I remember watching this in London in 1953 and marvelled at just how good the Hungarian team was. It was the first time a foreign team had beaten England at Wembley and was a big lesson to the English on just how much they had to learn if they were going to compete against European teams in the future. The Magyars should have won the World Cup in 1954, but they were beaten by West Germany. Puskas was injured and sidelined at the time.

Annoyingly long wait while the makers informed us at length how brilliant they are. After that (finally) ended, however, it was a great sight and a good game. Not easy to get much of a tactical grip from just watching the goals, but Hungary looked superb. The England sid didn't lie down and die either. Worth restoring.

Oui et les anglais ont voulu prendre leur revanche à Budapest... résultat (7 - 1)
Cette équipe était merveilleuse largement au niveau du Brésil 1970, même si difficile de comparer les époques (Entraînement Equipement Ballon)
Elle méritait largement la Coupe du Monde 1954 en Suisse. N'oublions pas qu'ils avaient étrillés les allemands en préliminaire (8 - 3),
et surtout "laisser des plumes" en éliminant les grosses écuries (Brésil 4 - 2 Uruguay 4 - 2). Plus cool pour les allemands (Yougoslavie 2- 0 et Autriche 6 - 1)
Aucun commentaire sur la finale, et la suspicion qui demeure sur d'éventuelles transfusions de sang chez les allemands.
Bref, j'avais 10 ans mais total scotché devant les rares télévisions de l'époque.

On ne peut pas comparer les époques mais vraiment cette équipe a révolutionné le football moderne.

@@worldcupvintagecolorized4045 Trop jeune pour comprendre, en revanche j'ai dans mes archives (enfin dans un carton à la cave... ??) mon premier "But et Club" (hebdomadaire sportif de l'époque en image sépia), offert par ma maman parce que j'étais malade et donc pas à l'école... Il existait aussi, je crois, le "Miroir des sports". Effectivement la Hongrie méritait largement le titre, son parcours (très difficile), ses individualités, étaient largement supérieures aux autres. Puskas, Kosics, Hidegkuti, Czibor notamment, ont fait le bonheur de certains clubs espagnols après les "événements" de 1956. Dommage pour la Hongrie, mais ça nous a peut-être permis de terminer en bronze en 1956.... Sauf que, sans la blessure de Jonquet, le Brésil n'était peut-être pas en finale et là tout était possible... Souvenons-nous comment l' équipe d'Allemagne a explosé devant Kopa Fontaine Piantoni et Cie... D'ailleurs les suédois n'ont pas fait mieux devant les brésiliens.. à onze...!!. Bon on ne fera pas l'histoire, pas même en 1982.....

Wonderful to see this in colour and definition, but why speed it up? Also, the best part of Hungary's 7th goal is Puskas's control and lob to Hidegkuti which is cut out. Good work anyway

The political upheaval to follow in Hungary didn't help the team in any way, most of them defected, a pity that they never won the World Cup, but had their chance against West Germany after putting eight goals past them in the group stage in 1954

because they were robbed, the referee favoured the germans who are suspicious of being drugged... besides, they purposely injured Puskas in the group stage... it's one of the most appalling games in football history

This match has legendary status and yet these days it would be dismissed as being "only" a friendly.
Hungary were a fabulous team and should have won the World Cup. However, since then they have never reached those heights again and English football after this tremendous shake up went on to win the World Cup in 1966. Football was dramatically changed by the Hungarians and since the tactics have many faces now unlike then in England when a number five always marked a number nine.

Maybe was a friendly but England was unbeatean for 90 years at home back then, so they will remember it.
