Have you ever listened to lofi hiphop when you need to study, focus, or relax? Over the past 3 years, lofi stations like ChilledCow/Lofi Girl have grown a community based on that premise. In this video, Sabrina explores why lofi has become the poster child for study music and if it even works. She also tries to teach a machine to generate lofi music and... it wasn't great.

watching non-musicians attempt to use code to make music is always entertaining because like, without knowing how music theory works, you're not gonna know how to code to account for things like harmonic language, harmonic rhythm, etc.
ai is basically magic. music theory isn't needed, it's just a hard problem for ai to solve.
@@nathanlakeland2953 You can try and bulldoze through whatever you want but if you want something that works well you still need clearly defined and appropriate rules - music theory
@@Saad-pj7ip Thats just not how ai works, maybe if music theory was applied a smarter and better solution could be found, but a sufficiently large neural network with sufficient computation power can solve any problem. The issue is as the problem gets bigger and more complicated a brute force sollution just tends to become too slow. If it was brute forced on a supercomputer for a few months an ai would probably be produced that works quite well. The issue is the ai was simply too small for the simple approach to work, and so a better approach (music theory) or a bigger ai was needed.
@@nathanlakeland2953 You said what I wanted to say but better. I just meant that involving music theory into the magic would make it more efficient instead of not having any rules and figuring it out as you go - bulldozing through the problem.
@Gísiu Wulf only if there was some kind of feedback system for the bot, otherwise it's never going to work. AI learning can brute force its way through things that have a WELL DEFINED win condition. "Music sounds good" is not a well defined condition for success.

One of the reasons lo-fi helps me, is the fact that there is a consistent enough pattern to the instrumentation to be recognized as musical structure, but not repeated in the same way in enough times wherein my brain gets so focused on finishing the musical "pattern" that it diverts attention away from my currently focused task.
My brain will try to automatically predict the next few beats/measures and lo-fi provides just enough pattern recognition for my head to bob, but enough variation in which my brain gives up on an accurate prediction of the upcoming notes.
Lo-fi provides a balance between utter symphonic cacophony and boring repetitive sameness. Allowing my brain to fall into a regular pattern, but varied enough to prevent my brain from filling in every upcoming note.
That actually really summarizes a lot of the research on how music impacts relaxation or focus.
I feel like after this video and your reply helps me to understand why lofi is so popular - I use some specific melodic house mixes to concentrate for very much the same reasons. I can't stand jazzy tunes of any kind (haven't quite figured out why) so I've always really disliked lofi and not understood why anyone listens to it 😅 didn't quite realise how jazzy it actually is.
@@meisjeViv It's definitely not for everyone. Maybe your brain craves the repetition and the comfortable predictability of more traditional melodies to anchor itself, and the wobbly pattern of lofi makes your brain anxious and jumpy, angry in a way that it can't find a firm place to stand. I on the other hand, need some bumps to jolt my brain awake, but not too bumpy or the bumps will be all I think about. I used to listen to white/brown/pink noise before I switched to lofi, lol, but they weren't as effective, still too same-y over time and then my brain simply starts ignoring them. I tried videogame background music, which is also made to be unobtrusive, but it was still too repetitive, and then I would instead daydream about the game in extreme detail, and what I needed was not more daydreaming, but for my brain to shut up and let me work. Lofi hit that sweet spot for me, calling my attention without hogging it. It's a neutral bop. A gentle tap on the shoulder, very polite.
I'm with you on the jazz-is-annoying boat, but for different reasons. It tends to sound very same-y from song to song when everyone's playing everyone else's song, and very brash with all the brass. I actually disliked lofi when I first heard it, but it helped me finish writing my thesis last month, so I can only be thankful :V I'm a believer for life now, lol.

As a neurodivergent teacher, I tend to play this sort of music at a VERY low volume for my students (low enough that students that don’t need the noise can tune it out, high enough that my students that need the noise get the necessary stimuli/vibes) and myself. My students with ADHD, ADD, anxiety and/or depression, etc. have profusely thanked me for it.
I’d love to have you as a teacher keep doing what you do!
that is really so considerate of you. i wish my teachers did something like that for me, especially during tests or exams. the silence really had me itching for some type of satisfying stimulation and not just academically and i would always panic during tests/exams and not just because the problems could be complicated, but because i was very unsettled by the silence. i always need to do something. have some noise when it comes to falling asleep, studying, reading, or painting

I discovered Lofi when I was having a panic attack one day. The simple, slow beats, and lack of lyrics were exactly what I needed.

Lofi Girl looks like she's inspired by Shizuku from Whisper of the Heart(Studio Ghibli), specifically the scene where she's working at her desk. Super cool and informative video on the benefits of using lofi for work/study! Thank you for sharing and growing the lofi community! Much love ❤
lofi has absolutely helped my productivity and it helped me especially while trying to study during the increased stress and anxiety of COVID. my theory is that, as someone who has a crazy strong impulse to procrastinate, having music on in the background while studying feels like i'm satisfying the part of my brain that needs to be distracted while also being productive, and songs with lyrics take up too much concentration, and classical music is too dramatic/emotional/bombastic, so lofi hits that sweet spot of being kinda monotone but also super organic and ambiental.

LoFi is great for lots of moods: like Sad, melancholy, depressed, mournful, lost, lonely, nostalgic, that feeling you get of what could've been, that feeling you get when you're sitting on top of a car in the middle of the night watching the stars all by yourself because you made poor decisions in your youth and now you're watching yourself sink deeper and deeper into the tar pit of a hometown like all the other adults there while your friends grow up and leave you behind.
You know, lots of moods
*Oh my god.*
That hit man
Came here for the vibes and you cut me deep bro!
I have actually really read up on this topic a bunch, and the phenomenon that occurs with with lo-fi music isn't unique to lo-fi music. My going off point with research was actually with classical music and the claims that listening to it can help you study/focus/make you smarter. And in the deep dive of the psychology of music, development, and focus i found out that it isn't a specific quality of the genre of music itself that causes people to focus more while listening to it. It's, as you said in the video, the ability to find the sweet spot between putting you to sleep and grabbing too much of your attention, creating predictable, nonjaring or surprising rhythms for the listener. Like you can repeat the effects of lo-fi music without specifically lo-fi music, if instead you just use songs you already know to death or classical music or whatever else. The trick is basically the concentration bubble/cocoon. If you have absolute silence you will focus a bunch, but the trade off in completely silent environments our bodies are tuned to fixate on disturbances more, so if a room is silent and someone drops their pen, more of your collective attention is going to that pen. However, similar to the phenomenon that you can't hear individual peoples conversations in a murmuring crowd like a mall, if you have just a certain level of ambient noise going on your psychology just kind of tunes it out and that noise acts as kind of a high pass filter for noise and disturbances in your brain allowing you to focus more of your conscious attention at tasks at hand while tuning out what your brain perceives as environmental noise.
Just thought I'd throw what I know for a tldr; of its not specifically lo-fi (or in the case that caught my interest, classical) music, its a general psychological effect with music/noise.
*looks at the full message* “far too much to read” *almost scrolls past* “wait. did they throw a tl;dr?” *checks last paragraph* “they did!!”
Thanks for your insights. ☺ I definitely have heard that classical music can be good for focus. I seem to focus best when I have my fan on for white noise. Silence I would prefer except that yeah, every little noise or distant conversation is more distracting. I'm starting to try lofi and I like it but as you said, the song has to be just right or it doesn't work.
in college i would listen to really rowdy kpop music but because i always used the same playlist i knew what to expect while still feeling energized and motivated by it. thanks for this explanation@
Classical music playlists made for studying are almost all full of startlingly dramatic songs. I can't chill and write citations while Chopin is bleeding his heart out right in front of me.
This music is incredible! I love listening to it all day, not just when I’m learning also to relax, clean, or light one up at night 🍁 this music is just so peaceful, and lofi is a Kleenex term I feel to describe the music in general but everyone should try all the genres out there! What boggles me as a music student is that in theory there's a lot of musical information the code/AI should have to 'know' like harmony and tempo to produce that sort of 'jazzy' instrumental. Also! The reason your tracks might've sounded more 'anxiety inducing' (haha) is that they were lacking the musical production and style of piano playing that makes the lofi beats so soothing and mellow - again due to the AI needing more info. I'd be curious to see how good it'd get at producing such tracks if it somehow took all these things into consideration!
I'm not a music student exactly but I am a multi instrumentalist with some basic music theory/appreciation education and honestly the biggest problem I had with her final product was that the drums sounded like they were just running on like a beats per minute setting instead of using a pattern within time signatures. The moment it got past the first measure my brain went "that's not how rhythm works....".
But you do have a good point about the production and style of lofi, and that AI would have to have a lot of basic music theory input into it in order to make something more akin to man made music
3:19 Btw, the word for this is "defenestrate". Yes. There is a word in the English language for throwing someone out a window. :)
This was my first vocab word in 8th grade best English teacher ever
Best word
Learned it from a csgo youtuber who made a map called de_fenestration or something like that
I love your videos and your humor, you feel like someone I could be besties with!! Thanks for cutting some of the lonely out of my day
keep going girl. That was quite good
I’m writing a book. LoFi girl keeps me focused. This is the best music ever.
Best of luck fellow writer!
I'm doing the same thing 👍
@@adarateranroldan thanks mate! You too!! We got this!
@@visitedmedia7242 it’s so soothing. The best part is I now have favourite tracks 😊
Oh shit me too 🤣
Lofi is a blessing for us people with ADHD since we CANNOT focus when it's just quiet.
FR HOW DO PEOPLE DO IT
I love your videos. I learn a lot through them and it’s a fun learn.
This is my first time here in this CZcams channel, the first video that I watched and.................................... ✨I'm ABSOLUTELY subscribing!! With NO hesitation!✨ You look really cool and I find your humour hilarious. And the message you convey answering in the process, creating a mess and in the end getting something out of it... I really respect this. We need people like you!💖 I can't wait to learn new things and have fun with you! I'll come back around here often.☺️😄
Btw I like how you name the parts of the video. It makes you different and unique + it's fun. At least to me it shows you in a good light.
“Easy, right?”
IT WAS NOT EASY

ah yes, smooth jazz for the nodern age
It just brings you to that perfect mental place for you. And then you find yourself coming back, then you find other types and then you find yours, and its golden. Best finding on CZcams to date.
Yeah, I have adhd so I saw this and looked into lofi. It helps me keep my stress down and help me study and sleep. Thanks for the help!
4:20 me trying to make a good song for my animal crossing town
I was thinking this for myself 😬
Same
Lol true
Beats to be anxious to: the elevator music constantly playing in the back of my mind.
Just finished my final exams and every time I felt like I couldn’t study any longer, I searched ‘ambience’ on CZcams and listened to rain sounds in the background. I don’t know if there was anything scientific about it but every time, I was able to go on and keep studying for several more hours or as long as it was playing. I also felt a lot calmer.
This was really cool. With layered drums, it really turned out well, and with apps like splice, you could make a 24/7 stream pretty easily, so long as your code receives it’s prompts from preassembled drum loops. Thank you for the brain tickle!
“Silence is the best for focusing.”

Edit: Guys plz stop I've been diagnosed
Shera~! :D
Same. LoFi helps me focus a lot though
@@thijs2906 And you felt the need to say this because?
@@thijs2906 Yes but this commenter didn’t mention if they’re diagnosed or not so you didn’t need to go on a rampage about undiagnosis, go comment under someone undiagnosed
@@thijs2906 And? I didn't ask. Plus it's diagnossed so...
“I’m waiting for the drop “
“There is no drop” 😂😂
The beat and bass boost that you can feel, along with some repetitive mellow chords, it’s the perfect recipe for lofi. Really makes me feel I could work for hours and somehow I never get tired of working. Like magic music
An amazing video great editing and awesome content keep it up👍
Thanks for the impressive research! This actually helps me improve my study music 🙏🙏
No ratio for you lmao
Which type of Lofi would you study to?
@@dope5684 probably jazz-sample based lofi, or nujabes style

I just discovered your channel. Pure gold. Cheers from a new subscriber in México 🇲🇽
Lofi has helped both me and my students hit flow! The science that goes into it is amazing.
Ominous beats to be anxious/panic to
3:05 "putting 2 & 2 together". No? Aight,Imma head out🚶
ur brain? big 🧠🧠🧠
Uu, that would've been a nice one :D
I started listening to the stream well after it had been getting recommended to me by CZcams. Once I got back into reading, I decided it would be nice to have it in the background. It helped me blow right through the book, and now I listen to it while I write my own stories. 😄
8:07 Also, you're bud here reminds me so much of Jammidodger.
I love you. I can’t believe I just found your channel! Where have you been all my life?
My thoughts are this: I feel lofi helps me focus because it adds a non distractive way of occupying my brain when it wants to do something else. I can easily get caught up in something like a terraria playthrough, and then if I go from playing to studying, I will often find my mind drifting, but some kind of music can help me get into the flow state and focus on my work better.
"So as long as there's any sound, I'm gonna be happy."
*Plays one sound endlessly*
"I'm not happy."
There truly is no greater lie than the lies we tell ourselves.
that's why I play different..check here out
Nice. :-D
As a person with ADHD it’s impossible to do anything on its own unless accidentally engaging hyperfocus or huge amounts of effort. At uni the only successful studying I got done was with the low-fi study girl open and playing. Probably would have done better if I’d been on stimulants but lo-fi definitely helped 😂
