A CEO of a space program actually played kerbal space program. Shows how good the game is.
True
I think it’s time I buy it
i like that 9 year old kid. I did that with petrol and still have 10 fingers...
That made me so happy when I heard that.
I'm re-downloading it for the 34,642 time lol.
How cool would it be to meet the CEO of ULA and for him to say he loves your work and is a subscriber
I'm going to be straight up with you. Tory is awesome. Cameras on or off, he's the real deal. He's incredibly active on twitter and reddit as well. Completely accessible.
When Destin Replies to your comment
It almost looks like he was geeking out a little to be featured on the channel.
How cool would it be to meet SmarterEveryDay and for him to be so excited to see your work and make a video with you about it?
It'd be so cool I'd compliment his hat.
Tory Bruno is old enough to have seen the moon landing, is the CEO of a freaking rocket company, but plays Kerbal Space Program and uses words like 'stoked'
absolutely killer
And subscribed to SmarterEveryDay
And “stoked” was part of the everyday language with people at least ten years older than him when they all saw the Moon shot, landing, walk, escape, docking, and return. Most Everyone was stoked! He was so stoked he messed around with moldy dynamite, then became an engineer, and is now a stoked CEO of a huge freakin-huge-rockets rocket company. Staying young and still playing very seriously with rockets. Awesome.
Don't forget the badass cowboy hat!
Fazers his reddit and twitter posts are gold too
I know he has to have a place in Colorado for his weekends and vacation. 😂
Did this man just make a kerbal space program reference?? Now this is epic
Well, he DOES look like Scott Manley's dad...
Please stop saying "epic" - if you continue this nonsensical over-use of words and phrases, they tend to get diluted and lose any meaning.
And he knows how to subscribe on CZcams!
He's a actual rocket scientist. What do you expect?
*M O A R B O O S T E R S*
2:13 I love how he just mentions Kerbal Space Program in passing.
You dont ?
I love how Kerbal Space Program changed my understanding of orbital mechanics.
I love how people like him refer to in a serious sort of matter too, not like they see it as some childish video game.
Mark Wiebe, as shown on XKCD: xkcd.com/1356/
And at 8.17: MORE STRUTS! czcams.com/video/OdPoVi_h0r0/video.html
Everyone’s marvelling at the fact that the US has made an enormous solar probe and I’m just sat here in awe that hard hats shaped like cowboy hats are a thing.
Honestly it's cool but it would probably not be a good design for actually protecting your head in the event of something falling on the hat... hard hats usually are rounded to deflect blows away, but the cowboy hat's concave shape would invite objects in to the center, potentially causing more damage than if you went hatless.
@@jacobwharton5048 the point of a hard hat is to cushion the blow not deflect it. So no, it wouldn't cause more damage than of you were hatless, that's just stupid.
@@jacobwharton5048 if the rim were solid, yeah. It looks like its made of cloth though, and would probably just bend out of the way.
Yeehaw safely
You must not be from Texas my friend. LOL
A CEO of a space program actually played kerbal space program. Tells you something about the game.
And this is the coolest CEO out there.
Quahntasy - Animating Universe An old student of my teacher came in a couple weeks ago(she's an engineer at NASA now)and she told us that kerbal space program(with so mods to increase realism)has been used as a teaching tool for orbital mechanics

Its not nearly as unique for Elon since hes far younger. How often does one encounter someone 50+ years old that has played Kerbal space program?
@@UseLogicPlease123 you say it like elon is a baby lol, he is 48...2 more years and he will be in the 50+ category too

Well, u know him when he starts fangirling(if that's a thing) the rocket...

Super laid back and not trying to prove anything. Focused on the mission.
seemed like a really cool guy, VERY cool journey, im envious along with most of your subs i bet :-)
In other words, not elon...
Shots fired....
He seemed like a really nice, "average" guy outside of his vast knowledge regarding space vehicles.
Tory Bruno is pretty active on Reddit and Twitter. He actually is active in R/Spacexmasterrace lol
He also whips n******* in his spare time and calls the police on them every other day.
I love that CEO casually refers to KSP
I've never liked a man in a cowboy hat so much.
Who, Destin or the CEO? :)
Did he... just reference Kerbal Space Program?
yes, yes he did. In modern times, KSP is the most fun way to get into rocket science. Even Elon Musk played it and thought it was pretty good
@@grenzviel4480 how is Elon Musk playing a game a good recommendation? He's not a physicist or anything. Owning a rocket ship company is not the same as running one. Musk hires guys like this to run SpaceX.
@@iwasadeum I didn't say anything about a "good" recommendation. I'm just saying a lot of people who work in rocket/space industry most likely also have played KSP.
.
PS: I'm sure that owning a rocket ship company and running one are different. But knowing a lot about both rocket science and knowing how to the business goes a long way. Just compare the progress of Blue Origin (with a leader who knows a lot about making money, and has a LOT more money but arguably knows much less about rocket science), vs SpaceX. Stop acting like Musk is not doing anything but pay money to do whatever he wants others to do. He may not be a physicist, but if Musk was replaced by some other billionaire, there is a high probability their technology wouldn't have come as far as it is today. SpaceX still, to this date, is the only rocket company that can send things on orbit and land the booster back on the ground safely for reuse, reliably.
00:47, "I'm gonna have to be very professional..."
10:00, "And I went and eavesdropped in there..." 😂

You're surprisingly bad at making time marks.

I guess thats the best marketing/pr they could ever get.
*Explodes and 5 kerbins die*
Exactly. I would be so happy if I was them.
I'm sure I've seen some pictures of it being played in a control room at nasa
11:18 _Scott Manley did the math_
Scott
Back in school, if my math had been off by that margin, I wouldn’t have passed.
Err, back in school, you weren't messing around with something like solid rocket boosters, which have no positive control over their burn times. An SRB can't be shut off, so if you miscalculate even the tiniest bit on amount of fuel, or your fuel quality is just a bit off and so it burns a bit slower or faster than you were expecting, then your ending trajectory can be quite a bit different than what you were hoping for.
r/theydidthemath
Would be great to see them together on that pad. In fact, on any pad...
yes they can be effectively shut off, see Scott´s video ;)

Elon is just marketing.
DanTheMan yeah no
+DanTheMan Yeah, vertical propulsive landing of orbital rockets and their subsequent reuse is quite a marketing feat.
Gioele Ciaparrone precisely marketing. The public now believes that reusable rockets outclass disposable ones. There is a tradeoff which is reduced performance and reliability.

Of course, for this _specific_ rocket, I'm *super* stoked to hear about how it's going!

You definitely set an awesome example.

Michael Clayton Lol same.
The Delta IV heavy is completely worth throwing your napkin.

It's trajectory blew my mind! The fact that we can do the math to simulate a rocket launched from Earth on a certain time at a certain speed in a certain direction for it to interact with Venus's gravity and bring it closer and closer to the sun is so incredible.

Is it just me, or is this ksp referencing CEO looking like a slightly older Scott Manley?
Possibly the best video on CZcams, really loved it - no PR, no scripting, just an amazing open book. Really love that he's so much 'like us' too in being a huge nerd of all things rocket flight and doesn't mention $$ or other management mumbo jumbo once.
My mind boggles seeing it up so close and how massive its diameter is. Good job
I admire how respectful both of you are. I hope everyone could understand how important it is and make the earth a better place to live in

6:20 Talk about being dedicated from what you were inspired from as a kid. This all so wonderful.
What a special treat. Thank you for bringing it to us!
I am a lowly auto technician. I understand very little about these things. I still get so excited because I know the more we explore, the more we realize we didn't know. Keep pushing the envelope for those of us who can't. You are appreciated.
Auto technicians were the rocket scientists of the day 100 years ago. Take pride in your work! 100 years from now, someone like you will say "I'm just a lowly 2018-era rocket scientist".
@@Ranstone Just being humble. Lol
So you understand the Wizardry of OBD II?
@@smartereveryday 😎 Yes, but only OBD II.
So, if I understand this right, in order for the Parker probe to get closer to the Sun we need to put enough force on it in the opposite direction than earth is orbiting in order for the Sun's gravity to act on it and pull it in?
Correct. Orbiting something is when the object goes so fast that it can't fall into what it's orbiting around, because it travels so fast sideways. To fall into the sun, you need to cancel out all that velocity the Earth has.
So technically it wont be the fastest man made object, but rather the slowest. Relatively speaking.
No. The Parker probe is already flying around the sun, subject to it's gravity, at thousands of kilometres an hour, the same as earth. If it wasn't for the sun's gravity we'd be flying off to somewhere else in the milky way. What you need to do is to slow it down to drop it's altitude. But the funny thing is that even though you are slowing it down, because it falls so close to the sun it speeds up a ridiculous amount due to the gravity of the sun. Clear as mud?
Marc Burger it’ll be the slowest at the beginning, but when it gets to it’s perihelion it’s going to be the fastest by far
At points in the orbit when the satellite is reaching its closest point in orbit to the sun, it will be travelling at a really colossal speeds. As it's going to be needing that speed and momentum to carry it back out.
Just a couple tidbits, all orbits are slices of a cone, and if you want to get a visual understanding of orbits Kerbal Space Program as mentioned in the video gives really good visual depictions of orbital mechanics. (Though KSP is scaled at half regular solar system scale.)
A lot of the science went over my head in this video, but the emotion and the human connection was amazing. To be greeted by the CEO and walked through the process like that was so special, and hearing him say he was a subscriber, wow. But what really got me was when you walked out of the elevator and the gravity of what you were about to experience hit me and I was blown away. Great video!
What an unbelievably inspiring video, and incredibly touching narrative. It’s so moving to see and hear from someone so dedicated to their passion, especially when lifted by the work of countless brilliant individuals working in tandem to create something that appears impossible to achieve. And such a humble man to boot! One of my favorite videos you’ve made yet Destin. Congratulations and thank you!
Imma pause this for a second just to say: "That friggin hard hat is unreal." .... I'll continue watching now
It is also completely useless at it's intended function, which is to protect the head from falling objects. Hard hats are rounded so any heavy object striking your head will glance off, pushing your head to the side. They aren't all that effective against direct hits to the very center, which is why there is usually a mohawk of thicker plastic. A good sized bolt dropped from one or two stories has more than enough energy to punch a hole straight through with a direct hit.
That hard hat is just one huge flat horizontal surface. Any impact is going to be transferred straight down into his neck and spine, and the shape of the divet in the top of the hat will actually redirect an otherwise-glancing blow into a direct hit to the top (weakest) part of the hard hat.
He'd be better off just wearing a normal cowboy hat.
Obviously the actual hard hat under the outer hat will have a proper dome shape. No one would actually make the hard shell in the shape of the outer hat. These guys have access to serious engineers; they don't get college interns to design their stealth hardhats...
Been waiting soo long for this video.

This was amazing! Can't wait to hear about the parker solar probes findings :)
8:00 I am having a hard time to believe that those "flimsy" side struts are the ones that pass on the thrust into the center core. I rather think they just arrest any rolling motion or momentum. The big bolted structures where the side-boosters and center-stage are closes are probably the ones that transfer the upward thrust. Maybe that was what the CEO was actually talking about on second thought.
Have you ever played kerbal space program? Those struts have a rigidity of infinity!
@@roflex2 the planet will break before the struts will.
I would add that the large mounting point you can see on the mid-point (depth per viewpoint) between the booster core and the central core is the primary structure for vertical (lift) loads for the boosters into the second stage.
The side struts then are for arresting any twisting motion caused by TVC roll motions which would be controlled mainly by the booster cores.
This, though initially counter intuitive for me, makes sense to be at the top of the booster/central core assembly as the central core lifts itself and the booster cores only assist in lifting the payload (until expended).
The counter point would be maybe the cores are joined for vertical force transfer at the base, and therefore the vertical loads are transferred from the booster core thrust assembly into the central core, and this then lifts the payload. Weirdly, this introduces weight penalties, but does so through a design choice of the cores being CCAs - Common Core Assemblies; i.e. the central and booster cores are the same.
In this case the booster cores are not lifting a payload, so there require less support vertically because there's nothing but a nose-cone on top of them. The central core does however require much greater support vertically because it's taking the force from the booster cores as well as it's own thrust through to the second stage adapter.
The difference in strength required therefore between the central core and the booster cores could be something like an order of magnitude different; yet they are the same design.... hence weight penalty....
It's strange when something so simple as - 'lets bolt them together at the top', makes such obvious sense in hindsight; I've been kerballing all wrong... I wonder how falcon heavy does it?
Gosh I love rockets; Gosh I love engineering.
Okay, this guy might actually be cooler than Elon Musk, with his cowboy hard hat and kerbal space program analogies

That rocket is beautiful, can't I.ahine what it would be like to be so close to it and get to see the scale of it right.
Just the idea that the payload is so tiny compared to the actual rocket itself.
I really enjoyed the comments at the corner that explain terms I didn't understand :) Hope you use it more often
Thank you so much, Mr. Bruno, for walking us through your rocket!
After hearing a few negative comments about the entities involved with ULA and it's business dealings a few days ago this was the perfect thing to watch in order to put me on a 180 degree perspective and realize the potential of such a conglomerate instead if the negative spin I've heard.
BTW, is ULA really near Huntsville? What else is there? I was born in Huntsville hospital but was whisked away within a year, grew up in Chattanooga, then moved to Los Angeles in my late teens. I've been to Huntsville a bunch but never explored past seeing rockets beside the freeway while visiting family. It sounds like I need to rediscover my roots. I know my Grandfather was a technical writer for NASA. I guess I need to explore some more. Thanks.
