    One of the big questions I have for German is, how to understand the prefixes for verbs like "er": erklaren, ergänzen,...., "Ab" abnehmen, ableben..., And many others like mit, aus, an, ... Etc, understanding how to interpret those prefixes would help us a lot because there are many many words in German and many of them are compounds with that kind of prefixes, Thank you, I like your videos

    • @FeriBlueBerry
      @FeriBlueBerry Před 4 lety +30

      Yes exactly, I have the same problem. Especially with an, aus, zu, ab, etc. I wish there was a rule for them so that we could always memorize it, but throughout my journey in learning Deutsch, I've seen many "exceptions" in every topic.

    • @shieldsluck1969
      @shieldsluck1969 Před 4 lety +59

      @@FeriBlueBerry As a native German i have to say there is no rule, sorry. Maybe sometimes a hint. For example "um-". That prefix often shows a direction changing of yourself or something else ("den Schalter umlegen"). Same in the slang version of "umlegen" (means: kill somebody [you change "the client" from vertical to the horizontal position]). But it's only a rule for "um-" (and "zer-" [means divide sth.]).
      Other prefixes have a little relationship: "ab-" often means to loose something but not in generally! An exeption example is "absahnen" (~ skim). Also "abstehen" (= stick out). The crazy "abfahren": sometimes yes ("Reifen abfahren", = [wear out tires] here you loose rubber) sometimes not: "Zug fährt ab" ( train starts - and nothing is getting loose).
      "an-" : there's often a starting matter, like in "anlassen, anwerfen, anschalten, ..." but there are also many exeptions: "angeben" (show off), "ankotzen" (be pissed off), "ansehen" (watch). Other words with the same prefix do not even have anything in common. 🙃🧐

    Hi Anja! I love this Venn diagram. You are an awesome teacher. Fubdog was a way we remembered preps that take the akkusativ case. This rhyme: Roses are red, violets are blue, aus, ausser, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu was the way we remembered preps that take the dativ. I still use these learning devices with my own students that I learned in Frau Beery's awesome German class in the 1980's and 1990's in Californian
