    I've always admired her from afar, not sending supers or anything, just enjoying the chat and member experience and trusting in the process.
    she truly is a modern day incarnation of the biblical maria figure. equally motherly and gentle and wise and beautiful. I will worship her for that from now on. This is Faunarism. Hallelujah 🛐

    Very well put. Respect for her ability to articulate this in what feels like the best possible way, that hopefully gets through to the people who might actually feel like she is their friend. Hopefully this gives them some kind of catharsis, and hopefully they can continue appreciating her in a more mature way.

    Exactly why I watch vtubers honestly, there more down to earth and real than flesh tubers are typically, because they got that anonimity that lets them show us whats on the inside more, and that's what counts in the end.

    I think something a lot of people forget about is the fact that we only see these people when the cameras are rolling, when they’re in their element. When you see your friends doing something they love and/or are really good at, doesn’t it make you feel happy? Doesn’t it make you feel good- proud, even- to be their friend? And being a friend is so much more than hanging out with the “good side” of a person. Being a friend means supporting each other during your worst and building each other up when times get rough. Being a friend means sticking with each other through thick and thin. Laughing with each other, goofing around with each other, being yourself with each other, but also crying with each other, getting serious with each other, letting your true emotions show to each other. Now, I’m not saying that you aren’t capable of doing these things. Quite the contrary, in fact: I’m sure many people reading this comment are great friends. What I’m saying is that being a content creator and viewer and being friends are two very different types of relationships, and it’s important to remember the value you have with the people you already know. Your friends love you deeply, even if you don’t realize it, and maybe even more than you realize, and that bond is something that you should always remember and appreciate, no matter what

Plus, real friendship is something you have to earn and build, and its amazing to have.

    An alternate form of the parasocial relationship talked about here by Fauna is the type where people think the streamer owes them something just because they donate superchats or join membership. The shrimps over at Gura's have been extremely disappointing on multiple occasions, justifying their atrocious behaviour and overbearing kindness with 'care and concern for Gura', and because 'they deserve an answer'. Poor Gura couldn't even catch a break.
    You don't become a customer by donating to a streamer, nor do you become a business partner. You're still a viewer, and what you get from a streamer is what you get. No one 'deserves more'. Tons of people still refuse to understand this though.

    • @HKtraidon
      @HKtraidon Před rokem +4

      My honest opinion is the same with any continued subscription or media. You pay to support what you want and continue getting that content. Not for anything more then what you are getting.
      After all if the streamer can't afford basic needs etc they can't stream as a career.

    • @Cosmoman78
      @Cosmoman78 Před rokem +17

      Donations for me are the same as you throwing money at a Street Performer, because you like what you saw and you wanna see more of them. But just because you put $1000 in their hat, doesn't mean that you earned the rights to get personal or control their life.

      That reminds me of one time way back when Ollie got a request for a simple happy birthday... on a donation of 5 grand. She got disconcerted and kept asking "what do you want me to do?!", which is generally a bad move. Excusable given her inexperience back then, but still not a great move.

      It's kind of crazy how needy streamer fans be with how often they normally stream compared to edited video YT'rs like Jontron just casually dissappearing for a 1.75 years and then not a single person complains when he comes back.
      The only one I half sympathize with is the members (if a streamer does advertise monthly membership streams and doesn't deliver that's false advertising, but I don't think any of them state they make new ones monthly). Superchats entitle you to absolutely nothing, they can delete offensive messages without a refund.
