The Biggest Diorama I've Ever Built! Watermill in 1/35 Scale

- My friends, sometimes you design a diorama around the model, and sometimes you choose a model for the diorama. This was the latter case because a truck loaded with sacks of flour sounded perfect for a large diorama with a water mill. This is definitely the most complex diorama I've done so far, featuring pretty much every texture you can imagine - bricks, rocks, old wood, grass, dry ground, a cobblestone road, figures, and let's not forget the creek made from epoxy resin!

Disclaimer: I have a good relationship with a handful of modelling brands and stores, namely VMS, Michigan Toy Soldier Company, and AK-Interactive. As such, I'm happy to use their products/services, and show them in my work. In return, they support my efforts in this hobby, although my hands are not bound nor am I obligated to push one brand or the other. This was one of the founding ideas of the channel and I will always stand by this.

Dudes a g
Best channel on yt
Love seeing "muh frens" pop up in the comments on all other things
Yes. At least three other modelers have mentioned that they either are doing something they saw Uncle doing or are trying not to do something they saw him do in just the last week.
Gotta say that one thing I really like about him is his willingness to not just step but leap out of his comfort zone. Here he is doing figures like he’s been doing it his whole life, building things that aren’t tanks, and building dioramas. Yes Uncle, some of us remember when you said you’d never build a diorama.
So true. How many figures and tanks do you think there are out there done copying NightShift techniques? I bet it's a lot. Lol
You are by FAR my favorite diorama creator on youtube not only for your detailed creation but also because your helpful commentary. Wish you all the best!
Can we also acknowledge you are a legend for donating
Dear Uncle. Now everyone sees why you changed your style of releasing videos. Its a VERY long video, but VERY GOOD as well. It soothing, detailed and - most importantly - i never felt you would rush through the topic. And thats what you did back in the day when we had weekly videos. So, dear Martin, thank you. Great video (amazing build too!) and a very own unique style too.
There's just something so satisfying seeing the diorama come together
100% !
Loving the "in person" cameos you added man! Really makes the video production oddly feel more "professional" somehow. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO.!!!
Thanks! They were very refreshing, and it's something I'd love to keep adding in future videos as well :)
When the World needs him most he returns!! Looks amazing uncle Night Shift!
THE best 50 minutes of modelling I have ever watched……truly incredible work…..for a man who wasn’t sure about going into dioramas back in the day, too arguably the best diorama modeller on this planet……stunning, stunning piece…….👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
this guy not a modeller anymore , he's a truly artist.
50 minutes! This will be perfect for tonight, thanks for the upload uncle Night Shift!
As usual a great diorama with a superb finish only one flaw, I am fairly sure that if that soldier was driving a truck, he wouldn't be wearing all that kit!
that was the thing that jumped out at me too, and i had to scroll too far to see this comment!
I am nearing my sixtieth year and have modelled on and off since I was a young boy. Over the years I gained experience and some of the financial means needed to improve and enrich my modelling pleasure. You Sir are awesome! You are a leonardo da vinci of this wonderful hobby and passion we have all become enslaved to! Thank you 🙏 so much for sharing all your hard work and advice it is hugely appreciated. 🤗
This was a fantastic upload. The diorama was stunning. Thank you so much for sharing.
This model diorama building channel is by far one of the best here on CZcams in my humble opinion. As someone who has been doing this type of work for over forty years I’ve seen everything under the sun in terms of techniques and trends . Products good or bad come and go. Model kits horribly produced or perfectly made are everywhere. True talent and most importantly someone who genuinely enjoys what they are doing always catches my eye. Story telling and fun are paramount in diorama creation. You my friend are excelling in those areas. May your imagination and joy never end…
Friday night. Work done. Whiskey in hand. Dog on lap. New video from Night Shift. Perfect entry into the weekend.
Seeing all of this come together slowly just makes me appreciate the work you Put into all of this.Modelling is a great hobby and you help to make the CZcams community of the Hobby just simply a better płace. Thanks Uncle NS!
Again perfect diorama!!!
Everytime I screw something up on my model and lose spirit to build them, I watch your videos and all of anger fades away. You are awesome
This is by far the best one you've done. This diorama creates a story that's begging to be written. Have you thought about doing a railroad themed diorama?
Amazing work! After You painted the lower cobblestone sections, the "horror-look" was completely gone! It's a very nice and cosy scene!:)
20:45 usually, i just make a folder for the maquette i make and assign various pictures to the various features. Then i narrow the pictures down to match them between themselves and that's my final look. That way, i stay on track and don't end up trying to replicate every crack, brick or piece of wood i've seen. Pretty effective. Also, using sketchup, it's super easy mock-up facades and features using those pictures as textures.
I try to watch other diorama builder videos…but none paint their grass, like you…so I just can’t watch them. Your builds are the best, for the extra attention you pay to your ground work. Thank you for your videos🤘
Glad I get my natural stuff from my “back yard”. Hate to violate your “Trademark”👍🏻😆
Always a good day when you post a new video! Thank you for your inspiration!
i was REALY looking out for this one as a 15 year old modeler you have realy inspired me thx for that
When I saw the dancing 3D images first I laughed, then I thought of a diorama of Bing, Danny, Rosemary, and Vera doing the, "I wish I was back in the army" scene from White Christmas.
Martin, if you want to even out the surface of your wood stain try using a "rubber" as French polishers call it, it's basically a small cloth 'bag' filled with cotton waste that holds the stain, and you can wipe it over a surface to give a really even finish - much better than using a brush.
Sorry for using English terminology, but there's sure to be a video on it to give you an idea.
The best. When you don't upload I try to watch other modelers but I'm always disappointed. You run the best modeling channel on CZcams.
holy crap thats stunning... puts my simple "Wespe on a road, 3 figures, couple of oil drums" to shame .....
Oh wow the birch catkin bits as ivy leaves is such an inspired choice, love the small natural variation in exact shape and size versus store bought foliage
That blue-green color on the door looks like Haint blue, which was used in the American south to ward off ghosts. On one hand it's ironic that the pop of color meant to make it look less like a horror movie actually made me think more about ghosts, but on the other hand, if the haint blue was effective then the mill isn't haunted, so mission accomplished.
RT-DIORAMA Watermill, a true masterpiece 😁🎉🎉🎉🎉
Ur not the only one with this level of attention to detail, all modelers have the same problem. Yeah we can reproduce real world exactly in miniature, cool. After uve built thousands, then what ...
This looks spectacular! There’s always a place for both sides of the diorama coin. Scratchbuilding gives you infinite freedom, but these commercial kits look amazing too. Love it at always, can’t wait for the next one!
Only one soldier implies that he's the driver. He wouldn't be wearing a pack.
5% kit + 95% Martin = 100% Perfection. I loved the ivy leaves and the pillows of moss on the roof.
The best Diorama tips and tricks on CZcams
I don't know how it is possible, but this diorama looks like HDR photo. Cool effect.
My main thought here is....your followers love what you offer in its truest form...meaning we dont count the days and apply pressure for you to produce. A true fan / follower appreciates you in your natural form of creating & sharing WITH YOUR HAPPINESS THRUNOUT being a HUGE reason we watch. #YourHappyWeRHappy
Замечательная работа! Поздравляю с очередным шедевром!!! 👍👍👍
Dance The Night Away choreo had me laughing my ass off.
45:44 The painting on the soldier's and stuff in the bed of the truck are phenomenal.
The best diorama I've ever seen. The detailed painting really brings it to life.
Chlape máš to super, co si budeme povídat, no velká paráda..... ❤
This is your best one yet! It's been really fun and rewarding to follow your journey in modelling. Thank you, uncle Nightshift!
Night shift is the reason why I got into this hobby
This dude is an artists! My word the detail...
I just thought of a funny idea - Uncle Nightshift selling Real Earth from his Garden™.
Seeing you paint all this wood makes me think painting a wooden ship of some sort would be interesting to see
I can’t believe how long this video is! This is great.
Awesomeness i really enjoyed watching this thankyou
That building is so beautiful!!
OH HELL YEA.....the thumbnail alone got me very VRRY EXCITED! I don't even build / collect tanks and such ( i collect other stuff)...until your one of only a couple channels / hosts that I truly love to watch!
I bow in the presence of The Master. And your sense of humor is a nice addition. These kind of videos can get somewhat dry just based on the subject itself. A smile once in a while makes it all the better
Your eye for the details is impeccable..those wood beams looked so natural and real..I love all your content and I too enjoy the commentary rather than having nothing but music play as you build..This piece turned out simply amazing
2 words, Absolutely beautiful 😊❤🇦🇺🎉
Amazing craftsmanship as always!
The roof reminded me of Lincoln Logs from my youth :) Thank you for all you do!
New subscriber here...and I have to say, your videos are the best part of my day! I just love watching your incredible skill and also hearing about the hows and why you do certain things. I have learned so much watching your videos and my own dioramas are going to benefit. I am currently working on my first diorama in a really long time (at least 7 years) as I am just now getting back into modeling. I think I am a bit crazy, but my diorama is about as big as this huge water mill one you just did. I am scratch-building a bombed-out old bank with a Navy Seal team conducting a manhunt for a fugitive who will be hiding out on the 3rd floor. I have scratch-built walls and concrete columns out of XPS foam, a wood floor structure using wood popsicle-type sticks with cardboard floors and drywall, cardboard stairs, and a broken styrofoam "concrete" flat roof with protruding rebar. Of course, this means tons of debris on the ground so I am looking at a LOT of painting of the individual stones, bricks, broken joists, ceiling, etc. But, I'm approaching it with your "infinity" solution and tackling one small area at a time so it doesn't seem so overwhelming. I have a very limited budget and just used a lot of Christmas money to purchase some good tools and a small variety of paints but it is not anywhere close to what probably could and should be used on this model. But, I'm making do with what I have and trying to adjust the steps to fit with what colors and items I actually have. So far it's been quite enjoyable and my wife commented the other day that she is really impressed and it really looks like concrete - and a complete mess of a building (since it's been destroyed!) so that was nice to hear! Anyway, thank you so much for all you do and your willingness to share your talents with the world! Your videos are so much fun to watch! Eventually, I'll get through all of them and I hope to be able to join your Patreon one day to help support you. Take care, muh friend, and keep up the outstanding work!
absolutely crazy, like 3d rendered, crazy
Absolutely incredible episode from start to finish Crafsman!!
Sometimes you just know when you are in the presence of genius.
My dad always had a saying that sounds a lot like the infinity principle: "What's the best way to eat an elephant?" "One bite at a time!"
38:33 I know it is a diorama-build video, but boy oh boy I see a FOX T-shirt. MTB fellas everywhere!
Oh i know you're having fun, well done
Excellent diorama, RT diorama make some fantastic diorama buildings. The church is a really nice building, you must try it sometime
This was well worth the wait
I love how at the 30 minute mark when you assembled everything I thought ohhh wow!! that looks pretty good and very realistic and then you ere like ohh btw the base is nowhere near finished lol so much detail man amazing work!
WOW, what a build. Verry nice Diorama. Sorry for the late reaction, kinda new on CZcams. You talk about problems, and dived them in small problems. That's thinking in solutions. Thats how I do it. Thinking in solutions, makes life and your work easier.
Man, don’t let ‘em come down on your darker style, that’s one thing I love about your work. There’s a kind of Tim Burton-ish color palette inside your results, I love them. Your results look lived in, they have real personality, good work.
Always a great plesure to see you Mr. Nightshift...
night shift will always be my favourite diorama creator
A masterpiece.
I actually got a Chevy Ad before the video began XD
Fantastic! I love the way you put foam inside the building! And if you want to use Oil Washes on foam Buildings, you can! Seal them with Acrylic Medium, Flat or Gloss! There's no pigment so it Seals Better and doesn't obscure detail. Just make sure it penetrates Every Crack and Crevasse!!! I usually airbrush it, but sometimes use a Brush, especially with Brick. So far I've done about 20 buildings with No Melting!!! And nazca247 is right, you are known to everyone! An Inspiration!!!
one of best dioramas ive seen nice one Martin
Really A M A Z I N G ! I’m speechless 😮
MAGIC , WELCOME BACK , STAY SAFE 😅. 😮😊
Thank you for that Aladdin link! OMG!
Out of hundreds of channels I'm subscribed to, this is one of only 4 or 5 that I have notifications turned on for when you release a new one. Always a great video.
What a joy to watch you work! What an extraordinarily well planned presentation! You offer us all authentic technical expertise and masterful artistry wonderfully blended into an engaging vignette. This presents to all who see your incomparable handiwork a satisfying example of storytelling in three dimensions, with this exquisite, little moment held in place for all time . . . .
You should look into a small rotary knife or a swivel knife for cutting veneer. This will help with reducing the amount of pressure you need and prevent dangerous slips
Man kanns auch auf ganz hohem Niveau übertreiben, krass.
I ❤ you popping in to the video....your charming & delightful! Also i too see a difference in the end result of your current videos. But for the record, their all great.
Yes please to more episodes, we missed you!
That kit reminds of the Verlinden dio kits, back in the day.
Man, you nailed it once again - IN SPADES !!! This is just SO good - ideas, technique and your approach to showing your work. THANKS - you are my go to channel for good advice and inspiration.
Fantastic work, uncle! That creeper is amazing.
Martin, have you ever thought about making the same diorama twice but in different seasons or in different situations? I believe it would be cool to have a comparison between a diorama in summer and one in winter.
Great vid, building a Diorama is always fun! 👍👍
Dripping water from emerging pallets of the wheel would have been a nice detail. great work, BTW, as usual.
I absolutely Love it!
Your technique is realistic and not at all spooky or looking like a haunted scene?
The color scheme is so nice. I could never paint? My Mother painted. I draw in black and white. Make miniatures and design jewelry.
Your a magician mate ! Absolutely amazing.
The last two Fridays I've been opening youtube wondering "where the hell has night shift gone" now I understand, and it was well worth the wait! Bravo sir! Excellent as always!
Great work Uncle. Super glue's your answer for cuts. Stings but does the job. They even use it in hospitals. Found that out earlier this year.
Hope you had a great Christmas.
Superbe diorama, belle utilisation du modèle RT DIORAMA
bravo bravo bravo
This blew us away with how amazing it looks!
Two thoughts, the window panes reflect the light very uniformly, if they were separated and reflected the light as individual panes they would mimic how the old windows look in real life.
Second, I've found that wood stains applied directly to porous timber never looks quite natural, what is a very effective solution is to first apply a timber sealer, and then the stain, this makes it look like real timber, as it stops the over saturation of more porous areas.
"it was the exact opposite of good times..."
🤣🤣
This was worth the wait - but t need my Night Shift fix more often!
So, the diorama isn't 100% scratch built. . .neither is the truck! You, 'my friend' have the ability to turn these, starting points, [shall we say?] into finished stories. This was a mesmerising video [a story unto itself] and a delight to watch. Thanks again for all the hard work that makes your projects SO outstanding.
p.s. I think when buying prepared kits many makers feel obliged to stick to the instructions. You've blown that notion out of the water and demonstrated how important improvisation is, a cool legacy in my mind! Cheers.
I love this new long format :D
