Westjet is to Air Canada what Virgin Atlantic is to British Airways or Virgin Australia is to Qantas.
In short, they are the upstart cool new-comer wanting to give the incumbent national carrier a run for their money. Westjet recently invested in some brand new 787 aircraft and launched new international routes with a brand new business class product. I was lucky to fly on one of these routes on a recent work trip. Yes I paid for this ticket in full and no I didn’t get a freebie from the airline. They didn’t even know I was coming - that said the Cabin Service Manager did recognise me in the departure lounge and welcomed me on board which was lovely.
So what were they like and are they up to the standard of Air Canada?
This Westjet 787 business class flight review covers my journey from Toronto to London Gatwick on the new Westjet business class product. This trip report is biased in that they are my views and my views alone - you may have a different experience but from what I saw I think you’ll love flying Westjet.

I'm based in Calgary. Fly Westjet alot but have yet to give the 787 a try. I am hoping VERY much for Westjet direct Calgary to Sydney or Brisbane. We have never had direct flights from here to Aus before. 🇨🇦🇦🇺🇨🇦🇦🇺

You need to look beyond London when saying you are the account manager for the UK. Why not fly into Mnachester, Birminghem, Newcastle or Glasgow?

Being a Canadian, it is great to see you like the WJ product. It is wonderful they service us out west with nonstop European service that avoids a stop in central Canada.
AC has done it from YVR for over 30 years. LHR, ZRH, DUB, FRA and even CDG at some points

For an airline that never had a business class product until this year, they have an excellent product
I travelled for the first time on WestJet a couple of years ago. I used to usually fly Air Canada before but I've switched to WestJet now since my experience has been so great - the service is so much better than AC
Great video Dennis. The special note from the cabin manager is a very personal and professional touch and does make you feel special. It is all about service and being feel welcomed.

Thanks for reviewing Westjet, Dennis. I really enjoy your reviews, although most of them don't apply when flying from Canada. Westjet is based in Calgary, where I live, and every time I fly with them, the service is great. I have been watching you for about 2 years now and can't understand why you haven't yet made 100,000 subscribers. You are the best of the flight reviewers on CZcams.

The personalisation that they're doing is pretty awesome! And love the fact that the crew (or at least one of them) knows your channel!

I think the fact that you set out with a positive attitude Dennis means a lot. You look for the good things and seem to get the best from the crew due to this and when you do find stuff that you don’t like you report it objectively and realistically. I do exactly the same when I travel and almost consistently get good experience in return. Cheers.

I have memories of flying WestJet in their early years when they flew old, leased 737's where each plane had a different livery, and the flight attendants and other staff made us all feel special. Glad to hear that even though they've gone uptown with bigger planes and long haul routes Westjet still puts the customer experience at the top (right behind safety.)

Just nothing to fault and everything to commend. I saw another comment that WestJet only started a BC this year. Just yet another example of how an LCC can teach the legacy airlines some lessons, and to come up with this new product 100% spot on the first time is a great achievement.
Somehow it seems like that WestJet is trying hard to lose its humble LCC roots and is trying to be one of the full service carriers. This all start some years ago when they migrated their Passenger Services System from Navitaire to Sabre Sonic and signed interline agreements with various carriers.

Always nice to catch an upload early. As usual, a fantastic review of what seems to be a fantastic product by Westjet. I always do enjoy how comprehensive and concise the reviews are, plus that little bit of 'being human' in the beginning when talking about your flight made me smile, we're all human and coffee does indeed help. I'll honestly consider Westjet after seeing this should I ever find myself on a journey that has them as a carrier for that route, cheers to another great flight review Dennis!

This is WS finally providing a decent alternative to Air Canada into a UK gateway airport. The hard product has some similarities to the AC biz cabin minus the crumbs stuck in the seat and general filth. The cabin crew seem friendly which is refreshing compared to the (usually) indifferent AC personnel. Very much worth considering for my next flight through Europe in February.

WestJet is my favourite Canadian airline overall. They give great legroom in their economy seats. I have never been disappointed.

You won’t be on WestJet out of Sydney. Likely Qantas equipment in a codeshare. WestJet doesn’t fly to Australia.

3:26 HELP HIM GET THERE
Love WestJet! Hardly an upstart airline, as it has been serving Canadians with a smile now for 22 years, but certainly a recent entrant into the transatlantic market (flying 737s since 2014) and Dreamliners since 2019. This is WestJet’s first year with business class and they are really trying to make it memorable. I recently travelled from Calgary to London Gatwick (return) in Premium Economy and the service was equally personable. WestJet is now definitely my preferred transatlantic carrier. My one disappointment with the Dreamliner is that, to accommodate all that headroom, the overhead bins are too high for me to reach!
