My husband and I are decluttering our basement right now. We are "seniors" so we work a little each day. This is working well for us. We don't get overly tired or overwhelmed! Everything that is not trash is being donated. This process is taking a lot off our minds. We don't want our kids to have to deal with all of this when we are gone.

Thanks for the tips. Here’s my summary.
    1. Declutter/purge only your stuff - let other folks declutter their own stuff.
    2. Declutter/purge when you are in the right ‘state of mind’.
    3. Declutter/purge a little daily, weekly, or monthly so you have enough steam/momentum.
    4. Focus on benefits of decluttered space and positive aspects of purging stuff.
    5. Keep your process simple for decluttering.
    6. Focus only on decluttering. The time to organize/get storage containers is when you’re done.
    7. Make decisions on your own about which items you purge/keep.
    8. Ignore potential for regret about decluttered/purged items. Ignore future cost of re-purchasing.
    9. For possible sale items, calculate potential income. Is it worth your time/effort to sell them?
    10. Move purged items out of home immediately - or ASAP.

For a long time I held on to about 1,000 assorted items that I was not using. My justification was, "what if I need this item some time in the future? I'd have to buy it again!" Eventually I let the items go, having the new mindset that, if I have to re-buy one or two items over the next few years, so what? I'm gaining SO much more, in space and in mental clarity, by getting rid of so many things.

I am having a hard time getting rid of a few things I recieved as wedding gifts. When I got married I asked for *everything* I could think of and I didn't really know what I would really use. I had a lot of grand ambitions I think. Now I have a better idea of what I actually use but I still am not really sure if I want to let go of that stuff I was so *sure* I would need as a new wife 🤔.

Teach your kids to declutter -- show them how you decluttered something and how nice it looks and how nice it makes you feel, and then tell them that there are poor kids who could use their excess toys and then help them to declutter in small steps, such as books one day, board games another, video games another, clothes another, puzzles another, etc. My kids are grown and the main things they have kept are their Lego sets and childhood books. And a few small doodads they kept by their bedsides. Teach them to destress and relax too. Turn off the electronics for part of the day and get them involved in hobbies and skill acquisition. A musical instrument, learning to cook or sew, how to set up a tent, carving, wood burning, cross country skiing -- anything that strikes their fancy. Scouting used to teach a lot of that and I think kids miss out on SO much -- nature lore, taking wildlife photos, making collections of stamps, seashells, rocks, leaves, etc.

Made all the mistakes of decluttering. Only yesterday I got rid of an old trike. My kids used yo use it and so did my grandkids. They are too big for that now so bye bye. Boy did I get into trouble with hubby. He wanted to keep it and so did my 30 year old son.
BIG no no........to chuck something that's not realy mine.😱😳🤪
Lesson learned and I do realy feel bad and I did apologize .
At the moment I only have one area decluttered and the rest is all over the place because I....... yep took everything out everywhere.

One fundamental change I made when deciding if an item stays or goes is - when I'm unsure, to break thru the indecision I put it in the 'outgoing' pile and see how it feels. That act always gives me the extra clarity I need. (And 9 times out of 10, it stays in the outgoing pile.)

I am making this me time, so its focused on how I feel about my life, and I can get theraputic insight while clearing out clutter. I modeled, so clothing that is designer or high end fabrics have all this value, in my mind but I don't wear that stuff because its either dry clean only and needs it, or too stiff or scratchy, or I feel over dressed. Instead, I wear what makes me comfy, stretchy fabrics that breathe, colors that give me a mood lift and lots of black too.
I am getting courage from your video, its so nice to have help in areas I am under practiced in, like organizing and reducing material things. I have thought of it so negatively, but right now, its not over whelming, its something I will feel good when I am doing it, and after with my aesthetically cleaned out home, and wardrobe that I can keep organized and not tossed all over my room!
I have had the pack rat mentality and couldn't figure out how to change it. It isn't at all hard like I was thinking. Small steps, and eventually, worth doing, for multiple reasons. Have company over, be peaceful and relaxed, find things when I need them, not worry about the junk stuffed in boxes and closets. Reasons are many. Especially raise my self worth! Thanks!

I like the part of the Kon Mari method when you thank your possession for being apart of your life before letting it go. I do this when I feel like I might miss an item even though I know it's no longer serving a purpose in my life. My 5 year old laughs at me for thanking objects but it works for me haha!

I agree with you about to not declutter someone else's stuffs. Decluttering without their consent will only hurt them, especially when you (unknowingly) throw away their precious belongings.
My mom used to declutter my things without my consent so often that I lost count. One day she thrown away my wall posters and my childhood's loose leafs collection, not knowing that I cherish them so much. I got so mad at her for that and my anger hurt both of us.

Your tip to not declutter several areas at the same time is great 👍 that only creates a mess. Just doing one small area at a time does work, even though that's slow and time-consuming. Having afew boxes in one area also works, one box for keep and another for don't keep. Then to group similar items together within that 'keep' box into separate 'homes'. Once the 'homes' for similar items are set up, it's easier to start clearing another area. Eventually each separate 'home' can be organised later as, like you say, that's a different task. I was fed up not finding what I needed, to then have to buy another one, only to find several of those same items later 🙄. Now there's a 'home' for those grouped similar items, to go straight to. Thank you for your videos and help 👍

I am just beginning to pare down my belongings. I like what you said about not doing it all at the same time. One room at a time - or closet - or drawer - or shelf. And, I haven't decided to streamline every area. I will likely indulge myself in a hobby just so that I don't feel deprived.... until I can fully appreciate the liberation in the other areas of my life. One reason I want to do this - is so things are neater and more organized. Another reason is that our children have grown up and have their own places - and I would like to down size to a smaller home in the future. Also, I don't want my children to have to deal with my stuff when I die...want the process to be as pain-free as possible for them. My father was a minimalist (in the 1980s) and it was easy to tie up the loose-ends. My mother was a hoarder (and had accumulated a lot of stuff when she had a lot of money) - it took years to deal with her mess 30 years later. I would never want to put my children in such a difficult situation.

We recently had to empty a bedroom to replace flooring. I found by accident, it is so much easier to declutter the way Marie Kondo suggests. When "stuff" is just placed around, it is hard to see them as clutter. But once we had everything piled in another room to clear out the first room, I saw plenty that I was hanging onto and did not really need. It feels so good to now have much less in the room after redoing our floors. Onto to the next room.....

Rewarding yourself for losing weight or whatever is exactly the kind of consumerist BS trend that leads to perpetual decluttering sessions followed by more shopping. Haha, I just decluttered 4 items in my bedroom by moving around 4 other items I had in my living room sideboard and elsewhere in my bedroom (in a non permanent spot). Got rid of two decorative vases, a candle holder and a big teddy bear. Replaced it with a bamboo box filled with my candles and now have a permanent home for my two really sentimental cuddly toys. Also, for the first time ever I now have an empty shelve in my living room sideboard (and nothing left to put on it).
I'll keep moving things around, until it all falls into place. Works out great for me actually 😊 Proves the first (?) point you made, what works for someone else doesn't have to work for you. Got rid of over 60% of my possessions by basically moving stuff around. All part of actually finding out what works, what doesn't and where you have room or where it is practical to store/ save your items.
Sometimes it's a learning process to find permanent homes for something and you'll have to shuffle things around. Nothing wrong with that. Just don't keep moving stuff from the bedroom floor to the hallway, to the garage, to the basement, to the living room and back to the bedroom floor... That's just tiring and causes demotivation. But do move things around when you're actually trying to find a permanent home for it. It's important to have a vision of how you want your space to look and what you want to store on each shelve or behind each door, some people are more visual and NEED to move stuff around to know if it works or not 💪🏻👍🏻

If one of the things you choose to get rid of is something that one of your family members or friends would enjoy and you have seen them admire it, give it to them. Nothing is more satisfying to your heart than seeing the joy on their face when they get a gift they really didn’t expect. Good karma! 3. Really be honest with yourself, if you hadn’t done anything with an item or not worn it in 6 months ( excluding seasonal wear) get rid of it!
