The Troop - On the spotlight (Pre The Sweet 1960's featuring Brian Connolly) (Ultra Rare)

- This band definitely includes Brian Connolly, & also predates his first known band "Wainwright's Gentlemen". This acetate is an EP and has two tracks per side. All the tracks are credited as being written by "McManus, Eldridge". Brian Connolly's original surname was "McManus". He was fostered, aged 2, by a couple with the surname McManus. He changed his surname to "Connolly" when he discovered that he was fostered. His birth mother's surname was Connolly.
Interestingly one track, "On The Spotlight", is exactly the same track as "Spotlight", which features on "The Sweet's" debut LP "Funny How Sweet Co-Co Can Be". On this LP the track is credited as being written by "Connolly, Priest, Scott, Tucker". i.e., all four members of The Sweet.

About 6 years ago we acquired a record collection that included a handful of original 1960’s acetates. We kept the acetates back because there were some very interesting items, & there was a lot of research to be done. We have now decided to sell these acetates.
The most interesting acetate is an undocumented early release from the future “The Sweet” lead vocalist Brian Connolly. The band is called “The Troop”. I cannot find any mention of this band on any “Sweet” website. Therefore this is a really important discovery! - Hudba
Awesome song, its magic every now and then a rare song pops up. Thanks for sharing, Sweet forever ❤❤❤❤❤ hi from Holland
Wow! That's Brian alright!
Brian 😍
R.I.P. sweet angel 💕
This was a sweet song later on
The early beginning of a Top Group.
Nice old song with Brian Connolly´s voice.
Very nice, younger Sweet Voices. 💗
with 60te Sound.
I miss the Band very mutch 😢😭🙁💔
@Ger Bee Sweet still does exist, but this is referring to the band's different sound. I think when he says he misses the band, I think he's saying he misses that 60s sound that no longer exists in Sweet.
Brian sounds Amazing
Awesome I love Sweet 💞😽🥰
Awesome thanks for sharing 🎉❤🎉❤❤
great to hear brian in fine form on this early acetate.
Yes it is wonderful
He sounds bit blues i think. Definitely got better as time progressed!
Great!
Brian Brian Brian! xxxxxx
Who ??
Bellissima canzone mi piace tantissimo.La voce giovanile di Brian Francis 💯👏❤️.
Трудно было узнать ,в этих ещё "зеленных " юнцах ,нашу старую легенду Свит ! Это были ещё ,первые шаги к своей карьере !
Blows queen away they were probably still at school when this was recorded lol
@@farrellvanessa sweet formed in 68 this is several bands before brian was in sweet so must be well before 68. Although the pic is around 68.
O der junge Brian & Mick 👍👍👍👍
Wow that's great, thank you!
Wow !!! I like This very, very much !!! Brian is singing here, like John Lennon himself ! P.S.: And This is The Ultra Rare really !!! ...And this photo was taken from their 45 RPM of the 1968-th year, where just they were like "The Sweet" officially !..
Interesting. I heard The Sweet's version of this and thought their version sounded 60s influenced / older than their other material. Now I know why!
thanks for sharing
Superbe!
Un très grand groupe......
Thanks for this
thanks
Blimey, forget how close the 60s are to the 70s. Nice find. Bit of a ' Blockbuster.'
Its nothing like blockbuster but the forunner to sweets spotlight
So, about 1/2 the song is the same as The Sweets evolved version. The Sweet cutout some parts and added others. IMO both are great however.
brian original surname is connolly is foster parents called mcmanus
Great! But I'm missing "Don't Go" from this acetate. Please give it to us!
@ Enno Dymmelmeier. Dear Friend ! I've inspected: there is not this song, named by you, here, on "YT", really. And it's so sad, indeed. But, maybe, it'll appearing here some later, if the autor of this channel will find it and upload here. Hoping very much too !
This pic has Brian, Steve, and Mick. Andy was later on.
Version originelle,brut mais excellente.
Isn't that Mick Tucker on the left and Steve Priest on the right?
badcoach2000
yes its a pic of sweet with brian also but the song is pre sweet with brian on vocals
badcoach2000 yes that right it's mick tucker and Steve prest
That is Brian singing and if you don't know that you are no fan
Arnie Ramsbottom oh Arnie stop being so dramatic 🤣
Not the full song
Not ?
@@pleun315 no its cut off
This wasn't pre-sweet. It was the B side of Alexander Graham Bell, released in '71.
Listen to it this is not the version on b-side alexander, it's a different version that The Troop did before they changed their name to sweetshop, The sweet finally Sweet
@@pejoha While this might be a demo, it wasn't played by a band named The Troop with these four members. Brian wrote the song with with guitarist Chris Eldridge (not depicted in this photo).
The Troop did not change their name to Sweetshop. Brian and Mick were with Wainwright’s Gentlemen prior to forming Sweetshop. That's Frank Torpey in that pic, the first lead guitarist for Sweet and he said they never had a band called the Troop.
@@stty1405 It's a EP circulating with these 3 songs recorded late 60s & the band is called The Troop including Brian C at least from Sweet, not sure it's any more sweet members, kind of hard getting any info. The pic is wrong yes, I found these tracks with some info a long time ago on the net...
some info & pics of the acetate vinylrevolutions.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/rare-1960s-acetates-including-an-undocumented-early-release-from-the-sweet-lead-vocalist-brian-connolly/
@@pejoha Yes. I've seen this link. The lineup featured Brian, Chris Eldridge and Lee Mordecai (guitars), Mark Conway (bass) and Martin Lass (drums). If the limited info found online is accurate that is.
You're correct in saying there's limited info out there. And it makes sense that it wouldn't be on Sweet's website, especially since Andy didn't even know Brian in "65 and is the one promoting The Sweet name today.
Generation X was the band in question according to Michael's Sweet book. He's covered those lads from birth to post Sweet.
I did have an opportunity to ask Frank (who's in the photo) if he knew anything about The Troop and one of the tracks mentioned and he knew nothing about it.
