Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was extremely underrated and was buried behind Bergkamp, Kluivert, and Ruud van Nistelroy for national team.
They also had Van Hooijdonk and Roy Makaay around the same time. Holland had an unbelievable squad during that period.
he actually wasnt underrated, a lot of people rated him very highly but as you mentioned he was just behind better players, no shame in that

Chelsea fan here and I love Jimmy! I’m 33 and him Drogba, Zola and Diego Costa are my favourite strikers for the club. Weird how so many strikers just don’t hit the ground running at the bridge. Ps the man has not aged at all.
Hasselbaink was one of the best strikers in Europe in his prime. He just never played for a really really top European club but if he did we'd all be talking about him differently. You look at his record from his time at Leads through to Atletico Madrid right up until Abramovich bought Cheslea and he's was just a model of consistency. He had a great year every year.

You really don't get players like Eidur anymore. Gudjohnsen was like one of those 'baller' players that we don't get as everything has become more system based, which is probably why he dropped into midfielder in the second half of his career. But he was the perfect striker for a 4-4-2.

Jimmy is one of those players that most fans definitely appreciated when he played for you but now he’s retired etc you really open your eyes and appreciate him even more. He was a special special player, as a Middlesbrough fan I was growing up just as he was ending at Boro and he gave me some fantastic memories, the things I’d of done to see him lift that European trophy with us 😢
His freekick against City in the game that qualified you for the 05/06 Uefa cup campaign. Phenomenal. Also I was at the Basel home gain (my dad is a Boro fan). I remember telling him at 2-1 with 15 minutes to go, if you get a goal in the next 5 minutes you'll go through. And then Hasselbaink out of nowhere just put in the top corner with so much power and seemed like no backlift. I'm a Chelsea fan and started going to games when Hasselbaink was our main man; he's definitely an extremely underrated striker in Prem History. He averaged just under 1 in 2 for 8 seasons in the Prem (I'm not including his Charlton stats).
He was amazing! As a Dutch player he was a bit underrated because of the other genuises in the national team but I loved following him at his clubs, just such a great striker. Bedankt voor alles man. En je wordt een toptrainer!

Blessed to have watched Jimmy playing for my team, Cardiff. Many happy memories. Class is permanent and a top bloke too.
Was gutted when Jimmy went, he was absolutely lethal for Leeds in those 2 years. We got a bit lucky as we took the Jimmy money and took a gamble on Michael Bridges who took up Jimmy's baton and fired us to Champions League qualification. I do always wonder though if Leeds could have gone further under O'Leary if we'd have kept Jimmy.

Ironically Leeds wouldn’t give JFH what he asked for but then went on the most idiotic spending spree in English football history.

When I was young my shooting power wasn't the best...I remember watching a video of JFH speaking about how he generates power by better technique and let me tell you my power increased by 60% when I applied it. Thanks Hasselbaink ✌️

I remember Jimmy playing for Boavista here in Portugal! Magnificent player. Benfica had the chance to get him, but the Manager (Artur Jorge) preferred getting other players. As history proved, he was the worst manager in Benfica, ever (bought 60 players in one and a half season, 90% of them garbage). I would have loved to see him playing for SLB, my team. Love to see him doing great.

A Gooner here but always appreciated Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, I think he is doing himself a disservice on his technical ability. He felt like the a 'go between' era of strikers, we were used to one dimensional strikers in the Prem at the time and then you had Jimmy that was powerful, quick and deadly in front of goal. I don't know if I dreamt this but I am sure he was the first player to take what felt like a two step free kick and smashed it top corner from easily 30 yards.

I was gutted when Jimmy left Leeds. Always remember watching him, Kewell, and the likes of Clyde Wijnhard, David Hopkin, Bruno Ribeiro, Gunnar Halle, David Batty, Lee Bowyer, Alfie Haaland, Lucas Radebe, Robert Molenaar, etc. in the late 1990s. Great times.
JFH was really, really good player, and seems like a normal person... Hope everything good comes his way.
He was one of the best strikers in the league in the early 00s. It was that inconsistent Chelsea team of 2000-01, 2001.02. They had a really good team but Terry and Lampard the base were not yet mature. Hasslebaink scored the goals but the team didn’t perform to the standard they were capable off. And when Ab took over Chelsea Hasslebaink was on the decline.

Jimmy was brilliant at Leeds and for £2 million from Boavista George Graham sign-in. I once remember going to a European night and was sat on my own no were near any of my mates at the very lower East stand, normally we would be all together much higher up the East stand or in North Stand kop..All I heard from Mum's and Dad's and 8 years old kids is Jimmy Jimmy Bottlebank, I can't remember who got the tickets but I said Im not putting with that again .

What a player Jimmy was. He was one of my favourites ever since his Leeds days and I didn't even support any of the clubs he played for. He'd be worth £150m now.

The way Hasselbaink was treated at Leeds was disgraceful. He's the only Leeds player to win a Premier League golden boot. When you look at the ridiculous wages Peter Ridsdale was handing out to players far worse than Hasselbaink what he was asking for was probably quite reasonable

Zola may not be the best in EPL history, but he should be regarded as top 5. I don't want to hear about who won what, that's more a measurement of how good a team is, but purely as an individual footballer and the things he could do with a football, little guy was a genius.
Top 5 is mental, and that's not about team success because a daft metric. He spent a lot of time on the bench at Chelsea, and there was a lot of very inconsistent form in between an excellent first and last season. He also came to Chelsea after he was past his best years, which were at Parma, and whilst he was great technically you've got to put that in context of the Premier League being a bit rubbish and full of limited, athletic duffers for most teams in the 90s and early 00s.
He's a better, saner version of Di Canio, who was similarly hailed as a wonderful player in the PL at the same time, despite never winning an international cap and being a decent squad player for the big Serie A teams of the time.
@@kb5509 On reflection, you might be right - top 5 could be pushing it. I would still have him top 10 though. I understand he was "past his best", but that just shows how good he was in his prime. A guy who comes in at the age of 30 and plays a significant role in his club winning two FA cups, a League Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, and a Charity Shield is obviously not past it. As I said previously though, I don't put too much weight behind teams winning trophies as that's more a measure of the team/squad than the individual, but when that same player also wins Footballer of The Year, the clubs Player Of The Year, is entered into the English Football Hall of Fame, voted the second most skillful foreign player in English top flight history in 2007, voted by Chelsea fans as their greatest ever player, and had his number retired for 20 years until he, himself, gave permission for it to be used again, then clearly his name deserves to be mentioned when discussing players at the very top level in EPL history. I also don't think it's fair to diminish his, or anyone else's, achievements because they were playing in the late 90s, early 00s. A considerable part of the EPL career's of Henry, Shearer, Cantona, Bergkamp, van Nistelrooy, Scholes, Beckham, Giggs, Keane etc etc, were played at the same time but to claim that it should somehow diminish their achievements would be silly.
@@patrickfaulds5683 I think top 10 is still pushing it, bit to be each their own. I think Zola, and similar players, fall under more niche categories more highly, like favourite, most exciting, best technically etc.
He's a great, there's no argument against it, I just don't think he's so high. That POTY award does come with the caveat that he was consistently great that season, but never in any other. That Chelsea vote was also in 2007, which was only 4 years into their current, big club era and a lot of those now great Mourinho team legends hadn't done a lot of their careers yet, whilst he was mainly up against players from the pre-Roman Chelsea like Osgood, Kerry Dixon, Dennis Wise etc.
With those other greats you mentioned, whilst they did overlap they also had a much longer period of success generally, mostly performed at the very top level (Champions League) and we're mostly consistent in playing great, where Zola falls down a lot. The best strike partnership for the whole duration of his time there didn't include him, it was Gudjohnson and Jimmy up front, with Zola coming off the bench.

The Dutch have been blessed with some serious talent over the years but some how never made it all work together, 2004, 2008, 2010 & 2014 squads shouldve won something
I have very mixed opinions about Jimmy. I'm a Chelsea fan and the things he could do with a football were so fluid that it would be baffling at times. A wonder to watch without doubt.
BUT.
I blame him for bringing the game into disrepute for his diving. 'There was contact" I'll never forget that phrase. It became so comical that me and a few mates at the Bridge said he had location related inner ear problem. So strong on the ball, but his balance would fail him at the most opportune times and the strongest man in the Premiership would magically become a top heavy pivot in milliseconds. Love the guy, but because his actions at the turn of the century Neymar can roll from Paris to Rio and apparently that's fine.
What he did became acceptable and a contact sport became theatre. It still hurts my head and I'd love to have a civil discussion with Jimmy to explore his motivations and morals when it comes to winning. Where is the line?
Do you honestly think JFH introduced the world to diving? Players have been training for it as part of the game in Spain and Italy for decades. I doubt Neymar even knew who Jimmy was when he was growing up in Brazil.
So do you have the same mixed opinions with Didier Drogba (our best ever striker) for his diving and that sort of stuff too?
@@Weakeyedominant I think you missed the point a little bit. It's not about Neymar, he was just a name I pulled out of the hat. In Italy it was an art form but you didn't see Italians Gianfanco Zola or Roberto Di Matteo or Spaniard Albert Ferrer diving in royal blue in that time frame. The Prem is the most watched league in the world, and if it is accepted there, the kids who grew up watching it and seeing their role models doing it week in, week out? It becomes insttutionalized on the world stage.
This is why I would genuiinely like to discuss it with JFH. Great guy , but one who would do anything to win.
@@HamsaT12 Yes. He also wasn't our best striker ever. I'd place Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Tambling, Peter Osgood and Kerry Dixon above him on the striker list. Yes, he could be brilliant, but he was also mercurial. He mostly never showed up midweek in the cold evening games up north in the bread and butter games that win leagues, but Robben did. Big game player if I saw one, but you have to graft out every game before the final or the vital games against the top six.
I stood up and booed him at the Bridge, as did many others in his first season. There was a visible change in his antics for the majority of his career thereafter. Same went for Pedro, Deco and many others. Yes, my standards are high, but that went for many other fans back when the gamed was evolving in the 2000's and 2010's. It's embedded in the Premiership now and that culture will never change unless FIFA raises its standards. Play hard, play fair.
To be clear, I'm for protecting the skill element of the game and don't want to see hacking be a part of the game like it was up until the mid 90's. We all know when someone is pulling a fast one, but we accept it.

He was a two time golden boot winner with two different clubs, I always thought if wenger was a bit more ahead of the curve and played 3 strikers he would have been a great arsenal signing imagine Henry Bergkamp and hassielbank

He was nowhere near mobile enough to play in that Arsenal side. He was bombed out of Chelsea when better players came in to their side. He wasn’t as good as Wiltord and he was a sub at Arsenal.

Hasselbaink didn’t get close to 30 goals in a season at any point in his career. Most he scored for Chelsea was 23 which includes pens. Decent player but for teams like Chelsea - at the time, middle of the road, two bob outfits with big names at the end of their career, most of whom didn’t even know who Chelsea were before they joined them. He was never Arsenal quality.
