Hopefully, Takom can break Trumpeter’s near stranglehold on the ship model market! You never know if their “A” or “B” team worked on a particular subject! Dragon dabbled a bit but probably felt the market wasn’t big enough. Also, there are still plenty of (non IJN) 1/350 possibilities worth exploring. I think, given some of their off the beaten path releases, Takom has the balls to jump in!
I wouldn't say trumpeter has that of a stranglehold, tamiya has a fair amount of ships too, and then you got other smaller companies eg ICM, but yeah its good to see something fresh, although I'm hoping they explore other ship concepts just like with the flak towers and 1/72 guns. Like, I'd much rather see a model of the Habbakuk project than another U-boat you know, I want them to take this wacky approach with ships
@@mikep3180 As for Tamiiya Mike, that’s why I qualified with “non Imperial Japanese Navy” subjects, same with Fujimi, Aoshima, and most Hasegawa. Other players like Blueridge Models and Very Fire are welcome additions as well. I hope Takom does well and doesn’t take a beating from Trumpeter like they did to Academy!
Takom should do the real Scharnhorst (armored cruiser) in 1:350. There isn't even 1 armored crusier kit avilible at the moment! and this would be a good choice for the first one.
Keep up the great work, Andy! Really awesome to see some more ship models! Ships are my favorite to build. Great to see WWI kits! I wish there were more Civil War/WWI era ship kits out there. Even ships from the Spanish American War would be awesome.
I love building ships as well. Yes it would be awesome to see more older ship kits. I'd love to see some of those french pre dreadnought protected cruisers. They just look so beautiful.
@@woodchild2093 Totally agree, Jason! Ships from different time periods from all around the world would be great. I’d love to build some from the Japanese Ruso War as well.
Thanks for the video! You should definitely check out Derfflinger's history, it is amazing. The British called her Iron Dog for her stubborn resistance to British gunfire at Jutland in 1916, where she played a pivotal role on the destruction of 2 British battlecruisers, Invincible and Queen Mary, both of whom sank with very heavy loss of life. Lützow is credited with sinking the armored cruiser Defence with her entire crew of 857 men, and shares the credit for Invincible with her elder sistership. Unlike Derfflinger, Lützow sank as a result of battle damage early the next day.
Great looking kits if (big IF) you do 1/700 ships. I'm working on one now and I think it will probably be my last 1/700 ship. However, I do know that this scale is popular with masochists worldwide.
The Gearing-class, even the ones with the dry dock, are all Snowman Model tooling. I believe that is also the same for the Derfflinger class battlecruisers. New tooling from Snowman model. To be honest I'll still go for the flyhawk renditions of the Derfflingers because they have deluxe versions with more photo etch.
That is correct, I've seen reviews on Chinese forums comparing the two kits and they're the same minus the full hull parts. What happens is Snowman Model produced these kits, using both old Flyhawk molds and some new molds, then delegated its oversea selling to Takom. Snowman mainly produces 1/2000 and 1/700 kits and the quality looks pretty decent (to me). Their upcoming offering interests me: a 1/350 DDG-1000 Zumwalt class, hopefully it would be great!
My preference is the 1:200 scale. The Trumpeter kits have so far have all been excellent. It would be good to see other manufacturers getting involved in this scale.
I made a number of the Airfix range of ships back in the sixties, but they never really took my interest as much as AFVs. I just upgraded to 1.35 scale for the better detail and also to help my 68 year old eyes and fingers - ! 😁
Wow nice kits! I guess I’m off to the optometrist to get new glasses and a good magnifying lens. I would love them to do a good 1/350th USS Saratoga though!
How good is that dry dock and crane! I've not got any particular interest in naval history, but watching this I really want to make some of these. Thanks!
Another great broadcast. Wish a manufacturer would build 144 British Royal Navy submarines, instead of the never ending German Uboats. 8th and 10th flotillas Mediterranean WW2 would be perfect, as these boats were one of the main reasons Rommel failed, being more prolific, sinking more tonnage. But unless you know different they are as yet not in production.
Thought that this was a newer video and it turns out that it is older........ I just got the Navy 5" turret in 1/35, wishing that Takom released both the US 5" and the Japanese 6" Triple in 1/72 so that they can go with their 1/72 scale main gun turrets. And it turns out that they already released (at least the US 5" twin) months ago. Too bad that its part of another kit that I wouldn't buy. Hopefully they do what you suggest, release the 5"-ers as part of a larger chunk of the ship. Takom should release the IJN 6" in 1/72 as the front and rear placments on the Yamato class. That would be a nice add on to the main guns.
I bought a 1/700th scale FFG-7 once in my innocence. Big box, teeny, tiny widdle ship. Too small for my heavily corrected eyes. Kudos to the artists who work in that scale-- some of their work is beyond impressive. I'll stick to moving foxholes, 1/48th aircraft and kits I messed up as a kid and want a second crack. Anyone know where I can get an old Lindberg USS Rudderow for a decent price? :-) Andy??
Takom is so adventurous - I would love to see them do a big 1/96 or 1/100 scale ship for those of us who like to drop radio control into models; something like a Destroyer Escort or a World War II German Torpedo Boat type 35 or later. These would be around 3 feet or less in length but would make for very impressive static or running models.
I hope they take the same whacky approach with ships as they did with other kits like 1/72 turrets, the ekranoplan etc. Project habakkuk and other bizarre concepts in the ship category, extraordinary stuff ya know
For some reason the US version of the SMS Lützow kit is misspelled ”Luetzow”😀 which is sort of dumb. But the correct pronunciation in any case is Lootzov, not Lootsau. OK?😉
Hopefully they did their homework and made the Derfflinger different from the Lutzow. The midship superstructure was very different between the Derf and her sisters. Derf had an antiroll system at the midship which necessitated removal of several secondary and tertiary gun mounts. I have a scratch built 144 scale Derf and did a LOT of research into it and the design differences between her and the other two of her class.
Interesting to see that Takom have decided to get into 1/700 ships? Although they look very good, they don’t look as good as Flyhawk’s kits (but I’m looking at this on an iPad, so I might be wrong on that)? As usual another fine review of what’s available! Thanks Andy and you have a good’un dude! 👍🏻👍🏻
Ah! I had wondered about the choice of WW1 German Warships (I’d seen that Flyhawk covered these two) and wondered why somebody else would also bring them out....that’s that explained then! I’ve only got the British Cruisers, Destroyers and Battleships and Scharnhorst and Bismarck, so far!
If the Derfflinger and Lützow kits were the same, they would not offer two different models. The superstructure is very different between the two of them.
1/700 scale is a very enjoyable scale for me, not SUPER fun to put together as things are tiny and you need patience but it usually doesnt take terrible long and then painting is extremely enjoyable, overall its a fun scale (1/350 is very annoying for me personally, i prefer 1/700)
Hey Andy this would be a nice model, the car that started the first worldwar..Das "Sarajevo Auto" und das Attentat auf den Thronfolger am 28. Juni 1914 - CZcams
Dry dock is very interesting, but twin gun turret in 1/72 is a really monster. Where is Southerland in DDR configuration? DDR Gearings were the only Gearings participated in WWII. In that point of view Allen M Sumner would be better.
I hope someone will make Derfflinger/Lützow in 1/350! And equally for example light cruisers like Konigsberg, Leipzig, Abruzzi, Aosta, ...... I miss these ships in 1/350......
i would like to find a plank on frame gearing destroyer iserved on one for 6 years and 4 more on a fletcher class 6 years in pearl harbor while arizona memorial was being built
Hey man it’s a little off topic. However, if you need any help during these busy holiday times I would be more than happy to help you ship things out. I live a couple hours but have some friends around Phoenix and would be more than happy to fly down and help you ship things out if you need any help.
its more like old Snowman Models distributed by Takom 1/700 CHARLESTOWN NAVY YARD DRY DOCK cat# SWMSP07050 1/700 USS DD-742 FRANK KNOX 1944 GEARING CLASS DESTROYER cat# SWMSP07002 etc.
I have been looking for a gearing class. My grandfather served on one. Early 50's. Is there any word on a 1/350 scale? I don't know if I can build something that small. I'll sure try though.
Very interesting, because offerings of ships on the market are extremely limited mostly to crapy Trumpeters, very old Tamiyas or costly and insanely detailed Very Fires and Flyhawks. Takom ships would be very nice addition considering the quality of their AFVs. Hopefully one day they will move to 1/350 scale as well.
I love 1/700 ships but the cost is so outrageous to the point I just can't justify paying out $ 50-70cad for a kit that has half the plastic of a 1/35th armor , it makes me sad.
So sick of 1/700 ships, utterly pointless. Why can’t these manufacturers make kits in 1/350, you know, the scale that everyone wants to build in. You even said it, “very tiny little ship” which means lots of details they can’t include. Pointless.
I just finished an old Tamiya 1/700 Fletcher class destroyer, and I am almost crying seeing the plastic detail on this Takom kit!
Hopefully, Takom can break Trumpeter’s near stranglehold on the ship model market! You never know if their “A” or “B” team worked on a particular subject! Hobby Boss and Dragon also make nice lines of ships that are non imperial Japan ships.
Dragons are just perfect IMO

love the story of the Sedlitz, barely limping into port. tough ship
I hope they do Seydlitz as well, another gorgeous ship
Tell Takom to model their ships in 1/350th scale. Then I'll buy some.
Great looking kits if (big IF) you do 1/700 ships. I'm working on one now and I think it will probably be my last 1/700 ship. However, I do know that this scale is popular with masochists worldwide.
Right on Andy
Takom is wonderful
Thank you for sharing !!!
The Von Hipper figure is worth buying the kit alone!
Hi Andy’s Model HQ, these videos really cheer me up, I look forward to every post, sooooooo inspirational and motivating. thank you
The ship kits are all made by Flyhawk, who make small scale kits with crazy details. Takom has just reboxed these. 👍
The Gearing-class, even the ones with the dry dock, are all Snowman Model tooling. I believe that is also the same for the Derfflinger class battlecruisers. New tooling from Snowman model. To be honest I'll still go for the flyhawk renditions of the Derfflingers because they have deluxe versions with more photo etch.
the German ships are definitely Flyhawk models but with some new parts. YT won't let me post a link but check out Scalemates.
I model 1/700 ships. I really hope they'll do HMS Vanguard Britain's last Battleship and the new QE class carriers.
I suffer from sea sickness, might stick to my armour kits
I own Flyhawk's SMS Lutzow, it seems as though Takom's Derfflinger/Lutzows are reboxes with the addition of a full hull option
That is correct, I've seen reviews on Chinese forums comparing the two kits and they're the same minus the full hull parts. It's a Big box for such a little model.
Nice review, Andy! Nice to see that Snowman has teamed up with Tacom. The later stepping up the game for Snowman. Great to see.
Holy Ship!! Takom are pumping out some kits lately!!
I have to get that Gearing-class destroyer. The Joseph P Kennedy Jr (preserved at Battleship Cove) is one surviving member of this class.
i can see it from my house, I live in Fall River
Thankyou very informative and interesting Excellent presentation Take Care
My preference is the 1:200 scale. The Trumpeter kits have so far have all been excellent. It would be good to see other manufacturers getting involved in this scale.
Really looking forward to the Takom limited edition with two ships, a zeppelin and a resin figure.
God I hope Takom does a 1/700 Vanguard and Nelson/Rodney in full hull and not waterline

Derfflinger, Lützow AND Zeppelin! WW1 nerd out activate!

Being a player of World of Warships Legends and having the Gearing as part of my fleet I'm very tempted by this model.
"Derfflinger"? I know a modeler that might build it just to say the name.
At least he will have a cool model after.
Hope for more 350 scale ships
Always found the Luttzow best looking ww1 dreadnought.
when I fill the tamyia paints up to the lip with thinner ... can I still easyly mix the colours ?

hi, i love you videos and i was wondering if you could do a jagdpanzer E-100
is there an eta on when these go up on the website?

Small enough to slip into a bottle.
rather have these in 350 , too small
We're just going to pretend that those enormous sprue gates are OK in 2021? Come on Takom, we know you can do better.
Thats old reboxes.
1:700 scale ship detail is terribly overscaled
Itd be nice if building a model could be as simple as your intro. Maybe not though.
