The look of the real ocean is one of the elements that made this a great movie. The story of how the movie was made reveals that making a movie in the real ocean just wasn't done, and they had a lot of trouble doing it. But they did it, and the movie NEVER GETS OLD.

The film tells the story of a white shark terrorizing a small town of Amity, and that three men have to go out to hunt it. It one of the best movies to come out worldwide, back then, their was not a movie that was like this. All starting as a novel became a classic film that will never, ever, in a million years, get old.

Robert Shaw as Quint...possibly the greatest castng decision for any movie ever made. Certainly one of the greatest performances of all time. He nailed it like very few others have ever nailed a role.Anyone who read the novel knows now that no other actor would have come close.

I read years ago that Sterling Hayden wanted that role desperately. He and his agent lobbied the producers and Spielberg, all of who were non committal, saying that they had a few more actors lined up to read for the part. Hayden then contacted Peter Benchley and gave him a big spiel about how important it was to have exactly the right actor because the character of Quint , although not the lead, was the pivotal role and would make or break the movie. He even read dialogue from the book to Benchley over the phone to prove he was the man to play Quint. Reportedly Benchley listened politely and patiently, and finally complimenting Hayden effort by saying " Amazing! if I hadnt written him, I'd swear i was listening to a real shark fisherman named Quint! But although I did write it, it's not my book anymore. Have you tried speaking with the producers? "
      Hah! Lol
I gotta believe that as soon as Shaw read for the role it was his.

One thing about Jaws, what we saw on movie screen, actually was filmed. There was no CGI. And the music, when you heard Jaws theme in background, that's when your glued to the screen or looking away. Jaws will always be top horror film along with exorcist.

This movie got me into studying sharks, I wasn't even 10 years old when it came out, saw it in 81 and it hooked me, at the beginning, I was afraid of the water. But later in life, as I learned about these creatures, and their behavior, my fear of the water was replaced with respect. Remember, when we go into the water, we are entering their world, a world that is much bigger than us and we asume responsibility and know the risk involved. IMO, the greatest film ever produced.

I remember my brothers and sisters, who were babysitting me at the time, I was four, almost five in the summer of 1975 ... they sat me down in the theatre, and I was scared out of my wits ... I went home, I was due a bath ... I was afraid to take a bath, finally my mother said, "If Jaws can make it through that drainpipe, I let him eat you!" ... it impacted my life really, I'm almost 48, and I still cannot go in the ocean past my ankles. Bar none, it was and always will be my favorite movie of all time. I don't care if the shark, today, doesn't look real ... it did when I was four, and still to this day.

Wow. You were allowed to go to the movies and watch this movie when you were 4 years old? Was that in America? At that time we already had a "non-under sixteen" law in Germany for such films. Not even if an adult was there.

Anna-Clara Cloudlet .... My friend and I went and saw Jaws at age 10. My mom dropped us off at the theater and picked us up when it was over. We have freedom in America. I was hunting alone in the woods at age 8 with a real gun and fishing alone in my own boat. Kids weren't wimps here in the 1970s. Unfortunately they are now. I was raised on a farm where we had to work to grow food and helped kill and process chickens, turkeys, pigs, cows and the crops we grew. Kids in America today are spoiled and soft....

Two thoughts: that real life story of the shark getting trapped in the cage was intense...Quint’s powerful speech about the USD Indianapolis is one of the best monologues ever recorded for film-I recall listening to a survivor of the Indianapolis and his story was harrowing too.

  • @jkorshak
    @jkorshak Před 5 lety +4

In 1973 or 74, when I was 10 or 11, my parents rented a beach house for a holiday weekend and there was a Readers Digest bound book of "Jaws." It had these great illustrations of the shark going up on the back of Orca and Hooper getting grabbed as the shark slammed through the cage. On the 2nd or 3rd day the weather was lousy so I read the book, and I enjoyed reading it but Chapter II, which had more to do with Brody's marital troubles, I didn't think much of that. I remember after I finished the book going to the water and not being scared since it was a beach far away from where the book takes place - but I knew there were sharks. I just told myself the really big sharks were rare and they'd never come to this beach, and they'd leave me alone - but I didn't go out more than chest deep. Another time, a couple years after I saw Jaws, I was body surfing and a wave pitched me down into the sand bar and I busted my lip, and I got really scared because of the blood I was bleeding into the water - I remember crossing the hundred yards from the first sandbar back to the shore being very nervous and looking around. For the movie itself, I thought it was great - better than the book - even then I had heard of the Indianapolis and was into history, so that scene impressed the hell out of me. It's a great movie - for me it's the acting - Scheider, Dreyfuss, and Shaw particularly, are all excellent.

That scene when Quint's speaking to the people at the town meeting is one of my favourite scenes in the film. Amazing the way he sells the idea to the people at the meeting that the shark is a serious menace and the problem it could cause to beach goers and businesses alike. It makes you as speechless as the characters themselves! Such a great actor!
I love it when Mayor Vaughan nervously replies: "Thank you very much Mr Quint, we'll take it under advisement!"

I can't recall how many times I've seen this film. I still never tire of it. The acting, the humor, the effects and the music, it was lightning in a bottle. My first viewing of it was in a theater when I was 12 years old. It left an indelible impression that lasts to this day. I compare every movie I see to it, and most of them fall very short. Even today I quote certain lines from it and they're just as relevant as they were over 40 years ago. My thanks to the cast and crew and everyone connected with the production of this masterpiece, you've given me one of my guilty pleasures in life and I'll be indebted to you all for the rest of my days. To those that we have lost, my condolences to all the family, friends and fans that you helped to entertain for so many years. I hope I'm still around to see the 50th anniversary, I'll be sure to throw a Jaws themed party for all of my fellow addicts. I leave you with a classic snippet of dialogue, CAN WE GO HOME NOW?!

One thing I've always thought regarding the theme, or at least the basis of the theme (the dun dun dun dun portion) as it speeds up and as the shark gets closer to its target, I've thought of it as the movement of the shark. Like, ok, so sharks move their tails side to side, and their body the opposite. So each 'dun' is the movement of the shark. Left, right, left, right, left right left right left right leftrightleftrightleftright STRIKE!

This will be a fun action movie, but it will never come close to anything near as amazing as Jaws. What they should have done is gone the route of well written well acted amazing movie that happen to have a shark in it like Jaws. But instead they went straight for popcorn Blockbuster action movie with tons of corny jokes. Don't get me wrong I can't wait to see it and I'm sure I will love it but there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that it's going to measure up to Jaws and you can tell that just by watching the trailers

I only saw this movie after i had left the navy (and the coast area) where i was based. Thank heavens, had i seen it before i would have stayed out of the water and not gone swimming over weekends. Since i saw this movie i decided that it is safer for me to stay on dry land and let Jaws and her kind live in the sea. It is quite a good relationship, i do not go into the sharks home, and they do not bite me.

So, where, " You can't be too careful!" is an old adage, if you want to swim, you swim. Look around, choose a 'sensible' place to swim, like, not where there are seals. ( and stay focused ).

I wonder how the real Great White sharks in the area viewed the animatronic shark. I never knew but recent shark tagging reveals a large amount of white shark traffic near Cape Cod and the Long Island sound. The crew probably thought what everyone else did at the time and didn’t even worry about sharks especial in the Cape or Martha’s Vineyard. The largest white shark recorded caught is only a few miles away off New Jersey. How freaky is that .

@John Cornell Just looking through the Global Shark Attack File, and out of 6374 reported attack by sharks since 1845, 56 attacks have been reported by bull sharks, and 167 have been reported by whites. This would seem to suggest you are right, however, there are also 2869 attacks that have no id on the shark. Also, an interesting figure to note, is that 17.89% of bull shark attacks have been fatal compared with 15.57% of white shark attacks; That would seem to suggest that while there have been more attacks by white sharks, bulls are the more deadly.....

lol, i hear ya. seen some big sharks at local beaches where i swam and surfed (Body board) , and ive been in very small boats for fishing and seen a white rounder than the aluminium boat i was sitting in as it swam under the boat and tasted various parts of the boat such as the prop. that feeling you described while surfing and having a white shark cruise on your wave, or anywhere for that matter, is a feeling i cant put into words for describing that fear. the rush you get as your eyes in that split second recognizing that shape, the instant cold adrenaline rush from a shark, has never been felt by me from any other danger ive faced. long story short, i know how you felt. :) and no other fear compares.
