  • Today we're going over my 2023 anti reading resolutions! I've always been bad at sticking to the goals I set out for myself each year and I'm hoping this take on resolutions will help me out. Let me know what some of your reading resolutions are. I hope you all had a solid holiday season!

    im a mood reader and fully embracing it is actually so productive and fulfilling. working with your mood instead of against it will actually change your life lol. also im a firm believer that the books that mean the most to you find you at exactly the right time, so putting off reading something for a long time shouldn't be a bad thing, bc i think you'll finally read it when it's the right time

      i am a mood reader too :D never plan for more than the next book, but off course there are sometimes where a favorite author will release a new book then i drop everything to read that book :) but yeah being a mood reader and not doing a monthly tbr where you know exactly what you will read that month is awesome

      I also believe this--when I put off a book for a long time and then it turns out to be amazing and wonderful, I just know I was meant to read it then :)

      Yep! This is why I love being a mood reader. I feel like I have a psychic connection to my shelves lol, the book I need at that point in time jumps out to me and is perfect. The only downside to being a mood reader IMO is getting library holds in after months of waiting and not being in the mood for them at the moment lol.

      I totally get this, I often love to plan things as much if not more than actually doing them, it's such a weird thing, but I'm glad I'm not the only one. I do it with all sorts of things. You would not believe how many Pokemon teams I have put together and planned out, down to movesets and abilities and natures and evs and everything, only to never use them for anything at all lol. I've planned interior design and gardens and yes book lists that never go anywhere more times than I can count.

    My anti-resolution for this year is to not feel guilty about re-reading my favourite books. I always tend to feel guilty about reading a book i already read and all the while thinking about the amount of new books I could've gotten off my TBR pile. I know. Sad.
    But this year, I don't care about what anyone says. If I only read books I've already read all year, I still wouldn't let myself feel guilty... Haha...
    Thanks for this Jesse. This video was all the motivation I needed😬💜

    I'm doing the no goal anti-resolution too because I found that whilst I wasn't stressed about it I felt a few months I was attempting to speed read books to make the count go up! (Instead I set my GR goal to 1 so i can still SEE the number but not get obsessed).
    I'm absolutely a mood reader too, just reading what I fancy when I fancy it🤷🏻‍♀️ I can't do TBR piles at all, I love those who can but i'll just read whatever I want when I want to and not get trapped by choices former me made, when i now don't wanna read them....
    I need to use my phone less too😭 thanks insta. Maybe set alarms when you open your phone? So when the alarm goes off you go back to reading.
    I love these!

    Very recently in my adult life I have become a SUPER mood reader. Before I could totally make TBR and plan out what I was going to read, but now I have to be so flexible and willing to just go with what sounds good in the moment. It’s hard at times but has really made me love reading more!

    Big book hack: break it into small reading sections, which is different for every reader. Maybe every 25 or 50 pages put a bookmark, then read one section a day. Lemme tell you, it is so satisfying to watch the main bookmark make its way further into the book. Also a great use of your extra bookmarks!

    I love this! I guess I've always had anti-resolutions without realizing it! Here's my regular "anti" practices:
    -I am also a mood reader, and I don't buy books that I'm not in the mood to read either right away or very soon. This keeps purchasing to a minimum.
    -I keep my yearly reading challenge very attainable so that I have the option to read longer books without feeling stressed out, and then I extend it slightly as I reach goals over the course of the year.
    -I keep social media OFF OF MY PHONE ENTIRELY. I still use social media, but I literally download it when I want to post or check in on my friends and then delete it again. This has been so helpful in keeping me from mindlessly scrolling!
    Love your anti-resolutions, thanks for the fun video!

    Sometimes, I'll have an audiobook or ebook on hold on Libby, and then when it's finally my turn for it, I've lost all interest in it. So this year, I'm trying to be better about not feeling guilty about returning books I've lost interest in and/or DNFing them. I'm also trying to be better about the quantity of books I request either on Libby or through my library at a time, because I feel like requesting books and then actually reading those books are two very different hobbies, and then I always end up with more books than I have time to realistically read.

    My reading has dropped off massively over the past couple of years due to some IRL traumatic shit. And I STILL feel bad for not reading as much as I wanted to. But i've done SO SO much work on myself, healing, self love in place of that reading time, which is absolutely worth it. I think reading is just a hobby that we, as readers are super passionate about. And if we're not putting 100% effort into it at all times, it's like we're disgracing ourselves as 'real readers'. But we are real readers. Great message, Jesse. Been a while since i've been here, but lovely to see you still going strong on CZcams

    After watching this for the second time because I relate so much as a mood reader to this, I have more thoughts. I love the idea of easing into the mood reader and letting go of these expectations to read a certain amount etc. Something I am trying to do is embrace what I love to read instead of comparing what I am reading with what others are reading or what is popular, as you say reading what my heart desires!

  • @sonderture
    @sonderture Před rokem +1

    Caught that moment when you sang anti-fragile in the end 😂
    That part about not comparing oneself to another's reading progress is so important! I'm a really slow reader and because of work, I can't spend a bulk of my time on reading (I wish though). It used to bum me out but I've learned to appreciate whatever time I get with my books. I set aside 15 minutes before work and 10 minutes before sleep to read everyday, any other time I get to read in-between I count it as a blessing. This method has been making me happy or at least keeping me sane on stressful days.
    Every reader has their own reading habits that suit their lifestyles and priorities. Life is stressful enough, we really shouldn't stress ourself out even more on something that is supposed to relax us.

  • @Amyduckie
    @Amyduckie Před rokem +1

    Yes! Embrace that mood reading life. If I want to do a monthly “TBR” I set a “pile of possibilities” after I saw Kazen at Always Doing doing that because she’s a mood reader. She’s like “these interest me right now, but no promises.” Which is fun, and doesn’t bog you down like a TBR does. And I get a bucketload read most months. Just go where your heart wants you to go, it’s fun. ❤
    I also set a small goal on Goodreads every year because I want to participate, but I set it low enough I can usually hit it mid year.

    I just joined goodreads and started watching Booktube videos. I live all the way in 3rd world southern Africa, so books are not easy to obtain in particularly underdeveloped countries. I felt a bit pressured by the reading environment online and sometimes a bit sad that by the time I'm getting to newer titles, everyone will have moved on. I tried to read more than one book at a time, pressured myself to have a lot of friends online, and I've achieved none of those things.
    I can really only read one book at a time. I'm just going to enjoy them as I did before I met the internet: at my own pace. And I'd much rather have a handful of great friends than a list of people I don't even know. Not to say that seeing so many people so motivated and enthusiastic about reading is bad for me. I always feel a sense of community with other readers 🩷 I'm just happy that I don't have to change myself because of it. My goodreads challenge goal is 100% fake🤣 Although I did put some thought into it. Just to hype myself for this reading year.
    I think it's really cool that you made an anti-resolution video 🙂

  • @sdg3639
    @sdg3639 Před rokem +4

    I used to have a goal to read a book a week, and because most books are around 300 pages, I figured I needed to read at least 50 pages a day. That quickly overwhelmed me and made reading less fun, and if I skipped a day or two , I would think “ oh no, I’m 100 pages behind”. I also avoided larger books and series because I knew they would be near impossible to finish in a week/ couple of weeks. I was making reading a chore, rather than the enriching, joyous hobby it once was.
    Now I just have a set reading time, everyday. It’s not about how much time I read or how many pages. Just that I’m reading a little everyday, even if it’s just a couple of pages or 1 chapter. It’s been freeing and I’m enjoying my reading much more ( although I still have a number set on my goodreads challenge because I can’t stand it looking empty….but it’s alot smaller now 😅). Thanks for the thoughtful video, I related a lot to your struggles.

    7:00 this!! Social media is so mind-numbing, but so difficult to get out of once you start scrolling! I tend to go on tiktok because there are some types of videos I do like to see there and that inspire me, but then I end up scrolling on my fyp for hours on end, and that never bodes well for my energy levels. Therefore, same anti-resolution here!
    As for the reading amount, I like to set it below the amount I know I'll read so I get that sense of accomplishment :D

    The number on Goodreads always catches me hyper-aware as well. So in 2022, I just didn't put anything in and only checked how many books I'd read at the end of the year. Not knowing the exact number of books I'd read helped me relax and be chill about reading, instead of constantly having this thought in the back of my head that I needed to read more. It did me so good, I'm gonna not put anything in the challege box this year either.

    Hi Jessie! I really enjoy your channel and your hectic humour. I hope you have a happy New Year!
    About your goals, I feel you on struggling to prioritize reading over literally anything else. I was in à reading slump for 2 years, never finishing à book, and only last year did I start getting back into my biggest passion little by little. Priotizong reading is a processs. But what I try to tell myself is 'What makes me happy? What brings me the most joy?' I feel like thinking in those terms is helpful: guilt-free and focuses on what is truly meaningful to me. And sometimes, after studying for my finals as I am currently doing, a long day at work or literally anything else, it's ok not to be in the mood to read. Sometimes we need something else.
    So Happy New Year and thank you for what you do!

    My goal for this year is to not continue to buy more books than I read (like, just buy one book, read that book, and then you can buy another, don’t buy five books at once, you’re only going to read three of them), to buy and read books I’m actually 100% excited for and just have a good time. I’ve found that it helps immensely to just set low expectations, like, I read 33 books last year so my goal for this year is to read thirty books.

    One anti reading resolution I should make (but never do) is not to attempt so many reading challenges. There's such un-needed stress for me to finish them, when I realize it's such an arbitrary goal. My only positive take away is that they force me to branch out of my comfort zone, which is good. Otherwise I would never have read Ready Player One (phenomenal!) or (The House in the Cerulean Sea (also phenomenal!) last year.

    No real resolutions ,but I read a bunch of short and finished series in 2022 so I feel like reading something long with a bunch of book for some reason, so I picked up a series called Monster Hunter International and it is exactly what I was in the mood for. 📚📚

    I stopped reading/watching negative reviews of books until after I read them (if I’m interested in reading them) and it has allowed me to give the book a much more fair assessment based on my own opinions. Then I look at some negative reviews after and agree/disagree without it impacting my reading experience. Much more enjoyable than going into with an ick!

    last year my resolution was to get through as many first books of popular series as I could and I got though quite a few (the good the bad and the eh) but in hindsight when I found a rREALLy good one all I wanted was to read the next book but I would force myself to pick another series and it all culminated into reading block at the end of the year and I read LESS books than the previous year so basically I found THE WORST possible thing I could have done for myself a a reader
    So this year I am picking back all those series that I liked and going as far as I like them. I already bought 3 Johannes Cabal books and Crooked Kingdom. I am excited.

    I buy books for the seasons and then wait for that season to read the book. I bought a retelling of the Nutcracker at the end of 2021 and finally read it this past December. Mood or Seasonal reader here 😂

    I set a Goodreads goals, but I don't feel bad about resetting it in late December to reflect my actual reading speed for the year.
    I also make a list of books I'm absolutely, finally going to get around to THIS year. Then look at it in late December and realize I didn't read any of them, again. (I'm almost at the ten year anniversary for finishing the last two books in one series.)
    I think there are apps you can use to shut down other apps for set periods of time. I've never looked into them, but it might help with spending less time on SM.

  • @lavendermarshmallowplant3229

    My resolution is simple, to just finish all the books I already have and am already reading. That doesn't seem like much, but I've had those books for over a year or so, so it'll definitely an achievement for me.
    I guess one anti-resolution I'll have is...to not stall in reading a book when I'm attached to the story. I know that seems contradictory, but when I become invested in a story, I'll always stall in completing because 1. I feel as though I'm not in the right mind space to enjoy the story 'as it deserves' or 2. I'm enjoying it so much I don't want to be done with it lmao
    In general I want to get over my book slump that I've had for the past year. I'm an artist too and I've similarly had an art slump for much of the same time. Honestly, having a book AND an art slump at the same time is so depressing, being lazy has never been this mentally draining. So, I want to get over that and then I want to find a balance between reading a book for hours and creating art for hours, and whatever I do in-between that isn't academically/family/friend-related I'll try to lessen. Which also includes social media lol.

      @VictorianGentleman Před rokem

      I totally get you, I do that stalling thing too, that's exactly what it's like! I'm chronically unable to finish anything, tv shows, books, video games, etc, because I'm not ready for it to be over or the mood isn't just perfect to fully appreciate it or something. It can be kind of frustrating because I now have dozens of in progress media that I can't seem to resolve and it's just a mess.

    Kinda weird way I managed to reduce the time I spent on my phone was to keep moving the app icons around. Then you won't develop muscle memory to open the app "accidentally" and it gives you time to think whether going on the app is something you actually want to do while you look for it.
    Didn't work with Reddit though, that I just had to delete and decide I'll only check it when on the computer.
