Great review Oliver. Although I didn't think it was as good as the first, I really enjoyed the movie.
I wanted to ask, do you get copyright claims for using the movie's music in the background of your reviews? I never used to until CZcams made their bots more sensitive and now anytime I try to use some of the film's music in the background it gets copyright claimed, and my only option is to take it out.
Hey Eric didn’t expect to see you here 😂
It wasn't half as good as the first one but still I enjoyed it. I'm sure I will watch it again. The action and the vfx were better this time. I loved the updated costumes too. It's very disappointing that even bad marvel movies make about 100 million dollars on its opening weekend and this movie which is better than the latest marvel releases is failing to make an impact on the box office.
As always, I appreciate your reviews (especially about the score - totally agree on this one.) In terms of the movie overall, I don't think a lot of the issues revolve around the central plot of the movie itself, but rather the forced nature of it having to be within the DC universe. The cameo of a certain character was so shoehorned in, and aside from being the pay off of a joke, felt like just as much product placement as the Skittles/Unicorn bit. Overall, I think both "Shazam" movies nail the Golden Age comic energy while also feeling like family films of 80s/90s, and it's a treat to see.
Let’s hope Guardians 3 and Flash will deliver, which I think are the last 2 superhero movies coming this year
Agreed
The bar for The Flash is set so low, while the bar for GotG3 is crazy high, even though both of their universes are struggling right now. If the Flash is even competent, it could clean up like Aquaman, while GotG3 almost had to hit Avengers-team-up level grosses.
Still have The Marvels (yikes!) Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Spiderverse 2, Kraven the Hunter and Blue Beetle. That is way tooooo much superhero flicks
I liked the 1st one until the whole family with powers thing kicked in near the end. When I saw the trailer for the sequel, I was, "Oh great, more family stuff and weak villains." I guess it makes it easy for Gunn to drop it now.
At least it's far more watchable than Dark Phoenix or New Mutants. But while I will miss Shazam's potential, I won't miss Levi or the series' approach to villains. Or the plots in general. Just some fun kid characters and one awtight 80s throwback.
Glad I’m not the only one..I really hope the Shazam family doesn’t appear in whatever comes next
@Brian Babin It was fun, and I did not mind it until they all got powers, and it became the heroic sickly family thing.
As soon as I saw the trailer for the sequel, I thought if a lot of people hated what I did, this would flop....seems they do.
I’d like to see them do away with the whole family in the future..If they slowly introduced Mary Marvel I’d be down for that but not everyone
@@cheddarcheese7928 Cannot see Gunn keeping this if this tanks hard.
Pretty tight script, great action, humor, setups and pay offs. Sure it isn't as good as the first but that doesn't make it bad.
Who asked for Shazam 2? Just why was this even made.
@@purefoldnz3070
LOL!!! Like virtually everyone who'd watched and liked the first film! One of the best superhero flicks from the past 15 years; if not even more.
Plus, it was originally (before the whole DCEU shake-up) fairly clear that Shazam would likely meet up with and fight Black Adam one day in the future.
Have you been sleeping under a rock anywhere the whole time?
@@subraxas Shazam told everything need to be said about the character. One and done. Not every superhero movie needs to a franchise. The original was an alright lower budget superhero comedy. Both Black Adam and Shazam are now dead.
Great what you said about the score, especially the main theme, definitely agreed. Maybe there'll be a director's cut later on when blu rays and so on are released, similar to how the Snyder cut did for The Justice League. Wicked review fella 🙂😊
Loved the first Shazam, especially the awesome villain played by Mark Strong. He made that film extra special like... So looking forward to seeing this, even with the flaws you pointed out.
I thought if you see Shazam! Fury of the Gods as a family movie it works well as a Jumanji/ Harry Potter type film, as a superhero film I think it does not deliver what older audience want in scale and maturity. But I liked the film.
I like these new release reviews you do Oliver and will you be doing it for the new Dungeons and Dragons movie I like the hear your thoughts. Thanks
Love the Cannon Films reference in your opening.
Good video as usual.
I'll check out this movie. I hope his Shazam survives the James Gunn snap.
Absolutely, since it's doing so well at the box-office.
couldnt pay me to watch this
For me the story of the daughters of Atlas came out of nowhere, there was nothing in the first movie establishing the Shazam acronym. So, in this film, you had to go back to the start with a mini origin story. The post credits from Shazam introduced Mr. Mind, then ignored his existence for the sequel. Why not use him to continue the story arc?
"(T)here was nothing in the first movie establishing the Shazam acronym" ---- apparently missed the scene in the first movie where the Wizard Shazam shouts out the names as he gives Billy Batson his powers? Oh, and Mr. Mind and Sivana do appear again in Fury of the Gods, but only at the end of the closing credits.
@@DoctorPretorious616 my bad, those 20 seconds from 4 years ago were the only mention. Hence "Steve" having to literally spell it out in the sequel. It still begs, why the children of Atlas instead of any of the others? Why just rinse and repeat the Mr. Mind scene without using him? There was even a meta mention of them still being locked up. I enjoyed the movie well enough but I don't think it was an interesting continuation of the story. A movie with a giant dragon and Harryhausen style mythological creatures shouldn't be mediocre.
The franchise's extremely-earnest ties to very well-known mythologies just never worked. The Seven Deadly Sins are just more cave trolls or Doomsdays. Atlas's daughters could be any divine beings, or aliens. For all its general mediocrity, at least the Thor movies had some fun with the bombastic self-serious Wagnerian impression of the Norse gods.
What's the end song at the end? Sounds like it's from a 90s game?
I really enjoyed everything about this movie except the title character. Levi is utterly grating in every single scene, and it ends up being down to Jack Dylan Grazier to carry the thing.
Sooo like...are all the family as strong as Shazam... or does splitting the powers result in everyone getting less?
Shazam keeps all his powers. The siblings each get two ie: understand any language and speed, fly and super intelligence...
great review. Liked the retro intro animation
It was awesome to see grace caroline currey in the Shazam costume
Love the new logo btw 😎
Like the new intro!
Only 66 opening weekend boxoffice.. Sad. Black Adam did over 100. Now it's 400 million worldwide
why is it sad? It looked like a turkey from the outset.
Great review Oliver, I share the same sentiment over the film.
I personally am not watching anymore comic book movies for an indefinite period after ant man 3. I’m going back to real movies.
It wasn't as good as the first film, imo, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I couldn't understand why Shazam: Fury of the Gods went with Mirren and Liu as the baddies when there is more interesting villains in Captain Marvel's rogues gallery(like Mr. Mind, Lady Blaze, Sabbac, Ibac, Captain Nazi, Aunt Minerva). Hopefully, we'll see more of Levi in Gunn's DCU. We'll see.
i love this movie it was really awesome and tons of fun.
looks awful and now its DOA
@@purefoldnz3070 I bet you are the life of the party. 😂
@@sid6856 imagine trying to be the life of the party and say "dudes have you seen Shazam 2 its super awesome! Its even got a hundred and two year old Helen Mirren as the bad guy!" You would be laugh out of the room.
@@purefoldnz3070 Why you so upset bc someone enjoyed a movie ? You might want to reveluate the things you are wasting your energy on bro. I enjoyed watching it with my kids. Laughed out loud like 4 times. Don't be that dude. Your cup of tea isn't someone else's cup of tea & it's ok. Don't have to be negative if someone doesn't agree with you. Try watching movies with less expectations and criticism. You might have actually enjoy the next movie you decided to massacre in your mind before even watching it. Star Wars movies are a exception bc I hate Kathleen Kennedy for what she has done to Star Wars. 😂🤣 F'in Disney.
Looks fun and good, and maybe that's all we need right now, will watch ASAP. Thanks.
Some Faneditor will probably edit and trim this movie heavily soon.
I was hugely disappointed with the story and characters plus way too much CGI, maybe its not bad but the way of too much slapstick, most parts I've may got a chuckle out of it, but the heart and soul was missing and characters that you route for turned into lackluster and shaft aside to one with the other...
But I'll praise Zachary Levi, Helen Mirren and Lucy Lui for their performances and only entertaining parts, but as for the rest of the cast were dull, boring and annoying
I'm giving it a disappointing 4/10, but I do say worth it to see in the cinema or just wait till both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and The Flash coming out in cinemas
Is it bad to hope for a few flops so we might actually get a few original films, instead of 472 different superhero movies set in phase 32 of a shared cinematic universe?
I enjoyed it, but it’s not magical as the first. As expected, I enjoyed the side kids again more. Freddie was great and Rachael Ziegler is a nice addition. It’s definitely not awful, and one part, tho spoiled in a tv spot, made me crack up-no it’s not a spoiler scene that the idiots ruined in the tv spots 🤦🏻♂️ a sign they had no faith. The director said it this weekend online that he knew the film was gonna tank.
Have you ever done a review of a Cameron Diaz film called "The Box"? If not would like to hear one its a strange and interesting movie 👌
This had a lot of stuff going against it I feel. James Gunn's confusing announcement that he is rebooting the DCEU ... well, sorta, has people scratching their heads as to which characters will continue and which won't. This possibly left people thinking why bother going to see this if the story isn't going to continue. Streaming too has its part to play I think with the downturn in superhero movie finances, people know they can watch it at home on their streaming service in a month or so. And of course the total backfire that was Black Adam hasn't helped.
Another aspect might be people seeing it as another woke project. It doesn't smack you on the head with that agenda as so many other movies recently have, but their decision to go with the Shazam Family first introduced in 2013 when diversity was kicking into gear rather than the more established Family in the comics stretching back to the 40's of Billy and his twin sister and friend and that was it might of backfired. Just the poster alone shows the main group of six main good guys consisting of a Black lady, a Latino and Asian guy along with the original Family of Billy, Mary and Freddy. With nothing more to go on perhaps people saw that and figured they would give it a pass as they are fed up being preached to in movies when they just want fun.
I loved the first film and was look forward to watching this film and I liked it. But not as much as the first one. If i had to say way it is because it is to long and the villains weren’t great because one of them was just evil but if we had a seen were the division between the sister was a little better then the movie would be a little bitter but as is it a 7/10 fun movie.
I enjoyed the film. It was fun. The criticism is valid, but there was enough sweetness, humor and surreal moments to provide some solid escapism. Sorry it is getting so much derision.
as a rule of thumb i like anything that reminds me of quentin tarantino (Lucy Liu)
Levee? sir..... dmh. Levi: LEE-VIGH rhymes with "knee high"
Good review oilver
There's a joke involving a letter that had everyone in the cinema laughing out loud non-stop. It's very entertaining, fun characters and the stand out one is definitely Freddy. Would definitely watch it again even if we won't get to see Levi as Shazam(always known the character as Captain Marvel) again.
I am sick to death of super hero movies but I love your reviews
Billy must had late growth spurt he is almost 18 and still 5'7 in the movie compared to his adult self who is 6'3
Excellent cannon logo. I agree was all to much of everything not a great story either. Be good if it was back to basics like first and have a solid story of just shazam and his girl friend, I thought with cameo of family and simple one bad to deal with would be better .it is a superhero movie as made now how much cgi can we put in it
Shazam was such a fun film. Heart in the right place
I will wait til watch movie at home 😊
I quite liked it
I actually enjoyed it not too bad.
looks awful. Avoid.
@Purefoldnz it's not bad I seen it kinda funny too.
Are we supposed to ignore the director's Alex Kidd t-shirt? 😲
I like how they cast a (totally not Zendaya) as his girlfriend.
There just isn't any creativity here. A shame.
I took my girlfriends kids to see it. The 10 year old talked about every aspect of it for days. It made me love it more.
Not seen it yet but it just looks like more of exactly the same as the first. Like 90s sequels used to be.
This seems like the Ghostbusters 2 of superhero movies
they had to fight Lucy Liu and one foot in the grave Helen Mirren in the GB2?
It’s not of all of the originals. Mary is a different actress.
I loved this movie. I would still say the first one was better, but I still really enjoyed this one.
Saw it last night, not as charming as the first one, and the plot lacked focus. Freddy was the highlight imo.
A frequent comment is Shazam should team up with Black Adam or Superman. On paper it makes sense. BA and Shazam share the same powers. Superman cameo went nowhere. Both BA and Superman are too dark and mature for Shazam. Shazam on film is a comedy. He has more in common with plastic man and peace maker. I could see Gunn keeping Shazam because he's quirky and immature. Right up Gunn's forte.
Love the new 80's style intro, very well done sir. ;)
This film currently hold an 87% audience rating and thats what I look for now. I think many critics these days are very much out of touch with viewers of films.
They want everything to be analyzed like it's in a film studies class and that keeps them from being able to just enjoy a good popcorn film once in awhile.
I remember when critics like Siskel and Ebert would evaluate a film on whether or not people going to see it would have a good time, not if it checked off the right boxes from Cahiers Du Cinema.
Audience ratings don't mean anything. They're not objective, they're not even representational. They get review bombed like crazy, usually from the same people. The DCEU anti-wokescolds bomb the Snyder films positively and bombed Captain Marvel, Birds of Prey, most Marvel films, and anything else with women or people of color negatively. Even the Tomatometer isn't a great measure of a film's quality, but at least it's representational of vetted film critics. Audience scores are filled with bots, aliases, and online brigades.
@@andrewklang809 Thats too easy an answer, plenty of DC films still had low ratings amoung audiences.
I'm not saying this doesn't happen, but you're acting like it happens every time.
@@andrewklang809 Studios lie about review bombing all the time, it's pretty documented. How about make a good movie with wide appeal? BoP flopping is not the audiences fault.
The problem is now almost everything is turn your brain off popcorn flicks. I hear people all the time list a mountain of issues with new movies then say that it's good turn your brain off fun.
@@mr.smith45 We just had an Oscars full of films that would meet your high brow needs.
And if you think it would change if the MCU went away you are sadly mistaken. COVID decimated the entertainment industry, if not for Superhero films, they would just pop out other franchise content.
They are giving the majority of viewers what they want . Thats how a free markets work and in most places the Film and TV industries are a business first and an art house second.
I'll watch it on vhs
Poor Captain Marvel
I’m glad it’s failing !
I loved it
First movie was a flop, i was surprised they bother doing another one.
I enjoyed myself watching this film as well as Black Adam. Speaking of which, I wish Black Adam was the antagonist in this movie. So many seeds planted and its all waste.
Not all of the original cast returned. Can't make that mistake. Mary Marvel was recast
I'd only watch it to see wonder woman
I don't think James Gunn and David Saffran ever intended to give Shazam a chance.
What does Gunn have anything to do with this? He was barely involved until after this movie was completely wrapped.
it is good. so many people hate it.
Not good. And I really liked the first movie.
All the family talk and the second half, his super family is nowhere. A superhero movie so let’s take away the superheroes? Bad idea. And the talk about weak writing.
In fact the best bit is Djimon Hounsou making a face!
I liked the movie
At the screening I was at one kid got so scared by the opening museum scene that he had a totally meltdown and his parents had to take him out.
The shazam sequel we'll never get is when he fights his most known enemy, black Adam!
Shazam is canned after this box office bomb.
The score was the most disappointing thing for me. What a massive disappointment Christophe wasn’t up to the task, very dumb to get rid of the original theme
*Lee-vai* not *Leh-Vii* 😝
I still won't see it..
I'm sorry but I mostly disagree. It was one of my worst cinematic experiences. I expected an action comedy superhero thing but I got a childish movie with humour that didn't work. Very bad experience, just suited for kids aged 6 to 12. Not recommended.
the movie looked so gray unlike the footage you have.
Went to see this last Sunday with my kids. Completely woeful . Seriously I'm struggling to think of anything positive about it. Flat as a pancake. Fair to say the arse has been torn out of the whole superhero genre.
1st half was good, hated the 2nd half ESPECIALLY the shitty/ Sleeping Beauty way Wonder Woman was used. Felt like a slap to the face to all Snyder fans, very disrespectful. I gave it a shot and got burned.
Ah yes DC they really should make a couple more movies and then just stop.
I thought the movie was bitchin’ 🤘
The first one was awful completely missed opportunity for a terrific character. Those kids scenes are cringe worthy
The first Shazam film was horrible, it was bad. Bad Script and bad character development and portrayal that is apparently made by Hollywood people who are alien to and most likely have no creative respect to comic book writers, creators, etc.
The second one shoves some unnecessary information to the viewer and also unwanted information... it comes off as someone invading your personal space while also insulting to men as a gender and how even a supposed teenage boy would behave... considering the teenage boy is actually close to turning eighteen and the way he is portrayed as well as even the very selfish way the female characters are portrayed doing actions with no consequences.
The actors are probably not the problem but the directors, producers and script writers indeed ARE...
Just glancing or KNOWING about any pre-1996 printed DC and Fawcett Comic books on the character of the original and real and FIRST Captain Marvel and even the original Marvel Family just makes you wonder why the filmmakers decided to make what they did, again with zero respect to the source material but apparently a lot of love for possible money made from a formulaic hollywood film that does not represent the better efforts.
Black Adam film had some bad dialogue with preachy commentary but at least that film had way more potential even when the original Black Adam's background origin was changed to fit the evolving changes that happened with the character when DC writers stopped making him a one dimensional heel character in the 1990s which itself was brilliant and eventually Black Adam as a character became grounded and complex human being who somewhat came to terms that maybe he screwed up in the past and changed and not because of other super characters to foil his plans.
Again the original Black Adam got corrupted by power... the film version revised his background and if better writing removed the preachy dialogue and treated the characters in a more grounded way and avoided the kid or damsel in incredible distress spots, the film would have been much better but the "Shazam" character in both films does not respect nor make sense coming from the pre 2000s comic book material... once Billy Batson utters the word, he gains the wisdom of Solomon and is not some "man boy" which I feel is a double meaning use in how the filmmakers are using it to sort of throw shade at comic book fans either intentionally or indirectly.
I hate it is too kiddy.
It's a super hero movie, they are all for children
Shazam 2: Cringe of the Gods
I loved the first one. This one was too long and just lame. I was literally falling asleep.
it was very cliched and dc movies dont feel unique.
It's SO annoying that certain "pale skinned" peoples around the globe can't have distinct cultures anymore, because that would be racist... IMAGINE if we enforced these same rules in Africa, or Asia...... How would that feel?
Add SPOILER in your video title if you want to be a good lad.
That film is a mess
James gunn looks like a lesbian woman ...
This is probably gonna be the last DC film I’ll ever see until James Gunn’s Superman Legacy comes out in 2 year as I don’t ever plan on seeing The Flash, Blue Beetle or Aquaman 2
I think James Gunn's decision to reboot the DC Universe imo was a huge mistake and only hurt this movie's chance to stand out on it's own due to incompetence from the head director.
Honestly the reboot was the best thing to happen. DC needs a more competently planned slate of movies, things were too chaotic and cringe the last couple years
I really enjoyed watching this movie. It was funny. Tons of action. Great plot. Great script. Great soundtrack too. The original was great bc we got introduced to him and watched him goof around with his powers. I didn't want to see that this time around. Been done. I swear some of you can never be happy and love taking a 💩 on DC movies but this sequel was 🔥 for me. 👍
Oh and I'd rather eat my own toenails than watch Shazam. More CGI crap.
Batman, Spiderman, Superman, that's it, FFS stop milking the cash cow, have you learnt nothing from Disney? No-one needs Wonder Woman, Thor, Captain America, Dr Strange, Black Panther
When are they going to realize Rachel Zegler only makes box office bombs
God, who enjoys this cringe? Smh
Great Review. The film was enjoyable to watch, and I'm a big fan of David Sanberg. Sometimes it can be hard to successfully pull off a good superhero sequel. It's been done really well with Spider-Man 2, and my favorite Superman II. But I still enjoyed the film and Zachary Levi was enjoyable to watch. Like the first film I really like how well the film reminded me of Big 1988. The actors were adults physically, but they still acted like kids, and they did it very well. I enjoyed watching that further explored in this film. It would have been cool to see a third film. I also hope David Sanberg returns back to horror films. I think he has a really good eye when it comes to scary images.
