Great interview. Not the first guy to say that too much budget often gets wasted on expensive poor choices that don’t make it onscreen, neither. Sounds like professional integrity and sticking to the job can easily become ‘just get the money, run and have fun’ in this industry. Quite eye opening. Thanks.
I love this stuff! In my earlier life, I would’ve loved to have been part of the practical effects world.
As always... An amazing interview with Gene speaking from the heart. love listening to his stories. Hopefully one day I'll be able to talk about the small budgets and tight deadlines of the Art Department.

Thanks for the video I’m sad to hear of his passing he seemed like a cool guy with good stories and it’s cool he took the time to share his experiences. It’s nice to hear he passed away in his home. That’s how I would like to go rather then a hospital

Apparently, during a break from his 2billions Avatar sequels, Cameron took time to supervise the new 4K restorations and transfers for both Abyss and True Lies (John Landau confirmed to me, during the promotional tour for Alita, that Cameron WAS working on it. But Darth Mouse buying Fox halted it for a time). He's supposed to supervise the brand new bonus material AND might even FINALLY give us the extended cut for True Lies. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I love gene, and miss him, what a legend I grew up watching him on the terminator dvd special features, and the skotak brothers, just such great artists, super underated, and the film industry, in my opinion, threw these great, beautiful, artists in the bin, and look how shit films looks now, you guys stuff still holds up!!

Proof of concept: Wrath of Khan was made for a fraction of the budget as The Motion Picture, and shot by Paramount's television division to boot.
It was so cheap because half of the space shots were reused shots from TMP.
@@inhumanmusic1411 Not even close to half, as only the space dock shots at the beginning of the movie were reused. Plus all new uniforms had to be designed and created. They did make use of the TMP set pieces though, and kept the majority of the action on those sets rather than having to build too many others.

They mention in the "Waterworld" video that they got the submarine that appears in the movie from Gene Warren. I wonder if it was the submarine from "Going under" they used?

I remember staying up late to watch The Beast on NBC.
I really wish they could have included some clips from the actual productions. Surely there were some fair use cases? Stills alone don't tell me what the result really looked like.
I prefer to use the stills from the model shops, or model shop footage. Showing the finished shots just brings trouble from the studios. I've had to take down a couple segments only because I showed a still of a finished shot. But, I can usually fly under the studio radar by avoiding clips. As much as I love his make up effects work, this doc is only about miniature effects. Would be cool if someone else started a similar style doc about make up effects people to record their stories.

@SciFi Author B.L. Alley none of those actually had particularly high budgets hence the Enterprise interior being composed mainly of a brewery...
His critics his that, with big budget films, most of the money is often spent BEFORE they get to the technical and SFX aspects of the movie.
BUT with Avatar MOST of the budget was for the technical and SFX part of the film (hence Cameron's rule for NOT hiring Stars... aside from ones that are already his friends like Schwarzy).
As for the Star Wars postlogy, I'd blame the Studio and Kennebitch's interferences during the writing and the editing.

I have to disagree.
You are probably referring to the pre-Kelvin timeline films (that started with Star Trek 2009). Their biggest budget was the last one (Nemesis) with $60M. But with the Kelvin timeline, the last 3 films, budgets were between $150M and $190M.
I find funny the director of the documentary shows models from The Abyss, when the guy says that, sometimes, to much money is bad for the movie... If there's ONE director that knows how to spend the money to get it on the screen, it IS James Cameron !
Yes, but he's talking about what is leftover from the budget after producers and star actors like Dicaprio have spent millions on parties. The post production effects houses get a smaller chunk of money and have to stretch that! If that money hadn't been wasted, more could be done.

Yes, I know what you mean.
BUT Cameron almost never hires "stars" for his films (aside from Schwarzy for T2 and True Lies). Most of them become stars AFTER shooting with Cameron (Dicaprio became one with Romeo + Juliet then Titanic, but R+J hadn't been released when Titanic was shot).
Besides, he's so focused on the technical side of his films that, with Cameron, actors' feelings are less important than the Historical accuracy or the plausible technology shown on his movies.
Anyone shooting with Cameron know they'd better not behave like spoiled brats, because there's only one King (of the World) on set: James freaking Cameron 🤣!
I DO believe that Cameron (and probably guys like Lucas, Spielberg and (as an actor/producer) Cruise) is an exception to this behaviour he's talking about.
That's what they bulit Malta Film Studios water soundstage with for.
Many films are filmed at the Malta studio, but not the films in this segment. Gene Warren had his own water tank. And the Salton Sea near Los Angeles was also used.
All those hats and not one person was accidentally miniaturized.

We still run practical fx on projects..cause they work
Practical fx technically can be cheaper and more controlled for the story's sake..while they are a big asset they do have limits over cgi. but I think those limits help tell a better story..example..star wars original vs phantom menace..you get where I'm going with this?
