Ooooo fantastic! Japan has been one of our most memorable trips. Our eldest boy (3 years old) still talks about it. Our greatest advice is to avoid peak hour. Wowser, that is insane lol you can easily avoid it by planning ahead.

Airbnb in Japan is a must! save so much money we got an apartment in Shibuya for 6 people in Tokyo $50NZ each a night. Great tips! The food section made me so hungry needed a late night snack hahahaha

Excellent vid guys. We've been to Japan 3 times and still learned new stuff from you. We're currently trying to book accommodation for the Chrissie New Year period. The problem with Airbnb is the number of listings was cut by about 90% a few weeks ago due to new local laws. So cheap hotels just pipping airbnb for a family of 4 at the moment. Hostels charge by the head and so are often more expensive than cheap hotels and airbnb. Anyway the whole family just watched this and we all gave it 2 thumbs up each. 8 thumbs 🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒

Hey Tina, your videos are the best timing for us right now. Only 10 days till we leave for Tokyo. Did you hear what happened with all the Airbnbs in Japan? Well, 80% of them were delisted, including ours, because of a new law requiring hosts to have a particular licence.
Speaking of taxis. On our last trip a few years back we went to the wrong airport in Osaka when we were leaving Japan. To get to the right airport we had to get a taxi so we made it to our flight. $280 !!!!!
$280!!! wowser that is really expensive. Lesson learnt haha ;)
Yeah heard about the new legislation for hosts. Hopefully they will be back soon with decent prices, at least better than hotels. AirBNB apartments/homes have much more space for families than hotels in Japan.

Our host contacted us and said we could still stay at her place. She's also given us a small discount. Basically waved the cleaning and airbnb service fee. We just have to pay cash when we arrive.
What were doing is probably considered illegal but its really our only option. Hotel rooms are too small. And the only airbnbs available that are comparable to what we had are crazy expensive and in locations far from train stations.
Anyway, it actually worked out really well for us. We got a 100% refund. Plus Airbnb has given us a 100% credit as well to use on another trip. So basically scored free accomodation for our next trip. Just hope it works out with our host.

Food in Japan is literally so cheap and better than our food in the US. When I got back everybody was like "oh it's super expensive out there right?" I'm like "no, actually it was cheaper... other than staying somewhere."
If you eat only local food and avoid imported stuff, it's super cheap to eat there. We would eat breakfast in our airbnb (usually eggs or toast because we weren't super into japanese style breakast), grab a combini lunch for $3 and then eat out for dinner for under $15.

I went to Japan in 2015 and although we could indeed spend our time there on a budget we got so excited and spent almost double of what we had in mind but it totally worth it! No I am planning to return this year in October but this time I have 3 young children and I am worried mostly about things I want to visit that it can be really tiring with 3 kids apart from the fact that it will be quite pricey. Your videos will totally help me plan in advance! Thanks for the content.

Yes I was shocked I paid $18.00 bucks for a soup in Sydney. It was a tourist restaurant BUT that was expensive! The soup was really good though 😅
Cool tips, Tina. Japan is much cheaper than Australia, in my opinion.
The food is definitely cheaper than Australia. Another addition in what I call the Holy Gyudon Trinity is Sukiya (along with Matsuya and Yoshinoya). A beef bowl set is around ¥500 with salad and miso soup.
As for transport, yes, you can get those day tickets for cities or if you're just after convenience of not having to pay each time, get an IC card. The ¥500 deposit for the card gets refunded when you return it. It saves time and hassle if you're in a rush at the station.
Air BnB has become more strict in Japan with laws enacted that have reduced the number of providers. You can still find some amazing Air BnB gems though.
I couldn't agree more that Japan is cheaper than Aus. Ooooooo have to try Sukiya and IC Card next time we visit! Great local advice, Thanks Lin!

I went to japan in 2019. And we stayed in capsules and 2 star hotels( they were very clean) in osaka. And then stayed on Airbnb in tokyo for a week for $150. I gave myself of a budget of taking out $200 in cash and that would last me at least two days. I used my credit card in places like Don. And the most expensive was USJ. And Disney Tokyo.

Thanks Vanessa =) In my opinion, Japan is one of the most family friendly places we've been to. There are so many things to enjoy for the whole family. We stayed for 3 weeks in 3 major cities (Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo) and I feel like we only scratched the surface lol The only thing to look out for is peak hour times on public transport. DO NOT even attempt it 😆 it is insane how busy it gets. The Japanese people are wonderful and will probably try help you through it but you guys will come out of it traumatised 😂 CZcams the vids to understand haha. This can be easily avoided just plan ahead.

Actually i did found Japan wasn't as expensive as i thought it was, not cheap but cheapER than expected. You can go around and make a budget trip and still be able to enjoy a lot.

Hi. Good video. We only visited Tokyo when we were in Japan. It was cheaper than what we expected. I wouldnt say cheap, but it was ok. And this was Tokyo so most of Japan shouöd be cheaper.

Thanks for watching! In Japan there are a lot of pharmacy, daiso, supermarkets type shops around that sell diapers/baby milk. It also depends on the area you stay but main populated areas it's easy. Probably a 10 min walk worst case. If you're lucky the convenient stores do have diapers that is the right size. So I wouldn't depend on them just in case, as for baby milk I'm actually not 100% sure if they have that there. Hope that helps =)

Hotel is not just expensive but small - but i guess there are alternatives like airbnb, but im still a bit weary about using airbnb and actually they just had a new legislation which made it harder for airbnb owner in japan to do airbnb - they have to get a license now.

Good point about the hotels, it is very limited in space. Unfortunate about AirBNB getting the new legislation now but I guess there needs to be some sort of regulations. I believe they will be back real soon.

Japan used to be very expensive. Not anymore. Tokyo was the costliest city in the world a decade ago. It seems like that reputation is still there in some people's minds. Personally I'm surprised if people still say that Japan is expensive.

I'm looking at taking my wife and 6 kids. Two concerns are moving around and where to stay.
Should totally try, it's a fantastic experience. Very easy to get around with public transport. Make sure to have access to google maps. that's a life saver for directions and trains to catch.

We travelled to Japan last year as a family of 5 (from Australia too!) and we couldn't believe how cheap we did it. We felt like everything was cheaper than Australia, especially food!!! We also stayed in Air BnBs when we were there - so cost effective!
Would love to know which station was your closest when you were in Osaka - currently booking our Osaka accomodation but not sure on which area to stay in since we didn't go there last trip. Thanks!

Thanks so much for watching :) Airbnbs pretty much saved our budget when we were there, but I've heard since they've tightened a lot of the regulations, so hopefully you guys still find some really great Airbnbs at good prices! Our closest main station was Tennoji which is a little south of the centre where the zoo is. Lovely area with great food options and a big mall nearby.
Just found your channel, and thank you. This helps allot. I have been travelling solo many times, but next year for the first time with my girlfriend en little girl. I only have 1 question. How is public transport with a stroller? My little girl will then be 4 years old. So i don't know if i should bring the stroller or just carry her when she is tired of walking.
In Australia you can get Travelodge or motels in Melbourne for $125/night .still better than where you stayed in Tokyo and cheaper .I thinks the reason you said $460 is two nights accomodation price in Melbourne because you are just promoting AirBNB .very sad to hear your comments about accomodation prices in Melbourne.I live in Melbourne.

Hi Tina, would it be stretching the friendship too much to ask for a link to your Tokes Airbnb to see if it is anywhere near where we've been looking. We're looking now for January and with all the delistings there is stuff all (good and sleeps four) stuff available so far. What is available is cheaper than an average Aussie motel room but if we can more for sushi that would be good :)

This is great. Short but informative. I would love to find out what’s the best way to “carry” the kids? We will be traveling in coming May and our 3yo and 1.5yo are tagging alone. Would you suggest to bring along stroller? Or baby carrier like the one you are using
From our experience, bring one of each. Try to prioritise the 3 yo to the pram to sleep and the 1.5 yo to the carrier. This will help reserve some of your energy since the 1.5yo is lighter to carry in the carrier. We found most of Japan pram friendly. Sometimes you come across stairs and you may have to lift the pram. Otherwise look around you can probably find a lift somewhere close. Also the pram is awesome to help carry your bags lol Last advice - don't travel with the pram during peak hour.

It's definitely possible! Our Airbnbs averaged around $700-800 for week long stays and then it all comes down to how much and what you eat and attractions. I mean, we couldn't stop eating cos the food was so darn good.
HI, Just a a question? Ive been looking at airb&b , the prices they advertise are good, but then you have cleaning fees and other fees for another couple hundred dollars. Am I missing something. has anyone got any tips because I can't really find that much on air b&b for less than $150 Au, help! oh, love your video:)
Hi Denise! Thanks so much for watching our video :) Yes, cleaning fees are a part of it and the other fees, I believe, are Airbnb fees. Most of the time it still works out cheaper than staying in a hotel though. What time of the year are you looking at?

Very residential area but close to a lot of things and next to yoyogi park. The station area has a lot of restaurants and a nice local grocery store. Aussie Aussie Aussie! haha

Thanks so much for watching! If you take the Shinkansen bullet train, from memory, we paid around $120 USD per adult - pretty steep, I know. But, gets you to Tokyo in 2 hours. Will you be getting the Japan Rail Pass?

@@mattiesonofmonetkey20 Depends how long you're going for. But, yes.. there's so much to do just in Tokyo alone. We spent 9 days in Tokyo and still barely just grazed the surface. Whatever you decide, I'm sure your family is going to have an absolute blast. It's such an amazing place for kids and adults alike!

Hi there, we didn't rent bikes in Ueno (i only know of the Ueno in Tokyo) we rented bikes in Nara and Kyoto. I can help you with those places if you need =)

Thanks so much for watching! Here are the airbnbs we stayed in for Kyoto and Osaka, unfortunately the Tokyo one doesn't seem to be operative anymore. Kyoto one we found to be a good location near temples and 5 mins to the station. Osaka is about 10 mins walk to station and is on the 2nd floor. Probably could pay a little extra to be more central since your time is limited

Hi, I was wondering whether you guys could bring vitamins or emergency meds for your kids? or did you just buy them when you arrived in Japan? Usually, every time we travel domestically in our home country, I usually pack meds for our toddlers or buy them in the local store that sells the same.
