I do love the idea of the Blood Swords showing up to the Devastation of Baal and the conversation going,
Dante: "Are you guys one of ours?"
Daggan: "Well we are called the BLOOD Swords."
Dante:"...screw it, that's good enough for me."
When your battle brothers ask you to go to war... you only ask " who's battle barge we gonna take " ( the town reference)

The star dragons are probably what Ferrus Manus wanted his sons to be.
Yes. True strength is not in your augmentations but in your brothers and in the ability to rally them to go beyond limits.
Manus wanted his sons to be Salamanders?
@@tomasburian6550"the flesh is weak, but deeds endure" is the phrase Vulkan said to Manus after a fierce campaign that had rendered even the primarchs worn. Ferrus wanted his sons to be strong. And get stronger. Instead they would seek to replace their weakness with metal replacements. But manys knew his words and reprimands would run hollow aslong as the xenos metal covered his arms. Instead becoming strong Iron Hands reduce themselves to machines. That is the tragedy of Iron Hands and Ferrus Manus's death.
"Are you seriously crusading alone"
"No, I am with my battle brothers"
Congrats you Just unlocked coop campaign.
Xenos/heretics/traitors : *scream in agony*
There is something to be said for the possibility that the Star Dragons being uncommonly nice for Iron Hands is a result of intentional selection by that parent chapter to be rid of a faction of their own membership who significantly deviated from the norms of the chapter in a fashion now unlike the Black Templars being selected from among the Imperial Fists. They were entirely too nice, so the Iron Hands sent them off to found a new chapter simply so they could be rid of the non-conformity in their ranks.
Maybe they were the a part of the Iron Hands that followed Vulcan after the death of Ferrus Manus?
@@Yumao420that could be a good reason for their behavior.
@@Jamhael1 codex acceptable reasoning. Interesting to think that an amount of time could change a space marine and they way they think.
@@TerribleContentz there is even an Ultramarines book (I don't remember the name) in which Marneus Calgar became shocked of the barbaric traditions and callous disregard for civilians of an Ultramarine successor chapter that inhabit a very bleak, harsh and dark death world during a Tyranid invasion to the point of punching its chapter master and at the end of the conflict that chapter broke any bonds of brotherhood with the Ultramarines.
@@Jamhael1 that's actually very cool, I'd love to know the loyalist chapter hailing from ultra marines and yet hates their parent legions guts
Ah yes ritual scarification the Salamanders have never done that.
Well to be fair, Stormwalkers aka pre-Ferrus Iron Hands might have not been the most chill dudes but they were known to coordinate really well with mortal auxillia. I lot of legions worked very differently before meeting their primarchs and a long separation should be able to do the same. After all Silver Skulls exist.
Ferrus may have made his legion worse. The most fanatic tendencies came from the Meduson recruits
Yes you really know who the good guys are when they stay that way even in hell.

Blood Dragons not being real Blood Angel but being accepted among them despite this is probably due to how chill they are.

So the blood swords and star dragons basically have a chapter wide bromance??
Technically, yes - I can imagine the different levels of it, going from buddy cop to brothers-in-arms, and all in between.

Take an ironhand a salamander apinch of ultramarines scatter over bed of rice, and you have StarDragons

The Blood Swords aren’t the only ones to have a Dreadnought chapter master, Carab Cullen of the Red Scorpions is currently a dreadnought chapter master
Yes, and Arch already made mention of the idea of chapters whose chapter master was interred in a dreadnought after being made chapter master.
For the Blood Swords, they made a dreadnought the chapter master.
That would be like the Wolves making Bjorn chapter master when Grimmar croaks.
@@elysiankentarchy1531 I know it happens I’m just giving another example

The Star dragons are said to be from the iron hands, crazy when you think about it?
The results of Ferrus Manus attending a workshop with Vulkan instead of Fulgrim
my guess is they were iron hands who got out of the istvan massacre w the salamanders who survived and hung around the salamanders a while and eventually adopted things from them and seemingly their demeanor rubbed off on them
@@Nomadic_Gamingis not surprising if true
It would be interesting to learn more about the Iron Hands through the eyes of their diaspora after the Istvaan V. Though taken in by other Legions and trying to find their own way sounds very interesting.
Ah! I remember these two chapters in from the short story 'Accursed Eternity' - a part of the 'Architect's of Fate' anthology. (Great Anthology of the old 'Space Marines Battles' series - really recommend.)
Even though it was, as I said, short, it really did a good job conveying the comradery between them.
It's great to see a video about these lesser known heroes. 🤟
I wouldn't think that being a humorless dour individual is a genetic trait within the iron hands. That's just how Medusa is. And even then you get guys like sabak Wayland who has humors with his raven guard buddy cop that goes above and beyond what you expect from the iron hands.
Yup, far too often people don't understand that genetics dictate much less of your personality than you realise. Any Iron Hand dropped in Nocturne and forced to live like a Salamander would learn their values and adopt them, no matter what his parent Legion is. Hell, the entire point of successor chapters is that they can be supremely different as their parent Legion, but Arch is not exactly a master of nuance.

Merry Christmas Arch, glad to help spread some cheer even in the 023.M3 and thanks for all your hard work on your content.
One other thing on Daggan. At Baal he stepped between Gabriel Seth and Mephiston to stop them from going at it. Being between those two is a position not even an Astartes would want to be in.
So we have two later founding chapters that act like two separate chapters combined who are buddy buddy with eachother.
My first thought is cursed founding chapters where they tried to combine geneseed.
Bjorn the Fell Handed lead the Space Wolves for Centuries as a dreadnaught.
As the First Great Wolf after Leman himself, the Wolves consider Bjorn to be the "Soul" of the chapter and stubbornly refused to let Bjorn die, even going so far was ignoring their own protocols as the Space Wolves tend to save the Dreadnaughts for marines far less damaged than Bjorn was.
interesting lore on these two chapters, we could sure use more about them.
My headcannon is their both loyalist alpha legion descendants that began as trained Blood Angels and Iron Hands mimics, and when the heresy happened they just kept doing what they were doing since they never got told to do anything else and eventually the Empire just assumed they had made them in one of the many lost/forgotten/hush-hush foundings.
LORE FOR THE LORE GODDDD!!!!!!
What if they are both hybrids? Like the star dragons are obviously iron hands, and salamanders. Then the blood swords are blood angels, and thousand sons. Makes the combined penitent crusade all the cooler
Perhaps the gene-seed is iron hands but the founding cadre are Salamanders. That way they'd have the stable gene seed and a good attitude.
Bloods and Crips... but with more blood, guns and chest hair.
So glad you covered this one, Arch! I saw it mentioned in comments and wondered. Reminded me of Baldur's Gate 2 when Minsc dies in the fight with Irenicus, but choose to leave the Lodge to join the PC in Hell merely because the PC called him.
the cheeky little salamander image poking up was great
Just loved a Salamander sliding out of the corner :D
Another Point for the Star Dragons Being sons of Vulkan. Is that the Salamanders do practice ritual scarification if a sort.

Thank you for the lore, Arch!
28:50 i disagree, if GW makes it so that the galaxy only gets darker and darker then eventually people start calling out, ok how much darker can it get before this ends. I personally like things getting better. And just because things are getting better doesnt mean it cant be grim dark, it can be slower, it can be painful, there can slip ups and mistakes. Things can be better and good while also grim dark.
the star dragons
a totally not salamanders successor
maybe they were iron hands who ended up hanging around the salamanders after the istvan incident and adopted many of their ideals practices and traditions and demeanor
or someone at gw is an absolute lazy clown that made these up and just threw a dart at a dartboard of chapters to have them be a successor of
15:44 there’s been cases of dreadnoughts being active for thousands of years. The venerable ancient Rylanor is an example. It’s just very rare. So an active chapter master dreadnaught doesn’t stretch of the imagination too terribly much.
If only the Star Dragons were green instead of blue.... so many missed opportunities for Mario Bros. jokes....
Was listening to you in the background, glanced over at just the right time XD that salamander.
The artwork at 8:05 is amazing, I would love to make a model based entirely and purely off of that

Arch said penitent correctly, good job.
Even if they are related to the Iron Hands, there are successors chapters who are the opposite to the parent character. Just look at the Ultramarines.
Keep doing the Emperor's work, Arch.
Star dragons and blood swords and their remarkable friendship…..
Why am I picturing one chapter all having handle bar moustaches and the other all having personalised leather New York policeman’s hats with chain wrapped around it.
My suspicion is that the Blood Swords are of Angron’s stock

Ahh yes, Friendship is Magic: Warhammer 40k edition
Bjorn was a chapter leader and dread for 6 centuries till he decided to start going to sleep.
The [redacted] slowly emerging in the [redacted]-[redacted] corner was a nice touch
So basically the OG Iron Hands try to go full tech priest wannabe, and these guys try to emulate the Electro-priests. Except only enough to walk around with cool LED lighting and not to the level of being able to shoot lightning and having Xenomorph vision because their eyes have melted out of their sockets...
Just my hot take, I love the fact the warhammer universe is looking bright and cheery especially as a whole new fan base is being formed, as when tyranids, necrons, mthat krork that trazyn has...suddenly enters the picture...gazgul mag uruk thraka....and it ends up being a trick of tzeentch all along....this is my hope
I feel like darkness is currently overpowered in general and not being diminished in any way for a glimmer of hope to shine through. Makes sense, given that GW is now barely even making the slightest effort to conceal the close ties between their lore and their sales...
So you're saying I should field a 5 man assault squad of Blood Swords that are just followed around everywhere by a 10 man tactical squad of Star Dragons and see if anyone gets the joke? 😁
Sweet sweet lore
I really enjoyed this.
As an off question Arch, Is there any instances of exterminatus being deployed against an abandoned ship wreckage? like a hulk (a space hulk if you will) id be very interested to know
Most Space Marines are like me in anthropology class. I'll just be sitting there thinking you know what? I don't actually like people
Star Dragons are just cyberpunk siblings of the Salamders. Vulkan Lives!
Just as a note @Arch, while it's true that there is a very big difference between the Salamders and Blood Angels it is true that they have sworn oaths to each other. Dante has personally lauded Tu'Shan, and the Salamders know about the Red Thirst and Black Rage (or at least their seniors do) and they have kept that secret for them.

My dudes, I think the Blood Swords may have a good chunk of Black Templar genestock.

Christmas came early, lads! Arch pronounced “penitent” correctly for the first time!
First I've heard of either chapter. I'm instantly fans of both.
Bro’s before ho- ..the emperor’
Arch is next Friday going to be the sabbat crusade because that would make for a great early Christmas present
If yall think loyalist Primarchs are a bad thing to bring back, one question:
How does it feel to be WRONG?
Star Dragons can only be Ultramarines or Salamanders successors.
The iron hands that are like salamanders.
100 Billion is an insane number of losses. That's at least a paddling.
I always thought 20 legions being specialised AND deploying as whole legions made no sense.
But taking one company from each legion or whatever is proportionate and putting them in 20 fleets evenly distributed would make more sense AND prevent the heresy by reducing each primarchs influence.
But what do I know just a combat engineer not an immortal Demi-God Warrior king who has seen every mistake in every war since before the first civilisation yet still repeats all of them.
I see Bjorch has finally learned how to pronounce Penitent
Arch I don't know how you missed this but the star dragons have a connection to the Katan, and the dragon of Mars
